/daily/ Rescue edition. Time to start making some changes around here. Pick something interesting for the listenalong, filter the annoying trips, etc.

The point of these threads is to critically analyse musical traditions from all over the world, including the western pop canon, and perform discourse on the topic. This discourse shapes what is allowed to be discussed and who is allowed to take part. As a shibboleth against lowbrows, the highest caliber of dank memes is used as communication. By doing this, we can create a utopia for true music lovers and colonise the planet, solar system, and galaxy. Every single utterance here is broadcast wirelessly, somewhere, some time, and will as such be launched into the infinity of thoughts.

Phil Elverum was pretty incredible for just a dude and his guitar. I thought his new album was just alright, but attaching a face to the words added a whole new dimension to the songs.

He opened and closed with two new songs: "Distortion" and "TinTin in Tibet" which both fit in with the new set of songs quite well. My only complaint is that he JUST played those two new songs + his new album all the way through. In order. With nothing else in between.

I understand you've been doing this thing for two decades now and you don't have any other band members/instruments, but c'mon dude. You're not gonna do anything else? No Headless Horseman? No I Felt Your Shape? No acoustic cover of The Moon? I would've died to hear any of these paid live.

Regardless, I would highly rec seeing Phil live if you even slightly enjoyed the album if you get the chance. In the middle of his new song "Distortion" he makes a pretty funny joke about being a "Dead Beat Dad" which got a lot of laughs, plus after the song "Chasm" he paused for a bit and after thanking everyone he said "Yeah...so, this is pretty fucked up right? Sorry about that." which was pretty hilarious. So don't be worried about it being an hour of "boo hoo muh wife died ;__;".

Mance Lipscomb - Texas Sharecropper & Songster (1960)
>Delta Blues

Pretty middle-of-the road bluesman. Good at everything (fingerpicking, songwriting, slide, voice) but not terribly unique or original at any of them. Doesn't quite hit that raw emotion like many of his contemporaries, but still has that warm gentle feeling and genuine musical conveyance. Good, but does nothing to elevate him ahead of the pack in my eyes.

>noise pop

I was pretty much bound to love this since it's noise pop with female/male dueting and spacey songwriting. I would've liked them to push the boundaries a bit more but it's very good as it is, the longest tracks pass by without getting too tedious and even if the start is stronger than the end it is an overall pleasing experience.

>Ensemble Georgika - Music from Georgia Vol. 1

Georgia's interesting culture gets ignored too much in my opinion; despite the longstanding traditions and unique development leading to a one-of-a-kind culture, there doesn't seem to be much international interest in it at all beyond making jokes about it having the same name as a redneck state.

This release documents, for the most part, polyphonic chants, mostly without any sort of instrumental accompaniment - though there are some tracks with traditional stringed instruments, and there are a couple instrumental tracks featuring other instruments like flutes. It's not as instantly jaw dropping as the other polyphonic chant albums you may know like Le mystère des voix bulgares, but this compilation has some of the most beautiful ancient music out there. It does suffer from some issues that folk comps like this often have - namely, it seems the tracks thrown on this was done at random, so the quality control is lacking. I also wish there was a bit more in the way of instrumental sections, as they definitely helped break the monotony, and I think it would be better with more church songs as opposed to work songs.

>Leo Soileau - The Early Recordings
>Cajun

I'm not super familiar on pure Cajun music, but from a bit of research I believe Soileau was the second practitioner of it to ever be recorded, and this album encompasses his earliest work.

The highlights of these recordings is certainly the fiddling; the singing here is an acquired taste, and the other instruments that are sometimes present are nowhere near as fun to listen to (the accordion is especially disappointing to me, since I am a big fan of that instrument). Most of these tracks are very much the same in terms of formula: fiddle intro, some other instrument comes in, everyone stops playing for some singing to start, and then the instruments start. And, of course, these are some very old recordings, so it has a lot of quirks that old recordings have: constantly hiss, distorted vocals, instruments often drowning each other, etc. I personally think this gives the recordings a bit of character, but this will turn people off if they have little tolerance for extremely raw sound.

I appreciate this from a historical standpoint, but I unfortunately did not really enjoy this *that* much. Some of these tracks are very nice on their own, but as a whole this is a bit much for me, and I say that as someone who generally enjoys music descended from more traditional Cajun stuff. However, if you have a standing interest in early recordings of Southern music, you can't go wrong with this.

I'm a music conservatory graduate. I spent years analyzing music for grades, so when I come across something that's garbage, I know. Beatles albums have the melodic complexity of a train horn (actually less; train horns often are tuned to a tritone, which seem to be absent in their music) and the lyrical complexity barely goes beyond a 3rd grade vocabulary. Not only is this music intended for ignorant audiences, it's intended to provoke ignorant young people into becoming hippies in order to fill the marijuana shops with costumers in the US. How's that for an unpopular opinion?
>>
>>71996968
okay

okay

Pet Sounds and Smile beat out every Beatles album by a long shot, but in general I'd agree with this. The Beatles don't really have more than a handful of good albums either though, which begin with Rubber Soul and end with Abbey Road exclusively with a few shit ones in between there

who? XL "Freshmen" are usually two years too late anyways, just like the grammys pretending Chance the Rapper was a "new artist" lmao.

Tusk is okay but really they don't have much else other than that.

I'm too tired to have many hot takes right now, but the best I can come up with is that Fugazi maybe has an album full of good songs and otherwise stink and that pretty much every OG punk band is garbage (clash/sex pistols-era).

>>71997160

literally which beatles album is better than smile sessions? Genuinely curious. (not the Brian Wilson or Smiley Smile)

Let it Be and MMT are overrated crocks

Abbey Road has five or six whatever songs

The White Album, while having probably the most Beatles songs I like, is in total one good album

The b-side of Sgt. Pepper is really lacking

Rubber Soul and Yesterday are both great, but have easily identifiable songs that don't really hold up

The only one I can think of that matches it is Revolver, which only really has two songs (Yellow Submarine and Doctor Robert) that I don't really care for.

Here Today is probably the only Pet Sounds song I really don't care for anyways. And every whatever track on Smile is like 50 seconds anyways.
>>
>>71997599
I would argue about SMiLE but that image made me laugh
>>
>>71997636
Barfy Beatles opinions. Abbey Road has to be the most consistent. It'll be hard to argue against Smile Sessions having zero so-so songs too.

I could go either way on this one though.
>>
>>71997699
Or the exact opposite of what I said about smile sessions. Whoops.
>>
>>71997699
well for me at least there are certain portions of smile that when I listen to just send me into pure musical ecstasy. I don't know what does it but perhaps it's just how densely layered and lush the compositions are. And despite the lyrics being mostly nonsensical, the way they're sung and especially how they are arranged lend to some intensely emotional moments that I haven't heard recreated on any other record.
Sure there are a few rough patches on Smile, in what is essentially a cut-and-paste of interchangeable musical vignettes there are bound to be a few, but those moments of bliss are hard to deny.
>>
>>71997636
White and Abbey are my personal favorites

>Abbey has five or six whatever songs

Only one that's even close to being whatever is Come Together, and that's still pretty damn good with that insanely catchy chorus

Plus it has the best thing the Beatles ever did, the B-Side suite.

White has 2 songs that I don't like and one of em is a minute long. The rest is wall to wall greatness.

On every Beach Boys album excluding maybe Pet Sounds has one song that is genuinely bad.

On the SMiLE Sessions, you have aimless crap like Love to Say Dada and Child is the Father of Man, and then you just have mediocre songs across the board with tracks like Vega-Tables, Do You Like Worms and the Four Elements.

I swear the only reason the SMiLE sessions are held in such high regard is because of the story behind it rather than the actual music.
>>
>>71997787
phone posting makes this look incoherent af

>>71997785
SMiLE does have some classic songs on there, but does it really make up for all the other trash The Beach Boys did?
>>
>>71997785
I really like it too. I'm tempted to skip around when I listen, especially knowing it's not *official*. I also get that from parts of Abbey Road. "Something", for example. People see these bands in pretty black-and-white terms, which I think sucks, since they both have undoubtedly great moments.
>>
>>71997817
>does it really make up for all the other trash The Beach Boys did?
I guess not? but why does that matter?
They made two albums that in my mind are some of the greatest music recorded.
The Beatles haven't come close to that for me, sure they've been more consistent, but what does that matter?
To me the Beatles never reached close to the levels that the Beach Boys did in terms of songwriting

Clay Rendering - Snowthorn
>...Darkwave? Shoegaze-ish??

This is a confusing album. It introduces itself with some movie soundtrack chords, and then it turns into gothic/noise pop, and the guitar is really irritating over the fake drums and presets and reverb-soaked piano chords, and the vocals are coming from across a gymnasium, and it's as messy as this run-on sentence. God, I really hate the piano on this album for some reason.

The songs don't really do anything with themselves, at least not without vocals (and even then, barely). It's the wrong mixture of elements, existing only in their separate flavorless cubes. A stack of chalk cubes, that you should not eat.

Gene Clark with The Gosdin Brothers - Gene Clark With The Gosdin Brothers (1967)
>country rock, folk rock, singer/songwriter

Much rootsier and more Byrds-esque than Clark's later solo works, but the added close harmony influence with the presence of the Gosdin Brothers makes this a somewhat unique album in Clark's discography. It's got it's shades of psychedelia on a couple tracks, but it's by and large the most explicitly country work to ever come out of the Byrds's camp, save for the lovely Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Some tracks may miss their mark, and it seems a bit thin compared to an album like No Other, but it's a damn good collection of country tunes nonetheless. Clark is a great vocalist, but he's an even better songwriter. He makes the most melancholic topics and melodies come off as really hopeful and ultra-pleasant, which is probably the best gift a country songwriter can have.

3.0-

The Feelies - In Between (2017)
>jangle pop

Save for the last track, you can't tell that this is the same band that made Crazy Rhythms. It's incredibly folky, with most tracks making heavy use of acoustic guitars and whispered vocals, and I'm not sure I really like this approach. It's done well enough, and it's certainly pretty, but incredibly samey, and totally lacking in the pure energy that makes this band great. The last track is the album's best track, a repetitive, groovy track worthy of standing tall with their earlier works, and a damn fine track in it's own right. That track makes me feel hopeful for this band's future, but I can't really say the same about the rest of the album.

Ken Nordine - Colors (1966)
>beat poetry, spoken word, jazz poetry

An entirely bizarre and incredibly cool little record. The twenty-four tracks on this record all tell the story of a personified color in a short little commercial-length fashion. The poems written and spoken by Nordine (who has a phenomenally resonant, deep voice) are endearing as hell and incredibly psychedelic and out-there. Every single color is personified perfectly, if the name of the color wasn't mentioned you could probably guess what Nordine is talking about, and the delivery is intense and perfect. The jazzy backings are a tad too slick on a couple tracks, and I'm not a fan of this approach at all, but a few tracks have instrumentals that match the intensity and absurdity of the poems, and these tracks are by far the best on the album. Damn cool record.

It's really funny how half of this album is some of the most gorgeously orchestrated dream pop I've ever heard and the other half is really banal lounge pastiches. "Falling" is a damn classic, and "Mysteries of Love" and "The World Spin" are equally as gorgeous and ethereal. What makes these tracks great despite being rather simple from a compositional standpoint is that Badalamenti's production is really full and dense, which gives a large amount of weight and power to these songs. Tracks like "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart" and "I Float Alone" lack this sense of weight, and what we're left with is some fairly lousy loungy jazz pop. Not terrible, but I just can't get into these tracks, especially since they look so bad compared to this album's best tracks. Don't get all the hype (probably because I've never seen Twin Peaks), but it's nice.

Agreeing on that Julee Cruise rating even if I've never seen Twin Peaks either, though it was more like a third of the album was good instead of half

Пaн Кiфapeд [Pan Kifared] - Live
>Chamber Folk

Oleksandr Kochanovsky is a pretty big name when it comes to independent Ukrainian music - he played piano in Cukor Bila Smert', discovered Ihor Cymbrows'kyj, helped with arrangements for Kazma Kazma and he was apparently involved with Kollezhskiy Asessor somehow. So I had some high expectations for this.

Live is a live album (duh) from Warsaw in 1992, and its sound reminds me a lot of the Cukor Bila Smert's compilation mixed with Kazma Kazma's last album (fitting, because I believe Kochanovsky was involved with both releases) - it's piano driven pieces with an acoustic guitar strumming alongside playing some minimalist chamber folk with a subtle ominous atmosphere. The piano is obviously the standout here; I'm not sure who the guitarist is, but he's not half as good. Some of these tracks feel like they're missing vocals or something too, but that might just be because I only heard him play alongside some fantastic vocalists before.

It's not super amazing and you can find the concept done better in the aforementioned releases, but I think this would work well as study music if you're interested. It's very pleasant, which was a bit weird to hear coming from Cukor Bila Smert'. And if you have a general interest in this scene, you'll appreciate this.

3

Listening to these Ukrainian releases makes me really wish they'd get some real reissues. Cukor Bila Smert's discography got re-released on a really rare CD a couple years ago, Kollezhskiy Asessor is still popular so they get reissues and Ihor Cymbrows'kyj miraculously got some of his tracks re-released on vinyl despite the fact he vanished from the face of the Earth. Evgen Hodosh said he wanted to make an effort to re-release everything but that has yet to happen (I'd kill a man for a high quality release of the first two Kazma Kazma albums or the Tovarisch album), so all we have is DJ Derbastler digitally releasing the old Yarn and Foa Hoka albums.

I live on a predominantly white college campus, so I get to hear people talk about him all the time.

I've heard some people say it correctly, but a lot of people say "ex-ex-ex-tent-ay-shun" or some variation of it.

Plus the fact that his name has "ecks ecks ecks" in front of it and no one knows how to say "tentación" (though the accent mark WOULD have made it easier to read) some people have tried to just shorten it to "ecks" but then everyone is like "who?" then they have to try and say his full name but they usually pronounce it wrong.

Idk it's just dumb. Someone like Lil Uzi Vert has no good music either, but at least their name/image is cool.

>DJ Yo-Yo Dieting - Dormant Mirrors / Drum
What an interesting release this is! It's tagged as chopped and screwed on rym, but it's definitely not your traditional c&s album. In fact, it leans much more to the plunderphonic side of things, with lots of morphed together, noisy samples and loops. But, when it gets to the chopped and screwed parts, its good. I'm not totally sure what to think of this yet, but I have a feeling it'll grow on me hard.
3.5
>DJ Pica Pica Pica - Planetary Natural Love Gas Webbin' 199999
This thing hits haaarrrd. It's packed with psychedelic energy and weird samples. And this is a lot of fun to listen to, too. There's lots of jungle and techno influence on this record, as well as even some world music influence. It keeps your attention for a good, fun 70 minutes.

Yeah, hmmm. Also, the track lengths and total runtime for Ayahuasca can be intimidating, but it's some of the most textured, organic-sounding drone you'll ever hear, with some cool folk songs thrown in

Ecco Jams, Ayahuasca, and Pass the Distance are all in my 9s, so I hope you like the other two as much as Ecco

Admittedly Pass the Distance has its highs and lows tho

Kool Moe Dee - How Ya Like Me Now
>East Coast Hip-Hop, Boom Bap

Going all the way back to 80s rap is such a mixed bag. Some of the technology sounds so dated now and the rapping is in such a weirdly different style. This is about as hit or miss as it gets, with tracks like “Wild Wild West” and the title track featuring some awesome production - with spacey, echo heavy beats. There’s a fair mix between jazz and funk influence as you’d expect from the era, which was tight. The last few tracks are pretty minimalist though and unfortunately they end up feeling boring and dated. But Kool Moe Dee’s rapping is surprisingly entertaining and kind of makes up for the beats with this earnest attitude and fun punchlines. Someone described this album like “your dad trying to rap” and it’s weirdly accurate. Corny and dated at times but something about this makes it stand out in a good way.

3.5/5

Lee Morgan - The Cooker
>Hard Bop

The earliest Morgan album, I’ve heard is unsurprisingly the most bebop influenced, with lots of fiery, rapid-fire soloing and a definite old school vibe. The tracks are musically impressive, with Morgan and and Pepper Adams trading off these ridiculous solos. I’ve really come to love Morgan’s trumpet work, whether it be as a frontman or on the Jazz Messengers. This doesn’t stand out quite as much as his other work I’ve heard so far but it’s still really entertaining.

Théâtre du Chêne Noir - Miss Madona (1973)
>Jazz Fusion
A very beautiful record, somewhat low key, that combines repetitive choir performances with ghostly jazz improvisations. I love how the low, slow choir chanting contrasts with the shrill, almost hopeful saxophone—it’s like the jesus light parting the clouds, you know? I could go off on a string of light and shadow metaphors, but ya’ll get the picture. Would highly recommend this EP.
>7+/10

Skip James - Greatest of the Delta Blues Singers (1965)
>Delta Blues
Eerie falsetto sung over equally abject delta blues-picked guitar (apparently in an unusual open E minor tuning). While many if not all of these songs were written before—and originally recorded and released in—1931, the songs on this album are all re-recorded in ’65. This was essentially on his deathbed, too. When he was rediscovered thirty-odd years after the original recordings, by John Fahey no less (his influence on Fahey’s work is surprisingly obvious), he was hospitalized and dying of cancer. The frailty in his voice is palpable, lending a certain undeniable gravity to these recordings.

The legendary “Devil Got My Woman” was actually one of the more underwhelming songs in the tracklist though, which was pretty perplexing. The rest is just fantastic. I especially love “Illinois Blues” and the nearly nasally, high-pitched “Cherry Ball Blues”. I really ought to compare this to “The Complete 1931 Session” release.

thx 4 rec, jangle

Beck - Mellow Gold (1994)
>Singer/Songwriter, Alternative Rock, Indie Rock, Lo-Fi
An odd collection of twangy, dusty, indie and alt rock ideas, kind of piled one on top of the other. The songs are usually fairly simple, with lots of neat ornaments and breaks to keep them interesting. I’m used to a much better-produced Beck and I have to say, I like this lo-fi indie (though still fresh, experimenting and finding his sound) side of Beck a good deal.

Camedor - En Ut / Alba (2017)
>Progressive Electronic, Krautrock, Minimalism
Side A of this long-ass single seems to literally just be a pared down, minimal synth-sounding, more danceable than usual, cover of Terry Riley’s “In C”—it’s basically Krautrock. It is definitely a very distinct version though. Even if you’re a big fan of “In C” and you’ve heard all the versions for full orchestra, Bang on a Can, string quartet, marimba, whatever—I think you’ll still find this rewarding.

Side B is another 12-minute mini-epic: another motorik odyssey (though this time, an original composition). It has this kind of muted cheeriness and odd sense of optimism to it, especially in the bouncy beat (cooly muted by the more neutral electric guitar melodies) which I really enjoyed. While I usually find TMT reviews to be overly enthusiastic in their overanalysis and creative review writing (they tried to get political with this one), I agree with JSpicer that this is the shot of happiness that really anyone could use right now.
>7+/10

Sun Araw - The Saddle of the Increate (2017)
>Neo-Psychedelia, Spoken Word
Stallones tries his hand at a more minimal, sparse sound, which when coupled with the spoken word lyrics, really reveal the dadaist tendencies of his music. Without all the usual reverb, distortion, and booming bass, it’s nearly schizoid. In a perverse way, it’s nearly meditative. It’s like all the neurons are only firing sporadically.

He also incorporates country twang all over the record, vocally, and with string-bent guitars, to great effect. It’s a very interesting, and even fun, listen for sure (memorable and even catchy too, on occasion) though I’m not sure how often I see myself returning. The whole thing stretches on too long, and the front half is actually weaker than the back half.

Big fan of the aesthetic, not so much the execution, maybe.

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - The Phantom Harp
>Ambient, Drone, Noise
A quick, dreamy, 20 minutes of raw bliss from JC-L, separated into a few movements. As always, he has such a way with noises and their textures. This release is softer than most, so it lacks that blinding searing hot white light aesthetic, but it’s still very pleasant. The first movement is probably my favorite though.
>7-/10

Kak - Kak (1969)
>Psychedelic Rock
Borderline progressive rock, chintzy heavy psych with a solid lead single. Against my better judgement, I find it pretty enjoyable actually.
>6+/10

David Kanaga - Operaism
>Plunderphonics, Chiptune, Glitch, Opera
Wow, what an unlikely, unearthly combination this is—chiptune, squeaky glitch, MIDI buzzing, orchestral string swells, soaring operatic vocals, Donald Duck samples—it’s a veritable rollercoaster of emotions (nostalgia, curiosity, confusion, bewilderment, namely). It’s actually exhausting to listen to. I agree with _nkb, this is definitely comparable to Revolutionary Pekinese Opera Ver.1.28. Definitely one of the best records of this year.
>8-/10

Amen Andrews - Volume 01 (2003)
>Jungle
Good jungle. I love the darker tones all over these songs, audible in the thick, warped, fluid bass and sporadic vocal sampling—many of the tracks have a techno vibe to them, despite the drumming strictly sticking them in the jungle camp. Andrews does a lot of cool stuff here, and ultimately makes some fun, memorable jungle music. Also, brownie points for the sweet Beefheart sample on the eponymous closer track, “Fast & Bulbous”—somehow works in some amazing angelic choir samples there too.

Amen Andrews - Volume 02 (2003)
>Jungle
Here Andrews plays with the standard Amen Break-styled jungle drums. “Dx” uses a very cool metallic bass sound and enhances the usual jungle drum set with some extra cymbal crashes and some cool stop time. “Blomen" further tweaks the texture of the break and throws in all kinds of samples. “Renegade” is actually a continuation of “Blomen” so it’s more of the same. These tracks are even more crowded than those on the last EP, and almost reach IDM-levels of polyrhythmicism and claustrophobia—hardly music for dancing I reckon.
>6+/10

Amen Andrews - Volume 3 (2003)
>Jungle
The third of Andrew’s rapid-succession jungle EP releases—I would say it’s getting stale by now, but he’s actually saving his catchiest tracks for last. They’re markedly more straightforward, but there’s still plenty of demented experimentation to go around.

Each EP in the series so far has had a deeming quality (is that a thing?) about it, so I hope the rest will be good too. I’ll listen to Volumes 04 and 05 eventually.

Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline (2007)
>ambient, drone

Not quite as natural and subtle as The Tired Sounds..., and much more "epic" and nearly film score-esque in nature, which definitely knocks it down a few points in my book. I can't fault it terribly much for this though, it's a new approach for the duo, complete with horns and strings to expand upon their typically guitar-centric sound, and barring these setbacks it's a total success. It still showcases the duo's uncanny ability to make two hours fly by, which is practically unheard of in the ambient/drone genres, and of course the subtler, more slow-burning tracks are still incredibly, unspeakably beautiful, and obviously perfect for sleeping. Pretty great for my third >2 hour ambient album in the past two weeks.

3.0+

吉村弘 - Green (1986)
>new age, ambient

Much better than his previous album, even it's still very light and easy listening. It pulls of this lightness with a lot more depth and beauty than his debut, though, and the move away from minimalism to more new agey territories is a good move given where Yoshimura's compositional strengths lie. Not the most complex compositions here, but there are quite a few moments on here that are very close to breathtakingly beautiful, and the incorporation of nature recordings is an incredible touch. The quietness of this is a nice touch as well, and I'm not even sure if that was a mastering issue or what, but it adds quite a lot to the whisper-thin nature of the album. Triangle, I know that we both didn't really like Music for Nice Post Cards, but check this out.

Ensemble Georgika - Music From Georgia, Vol. 1
>Georgian Folk Music, Polyphonic Chant
Wow, really gorgeous and beautifully captured group chanting. I assume this was recorded in a cathedral cause the acoustics are stellar.
Very interesting and unique blend of intersecting musical traditions. Obviously the music is heavily rooted in Gregorian chant styles. But I was picking up all kinds of flavors of Slavic vocal music (especially on the solos) and melismatic Arabic singing style.
Quite a melting pot of different musical cultures, which managed to keep it engaging throughout most of the run time.

great pick

Leo Soileau - The Early Recordings of Leo Soileau
>Traditional Cajun
it is a fact that your levels of toe-tappingness increase ten-fold with every fiddle added.
This comp has two fiddlers on it, so it's already bound to be a rip-roarin' good time right off the bat.
I actually enjoyed the accordion quite a bit. It wasn't doing anything fancy, but it gave the songs a nice, hearty, rhythmic bottom.
Cajun is just such a weird and interesting culture. And the music is just the same. A fascinating amalgamation of French roots and American folk tunes.
If I had any serious gripes it's that the vocals are just alright, and a lot of the songs are very very similar.

>Jandek – Dallas Thursday

A show from 2016. The lineup features the representative from Corwood on electric bass, his girl Sheila Smith on vocals, Chris Curiel on the trumpet and Andrew Miller on keyboards.

Jandek tried to do jazz before with Richmond Sunday. That one felt more like a free improvisational jam. This is legitimate cool jazz. A musically pleasant endeavor, much like the chamber performance of Atlanta Saturday, this record finds Sterling in the background of it all. It’s funny how every time he moves away from the leader position in the ensemble, they manage to sound coherent and soft.

The softness of the release is mostly indebted to Sheila’s marvelous vocal performance and Miller’s crystal keyboard sound. Curiel’s tumpet performances just add a certain hint of melancholy to the cloudy jazz mix. The lyrics complement the feeling of loneliness in a bar somewhere at 3 am. Hollowness and absence of someone in the world seems to be one of the major themes on here. My favorite was probably “A Dream”, where Sheila indulges in an internal conversation of 2 split personalities about what sounds like a playful dream she had.

It’s a wonderful performance. Grab your whiskey, grab your tears, tip your trilby, light your cigar and give this a listen. Since it achieves a similar level of coherence that I previously witnessed on Atlanta Saturday AND it features some great vocals along with it, I am going to give it the same rating.

Cut Hands - Black Mamba
Well, this idea of Bennett's is somewhat acceptable. The variety of drums he uses is rather decent and they are even quite appropriate. However, it would be better if he emphasized the pressing industrial sound less or at least made it more interesting (for instance, it sounds ok on "Krokodilo" or "No Spare No Soul", but is kinda dull on "Kongo" or "Erzulie D'En Tort"). The tribal ambient tracks are also a 50/50 hit (good - "Nine-Night", "54 Needles", eh - "El Palo Mayombe", "Nzambi Ia Muini"). The purpose of the opening track is unknown, it seems cheesy and not really fitting at all.

These New Puritans - Field Of Reeds
I haven't heard their "more rock" albums, so I don't have anything to compare it with, but this is rather decent. Maybe they played too much with neoclassical, even though the composition is at adequate level, it still feels a bit unnatural at times ("Nothing Else", "The Light In Your Name"), as if they're trying to write some melancholic movie soundtrack. However, in a combination with a more energetic art rock sound it's way better ("Fragment Two", "V (Island Song)"). "Organ Eternal" and "Field Of Reeds" are good melodies dragged for a little bit too long.

The Velvet Underground - White Light / White Heat
This is one hecking inconsistent album. "Here She Comes Now", which belongs on TVU & Nico, honestly, can't say the same about "Lady Godiva's Operation", yet nevertheless it somehow feels like there should be Nico's vocals there; "The Gift", which is like wtf. I guess you could form something more or less reasonable with "I Heard Her Call My Name", s/t track and "Sister Ray" (if you'd only keep the sound from the track throwing away its concept and structure), but it is how it is. And I totally don't mind it being like that.

Hey /daily/!

Was planning to record something but I'll just play along to The Seer for 2 hours instead. I'll post reviews I wrote today though cause I was bored.

>Coldplay - Parachutes

Coldplay is a really touchy subject for me because they were the wonderband that made me pick up a guitar that eventually resulted in me recording hour long pointless noise free improvisations but that’s not their major achievement. At some point in time they put me onto Radiohead, obsession with who lead yours truly to krautrock, Mingus, Sonic Youth and all that jangle. All started with Parachutes.

Revisiting it years later, I am not certain whether it is intense nostalgia that is clouding my judgment or that they were actually a solid pop rock band. All I know is that the album mixes very simple tracks with all the ditzy lyrical subjects. There are tracks with slightly more interesting chord progressions (Shiver stacks way too many chords), straight up Radiohead rip offs (does High Speed sound like anything other than Subterranean Homesick Alien?) and even alternate tunings (Spies)! I guess these 3 things are in no way accomplishments, but they definitely did seem to be to a young teen with an unhealthy gangsta rap obsession. Now they just sound like a distant, vague but soft memory.

Either way, it works. It all works here. Even the ultra-short title track with the simplest chord changes manages to sound sweet. The 2 tracks I don’t particularly like (Sparks and We Never Change) have a bland physiognomy but are able to keep the album together regardless. I really don’t get why people hate on this. Martin’s voice is inoffensive. Is it the occasional blandness of everything that pisses people off? Beats me.

Good debut. Post-britpop radio cannon fodder that I still enjoy to this day just for the simple fact that the band itself doesn't seem to be that emotionally invested into small and silly songs. It's just really nice to have around.

>The Breeders - Pod

Kim Deal rocks. This was established prior to this album with her Pixies performances, but this is where she truly shines. This album clashes tons of my favorite things: Kim’s vocals, Albini’s raw (in this case RRRAAAAAWWWWWW) production, songs about liberated heartbreak survivors and just Britt Walford in general.

The album is pretty short and just brings out a powerhouse of alt rock after another. On top of everything, the entire album is ultra catchy. Punchy basslines projected against clean and distorted guitar leads with a mechanism that is Britt. So goddamn simple. To raise the simplicity levels they even covered a Beatles track. Mind you it is one of the more interesting tracks they could have touched upon so kudos to the ladies and Shannon Doughton a.k.a. the drumming guy from Slint. The latter is responsible for the hilarious small instance of classic Albini-esque studio banter at the end of the cover (“Josephine, do you think you’re going bald?”).

Humor aside, there are moments where emotions overtake the silliness of it all. Kim’s voice cracks on Oh! and her vocal breaks on Iris are my favorite. The tracks get slightly more serious closer towards the end of the album, but they never let go of the “we’re totally having fun here” sensation. That’s what matters. That’s why putting this album on whenever and wherever for the mere 30 minutes is a relaxing and energizing experience.

The only reason why I cannot give it a perfect rating is the closing Metal Man. I just don’t like it anywhere near as much as the rest of the record. It just seems monotone and boring. The one burst of energy really doesn’t do much either.

Almost perfect pop record with tons of raw energy. Very simple too!!! I tend to listen to it more and more lately during the short time breaks where no other album will fit.
