It depends on the E note. E4? E2? E2 is obviously the low open E string. If I had a song that used E2 to E4,I would play all the notes 0-4 frets. C3? 3rd fret A string. D4? 3rd fret B string. Think of it like that.

Does it sound bad, for the one listening, if the guitar solo doenst go through a multiple of 4 bars?

My band is playing War Pigs
@3:29 https://youtu.be/LQUXuQ6Zd9w

I cant, for fucks sake, count the bars while soloing

I play the major lick that goes before the solo
Play some licks (on the original its 4 bars)
Then hold E chord for 2 bars
Then play some more licks that assemble the original solo (original this part is 6 bars)

Then the bassist and drummer catch up with the lick at the end of the solo, and go to the next section

The ending solo i can count because its easier because it has chords changing

pretty much no one does. feeling it is more important than counting it, if you're playing live at least. counting is the drummers job.
>>
>>71832045
the fuck is this video

anyway yeah i really had trouble with that when i was playing with a jazz band. it was either focus on creating harmonic solos or really concentrate on what bar i'm on.

i guess just really practice and try to hear the chord quality as it changes. for jazz i would listen for the dominants and the turnaround
>>

Can somebody gimme a rundown on combo amps? I have a large Marshall in my garage but I want something small to fuck around on while I'm shitposting on /mu/. I wanna stay below $200 and so far I'm looking at the

-Fender Mustang I
-Orange Crush 20RT

I haven't looked into amps in a looong time so do you fags have any suggestions? It'll be used with my Ibanez S520 for playing buttrock mostly.
>>
>>71832340
i find it easy when theres progressions, i go as you, by the chord sound, dominands, turnarounds
but when its just multiple bars of the same chord/riff i cant count it. i even forget where is the 1 beat because its just mess

>>71832246
i can't feel when its not a progression or a cool riff
>>
>>71832432
the bassline moves pretty decidedly, you could follow it
>>
>>71832429
Mustang is a modelling amp so it is way more diverse than the Orange, but I doubt any tone it gets will be as nice as the Crush. Pretty much quantity over quality. I'm not sure what type of gear buttrock guys were using but the Mustang might be better for getting their tone.
>>
>>71832482
follow how?
its improvising too. and dont marks the 1
>>
>>71832537
i'm saying just have the bassist come up with a consistent bassline that fits the chord and have him change at the end of your solo so you have a cue. other than that idk what to tell you
>>
>>71832432
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3b6SGoN6dA

watch how they do the solo live, they aren't counting it either, ward is waiting for his cue when iommi starts doing that fast pull off/hammer on lick. you see how he changes his drumming there? he even looks at iommi.
>>
>>71832571
then it will get rid of his fun
its hopeless
ill just keep having the band follow my last solo lick
or learn to feel the bars so i can count 4 and 6

Just got this thing. Holy shit this is fun. And useful too. I can't believe I never got a Whammy sooner. Unless you're doing weird sonic youth tunings, this pedal single-handedly replaces alternate tunings, capos, and tremolo bars.
>>
>>71832590
that vid he soloed 5 bars before the E chord (damn its 5 on the original too, i had said 4)
then held the E chord 1 bar
then soloed 6 bars just like the record
and did the end-of-solo lick

same thing on this https://youtu.be/9ssDXiMLX9o and on the other vintage concert i watched

tl;dr they do it like the recording, same lenght
>>
>>71832045
Love that ending riff at 6:34. Theres so many songs and progressions in the world you can fit it in during your live jam. Just like Pearl Jam does on Alive!
>>
>>71832773
you're counting it too slow or something. he solos for 16 bars before he hits the E chord.
>>
>>71832529
I like the Orange's simplicity, and the Mustang looks like it is a clusterfuck of controls. I wish there was a decent sounding amp with some overdrive and reverb, without all the bullshit.

I found out that the Blackstar IDC20 is supposed to be pretty decent, might give that a try.
>>
>>71832850
I was counting in halfs lol, 2 bar i counted as 1. But anyway it goes 10 bars before the E chord
I guess you counted 16 including the low lick that comes before the impro?
Anyway he always solos for the same amount of bars, theres no drummer waiting for him on this song
>>
>>71832957
its easier to just think of it as 16 bars. i understand why you're splitting it in 6 and 10 because you're trying to divide it into sections to practice, but it's really 16 bars because it comes in directly after the break

Do you even need all the options that it provides? Honestly probably better off just getting a 6505+ or one of its many variants.

Forget Bronch shortscale trash

Jazz is richer with less and easy to stop resonance for jazz, funk etc, Not that you can't do this on a P but it's more suited to a driving emphasized sound
>>
>>71837936

I started with a squier PJ and loved the sound so much that I'm building the PJ bass posted earlier in this thread:
>>71829879

I play finger style in rock bands.

IN MY OPINION
>P pickup sits very well in the mix, low bump bubump bump sound
>J pickup has more high mids and cuts through mixes better, imo not as much depth
>humbuckers have a distinct growl sound that's easily customizable, but to me it's a jack of all trades, master of none

P+J is all a rock bass player will ever need. I do like the sound of humbuckers too, but it's not MY sound

Hey, I need some advice.
Tried out a guitar at a guitar shop, waited for pay day, went in to buy it but it was already sold, so I told them to import another identical one for me.
Now I'm worried that the one they are importing for me might not stay in tune as well as the one I already tried out. So my plan is this:
>wait for call that guitar arrived at shop
>ask to play it before actually handing over my money
>make sure it stays in tune and sounds and feels like I want it to
>refuse to buy it if that is not the case
Is this reasonable or am I asking too much and have to swallow the pill now that they are importing this one specifically for me?

Bit under 900 €. I never signed anything and didn't hand anything over in advance.
I'm a bit wary because during my guitar testing sessions there I was handed an MIA strat where the high e just wouldn't stay in tune and dropped a semitone every time you bent it, even after like 30 minutes of trying to keep it in tune.
Would be a shame, it's a comfy shop and I like being there.

>>71838234
I know, but that usually stops after maybe 10-15 minutes of bending and retuning in my experience, unless the tuners or bridge are fucked.

DO NOT BUY A WRAPAROUND BRIDGE
The wraparound will redirect the flow of tone from the body back through the pickups into the neck, creating a feedback loop which induces hum and leads to excessive noise. You will get more sustain, but it's not worth it.
You might get away with it if you remove one of the pickups and fill in the cavity with solid material to try and block the tone flow a little.

Question on theory:

The first 3 chords of Chick Corea's "Spain" are GM7, F#7, Em.

I was noodling around and found I really liked the sound of B Minor Pentatonic over the GM7 chord, which makes sense because it's just the 3, 5, 6 (or 13), 7, and 9 of GM7.

What I don't understand is I found I really liked the sound of the Bb Altered Scale or F# Mixolydian b13 Scale over the F#7 chord.

So my question is "Why does that b13 sound so good on the F#7 chord?" When I play a straight F# Mixolydian Scale on it it sounds kinda bad.

Also
F# mixolydian has A# which is G's minor third thats why it sound bad
Also has Db which is G's diminushed note
Eb too. Damin its all off
It has clashing notes against GM7 which seems to be the song's key

Well the F#7 chord is nondiatonic to G Major anyway, and I also noticed that the G Major scale sounds pretty bad over the GM7 chord too; G Lydian sounds better. So that kind of explains the b13 over F#7, because the same note is the #4 from G Lydian.

I'm just not sure where that F#7 chord comes from. I guess it's a sub for what would normally be F#m7. Sounds good anyway.

Had the Mustang 1 for about 3 months before I replaced it with a Marshall DSLC40C. I ended up leaving the Mustang 1 at home for breaks and whatnot and keeping the Marshall at my dorm. My suitemate bought a "used" Orange Crush the other day. He loves it. It sounds great for only $70.
The Mustang isn't bad. It's fun to mess around with and the software that it comes with to make new tones. However, it doesn't sound nearly as good as the Orange Crush.
If you're not interested in the software and tone shit, the Orange Crush would work fine.
I use a Boss ME-80 effects pedal since it's easier to move between school and home so the Mustang is kind of useless for me.

How long did it take for you to become an intermediate level player? By intermediate, I mean being comfortable with barre and open chords and knowing a few scales, knowing at least 5 songs that aren't just simple strumming, and knowledge of most of the basics of the instrument.

What have you even been doing? I hope this isn't another case of pedal hoarding.
>>
>>71840223
I did too. I got the metallica black album song book day one because I was a real metallica fan back then like an idiot and I learned tab and everything real quick. Even learned to read sheet music because my younger brother wanted to learn piano and we can't afford lessons so I taught him the basics and then he picked it up on his own and studied modes and all that shit himself.

I don't know what I've done with the last 5 years, or 6 going on this year I think. Guess it's kind of a reflection of what I've done with my life.

I have 3 guitar books now, the berklee complete edition is the best I think. I can just never be bothered picking it up. Having a book and trying to squint to read it just doesn't work half the time and I think ah to hell with it.

I don't know, jut messing around and making stuff up as I go along.

I don't have any pedals. I have a roland cube 40xl and that's it. It does loads of shit. I hate pedals. The only pedal I would have is one of those neat tuners for more precise setups.

My dream setup is like 3 guitars. I am in the process of filling out one of those guitar sheet things.

The odds of 30 failed dubs in a row are (9/10)^30 ~ 4.24% (assuming they don't influence each other, which is technically not true but since they are so far apart, we can say they _almost_ don't influence each other).

hello anon

i already reduced the compression from that other post
theres not even compressor anymore, just the analog tape saturation plugin
does it still sound saturated like its almost distorting?

i cant completely remove compression from the recording cause the audio i have from this recording is already compressed (not saturated though)
and i cant record it again cause i gave the 12string back

whats to improve on the mixing???

basically i'm just trying to fix this sm57 copy excess of high mids and get it to sound even on the frequencies.
and sound like srv's original recording which is kinda scooped sounding.

i have only 1 mic
if i had 2 i could do a much better mixing job
mic the guitar and vocal separately, and at the same time

what i was worried about was not even the accent but actual poor pronunciation ("its good to be >dzere< walkin together my friend)"

Has anyone else ever bought a relatively great guitar and found out over time that you just don't jive with it at all?

I'm going to sell my charvel because I just can't get along with the neck among other smaller complaints. It's too smooth! I recognize that it's a great guitar for the price and that's a strange complaint but I just don't have fun playing it.

Probably the best rock rhythm guitar out there yet keeps it clean jazzier roots, Was a great guitar but felt like a piece of shit to play.
>>
>>71841109
Not him.
I dislike the fact that the pole pieces on the high e and b strings are lower, so the output of those strings is too quiet for my taste. I'm not sure if it can be changed, but then you'd probably fuck up the nice balance of treble and bass it has in chords.
Also the headstock looks very chunky compared to the neck.
