HOLY FUCKING SHIT THEY FUCKING BEHEADED THAT GUITAR
>>
Hi everyone. I'm left-handed but I've been playing right-handed for 6 years now because of my first teacher who said that it would have been the same either way. I have no problems playing some lick or riff that I have practiced a lot, but whenever I do something unusual my right hand tends to mess things up, hitting wrong strings. I also feel like I just can't go over a certain downpicking speed no matter how much I practice. Should I switch to left-handed or keep practicing this way? Thanks in advance :)

Go left-handed, there's really no reason not to these days. Pretty much every model comes in a lefty version.

You'll probably find you play like a retard for a while but it shouldn't take long to find your groove.

>>72352296
Yeah but I'm afraid that I'll just waste time while switching to left-handed when I could use that time progressing right-handed. Do you think that there's a limit to the progress you can make as far as non-dominant hand control goes?
>>

>>72352380
>Do you think that there's a limit to the progress you can make as far as non-dominant hand control goes?

No, but I think that the extra time it would take to learn something on your off-hand would add up over time to be greater than if you switched over. The skills you've learned should be transferrable, it'll just be really awkward for a couple of months. You'll have to consciously think of where your fingers go rather than just doing it, but it's not like you'll suddenly be a completely new player.

Does anybody know any companies that makes vintage style tuners that would fit a strat without drilling new holes?

I feel like every musician i talk to has so many god damn rules and like some kinda weird ideology behind their own music that just makes them get in their own way

Is replacing pickups hard? Is it something i could do with basic soldering experience?

So I replaced the bridge on my J bass because it was giving me grief. Problem with this high mass bridge is that it raised the action a mile high. I fixed it with a few shims in the neck joint, but now I have another problem: the pickups are too damn far from the strings. I have more padding/foam to put under them, but the mounting screws are too short. Does anyone know where I can get No. 4 1.5-2" screws?

Find something that you like and then figure it out.Seriously.
That's how I started learning about 8 or 9 years ago. The music theory will come over time.
For me personally, I could never make myself learn theory, so I just played along to music that I enjoyed. About 5-6 years in I started to really enjoy studying it, and it carried on from there.

>>
>>72352823
I would put a block under the bridge and screw in the new bridge like it was going into a semi-hollow.
>>
>>72353131
google is your friend, but here's the jist
pickups detect the vibrating strings as magnetic vibrations affecting the pole pieces. The winding of the coil is either clockwise or anticlockwise, with two outputs.
The output is alternating (sinewave) current. depending on where you put the groundwire and "hot" wire, the output from each pickup can be positive/up or negative/down. If you wire them out of phase, the two signals cancel out and you'll notice your sound is very tinny and thin. Wire them in phase and you'll have a normal sound, because the two signals aren't interfering.
>>
>>72353220
How do you tell? Is it just a matter of not being pants-on-head retarded and making sure to connect the right color wires to where they were with the old pickups?

Wire all the ground leads onto a ground point like the back of the volume pot, wire the hot leads to the right contact on the switch and you're done

>>
>>72353387
yeah should work fine, even thinline hollowbodies like the casino have a decent acoustic sound.
>>
>>72353309
If in doubt, try the black wire to ground first and the not black wire to the switch. If it sounds weak and trebly with two pickups selected then one of them is out of phase, reverse the wires from that pickup.
>>
>>72352496
There are 3 schools of thought, generally, when you get to a certain level

1. Let me see how much I can push myself
2. I'm fucking great, I don't need to get better
3. I've accomplished my goals...and it's not as exciting as I expected

You can have all 3 ideas in your head. I'm number 3, with a little bit of number 1. I played mostly punk, honestly, stuff where you didn't need to be good to play. I still learned in depth theory, practiced patterns, learned shapes, proper technique and practiced to a metronome. I've got great speed, phrasing, timing... big whoop. I have played in over a dozen groups from different genres. It's been fun, each new style brings new challenges. I fucking hate pop country, but because of that it was probably biggest challenge I've faced in the last 3 years.

Guitar is fun, but I know my way around it. When I pick it up I can play whatever I want. The only ways to go are more dissonance, more odd times, or more speed. None of that interests me.

I've pretty much stopped playing guitar. I bought drum kit, I mostly play that now, more physically demanding, the foot work required threw me through a loop for months. I play my bass a lot more than ever, and I've been playing keyboard as well. I'd probably play keys more but I'm having to approach theory much differently than guitar, almost to a point of having to delearn guitar. While that alone is very challenging it's more frustrating than anything.
I've
.
.
Really didn't mean to make this my personal blog. Basically, it's really easy to hit a point where things like soloing don't interest you as much as they used to. I go out drinking with a few musician buddies every so often and it always comes up, it's easy to just hit a point where the things you used to aspire to be don't have the same appeal once you become them.
>>
>>72353386
It's good enough for Yolanda Charles and I'm going to marry her. So that's a good endorsement.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVBOWjX8gP0
>>
>>72353555

Same here. Oncce you can do it to the level you always aspired to, it becomes impossible to motivate yourself to learn new stuff. If I really tried hard then I could get good enough to play jazz fusion which I really hate. So I do my thing, I play anything I want to play and if I don't play for a few months then it takes me a couple of hours practice to get the motor skills back.So I don't play anywhere near as much as I used to but I still have the occasional day when I'll drag a guitar out of the closet and run through some songs that I love. To be honest, I get more pleasure from rhythm playing than endless solos, I'm much happier hammering a Telecaster than wailing away at the dusty end of the neck.

>I want to write music that I want to listen to.

That's all I do. The trick is to stop copying people and do your own thing. There's no point being a tenth-rate Ace Frehley copy or a bar room Stevie Ray Vaughan, that's been done a thousand times and another clone of their music is about as creative as photocopying the Mona Lisa.

If you write, learn keyboards and drum programming. It's extremely difficult to find people who share your vision in original music so do as much as you can yourself. And force yourself to sing, even if you think you've got a voice like a goose farting in the fog. You'll get better at it.

It's a weird place to be at, you nether stagnate, stop playing, start teaching, start auditioning form touring acts, or join a cover band and make some cash playing weddings.

Honestly the event circuit ain't that bad, you meet some really talented people, usually who are either humble or have a good sense of humor. They all know what it is, have fun, kill the dead air, go back to work Monday. You'll get some divas, had a bassist in his 50s thinking his big break is tomorrow. But I also had a group where no one gave a fuck about it, and got up there acting a fool and killing every set(we actually had about 50 people huddled around our shitty COVER band once). I made $500 for 30 minutes once, we played an awards ceremony for some fortune 500 company, we just played Motown. I have a lot of fun because of the people.

>>72353898
Been there, all you gotta do is find a goal and you'll be back in it.

>>72353939
He's probably not 800lbs

>>72354062
That's big thing keeping me playing in my free time. I've got like 3 albums worth of pop punk to record. Yep, pop punk, like of with their heads meets recent propagandhi. Simple music, but lots of tempo changes, rhythm, solos, and weird chords. I love the music, love the singalongs, even if most most of it it fucking devoid of creativity and intricacy.

You'll eventually hit a level with technique past what you ever expected to have, and it'll be weird. I find myself questioning if I'm making a good choice or just trying to show off all the time when writing stuff.

>>
>>72354398
Okay, that seems to be a good way of doing it. Thanks famalam.
>>
>>72354364
I did it first by learning where all the chord shapes were, play a progression in every possible location on the neck, use an E shape barre, A shape barre and a C shape barre (yes there is a C shape barre chord) then figure out what each note is in each chord you're playing, where the root, third and fifth are, where the dominant seventh is. Then figure out where the nearest scale is to those chords and suddenly you can play anything anywhere on the neck.

Worked for me, YMMV.
>>
>>72354498
That is actually pretty good dude. Do you use the CAGED system? I need to relearn that system again for the purpose you just stated. I have been messing around with triads lately, they are pretty useful for this purpose as well. Thanks dude.
>>
>>72354547
It also opens up a whole world of arpeggios. Just fly over to whatever chord shape is nearest and BAM, there's your arpeggio.
>>
>>72354547

The way I cheated was octaves, as well as different patterns(pentatonic 1st shape, 5th shape, starting on all strings). Modes help for this, just learn where the root is in the pattern.

A common thought process I have.

Start in A pentatonic in 5th position
hit G on a string with ring finger, slide to the a
Now you can play in the 5th shape for pentatonic in the 10th position

it works across the neck, do the same thing in E at the 12th position, slide into the E at the 17th fret, you're now all the way up the neck.

learn as many patterns as you can, learn where the root is in relation to them and you'll be able to find your way up from first position to the highest fret on high e bending to get the pitch you want.

There are many more things you'll eventually need to do to reach the next level, but that'll give you pretty much a free pass to run around.

>>72354418
I'm dying. My sides. You just joined up with the wrong group. Join a group that does some Michael Jackson, watch people in their 50s get down like they're back in the 80's and trying to fuck. It's really no different than playing guitar. Just put yourself in social situations where being a musician is relevant, and then talk to people.

It's not the 1960s, you're not Eric Clapton. Have a fucking original thoight, stop trying to live out your dream of being a blues god. 99.999% of people do not give a shit about guitar solos. Write a fucking song, quit trotting out the same tired old blues shit that's been done a billion times before and a billion times better than you can ever do it.

This is only good advice for someone looking to become a B-list musician. You can teach the blues, you can play the blues for money-- it's half academic at this point, if you have the connections, you could probably make 30-40k a year just teaching blues guitar 15-20 hrs a week.

You can't play blues any better than the millions of other wannabes who wank up and down the pentatonic scale all day every day, have an original thought or stop playing

Also, that's not a Les Paul, it's a shit tier copy. Yet another part of your fantasy life. You pretend you're Ace Frehley, you pretend to have a Les Paul, you pretend to be Steviw Ray Vaughan, all you do is pretend to be something you're not.

Yo, anon hurr that bought e drum kit the other day. Anon was asking to keep updates about how it affects my guitar playing. so aside from doing fill exercise and playing beats to a click I've been looking up radio songs on youtube to play along to, and clicking the first related link(even if I never heard it before) and trying to lock in the drum track. Eventually a rage against the machine track came up and i started grooving to them. I liked them when I was young cause they made me think of fugazi with a rapper trying to be radio friendly. I locked in and the guitar\bass were playing a pretty nice groove but then I realized the drummer was simply playing kick on 1 and 3 and snare on 2 and 4 and it just popped into my head, "give the band room to breathe for this one." This is going to be fun.

Intention. Noodling doesn't have any intention, it's there for the sake of being there. Hence "mindless".
Playing fast doesn't make it noodling. I think nameless, generic pentatonic going up and down is the same as very fast michael angelo batio playing scales on all the neck.

It plays great, very thin neck. To me it didn't really sound that good until I put stainless steel strings on them, but to be fair my technique has improved a lot in since then. With the right technique it can sound really fierce, it also responds really well to distortion/overdrive pedals. My only gripe would be 20 fret neck as I'd rather have a few more, but it's not that big of an issue.
Keep in mind that Geddy basses are produced in Mexico now (unless you're going for the more expensive American version), so I'm not sure how it holds up to the Japanese basses. I've read plenty of good stories about the Mexican ones online though. Try before you buy either way.

Eh, playing in a cover band can be pretty fun unless you absolutely hate the music you're playing.
>>

You know what I mean, I don't want to join a purely covers band.

I feel you anon. I've found a couple of musicians I can get together with and have blast playing whatever style/genre comes naturally in the moment. Finding people who are open like that is difficult. A lot of musicians treat music as their "thing" that they define themselves with. It makes it too personal for them and really shuts them down. Instead of their identity coming through in their playing, they try to create an identity through their playing and by sticking to genres that project the image they want.

You learn a lot of interesting things about human psychology playing with other musicians.

I play in literally every standard tuning from E to B standard so I have 5

one in Eb
One in D
One in C
one in C#
and a 7 string that covers B and E standard

It's just gimmicky modelling shit made in an Indonesian sweatshop. Save up for a DSL.

>>72365723
They're pretty good, you'll start to see the limitations of it real quick though. But don't fall for the "you'll never have to buy a pedal again" bullshit

Hey friends, I can barre the first fret with my finger and every note sounds, but when I try shaping the F chord strings start muting and all my fingers angle towards the first fret.

What can I do to fix this? Just practice more and maybe train my fingers to separate better?

Realistically how if I am a 19 year old with a job and no school and have an average of 40 hours of free time every week: if I started now how long till I get "good". Fuck I wish I had tried guitar back in highschool

5 - 6 years, unless you just wanna strum chords or play blues. 10+ if you wanna play crazy fast technical metal or jazz

>>72366826
stop thinking about being "good". you will never be as good as you want. Learn the basics, practice the songs you really like. learn the advanced tecniques as you go along. If you force your self to try and do things you wont like you wont like playing. really important to memorize and play things over and over till you feel the music.
>>
>>72367112
what did you pay? did you buy it new? only plebs buy new guitars.

pawnshops and ebay can be a gold mine- to the point where you can profit down the road when you go to sell it

is there such a thing as an echo pedal? is it a delay? reverb?

i was to autism to buy used, i just bought it new for 330. Want it to be set up perfect when I get it. Probably gonna use it for the rest of my life
>>
so to tune my guitar to drop D do I just tune my low E to D and leave all the other strings alone or do I have to redo all of them?
>>
>>72367326
>echo pedal
sounds like just a regular digital reverb
or it could be some after effect from the studio that they added
>>
>>72367680
you gotta down tune all the strings
>>
>>72367680
lol
>>
>>72367653
>Probably gonna use it for the rest of my life
Yeah I'll bet, you'll probably kill yourself within 2 weeks because you bought this cheap piece of shit.
>>
>>72367680
You tune all your strings to D in different octaves and then drop it on the floor so it's slightly out of tune, gives it that real heavy feel.
>>
>>72367720
>talking shit about low end yamaha guitars

look at this faggot that doesn't know shit
>>
>>72367680
you just write the letter d on a paper then "drop it" on the floor and then lay the guitar over the paper gently and start air humping while chanting the words "tune tune tune tune" over again

shit's done in about 50 minutes
>>
I think ill just take out all the strings and only leave the low E then tune that fucker to D and that's how its done
>>
>>72367301
if your still here- what did you pay for the AV7 guitar?

i have one im trying to sell for $500, ebays has them listed around 600-800 but no one wants it
>>
>>72367490
what the acoustic you want? is it a Yamaha ?
>>
>>72367873
lmao no. thats a conde flamenco model.
>>
>>72367839
About $1200 which is what they cost new.

Post pictures of it and I'll tell you how much it's worth, because there are different versions of it.
>>
>>72368062
i dont have a pic right now, its at my work

what do you mean there are different ones? ive looked up the model, its the same one i see selling for $600. mine is in perfect condition
>>
>>72368129
Standard has a bolt on neck and cheaper hardware, Custom is the regular version and Custom S has the Sustainiac, so obviously they're different prices.
>>
>>72368146
i could be very wrong. this is the guitar

That's the regular Custom. Depending on the condition it's in you could probably get away with asking $700 for it.
>>
>>72368250
>>72368284
>>
>>72368295
so $700?
>>
>>72368487
As long as it's in good condition (meaning no damage whatsoever) about 700, if you need to sell it quick you could throw something extra like new strings and what not, I don't really know.
