Tomorrow is a fine day to die.

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

i tried going to a metal shop yesterday, hoping to find a darkthorne logo shirt, but all I found was a blaze one, with ridiculous sizing. I think I'll look for one to order.
Cool kids here don't even know about joy division, east Europe is heaven.

Anyway, I really like the first Emperor EPs and the first three Darkthrone ablums, other than that I think I prefer blacked punk or blacked noise.
I still have like four black metal charts to finish.

I like the new Arto Lindsay album. I didn't knew he was into bossa nova, which looking at his discography is old news.

The new Pharmakon album is okay. I liked the simple approach, but the last track attempts at ambient seemed like a miss. The vocals saved it, but it still seems off. I would love to see her scream her lungs out live.

Fred Frith Guitar Solos (1) are still a classic. It's ridiculous what he was able to produce with no overdubbing. Also his constraint in terms of preparing and texture fetishism is what makes the album so perfect. It's really full with fresh, free ideas and no jerking around.

aw, by the way - i'm looking for nylon guitar stuff, contemporary classical and classical welcomed.
I really like the Darkness Melts Haino album, which is his only album with nylon I guess, but in terms of free improve that seems to be it. Bailey uses steel strings still.

which reminds me - do you remember the Bailey drum and bass album?

Groud Zero is amazing, you should actually wander around Yoshihide's discography, which (except for the more formal onkyo stuff) explores the borders between jazz, rock, film music, turntables and noise pretty well.

Dragon Blue - Hades Park

There has to be an online service that allows me to add albums as I wish but not rate them. These are all great but I could swear I heard something else but I can't remember.
Also how come MP3 has existed since the 90s and we still don't have a standard for tagging classical music?

Telstar Drugs
>bedroom pop
this is a guitar album, meaning everyone other than the guitarist does a sub-par job. particularly the drummer almost ruins a few spots like on piglet or the one where the gang tries for a post-rocky climax. lead guitar is also mixed twice as loud as everything else which was kind of annoying but tbf i only listened to it on headphones. sometimes the dude gives me african pop vibes, sometimes it's like if you told the dude from yowie to play mac demarco or something. yeah there’s a few cool riffs, a few for weirdly dissonant ones, all played with the same kinda boring breezy tone that does nothing for me but usually dropped just before overstaying their welcome which makes for probably the most interesting aspect of this album to me, the structureless flow that really helps to distinguish these tracks and make them feel fresh.
i can see (from a distance) why tripup likes it so much, and by contrast why he hates stuff like weezer/pop punk that’s based on more meat n potatoes power chord riffage

both Kreisky albums were closer to my thing than this, they've got a snotty vocalist that i'm not a huge fan of, they sound extremely passive-aggressive, but they're totally danceable. not really sure what the best reference points would be. maybe albini-stuff and blumfeld

Kanzler wins the shortest tournament in /daily/ history by a few hairs

I mean its always a gamble and interesting is subjective innit. I think the main struggle comes from trying to find a hidden gem. A good album that no one has listened to. I would also rather pick a provocative album that everyone shits on than a safe one that is warmly received. Though ideally I'd like to find an album some people love and some hate that spurs some conflict.

Admittedly I am a sucker for ol' suffy but this is really nice
Already liked C&L but this only improves on it, the expanded arrangements really add to this, also change the mood into more uplifting. Recc'd if you like C&L or heard it but wished it was more varied instrumentally and a bit more fun.

Old for sure, but idk where old era ends and new era begins. After episode 100 maybe? My personal favs are in the 70s/80s.

The new ones aren't THAT bad really, but I just don't like them as much. There's probably a lot of nostalgia tied into that anyways (kinda weird how something made in like 2007 is "nostalgic" to me now).

ROUND 4

> SURVIVORS
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

>EthyBoy: https://youtu.be/ViLGrfp0NG0

music + dolphins in the video made me compare this to Rustie - First Mythz, but tuned down. Not a bad tune though, might check the album out.

>Comet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2doFSB8eB50

Made me curious enough to look up the original unremixed song, which was pretty alright. I like the floor squeak sampling, and even if the autotune is irritating, the transformation from a rock song to extraterrestrial invasion was neat.

>IM FISH: https://youtu.be/N8FO8c1GF8k

Hi, I'm Richard D. James. I produce only the freshest audio works, here at my English home. It's not a little known fact that my sound is easily recognizable, and has inspired countless others to create music. From ambiance to break beats, silly tunes and piano pieces, my variety of work ensures that anyone will be able to enjoy a fresh Aphex Track.

Always fantastic. Always Organic. Aphex Twin™.
________
> DEAD
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
>jimmy jazz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iXKuPsfzt8

Eh. House tracks like this are always boring to listen to by themselves. Obviously catchy and danceable, but that's easy with such an easily laid out build and breakdown here. Honestly just falls short compared to the other 3 songs here.

>>72494990

D'Angelo and The Vanguard - Black Messiah (2014)
>neo-soul

With a fire lit under D'Angelo's ass from both the fact that he hadn't done anything in fourteen years and the political climate of the times, he made a much more interesting, enveloping, and badass album than anything else he'd ever done. There are some smooth tracks I'm not super into, like "Sugah Daddy" and "Another Life", but he's even making this smooth style I don't like much on Voodoo more engrossing. "Really Love" is everything Voodoo wanted to do done with more finesse and passion, and the newfound gruff in D'Angelo's vocals doesn't do much to hurt this newfound passion and aggression. This aggression is obviously much more prominent on the political tracks, however, and these are the highlight of the album. These tracks adopt a rockier sound, and this sound is done absolutely perfectly. The drums hit hard, the guitar work is all great, and the grooves are perfect. "1000 Deaths" could work its way into being one of my favorite songs of the decade, and the couple flamenco-tinged songs wouldn't be too far behind. Shouldn't have slept on this for so long, this is nice.

3.0-

Jethro Tull - Aqualung (1971)
>progressive rock

Prog with a neat flute, what else can I say? The Tull get into a pretty cool folky sound a couple times on this album. Anderson's oft-mocked flute is actually really fucking awesome and I wish it anchored more tracks, because the actual rock here is terribly middle of the road. The title track is good, but that's really only because of the riff and guitar tone (the guitar tone on the whole album is immaculate, really), the structures of the tracks really aren't that great and their hard rock/blues rock sound is ultimately sterile and bland. I think Thick as a Brick should be the Tull album for me.

Ulver - Perdition City (2000)
>electronic

Not as good as Kid A, the album it's so often compared to, but a much more radical re-invention, and a damn fine album on it's own right. Ulver's debut is one of my favorite black metal albums ever, so it's incredibly shocking that here they are making one of my new favorite trip hop (ish) albums too. The sound design here is incredible, a lot of the tones and textures and here shake the listener to the core (it's a headphone album, without a doubt), and there's still a certain heavy aspect here carried over from the band's metal days that adds a lot to the record. The vocals aren't great, and and I'm not huge on the jazz elements here, but it's still a very good album.

Black metal sucks

>Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan

Yeah, this blows.

There are some really great hooks on here, and the way Longstreth oversings these low-key and supple arrangements is kind of endearing, but the actual songs are just flat. Unmemorable. Boring.

Dance For You, Impregnable Question and Just From Chevron are the worst offenders, just kind of aimlessly floating along, or leaving any real impression.

However, if you have to check out one song, make it the title track, which is actually pretty great. Very reminiscent of Nashville Skyline/New Morning Dylan, which I am very big fan of.

>Desire - S/T

Mostly famous for contributing Under Your Spell to the soundtrack of Drive, Desire's eponymous debut is an excursion in making a tone. That tone itself is pretty great, I've always enjoyed that moody, nocturnal vibe, but it manages to be pretty inconsistent.

While the best tracks keep things minimal while still being evocative of that tone (I Can't Hold You), the worst break away from that mold and reveal the sloppy songwriting underneath.

Colorless Sky has a decent melody and some grabbing imagery, it's bogged down down by a flaccid tempo and some over-indulgent piano, too twinkly and upbeat for its own good.

The rest of the album is a variance between those two extremes, so all in all it's a very mixed bag.

>Steve Reich - Electric Counterpoint

It's really pretty.

>3.5

>Arab Strap - Monday at the Hug & Pint

Typical stuff for the Straps, usual stuff about working class nobodies, alcohol, hangovers and betrayal of some sort, except there's a level of craftsmanship that was never there before.

Just listen to those strings pop on The Shy Retirer, and christ, that ambience on At the Bar, a Drunkard Muses is the sound of every hungover day after. Those first four tracks, fantastic.

But, oh wait, all that skill, and cleverness just evaporates on the second half of the album. Where did all that potential go? Now it's just a bunch of overly romantic saps waxing about getting hammered. Sure, it's basically the same stuff a small before, but there's something missing!

>3.0

>Basement Jaxx - Rooty

Rooty is fun. Rooty is manic. Rooty is warped.

While Daft Punk's take on house firmly rooted it in American garage and the finest pop music you've ever heard, Rooty dragged the genre back onto the dance floor, not after giving it its own schizophrenic flavor.

On "Where's Your Head At" alone, you have the meanest, dirtiest, bass-iest synth line running under a Gary Numan sample that is moving at a breakneck pace, and mixed in within some grungy guitar tones, you've got yourself a party.

And trust me when I say it, there is no break. Every track is a look into some funhouse-mirror version of a club, filled with off-kilter pads and hyperactive samples popping in and out, sliding between channels. It's a draining listen.

I mean god, what a great record! Certainly the best house record of the 2000's, maybe even ever. So good.

Clive Tanaka y Su Orquesta - Jet Set Siempre No. 1 (2010)
>chillwave, electropop, electro-disco

Nicely chill and danceable stuff. The "For Dance" side is a lot better and more engaging than the "For Romance" side, mainly because it takes on a more disco-sound that it does really well. "All Night, All Right" and "Neu Chicago" are both great tracks, really chill and summery but also fun and danceable as hell too. The romance side is alright, but it's boring, for lack of a better word. Not a memorable hook or melody on the whole thing, but it's still better than most other chillwave I've heard. Gonna be playing this a lot during the summer, probably.

Reposting song thoughts with missing recs

trip up: Women - Can't You See

The whole melodic meme meets noisy drone thing was p neato at first. Unfortunately, it kinda wore off towards the end. Interesting tho.

yamir: Little Kid - Logic Song/We Waited

Ok, I know /daily/ loves this but it has taken me quite some time to finally listen to anything off it. Thanks for this yams cause this was some good stuff. Really brings out feelings of comfy melancholy that I like in music.

jimmy jazz: You'll Never Get to Heaven - Drowning Out

Pretty comfy. Cool vibes. A tad bit repetitive but it's not a big problem. Neato.

Kanzler: Now, Now - The Pull

Eh, not really my thing. Stuff like this falls under just average for me. Mildly interesting prod but I really am not a big fan of this kinda stuff. I don't dislike it either tho.

¿: Majical Cloudz - Downtown

This is a song that lies in between ok and good for me desu. It's got a sorta comfy vibe but at the same time feels sorta bland. It's ayt tho. Neato.

transgod: Cold Body Radiation - Radiance

KVLT. Ye, this was fine. Cold.

ricebeansandegg: Taishou Kyuunen - 小池の幽霊さん

Nice synth meme. Has a classic Japanese flavor. P ok.

Torts: Douji Morita - セルロイドの少女

Neato. Sounded p ebin. I get really lazy with these """reviews""".

oneothe: Mine Kawakami - Tooge no Mori

Calm solo piano with birds and stuff. Don't like it that much but t's ayt.

RANKINGS:

1. yamir (/daily/bait rec tho tbqhwy)
2. jimmy jazz

4. Torts
5. ¿

Haven't heard that Oldfield but I'll have to check it out!

>since you're prob the biggest rap guy

I'm equal parts proud but ashamed of my pleb taste

I'm guessing you're gonna hate Run DMC but they're also essential y'know? 80s rap is so hit-or-miss though, it's up to you as far as that decade goes. I'd maybe replace that with Big Daddy Kane but maybe you've already heard him idk

Me Against the World is essential but I'd also suggest Moment of Truth or Death Certificate if you aren't a Pac kinda guy

Not sure how much you'll like Section.80, depends on how much you like Kendrick/jazz rap in general. Fairly essential even if it's streaky. Something more trap would be more essential but idk if it's in line with your taste

Not sure how helpful that is but hope it's alright lol
>>
>>72499652
i'm probably gonna keep DMC because my dad loves them and I've never checked em out. might replace pac with Death Certificate, and what trap stuff would you suggest for the '10s? i was thinking something by Future or Big Baby D.R.A.M.
>>
>>72499686
Yeah DMC is worth a shot if you keep in mind that it's a bit dated

Pac and Cube are equally important it's just up to you. I'd suggest Monster by Future or some Gucci depending on what kind of trap you want idk I'm terrible at judging modern hip-hop t b h
>>
>>72499747
ooh, how about LiveLoveA$AP instead of kendrick and something trap instead of Big Boi? i think it'd be important to have a cloud rap release on the chart.

Yeah Amerikkka's is way heavier so it has more dated production but you probably won't hear any MC angrier than Cube on those first two/three albums. It's tight (but Pac is obviously dope too if you wanna dig more into his stuff too) I'm sure you'll at least appreciate it.
