Reteaching myself music theory (read: gave up after 10 minutes). Besides being able to read a couple key signatures of written music, I'm a bit clueless.

Anyway if I was forming let's say a minor triad, is there a quicker way than
>Take root note
>Count up four steps
>Count up seven steps
>Oh wait, can't do that in an open position, let's move up a bunch of frets and start over
>Count up four from root again
>Count up seven again (or 3 from the 3rd?)

>>
>>72575553
Don't rely on that all the time. You never learn how it really works that way then.
Make sure to do a pitch inventory on chords you play if you absolutely must.
>>
Does anyone make a simple,1x12 solid state combo, with a good clean sound, that's not a 900 dollar Quilter Mach II?

I need a practice/jam amp. AC30 is too loud and too heavy.
>>
>>72575577
Any suggestions for learning, then? Doing this from scratch. As I said I'm pretty much clueless

This, Premier Guitar is godlike
>>
>>72575535
>>72575572
Sounds good. I already have the guitar I want. I just need to learn about amps and pedals to get the sound I want.
>>
>>72575577
>>72575553
it really depends on what your goals are. since you said "quicker", i'm assuming you just want to play/write, not have a super comprehensive grasp of the entire fretboard. in that case then yeah learn 3 or 4 shapes. that's one of the awesome benefits to the guitar (and probably one of the main reasons for its popularity). moveable shapes are something totally unique to the guitar

but if you ever do want a more comprehensive knowledge of the fretboard then painstakingly learning all of the notes and how every chord is formed could be really helpful.

personally for me i only really found it useful in a jazz context, which was just so overwhelmingly hard that i've kinda stopped playing in groups. but you kind of need that ability to comp and come up with good voice leading on the spot.

and then fucking soloing that's another story

i'm on a rant because i'm on adderall but i also wanted to say that i'm not sure you really reach an underlying "way it really works" like the other guy said you do. i think it's more just that you'll know where every voicing is, but that doesn't mean you understand how the chords relate any better. study more music and less voicings. voicings are a means to an end
>>
>>72575408
Nigga what?
Learn your keys.
Let's take the G major scale, which is:
G A B C D E F# G
A major chord is the first note of the scale, plus the third and the fifth. So, G B D.
Just play those notes.
Making a minor chord? Just flatten the third note into Bb and keep the first and fifth.

He had created the account on the day he bought the guitar, consequently had no feedback, he had a foreign name and communicated in English at first, and he asked me to provide a direct PayPal link so he wouldn't have to go through eBay to pay because something on his end went wrong.

I don't see what could go wrong now.
>he claims the guitar didn't arrive

I guess I should open up the package again before shipping it and take timestamped pics of the guitar to prove it had no faults in case he claims it arrived broken.

out of curiosity why do you like telecasters? they look so ugly to me that I could never justify buying one.
>>
>>72579225
I was in the same boat. Went into a guitar store with the full intention of buying a Strat, tried various Strats (MIM and MIA). None really appealed to me except (ironically) the cheapest one, a daphne blue MIM. Then I thought, while I'm here, why don't I try some other stuff? Mustang with P90s, some cheaper Gretsches and finally, for shits and giggles, a Tele. Basically all I knew going into this was, I want a guitar with single coil pickups and the fattest neck I can find. Clerk gave me a Baja Tele, I tried it and fell in love with the sound, the feel and the versatility.
Yes they look like cutting boards but damn, did that one feel and sound good. And I'm getting accustomed to the look, starting to dig them slowly.
>>
>>72579245
I suppose I definitely can't argue there, if something sounds and feels good, then it's a win. but damn do they look unappealing.

>>

yes do it

>he revokes his payment
but you said the payment done through Paypal instead of ebay prevents refunding. so thats not possible.
>>
>>72580982
theres no need to memorize the notes (G A B etc) of each single scale
just memorize the scale's intervals and how intervals arrange from each other on the neck
then you will be able to find the third and fifth quickly, by looking at it....
and take 10 minutes to find the intervals without a fretboard to look at...

I just bought a fender jaguar bass for $100. It's probably the best bass I have ever played. Why are the cheaper basses better than the expensive ones?
>>
>>72582633
cause people who buy cheap basses usually spend more time playing them and would know the difference from a worse instrument

I guess it's all subjective, but there is something about the high end I get from it and the "feel" of it. I am not a huge tech junkie, but just from about about every other bass I have played I find myself more comfortable with this one, it just feels like I can play fast things easier with it.

That said, from what I've seen of the CR120H and the Tiny Terror, they both sound great. Personally, however, I'd probably go with the Tiny Terror, simply because I already have a 100W solid state Marshall head. If I didn't have that, I would have gone with the CR120H.

wtf are ohms and how do they relate to what speakers I can use?
>>
>>72586004
It's a measurement of electrical resistance
>>
>>72586004
>>72586075
this
what you have to worry regarding speakers is
if you put a speaker of higher resistance on a amp's output thats meant for a speaker of lower resistance, the speaker wont recieve all the electricity that the amp is sending, energy will stay at the amp and it will blow up
if its the other way round you just get less volume
>>

>I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about
>>
>>72586075
>>72586102
what do I need to know to be able to tell whether or not it is safe to use an amp with a speaker?
>>
stupid question

is the blues scale based on the key you're playing in rather the chords?

so i'm playing a song in G, the G blues scale would be okay to use? just trying to gain a foothold on it.
>>
maybe a stupid question..
but how do they fit 24 frets onto a neck?
which way do they extend the neck?
towards the bridge or out to the headstock?
>>
>>72586228
youd be playing the chords that are in the key
both the scale and the cords are in the key

if theres a chord that isnt in the key then you can use the arpeggio of that chord to improvise
>>
>>72586221
The Ohms have to match. Most amps have switches between 8 and 16 ohms.
Use these formulas to calculate the wattage of a cab if I't s just one speaker then that's the ohms but if its two or more then use these

>for cabs in parallel wiring
1/amp ohms = 1/speaker 1 + 1/speaker 2 etc solve forr amp ohms
>for cabs in series wiring
amp ohms = speaker 1 + speaker 2

>>
>>72586221
There are two answers to this depending on whether you're using a tube amp or a solid state amp. I'll give both answers but tell me what you're using first and I'll answer that first, it's a lot of typing.

Also note that unlike the previous poster, I do understand tube amps, electronics and physics.
>>
>>72585406
Good job Sam
>>
>>72586228
scales are based on keys

if you're playing a song in G, using the G blues scale would mean using the parallel pentatonic minor (ie a minor scale that starts on G, but uses different notes than the g major scale). if you used E minor pentatonic, then you would be playing the relative pentatonic minor (ie a minor scale that has the same notes as the G major scale).

you can use either, but parallel minor will give a more bluesy sound.

>>72586234
unless the luthier intended to change the scale of the instrument, the neck would be extended toward the bridge to add extra frets
>>
>>72586304
>I still don't know what I'm talking about
>>
>>72586359
I do use both but I suppose if you could focus on SS first that would be nice.

>>72586359
>Also note that unlike the previous poster, I do understand tube amps, electronics and physics.
>>
>>72586402
SS amps are much more forgiving with speaker loads. There's a rating on the back of the amp saying what the minimum speaker load is, often this is as low as 2 ohms. A solid state output stage will tolerate a wide range of speaker loads and sufferes NO DAMAGE with a high impedance load. The output power will be reduced in proportion to the impedance so SS output stages will run cooler with high impedances.

Tube amps are entirely different. NEVER run a tube amp without a speaker attached and ALWAYS match the amp's impedance selector to the impedance of the cab. Running a tube output stage with no speaker attached produces an effect similar to running a microwave oven with no food in it as the output transformer primary effectively becomes a pure inductor which opposes changes in current, generating huge flyback voltages which eventually break through the winding insulation, arc the transformer and the output tubes and wreck the amp.
>>
>>72586004
Ohms are impedance which is the reciprocal of transconductance.

both the 110v thing and the amp of unmatched speakers will blow up
yeah its not good analogy
one burn because its not made for that much energy.
the other (the amp) burns because the output energy (which is a lot of volts, you even have to use stronger speaker cables on there, not regular guitar cables) doesnt go out completely

now, if what you're saying is that low impedance does not mean that it will pass less energy then 'you' are on shit
