Today we'll be voting on the fourth round.

For discussion:
Which albums did you root for in the first round?
Which albums did you root for in the second round?
Which albums did you root for in the third round?
Which albums are you rooting for in the fourth round?
Which album do you think will win and why?
How often should these tournaments take place?

Agreed. For that reason I think we should try and keep Have A Nice Life alive - it's the only album here (apart from Fishmans) that is known well and associated with /mu/ and not pitchfork/anywhere else.

I like STGSTV as much as everyone else, but Madvillainy is the best record of it's genre, so I believe it deserves the win over Spirit.

As ridiculous as I think calling Madvilliany the greatest hip hop record (maybe of the 2000s though) ever is, saying that Music for Airports is Eno's worst ambient work is probably the most incorrect thing I've seen on this board. Have you really even listened to them?

All of these albums are critically acclaimed and popular for a reason.

Because of the nominating system this had that wouldn't be enough desu, I can already tell you that with this sttipulation the next tournament will most likely have in rainbows and MPP in top 4.
What we really need is to make tournaments with some kind of kind of theme or category and make sure that the voting process is a bit more rigorous so there's a nice balance between having a tournament where you can see the result from miles away and a litterally-who fest where the most known album will win.
I'd love to see one of these for EP's but I know that it's gonna be all anco EP's radiohead EPS american football EP probably Swans EPS and MVP and so on so forth.

That's not what revolutionary means.

Lots of bands do something that no one has done before them. It's only revolutionary if it sparks a revolution, i.e. a lot of artists take that album and its sound and make new something from it.

Velvet Underground and Nico was revolutionary. Pet Sounds was revolutionary. Hell even OK Computer was revolutionary. Spiderland was not revolutionary.

lol you're retarded if you think that any of those things compare to the absolute innovation and reconstruction of rock music that spiderland was. all of the records you mention are great, but none are as ridiculously innovative and unique as spiderland. not even in slint's discography. i can only even name like 3 songs that remotely sound like spiderland.

Bands of the mid 2000s guys. The entire alt rock scene 2005 onward was directly inspired by OKC.

>>
>>71762342

>>
>>71762403
Influence DOES => revolutionary.

Being ridiculously innovative is ggreat, but if it doens't reach anyone then it doesn't matter.

Likewise, reaching a lot of people is important, but if the music wasn't innovative, then the impact is minimal.

Think about Sgt. Pepper's. That album was undeniably revolutionary, but in terms of innovation it didn't do anything that hadn't been done in some form before by either The Beach Boys or Frank Zappa. It was still innovative, but the popular music platform the Beatles had made their album more revolutionary than more innovative records like Freak Out.

1. yes it does, you fucking retard
2. it completely changed not only post-rock (i would say building it from the ground up off of talk talk's last couple records) but also math rock and post-hardcore. you would be hard pressed to find musicians from any of these genres who say they aren't influenced by slint, or more specifically spiderland.
it's a complete milestone in rock music. again, find me a piece of music that sounds like anything off of spiderland.

>you will not find a single song before spiderland, including talk talk, that did rock music like they did.
I can't. That's because it wasn't revolutionary. If it were, I could point to something released since that resembles it. Sure, plenty of math-rock and post rock bands look at it favorably, but very few took anything from Spinderland and synthesized it into their sound. most sound much closer to Talk Talk and, on the math side, most sound closer to more traditional post-hardcore bands like Fugzazi and Jesus Lizard.

Innovation is just one factor you fucking retard. Exposure is just as, if not more, important.

Psychedelic rock was definitely in the musical mainstream before Sgt. Pepper. The Doors' first album came out almost six months before Sgt. Pepper and there were a ton of influential albums (Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Disraeli Gears, Surrealistic Pillow, Are You Experienced, Forever Changes, 13th Floor Elevators, Safe As Milk, Younger Than Yesterday) that came out before or around the same time as it. Stop falling for the Rolling Stone memes.

I'm not talking about personal enjoyment, and again, I'm not saying Sgt. Pepper is as innovative as those records. But it was much more far reaching.

To contrast, I wouldn't say DSotM is revolutionary at all. It didn't do anything that previous successful albums didn't do, even if it sold millions. Similarly, VU&N was 100% revolutionary because it was fairly innovative and, even though it sold poorly, it heavily effected everywhere it touched.

I like how both of you went
>muh Rolling Stone
on that though. Again, I don't necessarily think Sgt. Pepper is in any way the most revolutionary album of all time, but it was revolutionary. Any artist of the 70s would tell you it affected their music heavily. The idea of the Concept Album wouldn't have taken off without it. Progressive rock would be very different without it. Piper at the Gates of Dawn couldn't have happened without it.

>>
>>71763334

>>
>>71763351
It's not about how many sound LIKE that record, it's about how many took something from those records and synthesizing them. You can't really trace anything from DSotM to later records. And yeah, the number matters. Otherwise there's no revolution.
>>
>>71763349
>Tying up the chronology of prog?
that isnt what i said you tard
i said that it tied up the loose ends of what prog was at the time. there are moments comparable to stuff like tangerine dream or cluster, and other moments that are comparable to out of focus or king crimson

>>
>>71763405

in the first panel you can see that nice young man trying to read the paper, and with his right hand he is feeling around for something that should be there

in the next panel he is contemplatively looking towards the reader wondering where his pipe went, and it then becomes clear that that's what he was looking for in the first panel. this is quite a plot twist because previously we did not know what he was looking for, so this revelation is akin to one finding out bruce willis was dead throughout all of The Sixth Sense

the man, obviously having encountered this kind of mischief before, reaches a conclusion to his problem: his fat stupid orange cat, who is presumably named Garfield, has stolen his pipe. and then smokes it. it's humorous because cats don't smoke pipes so it's like that one painting of those dogs playing cards. so we can see the man yell the name of his cat in anger and frustration, probably because he cant get his nicotine fix so now he's irritable
