How do people play hammer-ons so fast with their ring and pinky? My middle/index fingers have a decent speed/dexterity but my ring and pinky are way too slow and uncoordinated. They often get too far away from the fretboard (involuntarily) and can't really hit any notes fast enough, and they'll miss the string at least 1/3 of the time.

Keep index on 5, middle on 6, ring on 7, pinky on 8 for everything. Use a metronome and keep it slow and steady to build up the technique. Focus on keeping your fingers close to the fretboard and your hand as loose as possible - excess tension and movement will kill speed

Hey. Is there a resource like this for improvisation: Like a description of what goes through your head while you're doing it? I've learned some things about chord tone playing and so in a simplified way, what I am doing right now might be:

anticipate the chord coming up
locate a root, third and fifth of that chord
find a way to, from where I am now, land on one of those notes in the first downbeat of the new chord
play some notes in a scale that sounds appropriate over that chord, going back to the chord tones during downbeats
anticipate the next chord coming up

But I'm looking for something more fleshed out. In order to better direct my practice, to isolate the different steps involved and mental shortcuts people use. I can find lots of "licks to memorize", "shapes of scales to memorize" and then actual theory, but I want more of like something that ties it together and directs your practice.
>>
>>71730999
If you want to get good at improvising, just improvise more often. Just play over backing tracks over and over again, trying different things.

Look at Dimebag for example. Chromatic scale wankery with some blues pentatonic thrown in is what he made his living on.

I agree. I haven't played acoustic in years, but after building a few I started playing slide again and I realized how much I was missing out on. It helps that I collect cigars and have woodworking and guitars as a hobby. I don't have to buy anything to build them.
>>
Hey how do I improve upon using my fingers when playing acoustic. I have this habit of just plucking all the strings with my thumb and I realize it isn't right and not necessarily convenient. Is it a matter of just practicing slowly and a certain angle your hand is meant to be placed at when you pluck?
>>
>>71731166
Try anchoring your thumb on your bottom string and only using it for the E and A strings. Only allow your fingers to pick.

>>
>>71731868
>>71731911
ignore this.
Basic bass is quite similar to Guitar so with you 6 months invested into guitar already learning the basics of bass will probably go smoothly. Give it a try.
>>
>>71731868
There's virtually no difference in terms of playing past the thicker strings and wider frets. The notes are exactly the same.

The function of the instruments is quite different but I'm sure you'll figure that out eventually

I want to play for hours and hours but my fingers hurt. How long until I can play all day without pain?
>>
>>71732371
the most often you play the longer you'll be able to play. and it also depends on what and how you play.
>>
>>71731166
it depends on what you're trying to do.

folksy fingerstyle where you play arpeggios on the chords and stuff?
acoustic blues?
bluegrass like carter style?

if you identify what exactly you're trying to do, you'll find resources telling exactly how to do it. but there isn't one single way and a lot of players learn just one thing and adapt whatever song they're playing to that.

no matter what it is going to come down to practice and finger position, but it will be a lot easier once you learn to play any one single song. also you might think about fingerpicks. Not that it'll make it any easier but if you end up using fingerpicks you might as well start practicing with them now to save yourself the trouble of converting into them.
>>
>>71732371
you can put "liquid skin" on your fingertips if you want to practice longer. it's sold for healing cuts.

I've got a MIJ Ibanez Prestige and it's miles ahead of my Indonesian made Iron Label model.

Though, to be honest I like the MII a lot because it's got a different neck and a fixed bridge which is better depending on my mood.

>>71735186
This what's connected to the pickup. Not sure how it's connected, but now that you mention it some pickup surgery is in order. Time to open this up. Thanks for the advice.
>>
>>71734039
I'm guessing that's the wire that connects the two coils together. Put some heatshrink on it and solder it together because if it touches a ground point then you'll only have one coil working. That's how a coil split works.
>>
>>71735632
Also, nail clippers can be handy for stripping that kind of insulation.

Yeah, that's how it is. So, I looked at replacing the leads, and holy fuck. There's no way I can get away with messing with this. No solder points or anything on the bobbin, wires are just directly attached to the leads. I'm just gonna wore it up as usual and hope for the best.

I'm usually not one to do things the professional way rather than using whatever's on hand. Well, I guess I'll pick up heat shrink tomorrow if ya'll say it's so important. Hopefully the hardware store will have it, they never seem to carry shit when it comes to electronics.

It's not really as bad as it looks, it's just that where I located the switches necessitated a bunch of wires leading from the control cavity out to the lower horn area. I'll admit it looks pretty horrendous, and obviously some color coding would have helped, but functionally this way the best I could do. Also the shielding is grounded.

It's damn ugly but I came to terms with that already. All sown up she looks fine. I realize that posting the gut shot of this guitar is akin to posting gore, but hey, at least it gets some reactions.

I gota goddamn epiphone in the mail today and the shit won't stop buzzing. I've adjusted everything under the sun so it must be uneven frets. Goddamn this. Im not bothering sending this shit back. Been waiting 2 months for this shit.
>>
>>71736726
Have you measured the neck relief with a feeler gauge and a capo?
>>
>>71736726
Be more specific. Where do you hear buzzing from? What does your bridge look like (post a pic)? If you hear buzzing only on certain strings/frets, what frets?

All guitars will always have buzz if you play hard enough, and this is especially true for electric guitars. So it can be difficult to diagnose if you have a real problem, or just a heavy hand. You may also have the wrong strings for your style.

i think i've just been redpilled on KISS by vice of all people

what the fuck is wrong with me? did /gg/ bring me to this level of degeneracy?
>>
>>71736735
Dont have a feeler gauge but I can't fit my thinnest pick under it. I have as much relief in the neck as possible because I hit the strings quite hard. I can't believe how little movement there is in a truss rod. Like not even 1 revolution by the feel of it. I thought those things turned for days. When I hear videos of people saying to stop once you can't turn any more or you risk damaging your neck or whatever, I thought, what? who is turning it that much? But now I know they hardly goddamn turn at all.

I don't really know what the fuck im doing, never had to mess with a truss before because my esp came set up perfect out of the box and I've never touched it.

Or maybe it was setup shit and i never noticed it because I am shit. I dont know.
>>
>>71736769
If you haven't checked the neck relief properly then there's no point fucking with the string height. Most buzzes can be fixed with the truss rod but you need a capo and a feeler gauge to do it right.

Also, who the fuck is stupid enough to buy a guitar by mail? I'd never buy a guitar I hadn't played in a store.
>>
>>71736782
There are no goddamn stores around here. I got my esp by mail. This isn't like america where there is a guitar center on every corner
>>
>>71736769
So, you need to apply some pressure on the back of the neck to make sure you can move the truss rod easily. You should definitely get more relief before assuming you have a fret issue. If the truss rod still does not move without feeling like you are going to damage something, you need to loosen the truss rod completely and let the guitar neck sit for a while. When guitars are new and transported this can be a common problem.

I'm not sure about how the string tension should be, but I would guess standard tuning is fine. Keep an eye on your guitar and check the neck every day while it settles. If it starts to have upbow, you should set up the truss rod properly immediately to prevent the neck from warping.

If you're nervous you can gradually tune up instead of starting in standard, but it will take longer. The proper way of dealing with this problem is to loosen the truss rod and clamp the neck straight, but it pretty much takes specialized tools to do that, and that's really only necessary for more serious problems.
>>
>>71736792
Here, watch and learn. And you can't break your guitar making truss rod adjustments unless you wrench it like some fat-handed twat.

M8 I can tell you first hand GFS is better quality than Seymour Duncan. If you knew what actually makes a pickup good(the specs it's built to), then you wouldn't consider a perfectly good pickup trash for no reason apart from preconception. In addition to being made to the spec you want from your pickup, GFS has tight tolerances in resistances and Gauss.

Not all artec brands have particularly tight quality control but GFS does. Best thing about GFS is getting exactly what they advertise.

where were you when you realized your friend was retarded?

stop jamming with anyone whose amp is less than 100w

that's when they get serious as a rule of thumb.

>tfw my knowledge of sound is clean (low gain), dirty (overdrive, high gain) and I honestly have no idea how to use the high/mid/low/tone knobs, I just fuck with them randomly
>>
>>71731956
Just do a little bit at a time. Just play the top three strings of that chord until your comfortable with it, then play the top 4 strings, then the top 5, then play all the strings.
>>
>>71740051
>tone knobs on 0 (thought they controlled mids)
lmao
>>
>>71740051
i played with a guy once that turned the treble and mids all the way down and put the bass on 10 and then turned his tone knob all the way down
>>
>>71738260
>>
>>71740114
Bass controls low frequencies, mids control middle range frequencies (this is the life of your instrument), treble/highs control high frequencies, tone knobs are also a high frequency control

In a live situation, you need mids to be heard in the mix. The bass and drums fill up the low (bass) frequencies and the cymbals the highs. If you scoop your mids out it will sound super kvlt in your bedroom, but you'll get drowned out the second another instrument is added.

i think the guy had something wrong with his hearing and genuinely thought cutting all the treble and mids sounded better

A telecaster with filtertrons would be the punchiest and beefiest guitar sound wouldnt it
>>
>>71740588
how would it sound any different to a Stratocaster with the same pickups?
>>
>>71740604
the telecasters beefier due to the bridge plate and lack of tremolo

name a worse guitar shape than the tele

So should I buy a new Gibson Les Paul Standard or a 90's one this summer?
>>
>>71741087
can't at the moment, its not set up (i.e. only 4 strings on)
>>
>>71740766
they literally do tho

the tone from an electric guitar comes from the amp, pickups, strings, and pick
>>
i like mellow major licks on the neck pickup

>>
whats the difference from a guitarist's live solo (eruption, page's heartbreaker) than pure noodling
>>
>>71741222
Probably the use of tension and release and the sense of having a buildup and direction that everything is moving.
>>
>>71741204
Dude, who doesn't?
>>
>>71741204
One doesnt need the neck pickup for that https://youtu.be/rUceBH1gKXA

>>71741166
youre not sure, ur just making it up
theres nothing on the internet of someone has done a test of putting the same pickup on a tele and a strat, that would take some effort cause theyre of different size specs

even bridge material can affect the sound
just like cheap saddles that dont let the string sit properly and causes them to buzz, good saddles of different materials can affect the sound the same way
>>
i'm bending and bending+vibrato with just the pinky just like the other fingers
wow

>demo with a mix

fuck off

>No attempt made, delivery scheduled for next business day

reee
>>
>>71728576
even the last fret, where theres no fret ahead of it to buzz at, sounds dull like its buzzing. how is this fucking possible, its not touching anything between the fret and the saddle

its different than low strings low frets buzz too, these are actually buzzing over the frets/fretboard

is there such a "clyp"-like site that supports video

I play piano at the upper intermediate level. I want to start classical guitar. Im going to have to with finger picks cause piano makes me keep my nails short. However, what guitar should I get? Considering I read music and shit should I skip the Yamaha c40 or Corboda c1 and go for something intermediate? I tried electric guitar a long time ago but could never get into it because rock music is gay as fuck, but I really like the way classical guitar sounds and it seems a lot more technical anyways. Any input is appreciated
>>
>>71742426
you dont need nails to fingerpick, only to strum with the nails
which can be done without nails but will result in a mellower sound
>>
>>71742426
>Considering I read music and shit should I skip the Yamaha c40 or Corboda c1 and go for something intermediate?
Worst case scenario, you sell it back anyway. Quality instruments are always appreciable.

>>71742459
nails are pretty important for classical in terms of texture
