hey senpaitachi ive been workin on this for the past couple days on and off
https://clyp.it/wkv20ic0

and i just noticed while exporting i keep getting these weird lawn-mower like artifacts that become increasingly loud as they go on. sometimes they dont last very long and sometimes they. there's one at 1:32 and one at 1:42. I'm pretty sure it's due to ValhallaShimmer. Does anyone have any idea how to avoid this? It occurs sometimes during playback within my DAW but not everytime and not in the same place. Is it just my computer being too shit?

any other advice appreciated ¦3

First of all, can I have custom presets folder Xfer Serum?

Second question is complicated. I wanted to write preset creator name and preset name (Serum), but every time I try to type letters like q,w,e,r,t,y,u,i,o,p or so it plays a note and doesn't write anything. How do I fix this? I have FL Studio 12.

I'm not sure what sort of answer you want. Your question is far too broad. If you want to do it properly you'll have to learn music theory, subtractive synthesis, and mixing. If you want to cheat like vaporwave retards just download a load of 80s music, sample insultingly large chunks of it slowed down, and put a shit beat behind it.

One of the devs is too busy with other projects and the last update had been since end 2015 I think. There hasn't been any news about upcoming updates or whatever.

Really fucking sucks because I love music trackers and renoise has lots of features that can still make it match up to modern daws. Right now it's still lacking some features like side chaining, luckily the signal follower trick works but it doesn't sound exactly as I want it to be.
>>
>>72088552
Yeah for mixing its not the best. I rewire into Ableton to do that stuff. For everything else though its almost perfect. Pretty sure you aren't going to find a more efficient method of programming musical information than a tracker.

Trying to do intricate drum programming or automation in a traditional DAW is an exercise in frustration.

Tell me about it. All I've got to work with is a secondhand copy of Audition 3.0
>>
>>72088651
how are trackers any more efficient than a regular daw? isn't it just a different view (scrolling numbers vs scrolling notes or automation points) for what is essentially the same process?
>>
>>72089854
Because what he posted is clearly based on 80s sounds and all classic 80s analog synths were subtractive, as are the majority of VSTs.

>>72090033
Program a normal drum beat for whatever style of music it is you are doing, with just one kick, snare, and hat sound each. Then go through and change the instrument values so you are switching hits, don't do it randomly though, do it in rhythmic patterns. Use stuff like clicks and beeps as well as normal hits and use the fade out function in Renoise's wave editor to get tighter decay on the hits.

Get a load of drum breaks and sample the hat/ghost snare/hat/ghost snare parts and layer them in. Delete hits so most of the time you only have one playing on any given timestep (i.e. linear drumming).

Use the Rxy command to do little fills and glitchy bits, Bxx and Uxx/Dxx also useful. Turn on/off VST devices using X000/X001.

Once you have a decent pattern, copy it a few times and make variants.
>>
https://clyp.it/trygnqi1

Been working on this track for a while, and I'm almost finished. Any thoughts? I'm really happy with the beat and hte overall sound quality
>>
>>72090342
The input system mainly. You want to input a note in Ableton: double click on a grid and then drag/move to its desired position and length, in Renoise: type two characters.

Changing velocity: fiddle about dragging little bars vs type two characters.
Going off grid for swing: turn grid off, zoom in, drag to place vs type two characters.
Cutting up breaks/samples: selecting, copying, dragging vs type three characters.

Similarly with pitch bend, aftertouch, panning and so on. Also doing things like hit/synth switching in a normal DAW is a pain in the arse, having to have one track per instrument is dumb.

>>72090838
Volcas are great starter synths, so if you're new to synth stuff I'd say try it out, they're loads of fun. I've got a volca beat and I love the little guy.

Bleep Labs makes some super small analogue synths that are deffo affordable. My nebulophone isn't the most practical thing in the world, but it does make some super fat sounds.
>>
>>72091652
Can you be more specific?
>>
>>72091673
i got the volca bass, is great, and im eyeing this one cause its kind of cheap but it looks more complex than the other volcas, the sample one would be my second choice, (i dunno if you can load your own samples but i guess so)

i don't have a lot of money though, and if i don't go for this one i would go for another one in a similar range, but i dont know if they are really worth it in quality-price as the volca series

>>
>>72091700

>>
>>72091751
You want it as low as it can go without introducing audio dropouts/crackling.

512 samples is ~11ms so if the latency sounds much longer than that, there's something else going on.
>>
>>72091791
What bothers me most is that I can hear what I am speaking into the mic but with a slight delay. So this leads me to stumble on my own words. I also tried a lot of stuff to mute this but it seems like I can not record AND have the channel muted.
>>
>>72091827
>What bothers me most is that I can hear what I am speaking into the mic but with a slight delay
yep thats why you shouldn't monitor it

drop the volume or route it to another audio channel and drop the volume of the second one if volume of the recording channel affects the recording volume
>>
>>72091745
Not really. Certainly not well. You could try converting from L/R to mid/side and then lowering the volume on the side channel as reverb is often quite stereo rich, but it will be artifacty as fuck if it even works at all.
>>
>>72091745
acon digital deverberate
>>
>>72091876
When I drop the volume the recorded part is of that volume.

>or route it to another audio channel
Wait, what?
>>
>>72091969
I dunno if F L can, but it should, look for it "route audio to other channels",

Basically the trick would be you send the audio to another channel so you can keep the recording volume in the level you want, but before reaching the master and going to your monitors/headphones your audio travels to a secondary channel in which you drop the volume and this doesn't affect hte volume you are recording at, but does not send the audio to the mas ter therefore you don't hear it, therefore you don't stumble

Look at your device status panel - FL Studio ASIO is adding another 68 milliseconds of latency to your signal chain.

If your USB mic has an ASIO driver listed on the manufacturer's website, install it and use that instead of FL Studio ASIO, if not then use ASIO4All (also built into recent FL Studio versions).

FL Studio ASIO is a last resort and is shite at reducing latency.
>>
>>72092513
Oh, yes, of course. I used it with ASIO 4 All and it had the problem. I will look up to see if there's an ASIO driver for the microphone.

Any way to fix this?
>>
>>72092677
I always thought this was more of a feature than a bug.
>>
>>72092677
I think it's supposed to do that
>>
>>72092677

ASIO4All (like native ASIO drivers) bypass your PC's audio mixer layer(s) to allow the application using ASIO to communicate directly with your audio device with lower latency - while ASIO is active it has exclusive control over your device so the standard Windows mixer is locked out.

It's by design that it does this - if ASIO plugged into the Windows mixer like all other applications do then you'd be able to play sound from all of your other applications but at that point ASIO would be slowed down by the very thing it was designed to bypass.

Think of it as a way of making you concentrate on making your music.

you've gone for such a nice wide sound on the swirly vocals and guitars and such that it seems a shame to have these swampy monophonic drums sounding all sad in the center of the mix. They stick out a lot.

Also the guitar recording could be a bit tighter (and brightened up EQ wise) I'm basically never a fan of panned bass guitar, that one should be siting more in the center of the mix, it's also so quiet you barely hear it and it could be a lot louder without interrupting anything else in the mix.

also I'm sure you already know the vocal harmonies are often not perfectly pitched.

not that there's anything wrong with that

>>72114545
This actually is slowed down, from 155 to 150.

>>72115426
this comes up a lot, eurobeat low end can actually be surprisingly thin sometimes and I like to keep the bass end nice and light so I can fill the limiter up with more treble. (I used to do an eq cut on the master actually). If you use a kick that has too much booty on a eurobeat track with a lot of fast kick rolls and it shit it gets ugly fast.

In this case I definitely went a bit thin so I've thiccened it up and it's sounding a bit nicer.

I'll upload another clyp once I've written a bit more.

Does anyone here actually do music for realz, like DJ your own music or get shit released on a label or anything?
>>
>>72097776
I dunno if you gonna read this, but you are thinking wrong

Starting a song on a daw is a daunting thing cause you have to go through maaaany stages before you finish it

1-First you gotta play around till you find something you like
2-Then you gotta turn it into a structured song
3-Then you gotta fill all the other instruments
4-Then you gotta sound design each instrument
5-Then you gotta finish the arrangement with flowers and all
6-Then you gotta produce it
7-Then you gotta mix it
8-Then you gotta master it

IMO you should divide your time in a disciplined fashion, your goal is to go from step 1 to 7, the 8th is more difficult and nobody is expecting you to go that far, you can use LANDR or learn the basics, but theres an entire profession for just that

You say you can do 30sec loops, im supposing with every instrument, so you are at the end of 3rd step, entering the 4th/5th. now you gotta learn 1 - how to make variations, 2- how to make switches, 3 - how to keep it entertaining. Also sound design.

Listen to a lot of techno, they are the masters of turning a 4bar loop into a full song, pay attention to how they keep the interest and focus of the listener in the track.

When you start learning that you kind of will be at the doors of production, you just gotta apply the same ideas to the full length of the track.

Then comes mixing, that is kind of similar but more based on volume automation and sends automation play.

I've had vinyl and digital releases on a handful of labels under different monikers. This was 10 years ago. Drum n Bass and Dubstep. Never made any money at it other than DJing. Made some money writing music for commercials but not enough to live off of.

I just got older, and realized the dream wasn't going to pan out.

I still write and spin records, just don't share it any more.

also, nice dubs
>>
>>72116534
Um yeah I guess but I make weird music that would never have any kind of mainstream appeal. >>
>>72116583
Cool man. Did you feel like you were making music to fit a certain set of expectations?
>>
>>72116623
yes and no. the genres are very formulaic to be DJ friendly. I always wrote other, weird stuff, but none of that I ever pushed to be signed.

I had a younger friend, and at the time I thought I was doing him a favor by telling him to quit music and focus on life since it didn't work for me. I really had his best interest in heart at the time, but I crushed him. Looking back its one of my biggest regrets.

He wasn't particularly fantastic but it wasn't my place to tell him that. He still hasn't returned to writing music and I always wonder what he might have written if I hadn't ruined it.

It's not electronic, but I did make it in FL, so...
Any suggestions? It's not really done, just a few parts of the song strung together.
>>
>>72116694
True, I come from a family of musicians, my dad more or less 'made it' in that he played in touring bands for years, had a couple of TV appearances and got a bit of radio airplay, now he's poor as fuck playing in covers bands at nearly 70 years of age. My brother is a pretty talented guitarist and songwriter but he's been an alcohol his whole life so he never made anything of himself.

For that reason I never though of music as something anyone should seriously pursue, I have put so much time and effort into it and am pretty talented in a number of ways but I can't take it seriously as a career path.

Do you regret that the nature of the scene is that your weird stuff would never get anywhere but the more genre-friendly stuff got signed?
That is a real problem I have with electronic music.

>>72116726
There is literally no electronic music scene at all where I live, let alone a weird experimental underground electronic music scene. Also see above for my attitude on living off music.
>>
>>72105845
if this is you:
>EDM Aphex Twin or Tiesto or Martin Garrix style, or if I should try to make Tycho or sufjan Steven type stuff?
then you are fucking far, far, far away from considering making even a little bit of money, let alone a living, off of music.
>>
What do y'all think of logic?
>>
>>72116882
I've been booked to play weird stuff before, usually in a chill room, or art show setting. But I like both the weird and the genre friendly stufff, so no regrets there.

If you are working on some seriously weird shit, please continue. Every few years someone would come along and there shit was so alien, but so good that it ended up changing the genre as a whole or creating its own sub-genre. Think Ed Rush and Optical's Wormhole album.

desu, most, MOST successful electronic artists aren't signed to a label. Instead they create and run their own labels. Usually at a monetary loss, but for love of the music. At least at first.
>>
>>72116974
>Think Ed Rush and Optical's Wormhole album
I haven't heard this before, just listening now. is this what launched what people call neuro now?

I honestly can't imagine anyone liking what I do on a large scale but I'm going to keep doing what I do regardless, maybe one day someone will decide it is some revolutionary shit but I'm not holding my breath.
>>
>>72116597

>>
>>72117083
yeah, very few people were doing that at the time. shit, it was still referrd to as jungle music then for the most part. They really blew shit up as far as tech-step /. nuerofunk is considered. I still listen to this album a few times a year. Maybe its nostalgia, but i think it holds up as a groundbreaking release.
>>
>>72117117
neato, your beats always end up rock solid, wish you had more followers.

onto the feedback, I think the drums are a bit to clean and I think the beat needs to be slightly more sluggish to accompany the dreamy soundscape.
>>
>>72117159
In a way I would hate it if I had made some innovative and groundbreaking album then a whole bunch of other cunts tried to sound like it and made a more boring shitty version of what I had already done.

Do you know of anything from recent times that is breaking new ground in the same sort of way? I was really liking Carpenter Brut's stuff, a lot of people say its typical synthwave but he has a way of injecting a whole lot more life into the sound than anyone else I've heard. I'd fall asleep listening to most of those faggots trying too hard to sound like they are an 80s movie soundtrack.
>>
>>72116951
Logic is really good. It's one of the cheaper daws if you own a Mac and is worth it's price alone just for the native plugins. Alchemy is one hell of a synth
>>
>>72117201

And yeah, I was leaning that way. I'l have to revisit this tomorrow with fresh ears. Either that or get my taxes done.
>>
What do you think of fabfilter synths?
>>
>>72117233
I listen to a little bit of synthwave, but not enough to make a call.

I'm getting old and kind of stuck in my own world, so I am not a good judge of anything new outside of underground techno.

Whether you are looking for advice or not, here is some:

Just do you. But don't get lazy, always be learning about gear, software, synthesis, recording techniques, etc. Listen to lots of types of music. And most importantly know this:

You will never be discovered. If you want to be heard you will have to work. Not write great music, but work at finding ways to be successful. Start your own label. and network. knowing people is more important than how good a DJ or producer you are.

also, i'd like to listen to anything you've got if you'll share.

>>
>>72117397

Again, I'm way too old and out of the loop to even guess at what genre these might be. THe're different, but not genre-bending imho.

I'd like to hear the songs redone and each sound beefed up, fattened a little more. More attention to the mix and the sounds than the composition. take it for what its worth (just my opinion)

Sounds like you listened to too much Dream Theater. The composition is interesting but there isn't really much to latch on to so it ends up sounding like a bit of a mess of different melodies and rhythms.

If you compare it to something like this there is a lot going on here too but there are always little bits that are easy to follow, I feel like your song needs more stuff like that instead of just being all over the show the whole time.

nothing against you or your track, but I cant get into mathy prog music, I want to feel and vibe with the music I'm listening to, not having to run excell just to figure out when I'm supposed to tap my foot to the beat.

Sounds good though, maybe bring the cymbals more forward to get a bit more energy, just roll a slight off the top if you do that as they are pretty bright allready.
>>
>>72117649
You are right that it is bland, I just can't pinpoint what it is. Is it missing dynamic? Maybe I'm relying too much on synths/MIDI for this track and thus loosing the 'organic' feel. For my past release I only used really quiet synths in the background to create more of a "wall of sound" and had the guitars in the front. And those recordings do sound more 'exciting'.

>>72117732
I've actually been listening to too much Animals as Leaders but Acid Rain is my favorite LTE track! I can see what you mean though, each section has a hook in the midst of the craziness, while my track doesn't really.
I was initially going for a more technical track as I've never made one before and my previous release was more focused on musicality Though I don't want to make something that's flashy but rapes your soul in the process.

Thanks for the feedback y'all

>>

this.
it sounds like the composition and guitar are your favorite parts. best advice is to find or make a band of other musicians to play with.
>>
>>72117908
to chip in as another anon here.

Listen to what the traditional jazz guys did, they established a theme very early on where most of the guys where playing, then they went off on a tangent, going through each instrument with solo parts, but they always ended back on the theme again, anchoring it when it started to get a bit out there.

maybe you want to cresendo your compositional progy'nes, start off easy after the theme, then it builds and builds and gets harder to keep track off untill it almost boils over and at that moment you land back on the theme.

buildup and release.

REEEEEEEEEEEEE WHAT THE FUCK I HAD A COMPLETELY ORIGINAL SONG THAT SOUNDED AMAZING IN MY DREAMS BEFORE I WOKE UP.

Why the fuck can't i think of this amazing music while i'm awake? I'm barely creative outside the times i get completely random inspiration(like could be #1 on the radio type shit) anyone got any tips on how to reliably get inspiration and create ideas whilst awake?
>>
>>72118348
Get high
Or get sleep deprived like many artists.
Or sleep with a recorder, as soon as you get a melody wake up, hum it in and go back to bed
>>
>>72118478
>>72118348
Yeah, I'm always the most creative at like 3 in the morning. I would start with that before the drug route.
>>
>>72109422
fire! how long you been making beats?
>>
>>72114318
Instruments. I never found a sample which can be alone as a lead, even it is some of the higher quality ones, like those from Omnisphere. I layered like 5 different guitars and only now it feels good and full.

What's the best way to learn structure? Should one just decide on a genre and analyze the fuck out of it?

They both sound correct. Greg Kurstin produced this and sometimes in pop songs, the way the chord progression played deviates in the slightest of ways to vary it up as the song goes on.

these variations are so slight and subtle that they aren't recognizable as new chords or new sections but just slightly altered voicings of the material the listener is familiar with.
>>
>>72120621
Make a playlist of your favorite tracks, set it to random and then do a different once each day.

Start with the marco (instrumentation, sections, key, chord-progs and if the prog changes in different sections) then try your hand at the micro (how do they transition between sections? what is the relationship between the text and the music?)
>>
>>72121300

Thanks for the advice, I'll try to do just that. I am pretty new, so I guess I'll be spending months on just one track as I the music theory that will allow me to even begin to understand what's happening on the song.

Should I learn notation and transcription first?

what do you guys think of Behringer model D?

my thought is minimoog is known for its very useable filter, but I heard it is very hard to copy or clone one. What do you think?

Yo. You clearly have a good notion of where to put silence and rests, but I'd argue that the way you attack immediately after a rest lacks ambition (which I know is a hell of a statement given how your track sounds. The problem is kinda that the lead doesn't take any breaks so there's no clear way to tell that a new part is happening. This leads to it sounding monotonous given how repetitive the first lead chunk is (look at the lead in isolation).

Another thing you could look at to improve your sound (not that it's bad, perhaps improve is a strong word, maybe diversify?), is more usage of contrary motion (lead instrument goes up, bass goes down, synth expands).

I don't know if any of that is helpful, it's 1AM where I am and I have a 50 word essay due tomorrow. Please listen to my track that I stayed up all night making instead of doing my work, I feel like we may go about things in similar manners.

not him but wheneverI switch to asio4all FL crashes for me. I already tried reinstalling asio drivers and it worked for maybe 2 boot ups. anyone else have this problem?
>>
I perfected my skill of not finishing anything so much that when I make some decent sound, I record half a minute of music and immediately go to the next idea without even looking back. I got so used to that now, that I don't even think about how would I develop what I already have, fuck.
>>
>>72122296
I perfected my skills of procrastinating and postponing everything. Haven't updated my sc a few years. I know this sucks but I find myself quite happy listening to a lot of music than actually producing anything.
>>
>>72122296
>>72122502
Don't ever finish anything. If you leave something half finished then you know it had potential to be something good because you are a uniquely talented and special individual, if only you could focus your skills enough for the world to see how amazing you are.

If you actually finish it then it never works out as good as you thought it should, then you realize that you are just another worthless piece of trash and no one will ever give a shit about you or anything you do.

Ignorance is bliss lads.
>>
>>72123029
I hope you're being ironic about this.

On the other hand, there are a a lot of music that feels unfinished on purpose which I happen to like a lot, and also there is deconstructed stuff that doesn't follow the guide lines and market imposed regulations. Each time I think about opening a DAW I can't help but feel that I'm being overwhelmed by the grid, the step sequencers and the chain of plug-ins I'm supposed to use in the process, I know it's just me but this part of routine is an instant turn off. And actually I'm not against repetition in music at all.
>>
>>72123029
But you see, the problem with me is that I start hating my project every single time at some point. I almost finished a few of the songs, but I just got sick of them somewhere in the mixing stage and stopped working on them.

And no matter how much praise I get from here every time - I will still hate it with passion. I don't know what to do.
>>
>>72117496
You soundlike you are as old as me. I bought my first sampler in 97 in the hope of making jungle, but ended up being more interested in just fucking about with making strange noises with my sampler and never really bothered to make any jungle tracks...pretty much still doing the same now, sometimes I'll spend a weekend using samples I've made and create a 2 bar loop, then delete all my samples and start again.
What sort of underground techno do you listen to? I'm kinda out of the loop now too and hardly ever listen to any new stuff.
>>
>>72123283
You just gotta push through it and focus on the small details of things you need to get right, I hate everything I have ever done and hate myself for being so stupid as to waste so much time making shit music that no one will ever like, but music is the only thing I know and the only thing I love and I am driven by an endless desire to do something that I feel represents me and my take on what music can be.

I fail every time but every day I get closer, it's an unreachable goal and I will die unfulfilled but what can you do, this is the life I chose and this is what life chose for me in equal parts so I just keep making shitty tunes.

Is using Omnisphere for synthesis instead of Sylenth/Diva/Serum a bad choice?

It's p good. I remember myself listening to a lot of such stuff back in 2010-11. It's kind of correlate with what you said earlier about the "hopelessness of musical devotion".

I feel like the modulations on the bass should be more rhythmic, it sort of contrasts the beat too much and ruins the flow. A lot of it would be as simple as dragging the track back a few ms so the wah parts sit on the beat.

Breddy gud DnB tho from someone who is a casual DnB fan and knows almost nothing about the genre.

fuck you i wont do what you tell me

but really it was an experiment in different mixing techniques much less about composition

safe though

Thread's nearly dead but can anyone think of a VST that'd be good for recreating the 50s-Disney-movie style choir sound? That super reverby falsetto sound like in Motion Picture Soundtrack. I'm in love with it and would like you use it
