>>
>>72314618
Just buy parts on ebay. You can find lots of cool bodies and necks and make any kind of guitar you can imagine. Just be mindful that anything you build has to have either a 24 3/4 or 25 1/2 scale length when its finished or the whole thing will be junk.

Very overlooked consideration am9ng newbie builders

What does /gg/ know about Jacksons? No memes please, this is a serious post that calls for serious replies.
>>
>>72314618
I wasn't exaggerating last night when I said it was dogshit. Seriously one of the worst guitars I've ever owned. The headstock is really small and weird, the neck profile is awful, that licensed floyd is awful, the emg hzs suck, the knobs for the tuning machone broke off on mine, i had to drill out the holes for the strap button and put a dowel in them. And this was mostly in less than 2 years of use. The inlays are super lame.

Seriously, there are so many better slabs out there to use as a project. You'll never be able tonfind a replacement neck, you'll either have to make one or find a luthier to make one. ESP wouldn't even tell me if a neck from an old eclipse might fit.

I don't care about the hardware, all of it would be getting replaced. I kinda like the headstock though, and I like the spider inlays too, I wouldn't replace the neck.

Besides I wouldn't be able to get a 603 with a neck through instead because those are out of production. I just know if I don't get it I'll regret it later, plus it's only $135 so who gives a shit.

I'm just worried about meeting the guy, you never know with mexicunts.

Found this on YT, you can tell he replaced the Floyd for an original one but the pickups are the same stock shit and it doesn't sound terrible.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7PtwCD0HWs

If the guy is willing to replace all hardware maybe it would be a well spent $135
>>
>>72314983
They're in a toolbox in the garage(was using a caliper to measure to find replacements), i can look tomorrow and post it. It barely looks like a les paul in real life. Upper fret access is horrible. I got one from the store, they set it up. When I came back they showed me the high e couldn't be intonated because the saddle was as far forward as it could go. They had to order me a new one. Got it around 2007.

Honestly, if you just want a les paul with a floyd why not get an FRX
https://youtu.be/hVjMrFbNhGg
You going to wanr to shell out some cash for an official floyd anyways with the 203.

I replaced my floyd with an original as well, and the store replaced the first one I got cause it was defective. The emgs made it about 4 months before I started swapping in different pickups from my collection.

In that video it sounds mediocre but passable, but he's also not playing chords, or playing clean, or doing anything besides playing single note lines with dirt and reverb. It really just sounds like the amp sim he's using.

It was alright for the first month or so, and things started to fail. First thing was the inside of the screws for the locking nut, they started to round off. I was using the factory provided allen wrench and never used anything but. Ended up needing to buy new screws and take the old ones out with pliers.

>they showed me the high e couldn't be intonated because the saddle was as far forward as it could go
Well that's why I don't buy guitars with Licensed Floyds new, I bet that fucking shit was like $650 when it came out, wasn't it? But for 1/5th of the price it just doesn't look like a bad deal to me, the damage it has is easily fixed, I searched the whole site for a better candidate for my next project and nothing else looks interesting.

And hell no, FRX is like $250, $300+ with shipping to beanerland, that's way more than I'm willing to pay for a bridge. I've owned Original and 1000 Series Floyds and they're good but I've also never had any problems with FR Specials and they're like $90.
New pickups, bridge, tuners, paint and all it ends up at like $450 which is still cheaper than the original price.

I'll be honest, you probably won't convince me not to get it, I just know I can polish this turd.

>>
>>72315565
Its soft. The strap buttons pulled out after a year of gigging. Mime has a huge gouge from bumping against a road case, after 2 pickup changes I had to put wood filler in the holes for the pickup rings because they wouldn't grip. each ply is under a half inch, body os probably 9 ply. The screws for the trem claw never had an issue after many adjustments though.

Actually, thinking back I remember really liking the control placement.

Good because that's one of the most important things and it would be kinda hard to fix. I don't think I would be abusing the whole thing too much though, I'm just a bedroom warrior.

>Actually, thinking back I remember really liking the control placement
Already starting to change your mind? lol
By the way, you said you changed the pickups, what did you install before giving up on it? And why is it missing the neck pickup now?

>>
>>72314300
How do I learn how to make basslines as opposed to just learning existing basslines? Like, how I should interact with the drummer rhythm wise and what notes I should play (root and fifth, how/when I can play something else, etc.)
>>
>>72318164
I mean, learning existing basslines is a good way to teach yourself how to create new ones, since you'll want to get comfortable playing several different kinds of music in order to compose the appropriate basslines within those mediums. Strong chord tones like the root, fifth, third, and seventh are generally played on the downbeat while sixths, ninths, and passing tones are played on the upbeat. The best time to move from one musical idea to the next is when everyone else does, usually when the chord changes. You'll see how this works by learning popular basslines and listening to how those parts work within the larger musical context of a given piece.
>>
>>72317650
>lap steel
>blisters

you know you're not meant to hold down chords on the neck right?
>>
>>72318164
I don't think there's any foolproof method, just a lot of different approaches and your own intuition. Personally, I like to first try "conversing" with the various instruments for a starting point. I think about how the other melodies or rhythms could either be filled in (added to) or simplified (subtracted from). I play a lot of instruments so this approach helps me focus in on how the rest of the music is being pushed and pulled by my bassline. When I do this I pretty much try to ignore the vocals at first, then adjust to them last. This is good for noisier or busier music where you have a lot of freedom.

Another approach is to get something you like rhythmically with just roots and 5ths and 3rds, strictly following the chords, and start adding a bunch of passing notes. Then listen for what notes have a really harmonic sound to them, and try working your bassline around those notes, possibly by adding some more of them, putting them on the first beat, or trying to put them were there is some space.

When all else fails, roots and fifths following the kick drum, and slides up an octave for fills.

These aren't very sophisticated methods, but hey, my theory is a bit weak. I try.

They are clearly electric guitars, they were just designed to fulfill the role that upright basses had up to that point. It's not like Leo Fender designed an electric upright bass and ended up putting frets on it, he clearly designed an electric guitar (body shape, neck, pickups, frets, everything about it) that was tuned like an upright bass.

Does anyone else love seeing their instruments decay over time?
My acoustic is loaded with picking marks right by the neck where I play and you can tell which frets I use the most by which has the most wear and tear
I like how it makes my style of playing visible

Yep. That's why I'll never buy a 'roadworn' instrument, I'd rather (unintentionally) do that to my instrument myself over the years.
As long as the instrument remains playable, or you're never planning to resell it of course.

>>72323797
No difference but it looks like it's more expensive. This one is a small body but it claims to be all solid woods, might sound pretty good.

Okay, I'm not a huge fan of this kind of thing so I am biased but I'll give you my best shot. You can get a ton of the sounds I've seen in the 2 demos I've watched by using other techniques or pedals. Mixing and matching while going crazy on your guitar is why noise rock or noise whatever is fucking fun. Watching some guy lean down to tweak the knobs on this one pedal would be less fun. That is assuming you rely on it that way.

Granted! This does simplify things if you only need noise every now and then. It is a convenience. but it would be more fun to make a crazy noise using a pedal and some technique or funky note choice then sample it, play over that, throw it in reverse. Shoot some audience member in the face, sample that, and on and on.

That's my take.

Yeah noise rock is an entirely different thing, most of the energy in that music comes from the intensity of the actual guitar playing. This is more of a knob twiddling pedal, giving you lots of timbral options. You can set it and forget it but the best use is to constantly tweak it. Merzbow has one in his rig, just another textural tool really.

No power, typically the transformer.

Tubes come on but low volume, possible tube issue. Tap on the tubes with a pencil. Bad one should make a sound.
>>
>>72325370
fuck that's awesome man. I've always wanted to get into modular gear but it's so expensive. How much do you think everything there cost you?
>>
>>72325421
>yes the power light and the tube are still glowing

check the HT fuse, if it's blown then replace it. if it keeps blowing then your amp's bias is set wrong and the tubes are drawing too much current.

insufficient negative bias = increased anode current = blown HT fuse

>>
>>72325428
>ill-informed bullshit.

Power but no sound is almost always the HT fuse. Tapping a good tube or a bad tube makes exactly the same sound, you only tap tubes when the amp is working and you want to test for a tube going microphonic.

I don't even like to add up how much I've spent on the modular but it's a fuck of a lot. It's getting cheaper for me now because I'm building modules from DIY kits, the whole top rack (left rack in the pic because Windows phone doesn't rotate properly) is stuff I've built.

>>72325474
>took the fuse off, how to tell if its blown
If it's not blown then you'll see a wire inside it going from one end to the other. If there's any scorch marks or the wire is broken then it needs replacing.

ZVEX Wooly Mammoth (they make clones for like $40)
>>
>>72325712
Right then. You need a new tube in there.

DO NOT TRY TO PUT THE OLD TUBE IN, YOU COULD ENTIRELY FUCK YOUR AMP FOREVER IF YOU GET IT MISALIGNED. /caps

Pull the pin out of the socket with INSULATED pliers. Get new tube(s). Learn how to put tubes in gently but firmly, the right way round.

Just to explain the bit about not putting that tube back in, it's possible you've damaged the pin by inserting the tube the wrong way so the locating pin has misaligned. That could result in incorrect connections to the high tension supply. Get a replacement tube, learn to put it in without being a ham-fisted twat.
>>
>>72325795
Also, learn to fully explain the nature of the problem when asking for help. Your amp hasn't "gone mute", you've rammed a tube in the wrong way and possibly fucked it over.
>>
>>72325790
>ZVEX Wooly Mammot
that sounds great, has a nice punch and I like that for my RIC

>>
>>72325822
And, AND ... protip for removing tubes that you're going to put back in. Get a Sharpie, draw a line down the tube base onto the chassis. Use masking tape if you don't want to mark the chassis. Then when you replace the tube, line up the Sharpie lines.
>>
>>72325846

will i damage that contact metal in there if i touch it with the plier
>>
>>72325914
>why is that for. the tubes have locating pin

>why does a complicated electronic device have to have eight pins connected to the correct fucking holes

Because tube amps use about 500 Volts for the anodes and 6.3 Volts for the heaters. And if you ram the tube in any way it's possible you'll connect 500V to the heaters. And you may just connect the other side of the heater to ground, in which case you're lucky if you don't get a loud bang and a cloud of smoke from the amp.

If you're asking questions like this and fucking your amp so badly then you are clearly entirely fucking incompetent. Take your amp to a repair man and tell him what a fucking retard you've been. And believe me, he will fucking laugh in your face when you show him how badly you just fucked your amp over.
>>
>>72325985
Stop now. Really, stop.

A tube amp can store around 500 Volts in the filter capacitors even when it's switched off. You can get a lethal shock from an amp that's been powered down for an hour.

Stop what you're doing, take the amp to someone who knows amp repair and pay for your stupidity in hard fucking cash now. Otherwise you are running the risk of electrocuting yourself.
>>
>>72325992

>>
>>72326033
this

but I thought this guy figured it out already?
>>
>>72326036
The tape thing is a double check that the tubes are aligned properly. Because it's important to align the tubes correctly. Otherwise you risk snapping the locating pin off, inserting the tube incorrectly and fucking your amp over. Like you just did. You fucking idiot.

Now stop fucking around with things you don't understand and find a repair guy.

Good idea. Honestly I've been shocked by 700 volts before and it wasn't even that bad. It's pretty hard to kill yourself with only 400v caps.

Not sure why. If he made a video I could easily help him but he seems to have it under control. I've been in the business for awhile and I work on amps a lot. He's got nothing to worry about if he's grounded.

Acoustic guitars don't have this problem
>>
>>72326527
He won't die. It's a common myth that tube amps are dangerous. Like I said I've been working on them for years and have done a lot of risky shit. As long as he grounds himself with his flip-flop he is fine.

They do though. NC means no connection. Some manufacturers don't put a pin there. Marshall use the socket pin on the inside as an extra soldering point to mount the screen grid resistors.

ECC83 is the European equivalent tube, it's exactly the same as a 12AX7. Same heater voltage, same amplification factor and same mutual conductance. Fucking educate yourself you dickweed.

I was pissed that I missed my friend trying to fix his Fender Evil Twin one time. He snapped the top off a preamp tube then tried to, get this, blu-tak the glass envelope back together.

With the amp plugged in and switched on.

Apparently he flew backwards across the room and couldn't move his arm for an hour. Would have loved to see that.

I hope we get back to deciding who the best guitarist is soon
>>
>>72327492
It's obviously Sammy I mean his Ace frehley technique is on par with the man himself. Kiss could use a new lead guitarist. I work for a big record label and I'm trying to get my boss to give Sammy a record deal.
>>
>>72327515
I heard he was makinga blues album. That's what all the kids are into these days, they can't get enough 12-bar blues with pentatonic solos over the top for half a fucking hour. Groundbreaking stuff.

Ace Frehley is probably the most versatile guitarist. I mean guys like Joe Pass, Mark Knopfler, and EVH can all play but they don't have the technique and feel Ace has. E minor pentatonic and Barre chords are the peak of guitar playing. Sammy has a bright future.
>>
>>72328811
It's not just E minor you know. I seen him play some crazy shit in A one time.

low tone, low volume knob, neck pickup, warm-sounding amp with the treble rolled down. He's probably not using any compression pedal.
