This is /daily/ thread hello.

The point of these threads is to critically analyse musical traditions from all over the world, including the western pop canon, and perform discourse on the topic. This discourse shapes what is allowed to be discussed and who is allowed to take part. As a shibboleth against lowbrows, the highest caliber of dank memes is used as communication. By doing this, we can create a utopia for true music lovers and colonise the planet, solar system, and galaxy. Every single utterance here is broadcast wirelessly, somewhere, some time, and will as such be launched into the infinity of space.

I listened to Bad Timing quite a bit while traveling this week. Other than an overly-elongated moment on the song "Bad Timing", it's really grown on me. It's near-perfect honestly.

nat's normally good but i saw that loveless write up too, starting saying it used to be a top 10 for you and ending with 'i can't understand the hype' is kinda dumb. Not that I can really criticise my reviews are turible.

i also still feel the songwriting criticism is p weak for an album that is all about the sound but we've had this discussion too many times
>>
i can't stop listening to jenny death. i have become a meme
>>
>>71804440
lol most of my friend's spring break was actually last week. Mine's technically not til next week but I got done with finals a couple days early. I imagine it's different in the hellhole that's Puerto Rico than in the God-Tier not-fake United States.

AND SHUT UP

MY GF GOES TO A DIFFERENT SCHOOL OKAY

YOU GUYS DON'T KNOW HER

>>71804515
I could probably debate about that forever, but discussion of that goes nowhere. Most criticism I hear is "it's just badly-written music and people only pretend to like it for the effects it's drowned in" which couldn't be further from the truth for me.

Again I don't really wanna debate about it, but I see most discussion basically devolve into that.

one of my most played songs on last.fm is now "[untitled]" by aphex twin

fantastic

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume II (1994)
>ambient, electronic

SAW 85-92 has a sound that lends itself to being seen as dated over time. It's follow-up, this monolithic, 156 minute slab of drone, is incredibly timeless in comparison. There are really no beats to be found at all. Some tracks have fairly slow-moving, subtle beats that are more reminiscent of this album's predecessor and Aphex's other work (the sublime "Shiny Metal Rods", especially), but this is mostly straight ambient through and through. It's not the best the genre has to offer, but it's remarkably consistent for how long it is, and it really never wears out it's welcome. Aphex's grasp on what his signature analogue synthesizers can do with reverberating textures and tones is at it's peak here, which makes for some incredibly beautiful, spacious tracks like "Rhubarb", by far the best track here. It's a journey of an album, definitely not a perfect one, but rewarding and enjoyable.

3.0+

on the aphex topic, i keep on thinking that RDJ Album was his debut and I have no clue why

>>71807183

RATM stills hold up imo, not aiming this directly at you but people get way too hung up on the lyrics, they're not even bad, people get really offended by the socialist/idealist slant for no reason. A good percentage of the negative reviews on RYM amount to 'wtf they made money while talking about socialism' and 'wtf people enjoy this stuff while still being part of the system'. They're definitely not bad enough to take away from how great the instrumentals are anyway.

PS There is nothing wrong with the line 'fuck you I won't do what you tell me'!!!

Any Django Reinhardt fans want to help me out with what's worth having in my collection? His discography stresses me out. you guys really like >1 hour long albums don't you

that being said, good taste y'all!!! you were both remarkably consistent (so many 3's and 2.5's...), but trip came to a head with my favorite album of the chart (It's a Wonderful Life) despite Confield and Epicus Doomicus Metallicus putting up tough fights.

Birchville Cat Motel - Beautiful Speck Triumph (2004)
>drone

That last track is insane, one of the best drone tracks I've ever heard and one of the most enveloping pieces of music I've ever heard, no matter the genre. It seems like the whole album builds up to that track, as each track adds progressively more and more layers to the equation before the whole album culminates in that track. This means that I'm not too huge into the ultra simplistic nature of the earlier tracks, especially the thirty-minute opener which left something of a bad taste in my mouth, but if you let the album reveal itself it turns into something pretty magical.

3.0+

Astrobrite - Whitenoise Superstar (2007)
>shoegaze, noise rock

Trip up, I'm still not sure why you thought I'd hate this so much. I'm not enthralled by it, because it's very much a style over substance kinda album, but the style is done quite well. It goes for a wall of sound and it executes the most pummeling shoegaze wall of sound I've heard this side of the Goslings, and it still manages to incorporate a lot of dreaminess. The dreamy element isn't great but it's a nice change of pace from the admittedly tiring walls of noise that keep on getting thrown at the listener. This sound in a more concise package with some more interesting songwriting would be great, but this albums seems a bit more like a tech demo for that wonderful, noisy sound.

2.5

damn boy i don't know. figured you'd be totally disenchanted by the distinct lack of songwriting. glad you at least enjoyed it
>>
>>71813440
when the sound is that good i can definitely get over the lack of any real songwriting or structure, honestly. that's why i still actually really enjoy loveless despite what that write-up earlier in the thread might imply
