hi

I finished my guitar. Might wrap the whole body in black tape for looks, otherwise I'm happy with the way it looks now. For anyone who's not been following me in previous threads: I filled the middle and neck pickup cavities with shims and wood glue and sanded everything down finely, I left the body unfinished/painted because I failed 4 times to do it successfully without it turning into a DISASTER, and overall I had to sand this guitar back down to the bare wood 4 times. Days upon days of work...

It kicks ass now and I like the way the strips of tape look across the body and the old filled-in pot holes. The pickup is an EMG81.

I bought a hard case on ebay and when I opened it, one of the latches popped off.
It doesn't look like anything was snapped off or broken in half, but I couldn't reattach it without it just coming off again.

Does anyone know of a good way to fix it? Or should I just return the whole case for a replacement?

I still don't really get why you paid so much for this guitar, but the project itself was pretty cool. Rubbing some boiled linseed oil can be a nice way to improve the looks of your grain. It's totally foolproof, too. Not a real finish or anything but still looks nice.

Are all soundhole acoustic pickups the same?

I have a shit fishman single coil, and it sounds pretty good through an amp, but you hear guys like Father John who has a freaking d-28 and it sounds so thin and lifeless with whatever pickup he has on it

Could it be cause he must likely plays through a twin?

If you make the finish super thin it'll "Relic" by itself. Just buy a cheap pine body from Ebay and do it yourself.

Marketing, it's called "aspirational branding". Metal/Doom/ players are the ones most likely to spend money unnecessarily (see Emperor Cabs, EGC guitars, using complex Modeling amps for two tones, etc). Hipsterati garage rock shitbags seem to pride themselves on their gear being cheap old garbage so they're not a desirable demographic. And that's pretty much it for rock music right now, Orange isn't going after country or jazz players.

>>71882041

This is an MIJ Strat - the poly finish on this is so thick that it's almost like being covered by a cellphone case. If you ding it, it'll just crack and come off. but not in a visually pleasing way.
>>
>>71882068
That's why I recommended just buying a replacement body. You can always change it back if you need to.

Since you want a thin finish you could probably do the whole thing for under $100

Hey guys, help me out here. I've been playing punk for a few years and I don't feel like it's getting me anywhere, so I want to learn "normal" guitar (lead, blues, etc). Problem is I've developed some bad habits:

I bar all kinds of shit (ex: I bar all 3 strings of the G chord on the 2nd fret and hit the B string with a 2nd finger. I also only use 2 fingers for power chords, index for root and I bar the 2 other strings with my pinky like in the pic)

Is there really a problem with doing this, or should I re-learn everything?
>>
>>71882279
My friend Brett, my friend Brett, my friend Brett, my friend Brett, he liked to play the guitar
But he had an awkward way of playing barre chords
With two fingers spreading his index and middle fingers really far apart
One day in band practice he dropped like a deer was shot and was flipping around like a fish
He had an aneurysm triggered by a nerve in his hand from the strain he was putting on it
I went to see him in Ohio; he had a horseshoe shaped scar on his scalp and he talked real slow
We played pool like we did in our teens and his head was shaved and he still wore bell-bottomed jeans
>>
>>71881378
>BLO isn't a real finish
Try telling that to anyone who's ever finished or refinished any furniture from the last century of two.
It works just fine. It's not as weatherproof as poly, but it's plenty durable and looks nice.
>>
>>71881510
Yes.
You're changing string length, which changes string tension, which changes the tension of all the other strings too.
>>
>>71882343
An electric guitar isn't a piece of furniture though. A thin layer of oil does very little to protect a piece of wood that's coming into all sorts of contact during regular use.

Stupid loud, low gain stuff like the old Oranges and oSunns don't have a market for pop lands anymore-they're just too loud.
But the stoner metal guys love it because they can dime their amp and their tone doesn't turn into an endless stream of compressed mud. Instead it just sounds gigantic.
Plus the guys from Sleep and Sunn use them to great effect, so what you're supposed to use now, right?
Speaking of which, if I ever sold my Sceptre, I could now get 5x what I paid for it thanks to them. I bought it in the late 90s just before the prices went skyward. Some old guy had it in the back of his music store for years and sold it to me for less than $200. It sounds great, but it is just ludicrously loud.

It's more a function of he's using what is essentially an underwound Strat pickup with strings that are half non-magnetic (bronze wrappings don't affect a magnetic field, so the pickup only detects the swing of the tiny steel cores from the low strings. Hence a sound with no bass) and then running it through an electric guitar amp.
If you want to maximize detection from a magnetic soundhole pickup, it's best to use electric guitar strings on your acoustic. It still won't sound like an acoustic, but at least you'll get your bass response back.

most people play power chords with their first and ring finger, this means when you start playing other genre your pinky will be free to do other things, so i'd re learn that if i were you.

Also don't bar unnecessarily, youll be playing notes that aren't in key
>>
>>71882279
Not really a problem, but you'll want to start learning other stuff anyway just to expand your horizons. Improving your technique will help you with all aspects of your playing.

>>71882449
True, but it's better than nothing.
If he really wants an oil finish for his electric, Tung oil is probably an even better choice because it dries to a harder finish.

>>71882623
Not really what I play, but whatever.
Stay triggered.
>>
>>71882279
I would switch to using index, ring, pinky for power chords. I used barre using my ring finger like how you are using your pink and I cant imagine playing like that now.

Start learning chords that arent power chords to use more fingers and practice playing up and down the neck, just get used to moving your hand around the fret board.

Metalheads are attracted to the pointy edgy stuff and Orange products are far from that.
>>
>>71884533
>loyal
It's called the entertainment business. Emphasis on the "business". You've got to full on hump it if you want to be a musician for a living. Orange is "placing" their product and the placement can really help a struggling musician get by.

Orange started pushing really hard to set up touring metal musicians with gear and endorsements about 10 years ago. Most of the musicians you see using Orange shit do it because it's free and and Orange is an international company. This means instead of flying a cab to Japan when you tour ($$$) you just contact the "artist relations" guy when you land in Japan and they set you up with a cab to tour with while you're there. It's a huge cost saver when you're scraping by money wise touring.

Orange was looking to expand their name recognition and they did a good job doing that with all the metal bands they endorsed these last 10 years or so.

Hello /gg/, question here.

I started modding a guitar a while back. It's like a starter dean guitar. Anyways I've finally just about finished but it needs a new neck as there is a decent sized gash in the fretboard and fret. The problem is that it's a 24.75" scale, and I'm having problems finding strat style necks in that scale. Any ideas?

I know I could technically just get a new fretboard but it's really not worth that much effort.

I normally use index and pinky for power chords. It's a little awkward but doesn't really impair speed and you can also use two fingers across all strings when frethand muting. Helps avoid accidental harmonics.
>>
>>71883390
I can finger A/B/C/D/E/F/G pretty well (despite barring strings on A and D). I mostly started using my pinky for situations where I need to go

4 > 3
6 > 6
6 > 6

...and couldn't stretch that far unless I used my pinky on the higher strings. I mostly became alarmed when I started watching Justin's BEGINNER training videos and he does the A/D chords the proper way, and I freaked the fuck out thinking that my whole shit is wrong.

Anyway, I really really really need to figure out how to do proper string bends (the doorknob pivot deal) so I can get a halfway decent vibrato (can't vibrato for shit now). I keep hitting the strings above when I do a bend. Either that or I accidentally pluck them with my fingernail when I release. There are a million videos on how to bend strings, but NONE seem to address the issue I'm having. Am I just a retard and not enough people have this problem to warrant a video?

Dunno if it matters or not but I just bought an Ibanez S520 (been playing on a g-400 and a Squier for my whole punk career) and plan on practicing with that for my improvement. My goal? To be able to play buttrock.
>>
>>71881927
Learn how to play guitar first, then worry about how it looks
>>
>>71885010
Not that I have to explain but for your benefit:

My little sister, being like every other girl, had a phase where she wanted to learn guitar. Uncle buys her this and she gives up almost immediately. So I decided to trick it out.

Also, what does the model matter if I gut everything and replace it?

Let me see what you're building homie
>>
>>71884808
Take a pic of the gash, you might just be able to replace the fret
>>
>>71884808
Well, even if you get a 24.75 neck there's a good chance you might need to move the bridge a smidge. So you might just go for a 25.5 and move the bridge back. Also, can you post a pic of the neck damage? Just curious.

They're ridiculously expensive due to being "handmade" (with the occasional quality issues that come along with that) and are not the end-all, be-all of tone that the fanboy trolls say. But they're not bad. Some of them are even very, very good.
They are just incredibly expensive for not much more playability or tone than a midrange guitar.

What's up?

I have a question.

I have been researching guitars for a minute and I am not entirely satisfied with what I have found to be available.

I am in the market for a 7 string.

I do not want the body to be made of ash, basswood, alder, or mahogany.

I do not want the fretboard to be made of maple, ebony or rosewood.

I do not want the neck to be made out of maple.

The neck I like is the wizard 7, 11 piece maple wenge bubinga purpleheart neck on the ibanez rg 1027pdf model. It also has a lovely wenge fretboard.

But I don't want basswood. And I don't know how I feel about the tight end bridge. It looks funny.

What are my options? Why is it impossible to find a dealer, zzounds, sweetwater, guitar center, that lets me filter by wood? Is that really too much to ask? Drummers get that option.

I don't have a body shape or company preference that I know of. I just want the woods to be right and I don't like fret dots on the 1st fret. I also don't like 3 strings on one side and 4 on the other. All 7 must be on one side.

Bridge can be either no spring, springs, i can enjoy whatever.
>>
>>71886658
I suggest you to stop being a contrarian cunt cause the woods don't matter
>>
>>71886658
I prefer no paint on my wooden guitar. Right handed. Pickups can be whatever. High end pickups sound good no matter what from my experience. DimarZio Seymour Duncan EmG it don't matter. I trust the company.

I know this might be a lot, but I worked hard for my money and I ain't gonna spend it on BS. My price range is nonexistent. If it's what I want, I'll save up for it and buy it if I don't already have enough.

Please and thank you for any help with my journey.

There are pros and cons about all types of bridges. I could enjoy a floating bridge, a bridge like a strat, or a bridge like an acoustic. It don't matter. If all the other specs are 100% and it only comes down to the bridge, I wouldn't care.

Because words mean things, and we'd rather not have to believe that you have no idea what you're talking about.

If you're going to throw away thousands of dollars trying to chase your dream, that's on you. But some of us would like to know that YOU know just what the hell you're getting yourself into, and aren't just throwing your money down a hole.

For instance, a bridge is a vital part of a guitar, and any player who's played a lot will usually have clear opinions of what he likes and doesn't. That you don't-and don't even know the names of various types-is troubling. It makes people think you don't know what you're doing.
Same with the pickups and other functional components. You don't have an opinion, and aren't even interested. That's a subject which a real guitarist would have an opinion, and an informed one at that.
That leads me to believe that you are about to spend vast sums of money building a guitar with no regard to how it actually functions as a guitar.

While it is your money and you are certainly free to do that, your money would be much better spent on lessons and a more standard guitar to learn on. When you can get the ability to play a guitar competently, then the guitar of your dreams will start to take a much clearer form.

I've spent literally at least 50 hours trying to learn guitar during my free-time and still none of my fingers are remotely flexible or strong in the slightest. I can't even transition between the simplest of chords without a several second pause in between. All I want is to just play and write the simplest music, shit like Empire Empire but I can't even do that. I'm so unnaturally bad at this, should I just give up bros?
>>
>>71888269
Just play
>>
>>71888269
Pirate disks 1,2,3 of metal method and do them. Take about a month per disk and you will be at a point where you can play most black sabbath (not the solos), any punk, and a lot of intermediate music. Then keep playing and learn as much as you can about theory. Just dont stop doing exercises.

The guy in the vid is a total tool, that is every stereotype of hair metal- but his DVDs fucking work.
>>
>>71888102
Can't copyright chords or progressions. Those are considered part of music theory and as such are in the public domain.
Any melodies, however ARE subject to copyright, and I suggest you protect the fuck out of them if you are at all smart.

Also, the little extra thing you are doing with the C chord turns it into a C2, aka Cadd9.

>>
>>71888269
So in other words, you're halfway to the point I was when I could start to be confident in my form and chord changes.

Great, you've only got 70 more hours of practice to go! Better get to it, anon.
>>
>>71888406
You reminded me of when I was learning the basics. Guitar hero and rockband were big and my friends were spending literal days and playing the games. >>
>>71888456

I'm a good bit older than that. Patience was a current release, and it may've been one of the first songs I connected chords together on. It was definitely the first solo I learned. The chord change also might have been on Every Rose by Poison, though...too remote to tell at this point. You made a good choice learning music instead of video gaem moosik, anon. We'd be so much further along musically if Hero never existed...
>>
>>71888269
That's ok.
Focus on the absolute basics right now-holding the guitar properly, holding the pick properly, being able to tune your guitar, making sure your fretting hand is positioned so your fingers can move freely, not death-gripping the neck, pressing lightly onto the strings, making sure all of the notes on the chords sound out properly, transitioning between chords, where all of the notes are on the fretboard, and how to play barre chords.
It sounds like a lot, and it is for right now, but all of that stuff is fundamental to good form, so drill it early and often.

Learning good form now at the beginning keeps you progressing-you don't fall into any bad habits that limit you.

>>
>>71889353
No he's not.

The sad truth is that most people's "new and original" shit isn't good. At all. Because THEY don't know THEIR shit. Instead they try to be like the new post-modern philosopher who's going to show all the plebs that everything they believe is wrong, and all he ends up doing is being the asshole who tears down stuff with neither plan nor ability to put it together into anything anybody wants to buy.

I'm not saying you have to be all hidebound to 100+ year old music and only slavishly repeat what came before, but you should at least be conversant in the forms. The old blues, country and rock and roll forms were dance music-they had a beat, a regular form and progressions that were easy so people could dance to them and musicians could play them without losing the beat. Even now when you play them that way, people want to get up and dance to them because they're fun.
Though we've progressed as far as the complexity and technical ability of the music is concerned, there's also something that we've lost in the process, and it's this notion that music is a communal thing
That's something that we've lost from popular music lately. It's a shame, and id even go so far as to call it unnatural. From time immemorial, people would get together, dance the night away to music with a beat, get drunk with friends and fuck each other's

...Brains out.
It may not seem profound, but it's human nature to want to do that, and "new music" as currently defined is not providing that today. That's one thing we can learn from the old forms-ways to satisfy that primal human desire, and I believe we must learn it if we are to be successful musicians.

I'm trying to get into playing jazz and i have a problem

I already learned major minor and minor harmonic scales, i know the modes i know the blues scale and major and minor pentatonic scales.

I know triads both minor and major

and i know all maj7 7 m7 and m7b5 chords.

But i'm trying to learn how to jam jazz and i find out that i also need to know things like m9 mi9 mi 6 and 9#5...

if i want to play jazz, do i have to learn by heart the 5 position of every chord in existence (pic related) ?

i don't understand how a human mind can even store that amount of knowledge much less access it and use it quickly.

Any tips for this?

I've been playing jazz for about three years, I played classical for about ten years before, been to some competitions and even won in some, I've been in some jazz festivals also, so I have some idea what I'm talking about, but I'm also still learning so take everything with a grain of salt. I think it's better to learn scales or rather the sounds of every interval against the root drone. In this way you won't have to actively memorize hundreds of chords, because you will be able to make them yourself almost on the spot. In the start it's seems impossible but you can do it. Also CAGED system paired with pentatonics and then the two extra 2 tones for all the modes is in my opinion a way to go.

How to write chord progressions besides fifths?

I mean what are ways to find the next chord besides playing its forth (A7 > D for example)

Like whats the theory from going to 1 to 2 or 7 to 1

This song i'm listening has these chords on the verses

A7 Dm G C (all fourths/fifths in the key of Am)

then after that C

C#ยบ Dm Am B7 E7 Am

Whats the theory for those chord changes where its not fifth

If you want to adhere to the tab you can bend the string behind the nut. Otherwise just play it one string lower.

Thanks. I wouldn't sell it though. An Electra-Westone Dynasty modded to suit my playing style has been my dream guitar for a while. When I found out how relatively cheap they are considering they were ONLY made in 1984, I was ecstatic and had to get one ASAP. Paid $250 on Ebay and even though I stripped the original finish and removed the old pickups, I wouldn't even sell the thing the way it is now for 2 thousand dollars.

C# augmented consists of c#, e# (f), g## (a)
Dm consists of d, f, a
Am consists of c, e, a
B7 consists of b, d#, a (and f#)
E7 consists of b, d, g# (and e)

Notice how you only change 1 or 2 notes to go from one chord to the next. A scale that all these chords take their notes from would be
a b c (c#) d (d#) e f g#
which is just a harmonic minor with added maj3 and aug4 / dim5, or your standard blues scale but with a maj7 instead of min7 and min6 instead of maj7.

Just overcompensate while tuning so it pulls itself into tune.
No need to adjust the bridge more than once unless you change string gauges / type.

There is not a whole lot of theory in chord progressions themselves, but there are some reoccurring patterns. For example: chord motion going up in fourths/down in fifths sounds the most pleasant, and after that, chords that are a third away from each other.

As for the progression you posted: It starts on the III and uses #iiidim motion to get to the iv chord. Then it drops a fourth going to the i. Going from iv to i is called a plagal cadence.
The next part is trickier because it uses a lot of what are called secondary dominants. Hopefully you know that dominants resolve very strongly to the tonic. You can place that level of tension/resolution by altering chords to be dominant in quality. This only works when the chord moves down a fifth/up a fourth. The #dim movement of earlier is related to this concept, because you could see C#dim as a A7 without a root.
The B7 is a secondary dominant going to the V. The fifth chord in natural minor is normally a minor chord, but because the resolution going from v to i is pretty weak, people make the chord major because that has the natural seventh, which wants to resolve very strongly to the tonic.
>>
>>71897596
C#o means diminished not augmented. C+ would be augmented
>>
>>71899104
why not use common dim and aug markers
>>
>>71897596
>A scale that all these chords take their notes from would be
>a b c (c#) d (d#) e f g#
>which is just a harmonic minor with added maj3 and aug4 / dim5, or your standard blues scale but with a maj7 instead of min7 and min6 instead of maj7.

The scale is A major actually
The key is A major

The C#ยบ was used as a transition from C to Dm, its not "inside" the key's scale

>>
>>71899118
because they can't always be used interchangeably
>>
>>71899004
>You can place that level of tension/resolution by altering chords to be dominant in quality
In that song its the B7 and E7 right?
Got it

>Hopefully you know that dominants resolve very strongly to the tonic
To the tonic, not just to the fourth up?

>The B7 is a secondary dominant going to the V. The fifth chord in natural minor is normally a minor chord, but because the resolution going from v to i is pretty weak, people make the chord major because that has the natural seventh, which wants to resolve very strongly to the tonic.
Cool
How he went from A to B? Just know by ear the sound of the II, and of the II>V motion?

>The #dim movement of earlier is related to this concept, because you could see C#dim as a A7 without a root.
Actually it would be with a augmented root (A#), and bass on the maj3.
How does that sum up?

So whats on that song is
"maj7 / maj > fourths"
(At that point it sounds like modulated to the C / relative major key)
then he breaks the fourths with the C# (or A7 8/C# (is it how its written?))
then plagal cadence (down to fifth) going back to i
then somehow i > II7, then maj7>fourth again (ii > v > i)

You don't have to think about it that analytically. The only important part in making chord progressions is if it sounds good, that goes for anything in music. You don't need to have a bunch of rules for chord progressions. But when you start exploring what makes them tick, then you can find a whole world of order and beauty. So you don't have to stress about how chords can move from I to II or something.

>Actually it would be with a augmented root (A#), and bass on the maj3.
I think you mean that C#dim chords have a Bb (enharmonically equivalent to A#). The chord you described is a A7b9 without a root. There is no such thing as an augmented root though.
