Literally what else is there? Song length doesn't determine genre and vocals rarely do although coincidentally are important in differentiating black metal. Antichrist was the very first song to ever make the crossover from hardcore to metal with grindcore.

penultimate Satan trips confirm
You are now aware Sepultura invented grindcore
Is this really what "death metal" means to kids today? Because I don't want to say "I like death metal" and assume i listen to faggoty bands like this

>>72274661
It's Deathcore you fucking nerd
>>72274555
Grindcore is more than just having grindcore styles riffs. Early Sepultura's song construction is pure old school death metal.
>>72274962
I'm exclusively talking about the song Antichrist. I understand that he relentlessly hammers at one chord but at the end of the song there is a different progression which qualifies. Again not that I think it's required but it's there for good measure.
>>72275040
I know, but Antichrist is not a grindcore song. That's all I'm saying.
>>72275064
Just because he sits on one chord? He doesn't do that at the end. Not to mention the whirlwind solo gets the point across as well.

What are you trying to say? The song is almost 4 minutes long, and it's grindcore because of a 20 second section? The songwriting and riffing throughout most of the song isn't reminiscent of grindcore. Chaotic soloing does not make something grindcore either, otherwise Slayer and Bathory would be.

>>72275441

Well my main assertion was just that Sepultura invented it. If you're willing to concede the end of the song then I think that's a fair compromise.
>Chaotic soloing does not make something grindcore either
Combined with a blastbeat I think its gets the point across. I dont recall Slayer ever using them but maybe I missed something by Bathory
>>72275551
>If you're willing to concede the end of the song then I think that's a fair compromise.
I am.
>Combined with a blastbeat I think its gets the point across.
Both of those elements are both commonly found in death metal that is pretty far removed from grindcore.
https://youtu.be/yew9L0Xjm_g?t=4m29s
Slayer has some pretty nasty soloing back in the day, and anything on Bathory's black metal albums is a given.

Oh boy here we go
The beginning of Suffocation is a much better example of the importance of blastbeats relation to the guitar and the context of the song
Bleed for the Devil is literally classic multiple minute grindcore. On the same label as Scum two years later I know it's mind blowing but just try.
>>72276071
Any mistakes are my fault, I don't play guitar and sometimes it sounds the same to me through distortion.
That aside, the riffing on Bleed for the Devil appears to me as longer and more melody focused than any grindcore I've heard.
>>72276265
No prob, I admit this is actually my first time hearing a Morbid Angel album so speaking of mind blowing.

>>72276387
>this is actually my first time hearing a Morbid Angel album
That explains a lot.
>>72276517
It doesn't really change any of what I said though.
Bleed for the Devil sounds a little different on the 86 demo. I'm not sure I'm hearing any grindcore. Find of grindcore on the 89 album though. How some of the trickier percentage songs are defined is kind of beside the point I think. There are classic grindcore parts and classic death metal parts. Songs like Maze of Torment could very easily be labeled death metal/grindcore. There's no real reason it can't be both.
Fucking autocorrect
Find = lots

thoughts on the Sword?
I love it
>>72276629
There are definitely some riffs that wouldn't sound out of place on a grindcore record, but the final package is more death metal than anything to me. Most of the riffing is more complex, melodic, and less focused on sheer violence than grindcore, and the songwriting style doesn't have much to do with grindcore's signature short bursts of noise.
>>72276664
Not an argument.
Parts of Maze of Torment are grindcore and parts are death metal. That's basically the entire point of this album and consequently the entire genesis of this band. I know its crazy that a late 80s album on Earache would have grindcore on it but bear with me.
why is modern US metal such garbage
>>72276735
>>72276706
Agreed but I dont think it absolutely has to be one or the other. There's literally nothing wrong with death metal/grindcore

I think our disconnect here is that death metal and grindcore developed right alongside each other, so it can be confusing to try to discern what elements truly belong to each genre. If I hear a song like Bleed for the Devil, nothing screams "grindcore" to me and I associate all the elements displayed in that song with death metal. It's possible they were adopted from grindcore, but they are definitely an established part of what death metal eventually grew to be.

The beginning of Suffocation is the only part that's compositionally confusing as how to define I think. All the rest seems completely cut and dry. Otherwise only the percentages of these two styles within each song can be confusing as how to define the songs but again I think that's easily solved by simply refusing and just describing it as having definitive parts of both. Bleed for the Devil on the other band has some very interesting riffs compared to the rest of the album when there's not a blastbeat. Meaning that the riffs arent exactly death metal upon closer inspection. There's just really nothing about this song that isn't definitive grindcore.

>>72277478
Well speaking about Altars of Madness I'd say almost exclusively yes. Visions from the Darkside is a good example of a song with zero grindcore but if it simply had some blastbeats then it would have both styles. We're only dealing with two instruments here. A slight change in one can and has created whole new genres.
>>72277516
It's pretty fucking good, but it might do some good to make it a bit more organic looking. Still I would use it as is
>>72277549
It's kinda difficult to argue with someone who has such a different idea of what grindcore is. Since when is the blast beat exclusively part of grindcore? It's just as much an element of death metal as it is grindcore, regardless of where it originated. You're not going to call Darkthrone grindcore just because they used blast beats, right?
>>72277656
I didn't say it was or necessarily imply that.
If its ok I think we would be much better served by defining Napalm Death - Scum which is on the same record label just two years earlier and is most often considered the first grindcore album. Or is it not?
>>72277689
>I didn't say it was or necessarily imply that.
They why would the simple addition of blast beats turn Visions from the Darkside into grindcore?
Scum is the first clear-cut grindcore album as far as I know.
>>72277719
I said only parts of Vftd which is because of the guitar which at times is literally no different than the mother of all grindcore albums Scum. Literally three power chords. That's all we're talking about here. That is most often what's going on during both of these albums when there's a blastbeat.
>>72276425
I use google play music but artists like goatmoon and napalm death dont have their best allbums on there so i need a source

>>72274661

>>72277798
Which parts sound like Scum? Nothing there sounds anything like it to me. The riffing on Scum is shorter and more simplistic than anything on that MA track.
>>72277935
As for the blastbeat parts of Scum it's the opening riff from Vftd which is then repeated the first time at the 50 second mark. It sounds like basically 3 power chords with maybe a couple slides and trills thrown in for flair which is mostly absent in Scum. However there are numerous similarities to Scum on Vftd and other songs since Scum is very far from exclusively grindcore.
>>72278015
I think the chord progression of the opening riff is more complex and significantly less "punk" sounding than what's found on Scum.
>>72278128
It's literally three chords.
And what is this punk shit? The first time anything remotely analogous appears is on Sacrificed which is 7 songs and about ten minutes in. Scum is almost completely metal. Before Scum, Napalm Death were literally faggoty punk band aside from maybe the very previous demo. I listened to a ton of their preScum stuff the other week and turned it off in disgust.
>>72278177
A chord progression encompasses more than just the chords it uses. I can take three chords and write two different progressions with one being more complex than the other.
Scum just gives off punk vibes to me. Maybe it's just the structures.
>>72278258
If you want punk grindcore listen to Larm which predates Scum by a few years.
>>72278298
I will. I think the way Scum strings it's riffs together combined with the simplicity of some of the riffs is what gives me a punk vibe, but you're right, most of the stuff on there is metallic.

Can anyone rec me best funeral doom metal albums? Stuff that gives you a feeling of despair, not just fast hardcore shit. It's probably my favourite genre of metal.
and good build up too

Evoken - Antithesis of Light
Asunder - A Clarion Call (also the split with Graves at Sea is top tier)
Hierophant (literally any of his albums are great)
Thergothon - Stream from the Heavens
diSEMBOWLMENT - Tree of Life (death/funeral doom legends, this isn't that much despairing rather than bleak and void of emotions)
Funeral - From These Wounds (emotional funeral doom, two of the members have commited suicide also, so this is as melodramatic and fatalistic as it gets)

Wormphlegm- tomb of the ancient king

I was really digging this "From These Wounds" album for about 20 minutes but it got stale kinda quickly after that, felt repetitive. First 20 minutes were really nice though.

So apparently Blackmore's considering recording new original material with his new Rainbow lineup, the singer of which actually put out a new single today with a band he has with Magnus Karlsson and Mike Terrana. Great voice, though his accent has little cracks here and there.
