Go ahead, give the greedy Gibson kikes your money. After all, they do have the BEST toanwud and it was made in an AMERICAN factory (filled with beaners). After you give all of your life's savings for a shitty generic le custom LP, try flaunting it to others and call their instruments toys. Who needs to play their guitars anyways, once you have enough money, you're already good enough because you filled the giant Gibson coffers with your shekels already.

>>
>>71713383
You should spend 400 on the guitar itself, and less on the amp.

EIther way you're going to be stuck with a chinese made guitar. But it will have better hardware and parts if you spend more. A 200 dollar guitar is going to be hot garbage. An okay practice amp will run you about 150$.

For example, an epiphone les paul standard and an orange crush 20RT amplifier will run you about $550.

Hope that helps.

My 124 dollar washburn acoustic is holding up nicely. Its on year 3 of good use. Although within the last 2 months it has developed a dead fret on the 11 fret of the A string. Although this is anecdotal. Ive had a few cheap shit guitars throughout the years. And you are right. Unless you really love guitar already a bunch of problems can be off putting.

Get a Taylor baby taylor acoustic guitar. Its a good guitar you can keep forever.

Used is your friend. That said, verify things work before you pull the trigger.
A cheap tube 212 combo like a Peavey ValveKing is a good place to start for heavier stuff, any 212 Fender combo for around would probably be fine for everything else.
Guitars, just get what you think you'll enjoy. Do your research and try a couple out locally. It's worth spending good money on a guitar that will be extremely comfortable to play, because you'll enjoy playing it.
Pedals, get only what you think you'll absolutely need to start. Good pedals'll run $75-$125 a piece. Boutique will run up to $200 (or more). Spend wisely.

I play the strat more but mostly because I want to keep the hagstrom looking perfect.
The hagstrom has a heavier neck than the strat which is unusual but it doesn't bother me.
I'm really impressed with how the hagstrom sounds with distortion. Makes my shitty amp sound good.

Christfuck there are are some elitist musicians in this room. For around $600 you can get a MIM/MIJ strat or an Epiphone LP Staandard, a Fender 1x12 amp, and a cable. If you want to go cheaper, you certainly can, with some sacrifices. More than happy to offer more opinions. And they'll be constructive, too..Used will allow more options, this is just new off the shelf recommendations.

I am thinking on pulling the trigger on this amp. Has any of you had any experience with this brand? So far, I have only heard positive things about it, the demos have sounded great too. However, I am still skeptical, because is a $1k+ amp, and I want to make sure I am getting quality. I couldn't care less about the onboard effects(they sound pretty decent though), but boy the built in attenuator, and the 4 channels really make me wanna pull the trigger on this thing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESQBEI4lgRw
>>

>>
>>71715380
I wouldn't get because of all the app BS that it comes with it..
>>
>>71715546

>>
>>71713383
You wanna play electric. Buy electric, don't listen to idiots saying buy acoustic.

Epiphone and Squier make some great starter kits. You can get a better instrument and a better amp if you buy it separate, but if you don't want the headache it's a great way to get started.
>>
>>71715563
I'm sure you don't have to use the app to use the amp. But at around 2:25 the guy says when using the app you have more access to the amp..
Kind of a turn off for me imo
>>
>>71715619
Yeah, it is kind of annoying that you kinda NEED to use the app for that extra tweakabilty. Oh well, I like the sound a lot, and the attenuator is huge for me, because I am a bedroom hero.

More work involved than a solidbody, also MUH ERIC CLAPTON drives up the demand. You can buy cheaper ES guitars that will sound exactly the same as a 335,The 135 or 137 for example. Although I think people are realizing this and I've seen the prices start to creep up.

I'm still messing around with different tension strings for my bass.
040 055 075 100 130 was my old set
040 055 075 105 145 is what I'm trying out next.
Standard tuning on a 35'' bass, I hope the higher tension on the low E and B will help in terms of clarity and so I can mess with the action a bit.
>>
>>71717071
Yeah I've owned a couple, love them, some of the best deals in guitars. They're fully hollow though, so it's a different feeling from a 335.

Look for one with a serial number that starts with R, that means it was made in the Peerless factory and those are really high quality instruments for the price. The Made In China Casinos are good but the Peerless made ones are in a different category imo.

Fender MIJ Stratocaster
Two long cables
one patch (short cable)
Boss CS-2 Compressor

Fender Blues Junior

All are plentiful second-hand (but ideally buy the cables from new).

Best starter rig I can think of because it goes far enough to intermediate playing. Don't buy into the djent fad, just learn how to play.

My Chinese guitar is made of American ash and Canadian maple. My Chinese pickups are alnico, and the wire is plain enamel, and meets the expected resistance specs for the approximate number of windings, though that of course is an estimate. My tuners aren't great; they have a low turn ratio. Most people pay MORE for a high turn ratio like 16:1 because it aids in accuracy, and it is more expensive to make tuners that "you have to turn way more." My bridge is a very solid stainless steel. I can't make any claims about the exact makeup, but it is highly ferrous, and uses a block saddle design.

Your claims about resonance are hilariously misinformed, and your generalizations about an entire region of the world based on the existence of some bad factories are childish and embarrassing. Just considering my own sub $200 build, your generalizations have not been true.

I have no idea why someone who knows so little about guitars, manufacturing, and economics would make an infographic to spam. American factories are buy and large outdated, as opposed to newer factories in MODERN manufacturing countries. You think a protest at a Gibson factory would ever work? Hell no, workers unions have way less power in the U.S. than most of Asia. Union membership has been falling in the U.S. while it rises throughout Asia.

Y'know, I'm not a poorfag here. But I work a full time job and I don't like to squander my money. And I'm not necessarily saying that buying an american guitar is always a bad idea, if that's what you want. But trying to say it's actually BETTER value than an Asian counterpart? Ridiculous.

And just so we're being fair, my guitar wasn't perfect. It needed fretwork, and a setup, and for a couple hours of my time it got that work done. Now I can put my guitar against any, and I won't be ashamed. I can be a little proud of my guitar's quality, and I can be VERY proud of its value.

It's an american company that does its manufacturing in China and Korea. and we have laws here against false advertising. I see no reason why a small family business would risk their whole livelihoods to sell a few more guitars when most of their guitars are clearly specified as basswood.

Knowing China's flagrant disregard to every possible labour practice, I wouldn't be surprised if toddlers make the guitars and the bodies are actually made from ground-up animals.

Workers were treated appallingly at some of the factories we subcontracted work to. Some staff clearly underage and as a consequence the entire factory stock was destroyed and closed. Caused delays to production of a certain football boot.
>>
>>71717584
(continued)

Not that the company was aware of the labour practices. The findings were made at one factory on a snap visit following reports of unrest (standard practice). The term 'Potemkin Village' sprung to mind; on official visits the place looked like a model factory but standard practice involved physical abuse, withholding of wages and forced spending back into the factory itself. One factory tried to pay its workers in tokens that were only valid on-site - effectively 19th century bondage.

Don't listen to these fuckers.
Gather 1000, then choose a ~~600-700 guitar on whatever website.
Preferably fender, charvel, jackson, or LTD in those prices.
Do not take a gibson - way to overpriced at that level.
Choose by the skin alone, it will motivate you to play the fucking thing.

Then buy some solid state amp full of effect that youll sell in 2 years by the time you will know what pedal you want and what amp you need.

Bass and Highs are naturally cut by most speakers. The amp really just needs a control on how wide the mid push is. Anything else creates a unnatural sound that will not harmonize with other instruments (shaved mids mean bass and guitar muddy up together, pushed highs reach into vocals/drums etc.)

I mean I'm up with the looks part of it, but it's not hard to learn what makes a good guitar before you buy. It's not like you need to learn to play to know what parts of the guitar affect playability. Also personally I think it's better to start with a guitar with shit pickups if you don't play yet. That way it's nothing lost when you decide what kind of sound you want in the future.

i like the practice routine! very thorough but i think the timing section could use a little more than "muh metronome" maybe it could include "play at different subdivisions" so be able to play quarter, eighth, triplet, sixteenth notes (or other subdivisions). another thing that you can do with a metronome is set it really slow and think of it clicking not on every beat (1, 2, 3, 4) but just on the down beat. as f your metronome played whole notes. that last thing has really helped my timing personally.

also the mickey baker jazz guitar pdf always corrupts after i save it??
>>
>>71712792
good for you man! blue bosss is a cool tune. you can use c minor for most of it but from the eb min7 to db maj7 just use the db major scale. another approach is to play the root position triads for each of the chords and build your solo exclusively from notes in each chord. it can be a little hard to do the triad thing though so work your way up to it

I like the sound when I play my guitar unplugged or even dry sound thru my soundcard.

I hate the clean sound of my amp and even a few more expensive tube amps I've tried.

Is something wrong with my technique or do I just need to find a better amp? I'm playing lots of 7th chords and inversions and stuff and I'm wondering if they're always just going to sounds like trash thru a loud amp.
>>
How long has everyone here played guitar?
>>
Does anyone play through multiple pedal chains and if so how did you accomplish it?

I want to do this with bass

I want one going through the normal amp, one thru the fx loop and by having a chorus pedal I can add a three option. There's also some pedals that lets you an addition fix loop.

Really going for a huge stereo wall of sound without losing my low end. In the future I'll have an a/b to keep one amp clean but for right now I want to have multiple chains with lots of overdriven fuzz.

Is this possible or am I going about it the wrong way?

ABY pedal is probably a better way to run a multi amp setup than a chorus pedal.

Thanks. I thought the same thing. I only have one amp right now so I'm only going to start running two amps when we start gigging more and I can rent some equipment.

As for the chorus pedal I just wanted to use it to introduce a spilt signal into the chain. So I would have a good di box going into the amp head and from the the front of house can get a good sound. Slap some overdrives into the main signal to get that 70s amp push sound. The idea with the chorus was to add some distortion and an eq pedal without tainting the overdrive sound. Finally I want to add a fuzz in the fx signal for a low end sub fuzz sound.

In summary I want to divide my overdriven tone, the distortion bite and the fuzz and not blend them to hopefully establish some dynamic levels of sounds. I'll be micing the cab to highlight that dirty and blend it in with the clean front of house di signal.
>>
>>71721192
But won't both amps get the Chorus effect
>>
>>71720682
What amp do you have? You shouldnt be having any problem with more complex chord voicings when playing clean. They'll sound like trash at high gain, though
>>
>>71721241
>They'll sound like trash at high gain, though
Boost the mids, cut the bass and they'll sound more than fine.
>>
>>71721105
That's true but Liz Fraser has one of the best voices of all time and I most definitely do not
Plus stylistically idk how well it would fit
>>
>>71720698
I hope you could indicate what you are using this for. If you want to do this for gig, and you have a PA system, you can find a chorus with both wet and dry output.(Most of them have). If you want to do this to record something, you may not be able to find a good way to mic it.
>>
>>71720682
try a rockerverb in a shop.
If you think the clean is as bad as other expensive amp without reverb try with the included real tube spring reverb. If you think it now sounds good it just means you lacked reverb on other clean amp or had a bad quality reverb.
>>
>>71720682
what is your amp, try a different amp with your treble roll off and maybe consider semi-hollow.
>>
>>71721325
Cool. It's for live. In recording, I'm just going to layer different bass tracks together.

What PA would you all recommend me getting?
>>

I got banned from the gear page the other day because they were talking about gibsons prices and I said that minimum wage in Korea is 6 dollars an hour so labor costs can't really explain why Gibsons are so overpriced and its probably due to taxes and regulations and they banned me for that
>>
>>71721887
Korean guitars are also built quicker, with less dedication to perfection, I've found. They're not bad instruments by any means, but I've seen overcut wood filled with glue and had a few internal irks. The finishes are fine, but poly isn't as labour intensive. They probably said all of this. For the viewers at home...

Korean guitars are build better than Gibsons these days and even lowly super budget shit like Jay Turser has much better quality control than Gibson

Have you ever looked at videos of how Gibsons are produced? It is the exact same facotry setup as Asian made guitars, just in the US.

CNC everything, hundreds of minimum wage employees sanding, compartmentalized everything, fretwork done by automation.

There is zero 'craftsmanship' in producing a Gibson.

Not saying this is bad as basically all major manufacturers do it this way. The point was the discrepancy between how much they cost, where a 800 MIK guitar is usually a better guitar than a 2500 Gibson these days, and labor costs in Korea are only slightly less than the USA.

the difference will be much smaller, primarily being better/name brand pickups and better quality wood. another common difference is expensive guitars are more likely to be neck thru, rather than a bolt on or set neck. while there wont be much of a difference for many people at first, i find neck thru guitars have significantly longer life spans. the wood warps less, the strings go out of tune less often, and the joint where the neck gets bolted onto cheaper guitars often gets in the way if you spend a lot of time on the lower part of the neck. although, it isn't uncommon for companies to jack up prices based on name recognition so you should expect a sliding scale

I want a Charvel San Dimas soooo bad but it's so expensive at 900 dollars. JB in the bridge and 59 in the neck, made by beaners in Mexico in the Fender factory. Floyd Rose 1000. Sexy 80s looks.
>>
>>71724444
maybe you could get adrian smith signature Jackson? they're kinda similar, but cheaper (and worse, probably)

>buying a used guitar for full price
That's what you're doing when you buy off the wall. Hundreds of people come in and play that thing to try it out.
>>
>>71725074
It's a small as fuck store and I don't care if it's been played by a couple dozen people as long as it feels, looks and sounds nice which this one does.
>>
>>71711994
Why does nobody mention when Epiphone made starts?
>>
>>71725037

What sort of store is it? If it's a guitar center or something like that it might not be worth it but a smaller shop might score you some future deals.

Otherwise ordering online with those terms doesn't seem bad at all.
>>
>>71725020
sadly not
>>
>>71712481
From my experience epiphone pups sound like shit, really muddy and dull. There's been a few exceptions like the new DOTS and the nicer artist series hollow bodies, but other than the pups they're not terrible. You get what you pay for. My band mate has a 2016 Gibson LP traditional and it plays like a dream. Ymmv I guess

Small shop, 2 rooms with electric guitars (maybe 40 sqm in total), 1 room with basses, 1 tiny room stuffed full of amps for trying out guitars. Maybe 5 employees who will chat with you all day long if you want to. Specialized on Fender and Gretsch. That's why it's so hard to decide.
I think I'll just buy it at the store. I can do that sooner, I know the quality of the instrument and I do plan on having my western set up there as well. Plus supporting local businesses is probably a good idea.

I've gotten hundreds of dollars off a guitar's price because it was "blemished" in a way that wasn't even noticeable, not even used. Guitars that are on the floor should definitely be discounted or you're being cucked by the store.

Do you just not like playing guitar or something man?
>>
>>71713383

I recommend getting a shitty acoustic off Craigslist and start playing with that, to see if you even like playing before dropping 1000$ dollars

not sure if any classical composers would agree if they were still alive since i don't think the notion of the pentatonic scale was known to them but ok

They're dead, and even if they were alive you wouldn't need them to realize the pentatonic is just the 7 modes stripped of 5 notes.

Are you saying the third in the pentatonic scale is the same as the third in, say the ionian scale?
>>
>>71725824
even though pentatonic contains notes in many 7 note scales (doesn't work for locrian i dont think) playing in pentatonic results in a different style than playing with modal thinking, which i what i was referring to combining. do you just play pentatonic on everything and think you're not missing out because it's "the backbone"?
>>
>>71716152
If you move the root note and keep the same scale shape you can now play every key of minor pentatonic
Congrats

>>71725636

I have the prophecy with EMG's and it also has a slimmer neck too. If you don't plan on tuning down get it but I advise you not use EMG's they are kinda harsh and not nearly as good as the passive Nasgul/Sentient seymour duncan set in my ibanez. If you do want to tune down get something with a 25.5 scale length from schecter, Ibanez or ESP.

How bad is it lads
>>
>>71725876
If it's the minor pentatonic, no, if it's the major, yes
>>71725903
Nobody is disagreeing that the 7 modes provide a different play style to the pentatonic you goober. But if you're unable to see that the pentatonic is the back bone you should stop talking about how much the pentatonic adds to your improv, since all you're doing is omitting certain notes to play it...
>>
>>71726167
is the neck warped, or is something wedged in there?
>>
>>71726368
Neck is straight against a ruler and nothing is wedged in there. I've had some heavier strings on them but I usually downtune half a step and loosen the strings by a full turn when I'm not playing it
>>
>>71726458
odd.. Have you taken off the neck at all recently?

>>71726568
Nope, hopefully just a fluke, plays just fine

how to tell if a song changes tempo to 3/4 or if just the instrument is playing a triplet
>>
>>71726175

it's literally not. arpeggios you could argue are, but pentatonic no

>>
>>71726815
what if the drums are doing triplets along with the guitar
>>
>>71726870

>>
>>71726883
how to be sure
>>
>>71726798
Pentatonic: 5 notes
triads: 3 notes
you're a goober with shit counter points
>>
How long this should be
There will be a guitar and a section of bass solo to create variation. Like a one man jam
Also does the bass work though its sloppy
https://clyp.it/user/jjizthda
>>
>>71726934
so pentatonic's the backbone, but arpeggios are its backbone. so arpeggios aren't the backbone, they're the double-backbone (not the same thing). got it
>>
>>71727015
arpeggios are just chords. Sure you'll find the chords core notes in the scale but the scale and arpeggios aren't equal.
>>
>>71727074
so the chords (thus triads) are the backbone
>>
>>71727074
your retardation pains me. also in >>71726934
you equate arpeggios with triads, which aren't the same. an arpeggio can be a 7th chord arpeggio and it's still an arpeggio. not a triad. and it's 4 notes. the minor pentatonic scale is just a minor 7th arpeggio with the 4th of the scale added. there's nothing special about pentatonic that make it the backbone of anything
>>
>>71727157
so arpeggios are whatever the chord notes, not just triads
you made such a post just because o that
>>

I've taken to calling scales "pitch collections."

Look at a CMaj13 arpeggio and compare it to a C Major Scale.
