The point of these threads is to critically analyse musical traditions from all over the world, including the western pop canon, and perform discourse on the topic. This discourse shapes what is allowed to be discussed and who is allowed to take part. As a shibboleth against lowbrows, the highest caliber of dank memes is used as communication. By doing this, we can create a utopia for true music lovers and colonise the planet, solar system, and galaxy. Every single utterance here is broadcast wirelessly, somewhere, some time, and will as such be launched into the infinity of thoughts.

Sorry for being a bit late triangle, I work long-ass wagecuck shifts on weekends.

Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane
>East Coast Hip-Hop, Boom Bap
I have to agree with the general consensus here: This is absolutely awesome at times (i.e. the famous tracks like Rae and Ain't No Half-Steppin'), but the majority of the tracks aren't *that* great. And though I generally think older hip-hop has its own clunky charm when it comes to production, it does not mesh well with Kane at all on some track.

Also, The Day You're Mine is an amazingly awful track. The ethereal synth it's built around is interesting, but the rest of it is really fucking bad.

Ivanov Down - Best Urban Technical Noises
>Noise Rock, Post-Punk
Ivanov Down is one of Ukraine's most legendary bands, up there with the likes of Kollezhskiy Asessor, Mandri, Kazma Kazma, etc. This release reminds me a lot of the more famous scene in Omsk - there is that oppressive Soviet atmosphere with the swirly guitars, raw feedback, etc. It also reminds me a bit of No Wave, with the nonsensical screaming vocals, weird extended techniques and the habit of ending tracks without a real climax.

It's an overall very good release I think, but it's not without issue. The made-up language gimmick sounds really goofy, for starters. And the tracks need a bit more diversity - I wish there were more plodding, slow sections as opposed to the more common bursts of energetic feedback.

It's only a little over half an hour long, if you like post-punk like 90% of /daily/ does you should listen to it. Like DNA meets late-80s Grazhdanskaya Oborona.

Teresa Winter - Oh Tina, No Tina
>Hypnagogic Pop, Ambient Pop

Quite enjoyable, and a quick listen. The opening track is like a looping opening for some sort of pop song. Simon Peter James follows dizzily with a twisted drum machine sample, Wool marries Ferraro with Lopatin, and Bounce 700 features more of Winter's lo-fi echoes, standard of Hypnagogic. Cannot Look takes it slower on the samples and strips the song down to a single pattern, and The Place to Be bounces several drums like balls over something out of an ambient album.

Fourteen Nights picks things up with, morphing from a progressive synth line similar to the previous tracks, into murky rave, and back again. How Strange Are Bodies is a nice penultimate track, amorphous but consistent in it's melancholia. All My Holes sounds like it was plucked straight out of the closer of some cult avant-garde horror film, repeating its titles to spares winds and an underwater string section, and abruptly ending it all with a metallic slam of some sort.

An intriguing, if repetitive album. Looking forward to more from this artist.

Satie Vol. 2 was good but by far the slowest interpretation I've heard yet; the Gymnopedies are 20% slower than the '95 release (15:52 vs 13:11), and even they are slow. For reference Rogé's After the Rain clocks in at 8:21, and the Ciccolini Gymnopedies recordings are 7:39. That said, they are great but lack the emotional delivery of the '95 release; I think he really nailed the pacing on that one. Still a fantastic release overall though.

Julia Holter - Ekstasis (2012)
>art pop, baroque pop, progressive pop

Like the genre tags suggest, this is Holter's most progressive album, filled with long, sprawling songs and large amounts of tempo and instrumetation changes. Sadly, this bend towards more progressive song structures still can't make this anywhere near as interesting as her other records. It's not as out-there and experimental as Tragedy, not as intense or intimate as Loud City Song, and not as well-written or atmospheric as Have You in My Wilderness. In making her tracks longer and more sprawling, Holter sacrifices most of what makes her a good songwriter, obscuring melodies and her lovely voice in walls of uninteresting ambient, and her experimental elements are pretty much gone, while the meandering tendencies of her experimental works still remain. Still a decently solid album, and it's great to drift away to, but it's definitely her weakest, and an odd transitional album.

2.5-

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - Twinkle Echo (2003)
>indietronica, lo-fi indie, indie pop

I think I'd like this a lot more if it had a more fitting vocalist and it wasn't so goddamn repetitive. Every song is structured in such away that the first verse keeps getting repeated ad nauseum, and it makes even the nicest, most concise pop songs wear on you. This is definitely not good for a thirty minute album. The vocals would fit better with a more organic sound, but the synthesizer-laden atmosphere of the album makes Ashworth's deep, husky voice stick out like a sore thumb. The sound of the album is pretty damn great, I love the sound of the synths, and the songwriting is definitely solid (see "Blue Corolla"), but there's simply not enough content here to make a thirty minute album seem worthwhile, it's mind-numblingly repetitive both from a songwriting standpoint and a sound-based standpoint.

Bedhead - WhatFunLifeWas (1994)
>slowcore

This album very delicately balances the pastoral, downtrodden slowcore of Low or Red House Painters and the noisy, angsty slowcore of Codeine and lowercase, and it does the latter style incredibly. The former style is done well, and it's certainly the cozier of the two styles, but the tracks can blend together, mainly because that style has a bit of a tendency to get stale if repeated over and over again, but the couple super underwhelming tracks in this style can't bring the album down terribly much if the emotional slowcore is so damn good. These tracks are incredibly catchy and emotionally draining at the same time, they get you humming along to them despite being so passionate and downright heavy, which is probably the greatest compliment I can give to music in this vein. The immaculate guitar work keeps everything together, even on the tracks I don't really like that much. Essential listening for any slowcore fan.

Virginia Astley - From Gardens Where We Feel Secure (1983)
>ambient, new age

I really can't say much about this, but it's certainly the most downright cozy album on this chart so far. It's a warm blanket of an album, and while it's definitely a bit too overbearingly pastoral and twee, it's one of the most pleasant albums I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. It's pretty much just impressionist piano pieces with nature recordings of birds, and if that doesn't sound like the coziest thing ever, I don't know what to say.

Touché Amoré - …To the Beat of a Dead Horse (2009)
>screamo

Besides Trans I'm probably one of the bigger screamo fans here, and even I think this is a bit too overdone. The vocals don't even seem terribly emotive, they seem like they're trying to be emotional but they're just limp and screechy. I like power in my screamo, this has no power at all. Frankly the parts of this most removed from screamo are the best, they're catchy, fun hardcore, but the actual screamo is pretty lousy. Honestly the cover is kinda wasted on the actual album.

Ivanov-Down - Best Urban Technical Noises
>Noise Rock, Post-Punk
Like Letov mentioned, I think this record works better during the more moody and deliberate industrial sections, rather than the fast-paced, punk-y parts.
I like how rhythmic this album is. The drums are very simple but they keep a sturdy and menacing beat. It reminds me a lot of World domination enterprises in that regard.
I liked a lot of the guitar noises as well, there was a lot more too it than just a lot of overdrive. Some really cool sounding screechy, a-tonal melodies.
I didn't like the singing much at all. There were a few moments where it went into an alright dark, monotone voice, but most of the time I just found it obnoxious.
Also, maybe it's just me, but I kinda wished this had been recorded in a proper studio. I think a good production job would have made this stand out even more, and maybe even fixed the vocals.

Just a few short thoughts of things I heard this past week or so:

"Spem in Alium" is probably one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I was legit glad to be alive and have the fortune to hear something like that honestly. That album never quite reached that level again but it's all at least pretty good.

Deconstructing Nature isn't shit for about a full eight seconds. Worst thing I've heard in quite some time!

The Red in the Sky Is Ours was surprisingly consistent. I'm usually really turned off by the more technical side of metal, but this wasn't quite on the virtuostic-wankery as I expected. A pretty great surprise honestly.

Wasn't expecting to care for If I Should Fall From Grace With God as much as I did, but it's a pretty damn fun, consistent album. Far from perfect and the b-side is kind of lacking comparatively, but if you're looking for an emotional, fun, Celtic-based rock album, I would highly rec this.

I Am a Bird Now has one great song, a few good/okay songs and really nothing else. Not sure if the charm of this girl's voice wore off after the first track or if it really is that much better, but everything after just didn't do it for me.

And wtf rym friends?? Viva Last Blues is incredible, and how it doesn't even have a 3.10 from you guys just boggles me. I have a soft spot for a lot of alt-country though, so maybe it's me with the problem.

Could go into more detail about any of these or any others I didn't talk about if requested but for now I'll leave it at that. Should finish this very soon and get on to the new chart.

OH and maybe I'll write a longer review of A Crow Looked at Me soon-ish, but don't expect any opinion you haven't heard before.
AOA only has a single good song but damn they look amazing
Oh My Girl is hit-and-miss
they have one of those infantile innocent images and the cutesy, saccharine sound that's sort of expected with such a concept

it gets annoying at times, but they have competent producers and some better-than-average vocals (better than the kpop average at least)

i recommend Windy Day (the album), that's their most balanced effort
ignore the new single, it's p wack

Ugh in my time without a laptop I got so complacent musically and felt just so little enjoyment. I need to kickstart my engine.
Calling out for NOISE recs. I've never really dived into it so I'm looking for something to kick my ass. Any NOISE recs, or any kind of tunes that incorporate NOISE in some way. Noise Rock? Gimme it. Noise Punk? Gimme it? Noise Noise? Gimme it

not exactly an obscure list but just making sure you've heard these

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
TVU - White Light / White Heat
Dinosaur Jr - You're Living All Over Me
Les Rallizes Denudes - '77 Live
Big Black - Songs About Fucking
Birthday Party (their first is my fav but start with Prayers on Fire prob)

I'm not that into pure noise tho, listen to Metal Machine Music if you haven't already Sonic Youth med Mats Gustafsson og Merzbow - SYR 8: Andre sider af Sonic Youth is cool too.
>>
>>71965322
yeah heard all of them dog, the Birthday Party was actually the first band I got into at age nine or ten or something stupid. If ye've never heard their Live 81-82 album you should get on that, probably the best document of the bands progression and insane live shows

Maybe try The Heads - Everybody Knows We Got Nowhere if you dig The Stooges/Stoner Rock. Also Parquet Courts - Monastic Living if you want a no-wavey noise record that only I seem to think was fantastic. Kinda drawing a blank on recs off the top of my head.

My Electronic/Experiemtnal Music class this semester looks poseur as fuck. Very excited for this semester. From the syllabus, we're going to spend a day or two on these topics:

>Musique Concrète and Tape Music
>American Avant-Garde, Process Music, and Minimalism
>Analog Synthesizers and Sequencers
>Digital Audio, Early Computer Music, and MIDI
>Dub and Early Hip-Hop
>90’s IDM and Glitch
>Electronic Music in Japan and Asia

She played some examples of what kind of music we're gonna be discussing this semester and it was pretty cool. Some people were PISSED though oh my god. I guess they thought this was gonna be a class about EDM or something and left thoroughly disappointed.

Also, going to see Mount Eerie tonight. I'll letchy'all know if it's a genuinely good show or a giant pity party. Excited either way.

Dude, that's poseur heaven

I'm between taking a Beatles class with some friends and taking my school's own poseur class by myself. Previously the experimental music class was 6000-level, so it was out of reach, but they just dropped it to 2000.

It's my last year, and both courses are offered at the same time, fall semester only. If I take one I'll never take the other.

Hmmm

v/a - Bambara Mystic Soul: The Raw Sound of Burkina Faso 1974-1979
>Afro-Funk

I get some weird feeling of bittersweet nostalgia when I listen to things like this, does anyone else know this feel? It's a bit difficult to describe without wandering into ascendant level pretentious fuck territory, but it's like finding some relic of a time where everything was happier and simpler, even if that probably wasn't the case.

Anyway, this release is a whole lot of fun. Amadou Balaké towers over it (as evidenced by the fact he gets several tracks), but there's not a bad track here. This is an hour and ten minutes of carefree funk, with cheap guitars and organs, crazy horns and joyous singing. But, while nothing here is bad, around half of it doesn't even compare to the highs, and some of the tracks meander and lose their groove by the end.

I must complain about how this is mixed though, I dunno if it's just an issue with the Spotify version but the vocals are mixed too high and the bass is mixed too low (why would you do that with funk...?), which knocks a lot of energy out of some songs. Another thing to mention is that some people might also take issue with how "raw" the recording of this is, but I think it adds to the charm.

3.5

>>71977263
The fact that so many /daily/ trips name a Beatles class as the "greatest" or "most significant" or "most interesting" music class at co's college only goes to show how far /daily/ has to go to become a respectable thread.

my friend, one of the biggest Beatles fans ever at a slightly smaller college took a Beatles class and he said it was waaay too specific and wasn't fun after a bit unless you just happened to know what Ringo's ass smelled like on the day they recorded Revolver.

I would swing for the poseur class if you're looking for something you'll enjoy more.

April March - Chick Habit (1995)
>yé-yé

The title track is so infectious I was able to sing along with it in my mind perfectly just from hearing it in Death Proof a single time, and I really don't like that movie. It's a perfect throwback track but it's got enough modern punk/garage rock sensibilities to make it a thrill ride of a song, and the guitars and vocals are perfect. The French version of the track feels like a throwaway, and the other three tracks kinda do too. The closer is a pretty Gainsbourg cover, but it does little to add upon the original, and honestly the fact that every single track is in fact a cover makes this feel kinda worthless. But it's a really enjoyable little throwback to a great style of music.

I'm not even sure how I got branded as /daily/'s resident Libertarian™, I don't subscribe to any off-the-shelf ideology and view issues as seperate entities. It's weird how people who aren't staunch conservatives or frothing-at-the-mouth liberals are filed under the catch-all 'libertarian' label.

Laika - Sounds of the Satellites (1997)
>trip hop, dream pop

Probably the best trip hop release I've ever heard. This may seem like faint praise coming from someone who only really likes Portishead and a couple Massive Attack songs, but this is pretty much exactly what the genre always promises but that it never delivers on. It's way too long, and the fact that the last song consists mostly of twenty minutes of silence makes me wanna hate this out of principle (why did so many artists do this in the '90s?), yet the album's playful take on a genre generally known for being incredibly dark and moody easily negates most of it's flaws. The beats are repetitive and dismal yet melodic, and the samples and soundscapes strewn throughout are really pleasant and almost goofy at times. The album cover reminds me of that one Wallace and Gromit short where they go to the moon to get cheese, and the album itself even reminds me of that too, which is pretty damn high praise.

Way to block my path there.
>I would not call that man an artist, for example, who composes an eloquent instigation to one people to fall upon another and destroy them. No matter how striking his imagery or how beautiful his cadences fall such a man is no more a great artist than another may be called a priest who reads the mass backwards or a physician who poisons his patients. All those men in Nazi Germany who lent their talent to the service of virulent racism whether in science, philosophy or the arts have generally and rightly been condemned for their perversions.

Very interesting, relaxing ambeint r&b. The vocals are so pretty and ethereal, and the recordings in the street feel so real to me. What makes this release special for me are all the details sprinkled in. Its only 17 minutes, check it out if you haven't.

>Current 93 - I Have a Special Plan for this World
I remember listening to All the Pretty Little Horses a long time ago and thinking it was the most pretentious thing I'd ever heard, and came off as super forced. This release is way better. I really like the drones in this, and the poem didn't feel as forced as I would have expected. I was still a bit bored, but nonetheless, it was still enjoyable.

>Jandek - Six and Six
I'm leaving this unrated for now because I feel like it's not clicking with me. I don't love it, but I don't dislike it either. It feels like something I should really like given some of the albums I've loved in the past, but it just hasn't struck a chord with me yet. I'm gonna come back to this after I listen to Ready for the House, and maybe then I'll have some thoughts.

I'm just nitpicky and wanted to stick to the topic of music to pretend to be on topic.

For the most part though it seems Achebe wants HoD to be less revered (though not necessarily less read, though that isn't too far from what he seems to want) for being racist while also calling Conrad himself a racist. It misses the point of the novella when the point isn't even really that colonialism is bad but rather that everyone has the sort of "darkness" in them even if they pretend to be civilized.
Also the way I read it he was talking more in general: if you worked for a racist end/way you can't be considered "great" art. Which is not at all true. Again, look at the Karajan estate and his generally positive reviews.

>Inquisition - Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm

Man those vocals were just so bad. What made it worse though, was they were bad and soulless. There wasn't any emotion to them, just some guy doing this deep gargly monotone thing. The instrumentals were good though.

Gil Evans - The Individualism of Gil Evans (1964)
>post-bop, progressive big band

"Flute Song / Hotel Me" is a corker, perfectly balancing big band and bop. The other three tracks are a bit too "cool" and subdued, but still expertly composed and performed.

>ambient, post-rock

An album full of the parts of Sigur Rós' albums that I really don't like—the buildups. It's an hour of build-ups with little release to be found, save for a few tracks. Nicely cozy, and Jónsi's vocals never fail to floor me, but a slog.

VA - Bambara Mystic Soul
>Afro-Funk, Afrobeat
interesting little comp of funky afro-rhythms from one of the less visible scenes. What I like about this record is the uniqueness in sound. Most of the bands are playing a typical funk set up, but you can definitely tell the regional style is the main driver of the songwriting. Has a heavy afrobeat leaning with all the polyrhythms and group choruses.
I have to agree that the mix on most of these songs isn't that good. More so than the bass, I thought the drums were mixed surprisingly low for such a rhythm-oriented style of music. It ended up kinda flattening the energy of some songs.
Another gripe I have is repetition. I get that most afrobeat is principled on repetition, but when it's lacking that jazzy improvisation like a Fela Kuti record would have, it gets a little dull listening to the same repeating melody from beginning to end.

Basically I get why you're upset by this so I don't want to lecture you but I think you're woefully misinterpreting Achabe there. I mean moral condemnation and reverence for the arts doesn't even have to be mutually exclusive in the first place. As for him thinking that Conrad was racist, I didn't get the impression that this was the case based on the synopsis, nor do I think it's an unreasonable suggestion if racism is taken as just racially motivated cognitive bias, which is not necessarily condemnable but rather something that can lead to "active" racism. He does seem to condemn Conrad at the end, so I'd have to check the original essay to figure out what he's talking about exactly. Also Achabe agrees with you that Heart of Darkness is not about colonialism. I forget what the synopsis said but that part didn't seem outrageous at all either.
I don't know anything about the Karajan estate but seeing how the essay at hand doesn't mention it I think I'm pretty safe not looking it up.

Also you really shouldn't encourage me when I post like that.

>Rare Silk - American Eyes
>Synth Funk, 1985

Impresses from every single angle.

In regards to harmony, some of these song dive in pretty nasty dissonance and completely bizarre modulation with total grace. Song structures put twists on usual pop formats, meandering into funky jam sessions on the regular. Vocals are constantly precise and the ensemble/chorus work is great. Rhythms are syncopated and constantly evolving. Instrumental work is solid, the bass in particular and other instruments when they get solos.

On the surface, it comes across like totally nice & classy jazz funk. When you dig deeper into it, it is an ocean of wonderful and unusual musical ideas to explore. And, it is crafted well so the stranger aspects don't distract too much from how simply nice it is to listen to.

This will probably settle somewhere around an 8 or 9.

For now,

9/10.

Seriously loved it.

I've been /liking/ a lot of music recently I think this is a very good chart

Michael Hurley/Unholy Mountain Rounders/Jeffery Fredrick and the Clamtones - Have Moicy!
it's a heap of fun, I came back to this over and over in the course of two weeks because my friend told me it's a real grower, and it is.
It's not perfect, can't really get around Jackknife/The Red Newt, but the rest are p cool, fiddle is great... Griselda is genuinely the best song I've heard in a year, it's so twee that it deserves to be included in a Wes Anderson movie of some sort (ahaha snicker at me if you want)

King Khan and the Shrines - The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines
also a lot of fun
kinda typical canadian garage rock in one way, but with saxophones and other brass instruments, Khan himself has some stage presence, kind of a mixture between Iggy Pop and Charles Brown, although at points he can get annoying
yeah dude, give it a shot

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Murder Ballads
The best Nick Cave album I've heard I would say
really dark, really cool, don't really have that much to say about it, Nick Cave's discography just forms into this amorphous mass for me in that he kinda has a formula, this is the best iteration of that formula, everything is firing on all cylinders

Digable Planets - Blowout Comb
eh, it's a rap album, maybe I'm missing something, didn't really enjoy it that much, wasn't terrible though.

The Dead C - Tusk
It's ok, it does what it says on the tin, it's a noise rock album, nothing really gripped me though

Modest Mouse - Building Something Out of Nothing
Modest Mouse are good at songwriting, this was a good compilation. That is all

what next
