I have a Blue Yeti microphone that I'm trying to use to record ukulele. But for some reason it never gets that clear sound that it should have. Does anyone here knows some stuff about mixing your own recordings to make it actually sound good?

I've taken some criticism from the last few tracks I made regarding the muddy sound someone called it a while back. I'd like to know if this is an improvement over this: https://soundcloud.com/haemolacria/test-tubes

Thanks.

just finished recording the outro to this track - it's a really multi-layered kinda choral-sounding folkish song. how's my mixing/the track in general?
>>
>>71872738

A couple of things that seem to work for me -

>if record at a bit of a distance, with the microphone angled slightly towards the neck rather than straight at the sound hole. this eliminates some low frequencies.
>if recording closer, try and aim for the twelfth fret with the microphone
>once in your DAW, cut A LOT of the lows with a high pass filter and use a band boost, going through the frequencies, until you find one that makes the ukulele sound clear and bright to your liking.

Should I lower the low cut on the rhythm guitar?

It's only a rhythm guitar, a lead guitar and some unmixed drums atm. Up 4k-5k range on the lead guitar? Maybe ease the compressor a bit on the rhythm?

some lowmids on bass i guess? but i cant find the frequency

also does it feel like its lacking sub-bass? it is, comparing to teh original zep recording, which doesnt have a high pass on everything.

i am trying to get more creative with samples. so lately i have been digging around for raw recordings of every day sounds.

How should i edit a raw recording (a siren, for example) into a trap style beat so the beat still knocks? i feel like its just going to mud up my beat.

do i just high pass it and then eq around 1000-2000 til it sounds ok?

That isn't drawn manually it is 3 different clips, the middle one with the volume pulled down, and they are overlapping each other. I'm quite sure that you can't do it manually on the sound clip on reaper you have to do it with an envelope.
>>
protip, fix your vocals that you didn't know sounded bad

Whistle tones are some shit that once you notice in a vocal you'll feel retarded for not having noticed earlier.

so I offer mixing on fiverr. Someone messaged me asking if I could call a phone number, record the message and send it to them as an mp3. Is there any way that could be some kind of scam? Seems weird. The person seems like a real person; they gave a bunch of positive reviews to other mixing people. I'm just starting out on fiverr so I'd like to get some good reviews however I can.
>>
>>71874185
You can almost always eq guitars like crazy and have them still sound like guitars. So yes, cut more low-end. Also on the kick add some high-end for the click of the drum pedal

>>71873106
I'd say once the bass synth kicks in, filter off the low end from your other synths

>>
Hey guys plz tell me this have potential or meh ?
https://clyp.it/btdwmoyv
>>
>>71883523
reaper is fine, there is nothing wrong with it at all. People talk shit about reaper to justify spending $700 on something they could've got for free, or because they are so stupid they think they got $700 worth of value for free by torrenting ableton.

I haven't used pro tools in like 10 years and I barely remember it but apparently it is pretty obsolete now except that a lot of industry folk still use it because it used to be standard. reaper should be better for your needs.
>>
>>71883582
it has potential, bring out the guitar more, and develop that melody hombre, the only thing pushing it forward musically is the bass/beat.
>>
>>71883656
Ye just a quick melody poped to me so decided to go with it gonna work on it some more.
The guitar thing i just dont know how much is enought you know afraid would be too loud
how would you say the mix is in general ?
Thx for the feedback man
>>
>>71883651
does it have less resources and stuff compared to paid daws
>>
>>71883750
I like the mix, it done well, the guitar itself is really quiet and unless your looking for its easily missed, which is okay becuase your using for harmony/rhythm versus as until. bump it up a few decibals making slightly lower than the melody, I would put it at a mf but idk how that translates to your software
>>
>>71883750
>>71883873
before you hit 20 sec and when you hit 30 sec the guitar should be bump up
>>
>>71883821
Well technically it is a paid DAW, it just costs 10x less than the others and they let you keep using it regardless of whether or not you pay. It has all the tools you need like EQs, compressors, sampler and so on, it just doesn't come with samples or instruments. Everyone uses torrented third party plugins anyway though no matter which DAW they have so it makes no difference really.
>>
>>71883821
it's a paid daw and it's pretty much as full featured as anything comes out of the box
>>
>>71883873
>>71883894

>>
>>71884220
i disagree on the "gayness" of it, but the concept is kinda overused with a step up keychange, why dont you try changing key to the last melody note unless its the tonic, after you do a fade. Might be better

nah its actually a good change, guitar fits better, but as for it being too high try switiching to to D. A major souns okay to me, but im probably a scrub
>>71884684
I mean thats a loaded question. Thoery helps you understand WHY something sounds awesome and gives you a way to replicate it. Good composers steal from others, untill they can make it thier own. Does it help you make a sick beat? that more of something intuitive, but studying scores and "actively" listen helps immensely as well as joining music groups

this is all samples off of Finale, its the only software i use becuase it what i need. And as for Dance, its not supposed to "sad" in the dark way, I wanted to give it a light touch of melancholy in the begining before switching it to the dominant major (peice starts in Dm -> AM -> EM

>>71885701
Hmm I suspect you're doing something wrong no offence. Should just be a case of installing Amplitube, loading it up in your DAW, then it'll prompt for a serial number which you generate using the keygen.

Also its not enough for your computer to be 64 bit, it specifically needs the 64 bit version of whatever DAW you're using. 32 bit and 64 bit VSTs are annoyingly not cross compatible.

audionews.org is the best torrent site for production stuff, its got pretty much everything. Registration only opens a couple of days a month though, I think on the 1st or 2nd of the month.

read the manual and take the included lessons in help view its one of the best features in ableton imo no other daw has included tutorials how live does
>>
Hey /theory/bros I have this annoying habit of writing riffs or short passages and then being clueless about how to expand it and arrange it into a full composition. For example:
https://clyp.it/xrclgshy

It sounds like it belongs in the middle of a song right? So I try to write an intro and smash it in front of it but it always sounds jarring and bad. Maybe because I've listened to the initial part too much. Idk just venting I succ at writing music lmao

Also I know the mix is garbage pls halp
>>
>>71887600
some of this sounds like a pretty solid singer and some of this sounds like you are completely tonedeaf, don;t just stick on one note, push your self
>>
>>71888577
Its great, too much really for daw stuff, too many mouse clicks I actually felt sorry for you while listening.

My form opinion: From .44-1.22 should be the end section. The start should be variations or just repetitions of 1.22 onwards and up to .44. You should get 3.30 to 4 minutes out of that, and make slight variations on the repetitions.
>>
>>71888983
Thanks brush. Will try out your suggestions next session. Also by "mouse clicks" do you mean pops? Everything is super messy I know, just tryna lay down ideas
>>
>>71872429
I can't stop watching this gif...
>>
>>71889293
No just laying out the complex drums and guitar parts, must have been so much work, I think that genre is better suited for live players than creating it in a daw. Some of the speedy passages do sound a little robotic if you're in ableton you can use the groove pool to loosen them up a tiny amount. Its good when the instruments don't all land on a beat together. Gives it more life.
>>
>>71889880
Ohh guitar and bass is actually live lol. And believe me, mouse clicking drums is way easier and cheaper than finding, micing, and recording a real drummer
>>
>>71889934
Yeah I'm surprised, you never know with kontakt guitars these days.
>>
>>71874185
Double track the guitar. Fill the low end with bass. Too much low end on guitar never sounds good. I always cut everything below 80 hz and boost at 160 and 4.5k.
>>
What should I do to make this better? It's an ongoing project.

https://clyp.it/itpv3ef0

I'm thinking about adding vocals.
>>
>>71887256
I really like that stuff! The first clip is very Radiohead-esque. The vocals in the second clip sound really J-Mascis like.
>>
Should I learn a new instrument or try to get better at guitar? I can play chords and songs and such but I don't really know any theory and I don't know if I would be better off just learning a new instrument or trying to correct my bad musical education. If I should learn a new instrument, which should I learn?

Parallel octaves are bad. Every old composer would be looking down at you from heaven with their hands covering their ears saying stop it.

Generally pretty boring I have to say. You need another line that sounds independent, maybe an organic type sound. The mix is ok, maybe the kick lacks low bass or maybe you like it how it is now.

Daily reminder to NEVER EVER show your music to friends who aren't musicians themselves. Everyone thinks of themselves as music critics, even people who with surface level tastes who have never touched an instrument in their lives. This advice applies doubly if you make even slightly experimental music.

I once had someone ask me to show me a few of my songs, and he had the audacity to fucking critique the progression of the songs, then he proceded to rate each one.

Someone else once told me my songs had shitty rhythm, when I play drums in a freaking jazz band. He then jokily tried to mimick the vocal samples in the song.

Yeah, I'm fucking butthurt.

I have a co-worker that frequently shows me his 'music'. His stuff is godawful. Rhythm problems, uses shitty default VSTs, progressions make no sense, and generally uninspired and boring pieces. He's sent me a song every week or so for a year. No improvement.

Thing is, being a musician allows me to be more brutally honest about the shittiness of his songs. Literally I'm like "yea the rhythm is off here" and he's like "uhh i don't notice it i think it's ok". Then I go "yeah this progression never resolves and the melody clashes with the chords" and he's like "yeah but how do I use massive tho". This is after he has spent thousands on online music courses from Berklee lmao.

At least if you show your shit to non-musicians you can get the pleb take--how your music would be received by the general public if you were to put your stuff out there. Hey but learn to take advice, even from people you think are 'below' you.
>>
>>71894674
It feels they're being so audacious and they don't even realise. You've put a month into a track and they're walking in and saying 'you should make that bit higher,' as if you're making the track for them

question

how do i finish my first track? I quickly get bored of the music that i make and lose inspiration to keep going. the farthest i've gone is about 32 loops.

does anyone have any tips for finishing your first track and becoming a better producer?
>>
>>71908543
Yeah, remake like 10 of your favorite songs from start to finish, that should give you perspective.
>>
>>71908582
completely the same?
if that is what you did, how did going through an arduous process affect your workflow?
>>
>>71908645
You have to think of it like that.
If you take a track you already know that you love/like that eliminates the question of "fuck what am I making" which is what makes you give up while in the process.
Then it's all about finding your workflow and getting real comfortable with the whole production aspect while trying to remake something you like completely the same. Production is an arduous process by itself a lot of times so that should help you find your workflow and pick up your rhythm.
>>
>>71908543
try making more variants by copying loops and then shifting or removing notes then start with the less complex ones and make them more complex as the song progresses.

arpeggiators can help. run one on some patterns and see if anything clicks.

Shit, posted the wrong version. This version starts at about 0:38 but you can really hear how good the plucked string synth sounds at 0:50. Is that the type of sound you were looking for?

hehehe

i like it senpai

this is great. super nostalgic. i could see two ways you could take this and make it more than just a recreation of old styles of cheese. one is that you could do something like burial does in nightmarket - take this sort of thing but make it more like looking back on it through a lens, if that makes sense. then it would be amazing. or go breakcore style and make it totally insane.

i'm actually decent at mixing and sound design, however, i'm shit at keeping a song coherent, I go off on tangents too much. I usually make more experimental music but I realize that If I wanna get better I need to write more catchy music. Also, I'm pretty shit at sampling
>>
>>71912268
You have to hear the music in your head first.
>>
>>71912329
I don't hear it in my head though
