The point of these threads is to critically analyse musical traditions from all over the world, including the western pop canon, and perform discourse on the topic. This discourse shapes what is allowed to be discussed and who is allowed to take part. As a shibboleth against lowbrows, the highest caliber of dank memes is used as communication. By doing this, we can create a utopia for true music lovers and colonise the planet, solar system, and galaxy. Every single utterance here is broadcast wirelessly, somewhere, some time, and will as such be launched into the infinity of thoughts.

If you go back and listen to the lyrics, they're actually quite strange - almost nonsensical at times. The whole album is filled with 70s slang because of the disco theme going on.

It's weird, you don't really notice at first because the production is so stellar and the MCs pull off the style so well. It's one of my favorite hip-hop albums because of that

The Radio Dept. - Lesser Matters (2003)
>dream pop, indie pop

Pretty charming little record, not a sour note on it but a bit too much like a lesser version of all the bands that inspired it. Their sound isn't all too hot, they try and go for a lo-fi thing but it's really obvious that it was an aesthetic choice and it does little more than muddle the melodies, which are the album's strong suit. The melodies are catchy and really pretty, and I think that better, less self-conscious production would help them stand out more. Even with the bad production and the derivative sound, it's a fine album.

Cloudkicker - Let Yourself Be Huge (2011)
>post-rock

This so obviously sounds like it was done by a prog metal musician, it's kinda funny. It's similary self-indulgent and emotionless, but it's packaged in a way that's a lot more appealing to me, so I can't say I really hate this. It's pretty at times and the guitar work is great, but it still falls into so many trappings of both post-rock and prog metal that I despise, and it's overall a really understated listen, and not in a good way. It lacks the things I like about post-rock, but it's a decently pretty take on the genre.

heres what we're gonna do now: we're gonna take some random voice sample and loop it, then loop some electronic sound over it, and then we add some drums to it. that was p much most of the album, and they're not even interesting voice samples or electronic sounds or drums. it hasn't dated well (and it's from the 80s? this is something i'd expect from the early 60s) and it has zero replay value. blue marine was a fun track though.

>Xiu Xiu - Plays the Music of Twin Peaks
I haven't dug into Xiu Xiu's works much other than his first couple of albums, but I wasn't expecting that sound going into this. Regardless, I still wasn't sure what to expect from this album, and I was pleasantly surprised. This album has some seriously beautiful ambient and noise tracks on it. My favorite parts have to be the melancholic piano/synths on Laura Palmer's Theme and Love Theme Farewell. Falling is also an excellent, emotion filled song. This may not be A Promise, but it's still very good!

>eX-Girl - Endangered Species
this was a pretty interesting experimental/space rock album. while it was pretty good overall, not many moments really stuck out to me, other than the electronics on Pujeva, which I wasn't a huge fan of. i dont have much to say about this, other than it was decent.

I have the chart for post-2000 prog essentials saved, but does anyone know any great 80s-90s prog rock bands? Genre fusions are fine, too.

I've heard quite a few good ones from the 70s, but the 80s seemed like an extremely rough patch for it. I wasted so much time listening to so many clunkers, the only two groups that stood out to me and remained solid into the 90s were Djam Karet and Ozric Tentacles. Symphonic-Prog has burned me a bunch of times too, expecting long jams only to get really slow, drawn out and dull "classical" pieces that have some prog in them. I like mine more straight to the point, like with Dixie Dregs, Focus, and MacKenzie Theory. So yeah, 90s prog, please. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Quick review bump.

Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
>Alt-Rock, Post-Punk

Pretty solid indie rock with a very big post-punk influence. There’s kind of jolty, noisy guitar work all over the release. It sounds like a weird crossover between 80s and 90s rock influences, with crunchy guitar and anxious vocals. The lyrics are surprisingly dark but I guess that matches that bizarre cover. When this is great - it’s amazing. The first two tracks, especially “Yes” are exactly what I like to hear in this brand of indie rock. And the last two cuts are quite enjoyable as well. The rest is pretty normal, albeit enjoyable stuff as far as indie rock goes. I couldn’t help but feel this is too hit or miss but this brand of rock tends to grown on me.

3/5

Death - Symbolic
>Death Metal

A bit heavier than I’m used to in music in general but holy shit this is good. These guys go all out, with intense, almost growling vocals, slow churning guitar riffs and dark lyrics. There’s a definite prog influence as well, as these guys go through some impressive passages with longer solos and multiple shifts in rhythm (I’m never sure how to say that). It’s kind of like a blend of thrash and more slow-burning doom kind of metal. They go through punky passages and churn into these dramatic, drifting sections where they use the Spanish guitar, low bass and less vocals. It’s a nice mix of the styles I’ve heard in metal so far, with way more serious vocals thrown in the mix.

I’m not sure how to write about metal but this was much better and much less intimidating than I was expecting, considering the genre tags. Maybe a bit much at times but very enjoyable.

Triggered. Spirit of Eden is one of the most sparse yet melodically beautiful albums I've listened to and one of the few that actually elicits and emotional response from me. The vocals are a huge part but that fucking harmonica gets me every time. Plus it practically invented post-rock (though you could argue whether that's a good thing or not).

Oh shit, what a nice surprise this album is. The cover and the jazz-fusion label had me concerned, but so far they're doing a great job at making prog rock and jazz-fusion gel together. Nothing overblown, just the meat and potatoes of everything that makes prog rock fun to listen to.

I must find their '92 cassette album after this, even Soulseek doesn't have it.

>gay edition
FUN FACT: there's a tiny cluster of cells in the anterior hypothalamus, INAH-3, which is larger in heterosexual males than in females and homosexual males, regardless of which age you observe it at. This suggests that people are born homosexual, or at the very least with a predisposition toward homosexuality. Further evidence for this is that homosexuality is fairly evenly distributed in all populations, regardless of culture, meaning that it is not socially restricted or developed. It seems likely that homosexuality is predominantly biologically determined.

Obviously on an individual level it's disadvantageous, since it reduces your chances of producing offspring. However, it could perhaps be argued that it's advantageous on a societal group level - feminine males that can care for offspring could help with the group's survival.

round one is done! 5/6 bets failed, sadly.

for round two, the under 50 minutes rule is still in place. the restriction for this one is an album by an artist I've already listened to. it can be literally any artist I've rated here, so have fun searching.
https://rateyourmusic.com/~yamir

BUT BEFORE YOU RECOMMEND AN ALBUM, there's a special twist going on! Shamepai, the person who rec'd my favorite album from round one, gets a bonus item! he gets to add an extra restriction on top of the current ones to any one of the other players (except the one he's up against)! shame, you can use this to handicap a trip you're scared can defeat you in the future or help out a friend who bribed you to use it on their opponent. it can't be a very harsh restriction, though, and i will make sure of that.

>some dumb cunt (hungary / romania)
>Sofia Gubaidulina - Seven Words; Silenzio; In Croce
seven words: those were some really beautiful classical performances
another seven words: sadly shamepai's memey jazz album was better

8- , so sad you had to be put up against the other 8/10 album on the chart

>transgod (Germany / france)
>blut aus nord - memoria vetusta II
atmospheric black metal is not my thing at all, i dont like a lot of the memey bm subgenres (except whatever liturgy is) but luckily there isn't too much "atmospheric" in this album. i like how great the riffs are and that the guitars don't turn into complete noise or some dumb lo-fi thing. it's a lot more melodic than your average bm stuff which was a nice touch, so glad this didn't turn out to be some lame ass deathspell omega type thing.

細野晴臣 / 鈴木茂 / 山下達郎 - Pacific (1978)
>city pop

Supremely chill and happy album. City pop is a genre that practically exists to be calculated to pop perfection, and if they haven't achieved pop perfection here I don't know what they've achieved. Hosono's tracks are generally my favorite, because the synth work on them is extraordinary and I really like when this album takes on a more electronic sound. Yamashita's epic "ノスタルジア・オブ・アイランド" is probably the best track here, but Hosono is the most consistently good player here. Cheesy as shit of course, and a few tracks are total Beach Boys ripoffs, but solid and really enjoyable nonetheless

Standard Sabbath worship stuff. All the components here are nice (save for the vocals) but the songwriting is lacking in both the power and sinisterness I always love to see in doom metal. The whole EP seems regrettably thin-sounding and weak, which is a shame because there are definitely some good doom riffs buried under the stereotypical heavy metal exterior.

Big Joe Williams - Going Back to Crawford (1999)
>delta blues, country blues

Really nice, super underrated blues comp. Williams' unique guitar playing is the album's best aspect. He was famous for his 9-string guitar, which has an incredibly resonant tone that makes even the more upbeat tracks seem foreboding and ghostly. His voice is great as well, as are the voices of the other performers on this record. Sometimes the songwriting leaves a bit to be desired, it goes into your typical twelve-bar blues more often than I'd like, and there's a pretty decent drop in quality as the comp goes on, and as the tracks get newer (I believe, don't take my word that). A great comp that has some issues with consistency.

Balalaika Favs didn't hold up after repeated listens. But is still good.

Gamelan was good too, but the lack of tonal variety hurts it. Some more unpitched percussion would have helped this, I think. Or maybe vocals? It needed something. Is a rhythmic wonderland, however. Quite nice. The ending sections of the first track was bliss, and what I am talking about with "More unpitched percussion would have helped." as what I believe are hand drums play a larger roll here and it works very well.

And with that, Fish Week is done-zo! the next tortsament begins! Except I totally didn't save the stuff I had for it and it is way back in the archive so uh...

uh...

Hey look brand new, fresh tortsament! totally not me fucking up and needing to re-construct the one I totally didn't not save! First come first serve. Must rec, no reservations.

After hours and hours of suffering through shitty 90s prog, along with some heavier sounding groups that didn't gel well with me (The Fall of Troy), I finally hit upon An Endless Sporadic. Great shit! Liked every single track on their EP, their first album, and their second album. They're good at having a big powerful sound without it becoming too corny, and there's enough interesting textures and ideas like with the chiptunes and then the horns in that one track that made Magic Machine entertaining.

I'd heard about Mars Volta from time to time, but I only listened to them very early in the morning. Their first album, only liked two tracks, but that added up to be like one third of the album's length so I guess that's not so bad.

So the plan is to listen to more Mars Volta and also return to Boris (already heard Pink). I liked some The Fall of Troy's musical ideas, but can't stand their vocals. But I'll give them another chance and listen to their second album.

Well yeah man, some days are like that. But I try to be patient because sometimes I'll listen to an entire album and be bored but then there's one track I'll listen to at least twice and thought was okay, so I'll jot it down. This was definitely one of the worst days for me, but now I feel like I have a better footing and will know where to go from here to find some good prog that's not from the 70s. Endless Sporadic was the best catharsis after hearing the dumpster fire that was Mudvayne.

Just gotta keep up the grind, it's how you find great music.

The Beta Band - The Three E.P.’s (1998)
>Indie Rock, Trip-Hop, Neo-Psychedelia

Simple, mostly cheery, British indie rock tunes that heavily rely on their excellent, trance-inducing rhythms. (Occasionally the rhythms are so overwhelmingly the focus that the songs begin to resemble something like trip-hop [“B+A”] or even dub [parts of “The Monolith”] more than indie rock.) The softly whispered and low-mixed vocals compliment the rhythms and heavenly strumming. Meanwhile, little odd bits of ornamental electronica percolate about the tracks.

This is literally every track. Mileage, drum/bass prominence, psychedelic overtones, and repetitiveness may vary. “The Monolith” is an obvious red flag, pointlessly dragging on for 15 minutes—but otherwise, the songs here continuously indulge in cool experiments while remaining satisfying cohesive as a whole. There’s also this weird thing where they play field recordings of birds chirping every so often.
>7+/10

Thundercat - The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam (2015)
>Funk, Neo-Soul, Alternative R&B

Thundercat, on this very brief EP (six songs, 16 minutes), functions in what I see as three parts: an intro, the single, and an extended weirdness/outro. The single, “Them Changes”, is one of the catchiest, grooviest neo-soul pop songs I have ever heard. Every second of that song is basically perfect. The rest is fantastic, if a lot subtler and more passive, jazz-funk fusion (“Lone Wolf and Cub” features Herbie Hancock, which is cool).

XXXTENTACION - ItWasntEnough (2016)
>Cloud Rap, Trap Rap, Soundcloud Shit

I’ve recently been a huge fan of “#ImSippinTeaInYoHood” and obviously “Look at Me”, so I figured I’d check out a few of X’s EPs, now that he’s out of jail and hopefully making new music.

The production here is the usual high-quality overblown bullshit (producers Grimmdoza and Cudda), most stereotypical on the third track, a bit of a slow-tempo bass-buster, “I LUv My CLiQuE LiKe KaNyE WeSt.” The first track is actually a relatively delicate (you can actually see the waveform on Soundcloud, it’s not a just a brick, guys!) piano ballad of sorts with mumbled lyrics and wacky echoing production. The second track, “01 MANIKIN” is kind of weak cloud rap with a trap beat, with some other rapper, Wifisfuneral, stealing the first verse while X makes sex noises in the background (???).

Not a fantastic release, but it’s a great example of the vaguely experimental nature of these soundcloud releases, outsider vibe to boot. Honestly I probably won’t return to this though.
>5+/10

XXXTENTACION - Willy Wonka Was a Child Murderer (2016)
>Post-hardcore, Emo, Lo-fi

In an odd misstep outside his own sphere of influence, X takes a stab at lo-fi indie rock, post-hardcore, and emo. The first song is not that terrible—it has a lazy, groovy bass line and beat, and virtually unintelligibly fuzzy vocals—but it really doesn’t go anywhere. “King”, though, is hilariously awful. It tries for post-hardcore and screamo, but fails miserably at both. The production aesthetic does not work here at all. Nor does it work for the similarly-styled title track. The closer, “Never” is the weirdest thing here, again with piano balladry (and guitar noodling), but also with X trying to do a deep, gravelly speaking voice, tandem with nearly laughable reverbed and echoey moaning.

Again, love the oddball ethos, but the execution here is laughably bad.

Kinoko Teikoku - ロンググッドバ (2013)
>Noise Pop, Shoegaze

Simple, dreamy, Japanese noise pop and shoegaze. Track two—with a searing intro, sing-song verses, and a nearly post-rock build to a noisy finish—is one of my favorites. A similar approach of alternating between sing-song simplicity and noise pop excess can be found on a few others tracks. The seven-minute track four is the slowest one of the bunch, and incorporates some cool backmasking and musique concrète-sounding effects. The tremendous finish is great too.

As with a lot of modern shoegaze, it’s really hard to qualify what keeps me from loving this stuff more. It checks all the boxes for an engaging release. (And that phrasing isn’t great either—it makes the issue more obvious than it is I think.) To pull from two RYM reviews: I’m in agreement with “Kinda uninspired heavy shoegaze sound with a cute female singer” and somewhat puzzled by “more promising material from what has become Japan’s premier shoegaze group”.
>6/10

Jorge - True Friendship (2017)
>Ambient, Plunderphonics, Hypnagogic Pop

Piano and synth swell-styled ambient with lots of cool musique concrète/plunderphonic moments. There’s really an air of depressive, solemn, beauty here—it’s actually positively Satie-esque. Even the new age tracks manage to accomplish something interesting most of the time. Take “Let Me Go Limp”, which randomly introduces a string quartet and glitzy new age sparkling sound effects, eventually warps itself to a state of dementedness that would make Leyland Kirby proud.

It’s a really emotional album, and quick too, at only 20 minutes. Thanks for the second-hand rec, nat.

The Electric Prunes - The Electric Prunes (1967)
>Psychedelic Rock, Garage Rock, Baroque Pop

These guys probably had a big influence on The Fleshtones actually. The lead single, “I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)” is really cool, with a crazy rhythm, wild vocals, and cool psychedelic effects—altogether great songwriting. The rest is usually not nearly as good, but fine enough I suppose. They do the psych/garage rock thing pretty lamely, tinged with baroque pop ornaments. The closer, the grossly cartoonish, “The Toonerville Trolly” makes comparable songs like “Ob-la-di Ob-la-da” sound positively normal.

The fundamental issue I have with this album is that there are plenty of bands that do the exact same schtick better. The stereo mixing job is really awful too.
>5+/10

The Electric Prunes - Underground (1967)
>Psychedelic Rock, Garage Rock

Much better. Occasionally still kitschy, but overall much harder and much more psychedelic. Stereo mixing is still shit though. I really need to get my hands on the mono mix.
>6+/10

Jay Som - Everybody Works (2017)
>Indie Rock, Dream Pop

A remarkably well-produced indie rock and dream pop album. The production is actually so prevalent, and so expertly-manipulated, that it’s almost distracting—like on “The Bus Song” where the quality of the vocals and the texture of the instruments are just constantly in flux, from bedroom pop, to 90s Cranberries-esque indie pop, to 2000s soft pop, to airy dream pop, and back again, on a dime. A lot of songs here suffer a similarly puzzling fate. It’s obviously a conscious choice by Melina Duterte, the only credited artist...

Not to say the songs aren’t catchy. The songwriting is generally quite good. There are a bunch of cool moments all over the album, and the bass and drum sounds are consistently killer, giving the songs a lot of life. A few songs feel very out of place, though.

would probably rate it 7+, tracks 1 (!!) and 5 (!!!) were amazing. i really liked track 6 as well. the rest was pretty consistent with no bad tracks, but were not nearly as good as those few. the vocalist is great, I love her voice. as a whole i don't feel like the band sounds too much like 'generic shoegaze' (on this release at least), as someone who has subjected themselves to a ridiculous amount of mediocre releases from the genre, but i would also classify this more under indie rock/pop than shoegaze

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out (1959)
>cool jazz

Cool jazz at its coolest and most loungey. For how compositionally complex it really is, especially when the tracks fuck around more with time signatures, the album's major gimmick, it's just not terribly interesting music, especially compared with all the other jazz that was coming out in 1959. All the tracks blend together as a result of this, but I can't overlook how darned pleasant and flat-out effortlessly cool this is. The poppy melodies are glorious, and the album's best aspect, and the interplay between every instrumentalist is on point. I feel incredibly mixed about this, it's a really tame album with little high points that manages to stay consistently enjoyable and pleasant.

2.5+

Brian Eno - Ambient 1: Music for Airports (1978)
>ambient

Eno is probably one of the world's greatest living musicians and producers. His solo works are incredibly impressive and enjoyable, showing his skill as a songwriter, producer, and an instrumentalist, and he always manages to bring a very crisp sound to every artist he produces, giving himself enough influence to make the final product something distinguishably Eno while still giving the artist enough free rein to make something original. This is bland, easy-listening muzak. I know that's the point, and I'm definitely not listening to this album in its intended context, but so many other artists make much more engaging, emotional ambient. The album is pleasant enough, sure, and the last track is quite nice, but it's wholly, completely unengaging and unobtrusive.

Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane
>East Coast Hip-Hop, Boom Bap
This record has got some damn hard hitting drums and great jazzy samples. Kane's flow is really awesome and he's got some killer punch lines in there.
However this release is a bit spotty. It's got a few really catchy, funky stand out numbers and the rest is mostly just kinda average.
Ain't No Half-Steppin, Raw and Set it Off are all fucking bomb ass tracks with amazing hooks.
Maybe it's something about what samples they used but the rest of the tracks, while good, just don't reach that level of groove-ability.

the main difference between

is simply that the DDC :) harsh up the mid-high frequencies and pretty much neglect the bass which makes it sound ear-piercing and weak, but the general approach is exactly the same

Oh, guess I should check out some of their other stuff then. The shoegaze bits were a bit of a tactical insertion. It felt like they just kind of arrived at the shoegaze portions of the song—not like they were trying to write shoegaze tunes or whatever, which I think is admirable. I would agree tho, they tend to exhibit mostly the tropes of noise pop and indie rock

Herbie Hancock - Sextant (1973)
>jazz fusion

Absolutely goddamn insane album. There's really no other way to describe it than "insane". Most of Hancock's work is pretty light and unobtrusive, but this is among the most crazy, off-the-wall fusion I've ever heard. It basically consists of Hancock and his band throwing anything they can find at the wall and seeing what sticks, and somehow nearly everything does. It's occasionally a tad too cluttered, but remarkably enough every instrument can pretty much get a chance to breathe, even when some instruments are definitely given priority. "Rain Dance", whacked-out synthesizers and all, is the best track album, and it could probably work it's way into becoming one of my favorite songs ever. Nearly every second of it is perfect, and the first minute or so especially when the synth bleeps and bloops just fucking crash into a jazzy crescendo is especially amazing. The other two tracks aren't /that/ good, but they're still really fucking good, especially "Hornets", spiritual vibes and insane drumming and all. Hancock is a goddamn enigma, and god, he's really incredible.

these are the contenders. Themes this year for soundcloud rappers are: overblown production, more mumble-rapping, faux-emo lyrics, iconic face tattoos, even wackier hair, and unironic basic anime fanboying

and I saw that BIA lady open for Gucci Mane, and she was honestly way better than he was, so I hope she gets on the list. Also, fun fact: I have the exact same birth date as Ugly God, so it's mildly depressing that he's getting interviewed by Nardwuar already

Death Grips - Interview 2016 (2016)
>industrial hip hop, instrumental hip hop, glitch hop

The worst thing is when an album meant to be instrumental feels like it's aching for vocals. This EP is exactly like that. Death Grips just feels bare without Ride's frantic, shouting vocals, and Hill and Morin aren't exactly the greatest songwriters. They're great at making cool sounds, but these cool sounds really only work when paired with vocals, when left alone they go on for far too long despite doing far too little. Not a good EP at all, really. Death Grips can do electronic production well, definitely, but this certainly isn't a great example of that, and I've always preferred them doing rock anyway.
