/r/ songs ideas to a blues album
how to variation so it doesnt sound repetitive (mostly instrumental jams)

>fast dancey 12bar in A maj/min

>fast 12bar, like the other above, but in C, and Chuck Berry boogie type

>really slow (45bpm) 12bar in G; strictly minor,

>85bm 12bar; strong "tada-tada blues rhythm"; maj/min;

>mid-tempo happy, major, BBKing like in Ab

>ZZ Top-like mid-tempo, with a strat and a lespaul on call & response
>>
Is there a single coil EMG that you guys would recommend for my HSH guitar? I already replace both humbuckers with an 81 and an 85 and left the middle pickup in without wiring it to anything but that looks bad.

I have the same issue with my telecaster. The neck radius makes it so that the D and G strings are quieter than the others. Especially noticeable when there's a droning note on E or A but the melody is on D and G. I wish the pole pieces on the bridge pickup were adjustable.

http://www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_Parts/Bridges_and_Tailpieces/Bridges_and_Tailpieces_for_Electric_Guitar/Non-trem_Bridges/Adjustable_Wraparound_Bridge.html

And then buy this just to take the saddles to put in the other bridge?
http://www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_Parts/All_Hardware_and_Parts_by_Instrument/Electric_Guitar_Parts/Electric_Guitar_Bridges_and_Tailpieces/Tune-o-matic_Bridges/Schaller_Roller_Bridge.html

>>71841434
2 months is plenty of time to fuck around with a guitar. I've been playing 11 years, not like it was my first guitar and I just got frustrated with it. The action was too high and the frets were not leveled correctly, I couldn't lower it without fret buzz all across the board. Not to mention the G string would never intonate.

>>
>>71841469
I'm just saying that if you had gotten it from a store you could have found that out before you spent the money. I'm guessing you got it online so I would have taken advantage of their return policy to get a different one.

>Gibson living up to their reputation

Fret leveling shouldn't be an issue on a new guitar. Especially at that price range.

I've got a LP studio faded as well and after a few upgrades, they can be mean guitars. Never cared for the sound of the stock burstbucker pros, way too thin and not nearly enough punch for me. Replaced with Seymour Duncans, Black Winter in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck. Sold the the burstbuckers. Tore out the retarded PCB electronics and replaced with a 50s style wiring harness with 500k pots. The action is low on mine and the g string can be fixed with some careful filing. Probably upgrade the tuners at some point.
>>
>>71841890

Because Fender and Ibanez don't have an insane handmade premium. If someone wants to drop that much on a guitar because they like the idea of it being handcrafted then that's their decision. I'm just saying you could get a nice LP for a lot less if you're not anal about it being produced in a factory (which I doubt anyone is since they all own guitars that aren't Gibsons).

i was pretty impressed when i demo'd one at >guitar center through an AC30

the neck pickup was pretty sweet and crisp, and the bridge had some heft to it without sounding muddled, so i'd say the p90's weren't too bad for what i was expecting.

you're completely right about the feel of one though. I had been eyeing a hollowbody Gretsch for a while, but after picking up the 339 and trying it out i realized that all the different Gretsch models had just one sound (regardless of model, pickup, and amp used) and felt like you were lugging a cheap acoustic around. the 339 just felt "right" for me, which is pretty rare for a guitar these days

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for $400 on Craigslist, Y / N?
>>
>>71847579
Hit or miss, I have an older Chinese Les Paul custom and had to replace the electronics, and the tuners/bridge (hardware could have stayed the same desu) and did some fretwork. Now it's a decent guitar, I assume these are the same, expect to spend more money into them. Think of them as a modding platform.

>>71847643
Fuck them, the way they're so autistic going after anyone that makes guitars that even slightly resemble theirs made me lose sympathy for them. Plus not everyone lives in the US.
>>
>>71847734
If you want to spend $400 on something that looks like a Rickenbacker and doesn't resemble the tone or feel whatsoever be my guest.

If you want a proper bass on a budget look at a second hand Wawrick or Stringray. Hell there's absolutely nothing wrong with a Fender P either.
>>
Are the Chinese Jazzmasters and Jaguars worth a shit from AliExpress? I can do a lot of luthier work myself and I have extra pickups.
>>
Really stupid Question;
I have le meme g400, and I'm not digging my bridge pickup it's very underpowered. Would a dimarzio super distortion still be able to fit the pickup cover over it? I really like the way the sg type guitars look with covers. Plus it would look retarded if one pickup was covered and one wasn't.

Guitars aren't rocket science if you have some basic luthier skills you can make a cheap guitar like that play and sound like a much more expensive guitar. In the case of that video i'd say 90% of the tonal difference is the pickups, neck width probably has a minor effect too.

Rickenbacker is so defensive of their designs because they realize that people could easily produce what they do at a fraction of the price.

>>
>>71848905
For the frets, I took a file and was very careful to apply equal pressure and follow the curve of the fret. I only went one pass at a time before checking. Once I got it, I took some fine sandpaper and buffed it up. It's still not perfect, but it's better than it was. The switch just has to be un-soldered, the wires cleaned up, and the new one soldered in. Don't make the mistake I did and put the switch in backwards like I did at first by mistake. Otherwise your neck and bridge settings will be reversed.

>Epiphone LP Custom
What is this I hear? /gg/ recommending epiphone? I never thought I'd see the day.

I got my white custom pro the other day. Did a full setup and turns out I got a bad one that needs a fret level and I believe a new nut. I also think I see a crack from the very corner of the nut about 3/4 of an inch diagonally down into the neck.

Doesn't matter. If it breaks it breaks. I just got a bad one, could happen with any guitar.

What if you only have 2 local stores near you, one of which only sells shitty BC Rich and bottom of the barrel Squier shit and the other literally has 5 guitars in stock, 3 of which are yamahas and the other two are acoustics.

What do
>>
>>71849549
Epiphone qc is the WORST. Probably 3-4 times worse than Squier but no one will ever listen. There are seriously 10 bad Epis for every bad Squier and I don't have the stats to back that up but I'm pretty sure I'm right.

>>71849592
Craigslist/OfferUp or Gumtree if you're in the UK? That sucks cause nothing beats a good local guitar shop. You won't go wrong with buying a mim strat online, though.
>>
>>71849549
If you spend more than $300 on a solid body guitar that needs a level, you failed as a consumer.

If you bought it new and it has flaws I'd definitely return it. Seems like a hassle but nothing like the hassle--aside from the cost--of repairing it.

That said, yeah, it'll happen to any guitar at that price point. And as long as you start at the Epi LP Standard or Custom level, they're decently made (although subject to variability) guitars.

I've got an Epi LP Custom Prophecy GX (the old version, not the newer version...very different) and it's comparable to my 2012 Gibson LP Studio Nitro. One of my favorites.

My favorite online guitar store recently changed their policy without me knowing (pic related), although it's been about 6 years since I've bought a guitar from them. I've already called them up after having it a week, because I hadn't had much of a chance to set it up. I opened it, played it and messed around, noted the fret buzz and high action and put it to the side to set up over the weekend and by then I put it off to Monday again and then it was 7 days gone.

Also how do they expect people to preserve the original packaging and unused? How are we supposed to know it's a bad one if we don't touch the damn thing?

Doesn't matter. They use a shitty courier company now so I won't be buying from them again.

they have techs who can make them perfect.

This is ridiculously not true. The risk with Epiphone is that the different factories have different levels of quality control. You may get one from a good factory or a shit one, if you don't do your homework. Fender Squiers are no different from Cort's or Aria's or any other mass produced guitar replica. Same factories, same quality control.

With an Epi, if it sucks, you send it back and get a different one, perhaps from a different factory with a better QC program. If you send back a Squier, you'll get back a Squier.

Also, why are we comparing Squiers with Epiphone LPC's? Again, the proper comparison is Epi LPC to Fender Japstrat or Mexistrat...

Anyone have experience with outlaw pedals?
I got a fuzz one and it's not bad but I'm still not sure how I feel about it so I'm looking to other people's validation or dismissal. Curious about other people's opinions, they're small and cheap, but I kind of wonder if they'll sound worse and worse the larger the pedalboard gets, or better, the sound kind of feels off no matter how I tweak, makes me wonder if it's just fuzz pedals in general, since I don't use them too much.

I wanted a catalinbread karma suture.

The guitar sound I love and strive for is like early Modest Mouse and Goo-era Sonic Youth.

You would think with the amount of money they have they would just buy a Gibson and still have enough left over tor techs to make them play even better.

how to be good at guitar
>>
>>71849802
Nah, it makes a lot more sense to tour with cheaper instruments. Things get broken and stolen on tour. Better for that to happen to an Epiphone than a Gibson.

I really like the chorus they make, as someone who doesn't usually like chorus pedals.

C'mon guys. Seriously. You're talking about 1960s Epis made in US factories by hand compared to Indonesian made guitars.

You can't be serious.
>>
The long and short on all this epiphone shit is; if you know how to do a setup, you can correct about 70-90% of the issues. If you can't, just bring it back and get another one.

If you're a metal player, get something made for metal like a Jackson or whatever. The epi can do it, but other guitars will do it better. Epis are for people that want a guitar that looks like a Gibson without paying the Gibson price.

You speak the truth and I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Most guitar troubles in general are from poor setup. Filing frets--or replacing them--are really drastic and irreversible measures, and I've seen several threads about it in the past few days. Just learning how to balance a neck properly can save so much of this more drastic, less effective (and in most cases, damaging) work.

If something is broken and you bought it new, return it for a proper new one. If it's used you may be stuck but it still may be an easy fix.

>Just learning how to balance a neck properly
Aer you talking abolt truss rod adj
>>
>>71850023
This is accurate. I do fretwork, but not enough can be said about the benefits of a careful DIY setup, preferably including filing the nut. It's sad to me to see a disincentive, high price of entry, being promoted often here to beginners trying to get into guitar.
>>
>>71850052
Not just truss rod adjustment, but that is a huge component. Floyd Rose or other springed bridges require adjustment of the spring tensions, etc. Height of the bridge has to be adjusted once the neck is level. But all that's really not hard. The more challenging adjustments are when the neck's twisted from weird stringings/tunings/bad setup. But again, it can be fixed by de-compressing the neck and some massaging of the wood (heh hehheh). Just knowing those basic techniques can save a lot of money (or make a lot of money, if you buy "distressed" guitars like I do, fix them and flip them on eBay).
>>
>>71850023
Guitarists need to learn about truss adjustment. There's no reason to be afraid of turning the truss rod. Neck relief needs to be adjusted sometimes and you're not going to fuck up your neck unless you're a complete idiot.
>>
>>71850315

Agree. It's just that some don't understand the mechanics of what they're doing.

Guitarists really love super-low action, but putting your guitar at that super-low-action threshold means that it has to be adjusted to stay at that position. Temps change. Humidity changes. String tensions change based on tuning/setup/temp/humidity/gauge. Adjusting for those things, especially in a low-action setup, is critical if also hard to do.
>>
>>71850430
Hey man, some of us like to keep our dynamics, too! Personally I need to be able to play pretty hard without buzz to be comfortable with my dynamic range.
>>
>>71850960
For sure, and my comment wasn't meant as "this is the way to set up a guitar". On the edge guitar setup has value, but it's really high-maintenance. For most guitarists a less aggressive setup will do nearly the same thing, and it'll require far less time to achieve and maintain.
