There's equal temperament across the fretboard for every regular 6 string electric guitar.

warwicks are certainly not for everyone but i love my german made corvette standard 5 string from '06, though it has a much thinner neck then most ive played. both are great options, i would also reccomend looking at a music man string ray. any of the three will be great work horse basses that will serve you well on any gig or recording session. just weigh think about what you want from it and try them all out (with a strap is a good suggestion).

So I just fixed up an old Yamaha FG 75 from the late 60's or early 70's (red label made in japan). It's completely beat to shit after being stored in a garage for years with no case.

I got it cleaned up and restrung and it's not too bad. Except the action. Holy shit it's almost a centimeter by the end of the board. The neck is actually pretty fucking straight so it's not a truss rod problem, it's just not parallel to the body which throws everything off. (The heel where it attaches to body is a little cracked but not enough to really get the action I am.) I'm thinking that the neck needs to be reset somehow and maybe the bridge needs to be adjusted/lowered.

How much would it cost to get this fixed? I do all of my own setups on my own guitars but I'm not as familiar with acoustics. Would it be worthwhile for me to learn how to put an acoustic together and do it myself? Could be fun.

I'd like to elaborate by saying that I can't fix this by sanding down the saddle, the nut is fine, and adjusting the truss rod really won't help either. I'm wondering if taking the neck and bridge off and reattaching them (or whatever actually needs to be done) is worth doing myself or getting done professionally.
>>
>>72203681
If the action's that high, check that the bridge hasn't deflected upward. If it has, you're pretty well fucked.
>>
>>72204016
>>72203908
from what it looks like the neck joint is obviously coming apart, which is the source of your obtuse neck angle
personally I would take it to a professional to repair the damage, since if you tried to do it yourself you run the risk of making it worse or snapping the whole damn neck off
>>
>>72204016
>>72204065

Put a steel ruler on top of the body, check if it's bulged upward at the bridge.
>>
>>72204065
The bridge is flush with the body, can't get paper in between, and it's not angled weirdly in any way.

>>72204079
I will if I have to. I'm just hesitant because the guitar is only worth maybe $300 in decent shape.

>>72204093
Just did this and it is definitely bulging a bit.
>>
>>72202790
ANSWER ME FAGGOTS. OR IS THIS AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF MY POWER?
>>
>>72204137
ok, if the top has lifted and bulged then it's a fairly big repair job. You need to remove the bridge and sand it back down. Measure the action at the 12th, decide how much lower it needs to be and sand half that amount off the bridge.

Might want to hand that to an experienced luthier but it would probably cost more than the guitar is worth.
>>
>>72204180
Actually I'm aware of how to get the bridge off and on. Just haven't done it before. It would be a process but I think I could do that myself.

I'll get a quote and do some research before I decide what to do. Thank you for helping diagnose my problem!
>>
>>72204247
If you can possibly do it just by taking the saddle down then do that, getting the bridge glued back flat and in secure contact with the top takes a lot of patient work.
>>
>>72204275
Unfortunately I can only get it down about 1mm by sanding the saddle. I won't be able to cheat this one.
>>
>>72204275
Also, this is a fairly common problem with older acoustics. Over 40 or 50 years the tension of the strings inevitably pulls the top out of shape and the action creeps higher and higher until the guitar becomes unplayable. It's something to check on any old acoustic guitar before you spend money on it.
>>
>>72204387
Good to know for the future. Luckily, this guitar was my dad's so I didn't spend a dime on it.

He picked it up when he was stationed in japan sometime in the early 70's. It would just be super cool if I could get it playing again. This was the first guitar I ever touched and played!
>>
>>72204338
Some day I want to try resetting a neck. Could be a cool project.

A noisegate. A Boss NS-2 pedal will work for that. When you say you're trying to record, do you mean like with a DAW? Then you can just run a noisegate plugin that can take care of that for you. Or edit out all the in-between hiss by hand, but that's tedious

Acoustic guitar is even easier. You don't adjust bridge height. Other than that, it's really exactly the same as described.
>>
>>72207949
I dunno, man. You can't compensate for bridge lift just by adjusting the truss rod. Neck relief has little effect on the upper frets. I dunno if you failed to paste your instructions, but I don't see what you're referring to.
>>

Are people really this picky on scale length? The only guitar that it matters on are bass guitars because it's such a drastic change between 30-32-34 inches, if anything fretboard radius is more important

Don't know why it didn't post. Trying again.

1. Set your guitar up before you do anything. This includes adjusting bridge height, tentioning neck so that it's mostly level, etc. This won't solve anything. You'll still have the same problems. It gets you to a known working point.

2. Completely detention the neck. Massage along the length, back and forth, to relieve residual stresses in the wood.

3. Add a little tension back into the neck with the truss rod. Tighten strings and try to get in tune. Strings will buzz at some point. In general, if you pick from the nut to the bridge and it buzzes until the 5th or7th fret, it needs more tension in the truss rod. If it's fine, then buzzes, then is fine again, it usually needs some truss rod relief.

4. Adjust accordingly until there's no buzz and good action.

5. Electrics may need additional bridge adjustments, but this is additive to the method.

I've set up many guitars, both acoustic and electric this way.
>>
>>72207774

Solid build quality and an electronics swap is a super easy upgrade.

Not a fan of the gloss neck, personally, but it's a non-issue for most.

I have a VM P bass 5 String, and my only complaint was the shitty Fender strings that came stock
>>
>>72208181
We were talking about resetting the neck though, not a basic setup. Like removing it from the body, stripping the residual glue, cleaning the surfaces, and replacing it better than it was before.

Does that guitar have a lot of neck whip, or is it stable? If it's stable, you can just level it and replace the pickups. It can be hard to find a guitar with perfect frets for under $300, but that's more than a level, setup, and set of pickups will cost you.

Just some food for thought, most people just don't want a guitar that "feels cheap" anyway.

MIJ, 1982-1984
>>
>>72209914
Then that is one very fine guitar indeed. My first ever Strat was a 1986 MIJ Squier E-series, gave it away to my brother like a fucking moron just before the prices started to rocket.

You'll find the pickups are a bit raspy, the MIJs from the 1980s all have bar magnets underneath and really don't sound that great. Plus it's a tight radius on the fingerboard and the frets are tiny, if you can cope with vintage feel necks then it's a superb guitar, just stick better pickups in if it's a keeper.
>>
>>72209914
I can see from here that the intonation is fucked on that guitar, there's no way on earth that'll play in tune up the neck
>>
>>72209076
I'm not that educated on guitars, but I know I need to adjust the neck so that the high e string doesn't buzz. Rest of the guitar works fine, but needs a string upgrade I think
>>
>>72209408
There's a lot that can be wrong, but a lot that can be fixed. If you know what you're getting into, and know what issues are going to be too hard or expensive to fix, getting a shitplank to fix up can be fun. The reason people shill for rondo music here is because the number of things necessary to fix is pretty small, and no-gos like misaligned strings can be returned and refunded.

I'm a bit of a shitplank enthusiast, but there are definitely times that a shitplank is not worth the effort unless you solely want to enjoy the work involved. If you're looking at a shitplank not as a fun project, but as a budget workhorse, you need to be more selective. Personally, my general checklist includes a properly aligned sturdy neck, steel hardware, looks I enjoy, and a functional truss rod. Beyond that, I'm looking to see it meets my preferences for neck profile and fretboard radius, balance, and upper fret access.

I'd say if you meet those criteria you only need to put in a couple hours of work to get it to play and sound exactly the way you want. One of the most time consuming things you can do is refinish, but it can be worth it if that's what it takes to have your dream guitar.

if only one string is buzzing, you don't need to adjust the neck, you need to adjust the high e string saddle. Raise it until the buzz is reasonable, then set the intonation.

One more thing with MIJ Fenders, they are a bitch to fit replacement parts on. US pickguards don't line up properly, you have to drill new holes, then a new switch because the MIJ ones use countersunk screws and metric threads. Pickup screws are countersunk too, that can be a real pain in the dick.

i took inspiration for the shape from one of allan holdsworth's guitars. built by canton guitars i think. pic related. i also wanted a ledge so it sit on my lap nicely which came out looking a bit strandberg ish, another guitar i love the look of.

The build is completely built by me besides the fretboard which i ordered pre cut.

i would have made it headless if i knew how. Maybe the next one will be.

>>
>>72210585

>>
>>72210788
Shaping the neck was just alot of sanding.

the whole project was kind of a leap of faith, i dont have much experience in wood working and i had to borrow friends bandsaws for all the big cuts. its 90% hand tools, learning how to chisel, buying drill bits, taking your time, sanding, and more sanding.

for me the most stressful part was bridge location and drilling the string ferrels. i felt like if i had gotten those wrong i would really be in trouble so i just made sure to take my time and try to get the measurements right

if i was to do another one it would probably take half the time this one took. and ill document my work to share with anyone here thats interested

i highly reccomend trying it yourself, it was extremely rewarding to play something you built.
>>
>>72210835
What parts were chiseled? The neck pocket and roughing out the neck? Did you use a router for the truss rod channel?
>>
>>72210890
the parts chiseled were the pickup and body cavity. the truss rod channel was the only part routed out. i didnt have a guide for the cavities otherwise i would have tried it.

and its a neckthrough so there is no neck pocket.
>>
>>72210917
I'm going to be cutting a pickup cavity soon. This will be exposed, no pickup ring or pick guard, so I think what I'll do is make a guide first with files, then use the router with that. Of course, I could also try chiselling, but I'm worried it won't be neat. Were you able to make things neat with the chisel? Also, what body cavity?

>3 single coils

>Using a DS-1 for distortion

The DS-1 has never sounded good by itself ever. Blending two different types maybe, but absolutely never by itself. Sounds like cracked glass solo. The single coils aren't helping anything either, but it shouldn't make that big of a difference.

Depends on your amp as well, solid state stuff usually has some OKish distortion on the head, if it's some tube amp throw an OD in front (OD-1, Bad Monkey, Tube Screamer, etc).

There are as many flavors of distortion as there are grains of dirt in the world. Kinda hard to know what you want.
>>
>>72212161
I'll recommend what I always recommend for someone that does not have one currently. JAZZ BASS. It doesn't have to be a jazz bass, just 2 passive coil j-pickups. They can get literally any sound, from light and spunky to deep and thick.

That amp has a good gain channelish. Humbuckers are probably what you are looking for after listening to that clip, but I'd recommend trying some guitars that have humbuckers at the bridge in store first. I know modding a S/S/S into an H/S/S (H at the bridge) shouldn't be expensive at all, and you don't have to go crazy with the pickup, I bet they have some spares laying around.

There's a few ancient and really rare Rickenbackers with a lever to drop 6 strings out of playing position but they're rare as rocking horse shit and not very good guitars anyway.

What you need is a Boss GP-10 and a hexaphonic pickup, 12-string simulator with programmable poly pitch shift. Press a pedal, get a 12-string sound an an alt tuning without touching a tuning machine.

They look good and I'm not likely to get my eye poked out yet I hate stringing them because I have to buy 2 packs of strings in case I screw one of them up.

Roalnd GK hex pickup

for this

I don't use that add-on pickup any more, I've got a Fender GC-1 Strat with the Roland stuff built in

It sounds ok. Think of it as the non-boutique modelling solution.
>>
>>72214355
COSM is what generates the Boss GT-100 sounds, pretty acceptable amp modelling I guess
>>
since I might get a faster answer here rather than going to /wsr/, can anyone help me figure out the damn power chords for this song? Been trying for a while, so far I have A# and D#. I think their guitars are tuned a half step higher possibly.

Telecasters are the primordial electric guitar - they still rule.
>>
>>72214455
They're the same people that don't mic cabs or own studios.
>>
>>72214556
The children here think that high gain equals a powerful guitar sound, not understanding dynamic range compression. A clean Tele has a huge dynamic range compared to a havily distorted humbucker, dynamic range in a recording sounds a lot more powerful than a constant compressed volume. Your ear rapidly adjusts to a compressed level and it gets boring very quickly without dynamics.
>>
>>72214679
>humbuckers can only be played with distortion while single coils can only be played clean
>>
Pretty sure this Skiba's newfound exposure in Blink jacked up the prices on Japanese Jaguar Specials. Bought mine for 400 with hardshell case right before he joined, now they're going online for closer to 300-600 more.

Anyone know if building through warmoth is a viable option? I'll have to drill out the holes for the bridge post cause they don't offer TOM style bridges for that body.

>tfw I just want a TOM jag with humbuckers
>tfw I hate Matt Skiba now.
>>
>>72215232
Adding to this quick, I'd rather not get a blacktop or similar because they usually lack the Jag control scheme.
>>
>>72215232
I've built aFender/Warmoth Telecaster. The Warmoth neck is pretty nicely made, compound radius, big stainless steel frets. I hate the side adjusting truss rod mechanism though, don't see the need for it and apparently if you unscrew those too far then it falls apart internally and there's just no way to reassemble it without pulling the neck to pieces.
>>
Do you guys stretch after you play? I keep seeing conflicting information. Some say you need to stretch to avoid carpel tunnel and shit, but some say it does more harm than good.
>>
>>72215414
no
>>
>>72215414
I usually stretch before I play. My wrist used to hurt after I played too strenuously but now I never have that issue as long as I stretch first. Would definitely recommend.

I was thinking of getting a warmoth replacement neck for my current Jag, so that's some useful info to keep in mind. Thanks Anon.

Also, assuming you're doing the sensible thing and ordering rosewood, go for the dark Indian rosewood option. Doesn't add a lot to the cost but it looks ten times better than most rosewood boards.

Do you find yourself shifting your grip on the pick to find the most effortless way to hold it when you're practicing a particular thing?
>>
>>72216226
I do shift my grip a lot, but not really intentionally or purposefully.
>>
>>72214455
it's mostly advertisment, its price and its status in the community
honestly, I've never tried out an Axe FX unit
>>
>>72216355
Take this for what it's worth because I read it in a youtube comment.

Someone was talking about how expensive Strymon pedals are, and said if you're going to buy several of them you might as well get an Axe-Fx because they use the same technology.
>>
>>72216226
i used to, not anymore.
it's not something i particuarly tried to fix though, actually maybe i still do it but i don't even realize
>>
>>72216426
Sounds like bullshit, all companies that produce DSP effects guard their tech very closely. If AxeFX licenses Strymon then they'd write it in big letters all over the thing
