Pretty much every synth in the link above. I'm a sucker for 80s sounds. SQ8L was a godsend.
>>
>>71912911
These are all nitpick i think its nice so anyways.
1.Kick not loud enough.
2.In 2:15 that sound that hits has no place there it serves no purpose do a fill or something a little melodic out of it.
but yeah thats it

https://clyp.it/5p1iqs0g

Reposting from last thread since I didn't really get any feedback.
As I said before, completely clueless, don't know how to stop everything from sounding like like watery shite

>>71912796
Well I'm six minutes in and I'm still engaged, so I disagree with >>71912962 on that point, it has a nice atmosphere imo, but I would agree that the drums need a bit more variation
>>
I'm planning to build around this, what do you think?

I spent maybe half an hour on this idea, fyi. But the production already seems kinda better than usual. Maybe I'm improving without noticing, or my ears are going to shit lol. I'm not sure if the pads would be better with less or more lowpass though.
>>

That high pitched sound isn't really mixed well with the rest. At parts like 0:50-1:05 I'd get rid of it or not make the notes so short. The bass is a bit too shitty and farty tbqhwy. Also work on your singing, it's not tight enough.
>>
>>71913198

Do you mean 3:08 or something? I'll have another look at the chords throughout, thanks

Renoise. If you make music that doesn't require recording real instruments or Ableton's warping its silly to use anything other than a tracker.

Lot of fabfilter and uhbik stuff on this one. Every instrument is a sample except for some stuff at the end so I have to spend a lot of time massaging stuff in to place mixwise.
I use battery 4 for drums, and the lead in the house section is an iris 2 that I think is sampling some heron or pelican or some shit.

Is the NI Komplete Kontrol s25 Good?

I'm buying my first midi keyboard. The only thing I'm worried about is limitations due to it being sorta a closed interface. Will it work with VSTI's in some sort of midi mode if the developer didn't put in specific integration with it?

Personally i reckon you should put more variation in the bassline and the melody.
I know its meant to be prog trance or w/e but it would be nice to hear the melody go somewhere.

Has anyone tried Reaktor here? I saw a lecture by one of NI guys and it seems to be very intersting VA modular synth stuff. I don't really have the 200 euros for it and it seems a bit of a hassle to pirate, o I wanna know if its worth getting into.
>>
>>71913210

>>71920164
i know but he was very helpful and specific last thread

>>
>>71920222
If you're interested in dsp and making your own tools and are willing to put the work in to learn it, its great. If you have any more specific questions I can probably answer them I've been using Reaktor for years.

Its also really not that difficult to pirate.
>>

Where to buy good patch cables?
>>
>>71920478
I am quite intersted in DSP, I'm just getting into it but I can do stuff in matlab and PD.

I want to know how to get started with Reaktor, as what releases (pirate) i need to get? I see some factory library, some blocks, some other things. I downloaded a release that s apparently just the update, because it failed to install due to no previous installation. I don't really need every single componen, a basic version would be fine to start.

Is there a recommended version/bundle? Any preferred group? I can't find it on my usual scene site, and I'm afraid to try googling untrusted sites.

>>
>>71921185
Yeah this sounds bloody nice, honestly there's nothing that jumps out at me as being completely wrong or out of place, in terms of the composition.
A good mix would just solidify the track nicely.
I don't know shit though, so take what i say with a grain of salt.
>>
>>71921173

bit of a weird one but let's do it.

so basically, lately i've been dealing with some mad impostor syndrome feels.

used to have so much fun at the beginning when i first started producing; everything made by me banged in my head and the lack of attention/recognition was such a blessing when i think about it now.

i then started getting '''''better'''''. bare tunes of mine getting spun at rinse, radar, nts, mode, etc., videos of people going absolutely insane with some bits of mine at raves in dalston, some of my fave djs getting close to myself and all that shit.

recently i started comparing my stuff to the stuff of some youngsters in my scene that don't get 1/5 of the attention i receive. some of these lads make incredible shit with limited as fuck resources and literally get told to shut up and stop being a beg when they ask for some feedback from the bigger dons.

why the fuck am i getting so many opportunities with what i now think are flukes? do i only get them because i'm a nice boy with everyone? feels like one day the practical joke is gonna be over and everyone will start telling me that indeed everything i make is dogshit...

it's so fucked, bros. just want out if i'm gonna be feeling like this every single day. wtf.

Be honest with yourself do you like the music you make ? dose it sound good to you ?
The way to know if a song you made is good is if you keep dancing/banging your head while listening to it for like a day streight.
most producers dont do that cause subconsciously they know their song is meh thats why they just upload it and forget about it.

Is this really a thing ?
>>
>>71924374

I like all three of these and I don't really listen to that kinda stuff usually, mostly because the style has become oversaturated with shitty attempts at it but yours are really well made.

The one thing I'd say is that there's a scene for this stuff right now and all scenes (once fully established) are intolerant of noobs - the situation you're describing is pretty commonplace and you're feeling guilt because you're seeing the merit in what you're hearing from the noobs but you're not getting why they're being excluded.

That doesn't make your material shitty - there's an element of luck to getting your stuff recognised even when it's really good and it has to do with timing, you joined the scene before it became more closed to new members.

There is a way to help them, and yourself in the process - help promote the noobs. If you're doing well with your music but starting to doubt yourself you could start your own label and prove to yourself that your judgement is sound.

Yeah there's not very many questions asked about that stuff - every now and again there will be spikes in activity based upon specific subjects. One anon used to post a lot about their mic collection that led to some interesting chat and at those times you could see that there was a fair amount of knowledge among some of the people posting.

Again, if subjects like vintage tape machines get brought up it can get some people sharing but I agree - if the questions don't get asked and subjects don't get raised then no-one with any significant experience will start a conversation on their own.

Anything specific you have an interest in?

What's a good drum machine for a beginner? New to this whole music production thing, but I think it would be cool to start out with a drum machine to just jam on.

I was looking at the volca beats, but they seem a bit "cheapy" and the design looks flimsy. They have good reviews so was wondering if anybody here had any experience with that. I'd love to get my hands on an old elektron machinedrum, but I don't think you can get those anymore, at least not cheap.

I used to use one called Ardour that was okay, though I still preferred using Reaper under WINE. You have to mess around a little with JACK to get it working depending on what interface you have, but it's nothing too complicated. Reaper isn't technically free (though it is a lot less expensive than other daws), but it has a free trial that doesn't technically expire and doesn't lock you out of any features.

Basic 2step pattern but sycopate the first snare. 16th note swing on the hats and ghost snares to get the shuffly feel. Sounds like pitched versions of the snare sometimes on the 16th before and after the second snare.

Sound wise you've got shakers instead of hats, thuddy snares like a woodblock rather than twangy ones. Claps occasionally layered into the snare. Sounds like a subtle flanger on the snare sometimes. Use Ableton's erosion plugin to add some grit. Eq the very high frequencies out.

Can having a mediocre soundcard limit expensive headphones?
>>
>>71934861
I'm not an expert, but I'd think that the headphone amp and the DAC would be the most important parts when it comes to headphone use. If your soundcard isn't great at either of those things, it could be a limitation.

What kind of headphones do you have? Whether the amp is sufficient or not can depend on the impedance of the headphones.

Hey, so I'm really just no good with mixing.
This song is basically how I want it structurally, but the sound isn't there. The vocals feel tacked on in the mix, the guitar jam at the end feels like it's swamping the mix and getting muddied, do you have any advice anyone? I'm bad at EQ and stuff honestly and hardly use it cos when I do it just sounds worse.

The intended tone was closer to a mixture of these two songs in vibe/feel

I'm not a pro or anything so I can't really give you really specific criticism. That sounded a lot better than I expected it to, though, based on what you said. You seem to have a good ear and are good at picking out weaknesses in your own mixes, though, so with some work, I don't see why you couldn't be great at it. I really enjoyed the composition. Keep it up.

>>
>>71934976
drums are too smashed, the kick pumps the cymbals hard. use a detector highpass on your bus compressor if you need them to be smashed like that
vocals are rhythmically unstable, align them with the guitar line which is on time, a real quick edit job
the clean guitar on the right needs some sort of room, as do the vocals. both elements don't blend because they're too dry for the rest of the mix
also considering using a doubler or double tracking rhythm guitars to get rid of the annoying left side heavyness

>>
>>71934976
As the other guy said, drums are too squashed and are pumping too much. Ease up on the compression. You could also try out parallel compression.

Left guitar could use a very little bit of a hi cut to get rid of some of the white noise-type high end it has. That may just be my taste though. Right guitar is too dry and could use reverb. The vocals are also dry and could use reverb.

There's a room tone in the vocals I hear that is probably somewhere around 250-300hz if I had to guess. Try and see if you can find it and cut it a bit. Like what this guy does at 3:35

here's a post-/prod/ question

say, i've finished and released an album. now how do i get people to listen to it?
i feel that it's almost impossible for a nobody to persuade others to click on an album and not turn it off for almost an hour even if the music is quite alright.

what i find myself doing at this point is marketing my album as a similar type of thing to another acclaimed album that most people know and love.
but that's bullshit because it primes the listener to look for similarities instead of taking the thing for what it is.

Hey, so let's say as an artist you have two very distinct kind of sounds, you rarely mix the two though.

I like making shoegazy gloomy indierock, but I also like making instrumental extremely left field electronic/glitch/progrock stuff.

Would it make sense to put them on the same release or under the same name? Or does it make more sense to go under different names for different styles when it goes to extremes.

I'm just wondering cos I can see certain merits to the diversity and variety of it, and if you can get them to flow track to track well it could be neat. Would it just be circumstantial or do you think there's a golden rule about this?

This is my first track ever. Definitely looking for feedback/criticism. Spent a long time on this guy.
>>
>>71940643
Very nice for your first track, but it's still like a 7/10 song at most. I think the kick could have been a better sample, and your main chord synth, although it sounded nice and the synth was nice, could have been layered or beefed up to sounds fuller wider and better. The end bit was my favorite.
>>
Thanks, trying the demo now.
>>
>>71940861
Thanks for listening and for the feedback. I get what you mean about the richness of the synth. I was having trouble mastering the song after bouncing it out of logic, and I couldn't get it to sound the same as it did in logic unfortunately haha

Hey can someone give this a listen and tell me if it's well produced? I love the bass sound on this album and was wondering if I was just an idiot. I want to replicate it. Not even that great of an album.

would like feedback on this
https://soundcloud.com/hate-child/dental-misorder
been a while since I did something this guitar-centric so I threw this together earlier and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out in general. Mainly wondering what people think of the drums
>>
>>71941895
the particular sounds you use doesn't really matter, just find sounds that you like and make shit that sounds good
>>
>>71942004
yeah definitely, i'm past thinking using presets is bad, just wondering about the preset packs uploaded on trackers, maybe some are worth getting but from what i've seen most cater to edm trash
>>

ya, sorry bro i dont know much about that stuff. cant help you much. but good luck

>>71940992
like a 7/10, and i kinda like it, you could have a better intro though, and more variation in your melodies

>>71941117
all three

>>71941915
as soon as the kick and snare come in the drums get out of sync with the rest of the sounds. after 1:50 everything starts to feel better though.

>>71941895
do a little bit of both imo, but more of the latter. Get good at making and mixing and using good sounds, there's no use using a bunch of professionally made presets if you're going to process them in a shitty way , or mix them oddly. check this out if you already haven't: https://youtu.be/atvtBE6t48M

>>71942335
everything sounds good man, you should finish more of your stuff.

>>71942883
hey get rid of that really sawy buzzy synth, and make your progressive house synth more interesting by layering it up with a few other sounds.

Which DAW has the best free version or version available to pirate?

I already tried FL Studio 12.3 from TPB, but it was full of visual bugs and other glitches.

It's not bad, sounds like Kaytranada a bit, might wanna swing your drums a bit, vary up the synth sound, add some more percussive elements.

I'm this junkie here>>71944847
Kinda busy with RL stuff so i just played it on the phone and from what i can hear the mix itself is nice and crisp.
i like this style but 0:28 0:58 need some work so that after 0:59 would sound more epic ;).
have some ideas if you wanna hear them but after im done with irl stuff

I think this is pretty much finished. First thing I put together in a really long time.

Worked no this last 3 days, programmed in Renoise but sequenced in Audacty, it have turned into a mess.

Should I look at Reaper, Logic, Cubase? I just want controll over the sound. I have pretty much mp experience with sequencer DAWs. I've stuck with trackers.

You should definitely move on to a DAW. FL studio has the most native synths/effects/plugins compared to any other DAW if it's a hassle to set stuff up.

>>71945666
Sounds good man, a DAW would make this way way easier.

Already got FL 12 installed, will try it out today. You Ive heard the image line filters are good, I dig the reverb and philter.

But I'll stick with trackers for a while even though i reallu should move, there's Redux is a lite Renoise made into a VST so there's no reasen to not move really.

Trying to mix elements of psychadelic rock into hiphop production, this is the first result I'm really happy with.

https://clyp.it/p1roi1ou

>>71945375
Cut the intro length, it is too long for nothing really happening. Once it gets started its nice, though i'd add some swing to a lot of the elements so that it grooves a bit better
>>
>>71945717
Get a mastering limiter/maximizer (I just use iZotope Ozone) and compress it a bit after mixing. However this will sound like shit if the mix is bad.
>>
>>71945485
>>71945743
Thanks guys, I will add some swing!

>>71945743

>>
>>71945485
>>71945577
So continuing where i left of.
My "ideas" are acually tips or theories that will make your song better imo.
So first thing is never try to "build up" to anything like your main lead or something.
Insted try to make every part of your song unique and intresting clearly in your song from 0:28 you were trying to build to 0:58 but the time in between was just wasted and no adding arppegiosis not gonna cut it.
By making your songs this way your listener will not get bored and will always want to stay in tune to hear what the next part will be.
Try working in contrast for example do your main lead part in a housy type style but the part before do in a rock style and slowly introduce house elments.
Sorry for rambeling hope this helps
