Chazzel is kind of a hack. Both of these movies make a big deal about success being chosen over a relationship which he personally did and it turned out alright I guess but he handles it like it's an essential stepping stone. Whiplash is litterally a sports movie but woth music and Seb from LaLa land has a pretty bull shit opinion regarding jazz, because if it isn't classic bop it's a bastardizarion, and while it was cool visually the film's narrative seemed kind of half assed.
Frank is a top teir music movie though.

they have some similarities but it's definitely not the same story. la la land is a lot better than whiplash. the main character from la la land also had some strange opinions about jazz but it was kind of justified while in whiplash the characters were purely retarded. i wouldn't call characters from la la land likeable but the love story was pretty original.

The protagonist doesn't become skilled by improvisation, he becomes skilled by intense practice. I don't know where you're getting this practice vs. improvisation dynamic from. They even use blood, sweat, and tears imagery during his final solo.
