What dirt box is a good alternative to tube distortion?

Can i use a tubescreamer in addition to boost the signal for solos, too?
>>
so, playing FWB seems enduring. it's just an fret attack all the way through.
>>
>>72639516
you can use whatever you want
good alternatives to their corresponding tube amps are the AMT Legend pedals.
Those fucking rule, I play all my Gigs through a P2.
If you use amp distortion, you need a clean boost in your fx loop for a level boost. If you use a Pedal like the AMT for your dirt you can put the clean boost after that, before the amp.

Hey guys, im a classical guitar player who wants to play electric properly.
I already know theory and i have a good left hand technique but my right hand is shit.

Any advice on exercices and everything? I want to be able to play some wanky guitar stuff
>>
>>72639655
try going full riff-worship:
go looking for percussive but repetitive riffs and learn them inside out and repeat them a million times to a drum loop. Start slow. Should do wonders for your picking. Play along to AC/DC albums and try nailing every pause.

Or just learn Master of Puppets and start killing posers by downstroking through the entire thing.
Your best bet really is heavy rock stuff for a disciplined rhythm hand.

I transitioned from classical to fusion, and while I studied classical with teacher, I learned everything about the electric guitar from the internet. Beware of shitty advice, because there is a lot of it out there, I held the pick wrong for about a year, because I listened to some dumbass. Watch people like Guthrie Govan for tips on technique and people like Dan and Mike from that pedal show for tips on gear, which is almost equally important to understand how to make the sound you want.

Arpeggiated power chords, lots of pedal point thrashy riffs. Use the Chuck Shape (TM) that is, root, fifth and minor sixth.

What I cannot wrap my head around is how he could make that stuff sound so unique while using the same tools all the time. Once I've started learning their songs finally, I've noticed that they're not as difficult or technical as it seemed. Fast, sure, but mostly it was power chords, power chord arpeggios, the 1 - 5 - 6 shape and some diminished or minor runs. Bam. The genius was in using a lot of simple things for amazing songwriting.

if i put it further up on my index finger, i have to curl the finger to the point of discomfort (so that my nail doesn't scratch the string) and i lose out on speed

>>
>>72644863
Yeah, that's a point. Bass strings are expensive as shit compared to guitar strings, mostly due to supply and demand. Then you add in the fact that they also take longer to sound like crap compared to guitar, a guitarrist might change his strings once a month if he's playing often but a bassist has about another month of leeway to change his strings before it becomes noticeable, and you're looking at plenty of bassists who straight up don't bother changing their strings for like six months straight.

Hell, I myself change my strings every 3 months, and I play quite a bit.
>>
Friendly reminder that Standby switches are utter bullshit and only good for protecting fender's crappy capacitors

http://www.valvewizard.co.uk/standby.html
>>
>>72645451
There was a debate on DIYAudio forums a while back about this. High-end hifi amps costing thousands of dollars don't have standby switches, guitar amps certainly don't need them. Just throw the power switch, avoid sending a sudden high voltage through hot tubes.
>>
I've been learning how to actually play lead recently and I noticed that often when I play/switch notes it'll make the other strings vibrate just enough to make background noise
Especially when I jump to another string
It's normally not bad on its own but when I turn on distortion it gets really noticeable

How can I fix this? Is it just that my technique is shit?

Hey guys, I've been playing the electric guitar for some time and want to get my first acoustic guitar now.
I found a cheap offer for a Tanglewood guitar, however there's one thing that's suspicious to me.
The "mechanics"/let me call them "silver things" (sorry not a native speaker) don't have the T for Tanglewood on the backside.
I've seen these Ts on some Tanglewood guitars (on each of the 6 silver things), I'm not sure whether or not every Tanglewood has these. What do you guys think?

Well, he did practice his ass off and wrote loads of songs. He used his pre-SBG riffs as far in as Spiritual Healing. I do not even like to say that he was talented - that would be diminishing of his success and skill. He just basically spent almost a decade locked up in his room, playing to his favourite records and imitating them until all that hard work exploded into amazing albums.

And yeah, the whole Death thing had a message of love for life, or rather, hate for those who do not appreciate life - obviously a more metal way to write positive lyrics. It never went all "Anus of Satanus" worship and the rhythm section that worked for him we're all god damn geniuses in their own right, so everything just clicked. If only being an honest musician and a quality person actually paid any money, he would probably still be around, writing whatever crazed up jazz prog he was starting to go into with Control Denied.

if you're an amateur luthier i can see doing absolutely anything else with that guitar for practice, i.e. ripping the frets off, scalloping the neck, fuck maybe even changing the string spacing and filling/drilling new holes in the headstock, but when the fuck will you ever be given this task again? who the hell would want to make their strat neck into a MM neck?

not that guy, but I got into guitar because i wanted something to apply my electronics obsession to.

I own a couple high end Schecters, Deans and Jacksons. I love them but I like working on stuff myself, I don't find it fun to just buy a guitar and only play it like it came from the factory for the rest of my life.

Think of it like an old car that your dad gave you for your 18th birthday. It's shit. It's beat up. You decide to restore it, and when you look at the finished product you feel proud of yourself.

I wouldn't really ask serious questions right now. I don't know if it's richfags, shitposters, autists or all three but this thread is going down the drain faster than it usually does.

Do you play classical? Why do you need long fingernails? Generally I just use a pick and keep my nails short but that doesn't represent any issue for fingerpicking for me.

Adrian Legg recommends fingerpicking wiht no fingernails, just the flesh of your fingers. Works for him, works for me too. YMMV.

This song was my introduction to finger picking. It's easier than it looks, mostly just arpeggios and such. I need something else that's as fun to play.
>>
>>72655301
how are you recording it? the volume on your guitar might be set too high for whatever the input is, causing some sort of soft clipping that isn't showing up on your DAW.
>>
When you pick should you hand be floating? I see some people who tremolo pick put their pinky ring and middle finger on their pickguard but idk if it's right techniques.
>>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_RD4ge4fhc

>>72655972
Depends what you're picking. If I recall right Thom Yorke picks Street Spirit and Paranoid Android floating since they're kinda like strumming chords.
>>
>>72655972
I don't anchor at all.

it's really a personal taste thing. just make sure you're not putting undo pressure on your pinky if you're not floating.

>>72649957
To be fair, you're not bound to see many people that play cellos or upright basses, and most that do don't actually own the instrument and it's part of an orchestra or something, where there are costs for other things as well (I don't think I've ever seen my violinist friend sadder than the day her bow burst, for example).

Ultimately, if you go by the standard power trio configuration, the bassist probably is the one which has the overall greatest expenses.

Hey, just bought this on a whim from a friend. I know it's kinda cheapo, but I've been having a lot of fun with it these past couple days. I can hit the different strings without looking at em so far and I feel like this is really something I could get into. My question is for anyone who's played for a while; how many hours do you think it takes to make a random fuck off the street doing the exercises here and playing with some dedication for a couple hours after work every day to be able to go to a jam session and have fun? I'm not trying to become [famous guitarist], just think it'd be a good (sober) hobby and something positive to spend money on. bonus: any advice for finding a group of guys to play with when the time comes?

Why is guitar the only instrument where trying to achieve technical mastery of the instrument is looked down upon? Does anyone tell violinists and pianists that they're playing "too fast" and "without emotion"?
>>
>>72657974
yes, when they're playing too fast
>>
>>72657974
Violinists and pianists tend to master all kinds of expressive techniques before they start playing "virtuoso"-type music, their equivalent of shredding. Because of the lack of formal education you have tons of people playing really really fast without having a fucking clue on guitar. That has fostered a negative stereotype in that community.
Violinists who are "shredding" are still well rounded musicians in most if not damn near all cases, whereas a sizeable amount of guitarists who shred are not.

screws, how do they work?
>>
What do I do if I have a 200 watt Sunn guitar tube head, should I just get an attenuator?
>>
>>72658723
the Behringer Ultrabass is 2000 watts and probably a third the cost of your toob brick.

You should totally buy more stuff to try to make do basic things like play loud or soft
>>
Guyz i wanna try some compact wireless sys(Relay g10, Nady MGT-16, Samson Airline.. Etc)What would be the best?
>>
>>72658723
You'll need an attenuator rated at 200 Watts, good luck finding one of those.
>>

>cheaper equipment is better
>Behringer is worth buying

found one

The hundred watters are only a dollar if you're frugal.

Mesa alll the way
Nothing else compares

I just saw Samuel on /bant/ and he says he's never coming back.

I've got the Mesa Formula preamp and I hate the way the graphic EQ works. You get it set for a good clean sound., it fucks up your lead sound and vice versa, And the actual tone knobs are almost useless, they barely affect the sound in the slightest.

Look at tokai and greco. Lots of older jap shit with vintage radius and frets

he probably wants a good guitar dude
>>
>>72656522
the 1980s MIJ Fenders have the 7.25" radius and little skinny frets, if that's really what you want
>>
>>72657019
That could be anything from your nut to your neck to your frets. Not your pickups though, they don't "die". Get it set up

>>
>>72658985
I'm sorry you're a moron who can't read a manual. Don't blame the amp for your incompetence
>>
>>72659004
Pretty much every guitar is "good" with a set up. Change the pickups until it sounds like how you want. Unless you believe in tonewood LOL
>>
How to write good solos for my band's songs?

I can't come up with something worthful for that specific song.
I just play some notes from the vocal line and noodle the rest.
