Anyone here play dobro or other lap steels? been thinking of buying a squareneck lately, but there isn't much to try out in my area
>>
How to get my strat to sound like a good strat
I put some 57/62 replicas on it and it sounded weak and lacking, and had some real ear piercing highs.

Because i that i swapped them for some overwound single coils. Like that Fender's srv Texas pickup, but even heavier. Shit has bass now.
But most of the quack is gone, that nice bright top end is gone and its full of muddy mids and high mids.

What do? Order some 57/62 that slighly overwound that gives bass but doesnt cut all the quack?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_CJIqPMyBs
This was recorded with a 62 reissue Japanese strat, how did they get this bassy, rich sound?
Other strats ive played with regular vintage pickups dont sound like that song. They sound ear piercing and thin like mine did, but not weak and lacking, and could probably result on that tone after recording and mixing.
>>
>>72240392
hows a dobro? a regular guitar thats worked to sound more like a lapsteel/pedalsteel?
>>
>>72240403
Get a good amp, learn to EQ and realize that the whole point of using a strat is the "twang".
>>
>>72240403
Use a good tube amp with slight break-up, use neck pickup and vol+tone controls on your guitar. Also fingers
>>
>>72240192
Can anyone recommend a good routine for learning barre chords? Been trying for a while, but was using heavy strings. Swapped them out for thinner strings now, so hopefully that'll help. I've made a fair bit of progress so far but I'd appreciate something that would help fine tune. Thanks.
>>
>>72240231
Sam you really need to get a life
>>
>>72240416
Dobro is actually a brand name (kind of like Kleenex) that's become the generic term for acoustics with resonator cones, often built specifically for playing with a steel or slide. Mostly used in country/folk bullshit.

It's basically an earlier version of electric steel guitar, and the technique is similar to nonpedal steel.
>>
>>72240454

>>
>>72240486
Thanks mate
>>
>>72240403
It's probably your amp. Texas Specials should sound pretty close to that clip.
>>
>>72240424
I tried boosting bass on my amp, and with amplitube and its EQ pedal, and it didnt help. At times it sounded bassy, but not with actual body.

I'm trying to find an old recording i did of the 57/62 sounding thin even with bass boost.

>>72240443
The tube break up actually helped to increase bass and body

>>72240454
For now, focus on barreing the first 3 strings only. Find a up/down spot with your index finger to match the finger bones on the strings. Also experiment with positioning the fingers

>>72240503
Mine arent actual Texas Specials, its similar but even more overwound and with different materials. This is the pickup model https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIin1JJgifc
I got it to get rid of the earpiecing highs and it actually rolled all the bright twang away
Maybe if i just get a Texas Specials set it would do already

>>72240481

Nice. I've thought about doing something like that someday, but I'm also pretty happy with what I have right now. I've got an old Gibson lap steel from the late 40s/early 50s that plays decent and sound great. Sorta of similar in shape to the design you posted.

C6 is cool but has kind of a steep learning curve, especially if you're getting into slants and so on. But well worth it if you're into Hawaiian and early country.

>>
>>72243125
I actually think the same, but I don't know much about modern jazz methods.
What would you put instead of Baker's jazz?
>>

I like Jody Fisher's Jazz Guitar Method as far as beginning books go. It's pretty approachable and specific, unlike Baker. And it's not sixty years old.

Hey /gg/

So the guitar below is my mexican Stratocaster SSS

I am very happy with every aspect of it apart from one and that is when I play with gain/distortion.

It just sounds very cheap and "thin"

I love the clean sound of a singlecoil but I think I need a humbucker to get that dirty "punk" sound that I like.

Could someone maybe show me a pickup that fits my criterea?

I have only been playing for 7 months to please go easy on me.
>>
I got a metronome app with a timer on it and it's making me realize I practice a lot less than I think I do. I though I'd done a lot of metronome practice today but I've only actually done 30 minutes.
>>
>>72243496
>the guitar below is my mexican Stratocaster SSS
There is no guitar below this post
>>
>>72243496
If you can't get a punk tone out of anything, you can't play worth shit
which is even more ironic when punks can't play
>>
>>72243422
Yeah, I hear a lot of praise for Baker, but I just didn't get as much out of it as others. It's heavy on demonstration and teaching by example. It gives you specific chords, substitutions, licks, etc. to play but only scratches the surface on theory. (either it assumes you know it, or very vaguely explains things).

Mostly it feels like you're learning to "sound" like a jazz guitarist but not learning to "think" like one. It's pretty hard to go in your own direction from what you're given.

Fisher starts with theory/concepts and then goes into examples, and for me that helped build on them on my own. I feel like it does a better job of helping people "think" in a jazz sense, and develop their own ideas and sound.

>>
>>72243704

fuzz is great, but not a punk tone per se. fuzz is more hendrix, sabbath, stoner rock tone. big muff is more of a fuzz-flavoured distortion pedal than a true fuzz, but totally worth it. go try some out at your local guitar shop. (also try out a proco rat and a boss ds-1)

Hey nerds. I'm starting to research classical/nylon string guitars so I can upgrade from my CG101 that I got in high school 8 years ago.

What are some nylon acoustic guitar memes that should be avoided? I won't get a cutaway so you skip that. I assume wood choice will actually matter a lot more than electric. Is that the case? Do I really need to care about how the bracing is set up and other details like that? Good brands? I'm looking to get an all solid wood guitar if I can.

I'm researching on my own but it would be nice to hear some opinions. Pic unrelated.

Once it's level, retune. Rinse and repeat until it's solid and stays in tune. Look up a video too. That'll help.

<one minute long 12 bar blues pentatonic rock intro>
What's up everyone it's Rob Chapman. Today we'll be demoing the Line 6 Spider VIâ„¢ modeling amplifier. I've got my Chapman Guitars BR00TALDJ3NT here with the optional extra noisy EMGs and double pointy headstock. Let's check out how it sounds on the clean channel.
<pentatonic blooz wankery>
Very good, nice low end. Let's try a bit more gain.
<bad ACDC riffs>
Alright, now let's turn it all the way up.
<fizzy mid-scooped official Dorjeâ„¢ riffs>
Very nice. Now let's check out the onboard effects, staring with the reverb. This is a copy of the Ibenis SuperVerb which was released in 1969 and which had a limited run of 69.
<barely audible echo applied to generic 4 chord strumming>
They've replicated the sound of the SuperVerb perfectly! Not that you have a way to judge.
And now the phaser. This is a copy of the Boss PH-01, a garbage tier phaser produced in the 80's until it was dropped due to low demand.
<air raid sirens>
Very nice indeed! Let's look at the included distortion and overdrive next. Line 6 created a nearly perfect copy of the Boss Metal Zone on this amp, including the nearly unusable controls and the fizzy, useless sound it creates. The distortion is a copy of the Dumble DS-1, a Boss distortion pedal that was once within a mile of a Dumble knockoff sold on Craigslist by a crackhead. With such a premium sound to live up to, the amp does well beyond my expectations.
<palm-muted power chords>
<distorted palm-muted power chords>
<overdriven palm-muted power chords>
And that's all for the Line 6 Spider VIâ„¢! You can get this amp directly from Anderton's for the low price of $299.99. See you next time!

i do think people should walk away from experiences with some kind of token to remind them later that it happened, no matter how seemingly banal or insignificant it is, even if they were a mediocre participant in whatever it was.
you might've hated that year you played little league baseball when you were 12 because you sucked or because your parents made you, but that experience had some kind of effect on you and the people who were there with you, good or bad, and that's worth being reminded of because it's influenced who you are today, whether you realize it or not. if some lame participation trophy does that for you, or for anybody for that matter, then i say it's maybe not such a bad thing

Where exactly do I start with learning music theory? I've been playing guitar for years and I'm decent enough but I've been having a real hard time coming up with anything decent lately. It feels impossible to create a unique melody that sounds good. I always avoided music theory because I can never find a starting point and it feels overwhelming.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnGp2o7GCfE

Someone please link a non-metal solo that is harder to play than this
>>
>>72255254
In my experience, the best way for guitarists to start with developing their theory knowledge is to build off of what they already know. I'm sure you know how to play a major scale, so go from there and learn the seven modes derived from the major scale, then how to build chords based off of those modes. Google "diatonic theory" to get started.
>>
>>72255298
Do improvised solos count? Because it seems like metal is the only genre which places a high premium on rehearsed, incredibly technical solos. I can think of several improvised solos that are more difficult than this, although they're all by fusion guys and were probably improvised in the studio since they aren't duplicated live. Anything by Guthrie Govan, Shawn Lane, or Allan Holdsworth would fit the bill.

Otherwise, probably the most technical non-metal guitarist I know of that can replicate his studio-recorded solos live is Nels Cline of Wilco.

Alright /gg/, I'm looking for an amp and I don't care much about it other than it has to be loud and cheap. I don't even know what music I want to really do at this point, just something that can make noise, and won't limit me in any way.
That said I also hate modelling settings and cheap on board effects because they seem tacked on, but of course I won't care if it has it I just wouldn't use it.
I was thinking something like a fender twin but I was looking at a 40w Fender hot rod deluxe and it seemed loud enough turned up, only the clean could have been louder.

because the question is always some stupid shit like

>how do i get good at guitar
>i just learned X, what should i work on next
>how do i learn to play guitar like X
>i just got a guitar because X, how should i start
>i'm just getting back into guitar because of X, how should i start

Knowing intervals helps you play what you're imagining. Rather than just being in key, you are more aware of the feeling of each note. At least, that's the main thing I get from it. For example, I want to emphasize the major or minor sound of a chord, so I play a 3rd.

Might just be me though. Also, keeps you from getting lost on the fretboard.

I love the sound of a guitar playing the same thing simultaneously distorted, and clean. How can I achieve this WITHOUT splitting the signal and buying a second amp?

there's various pedals that blend in the distortion. You can also split the signal and send one end to the pre and one bypassing it, then combine the signals into the power section. You can also cut certain bands of your guitar with EQ before the preamp then boost them back up afterwards.

Why did they change the scene in the anime? Why is the anime so bad in general? Why are you posting such a stupid image? I just don't know.

you get a proper valve amp and set it on the edge of breakup

then when you dig in with your right hand, you'll get distortion. if you pick lightly, you'll be clean

But I want both at the same time, potentially high distortion combined with clean.

Fuck you're right, I didn't even consider bypassing the preamp. Guess buffer / splitter pedals are the next thing I'll make then.

man, that's not what he's asking.

Also for the last time you can do this with any clipping diode, if anything it's easier with solid states which generally distort more suddenly.

oh right he wants a stereo amp with one side turned up
