bitch I'm back out my coma

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Aby Ngana Diop - Liital
The first song on this is such a funky song, but afterwards everything else gets very cryptic and tribal. Although it remains very passionate and interesting throughout the whole work. It's a very gripping and fun listen, although hard at points. If every song were like the first, though, this would be a legendary album.

Schoolly D - Schoolly D (1985)
>Hip Hop, Turntablism, Gangsta Rap

Very cool early hip hop and primitive gansta rap (acknowledged as much by Ice-T apparently) from Philadelphia. These songs are long and super sparse, very rough-sounding. The beats are killer though, and the DJing is very of his time (D.J. Code Money). The way there’s no other rappers for the entirety of each of these 6-7+ minute tracks can be somewhat off-putting though, giving this a bit of an outsider music vibe. Would highly recommend though, lots of killer beats and rhymes here, even if the meshing (or lack thereof) is probably an acquired taste.

It’s really hard to pick a favorite track here, but “P.S.K. ‘What Does It Mean’?” has a lot going for it, and “Gucci Time” has a the best refrain—that chorus just gets better every time.

>9-/10

Black Moth Super Rainbow - Dandelion Gum (2007)
>Neo-psychedelia, Noise Pop

Weird but not that weird synth psychedelia with some weak breakbeats. The songs are usually cool-sounding but also usually aimless and lame. The sounds here are really neat, but the songs are so passive and uninteresting that I find it hard to enjoy them or even notice them consistently (that breakbeat backdrop is really just that—background). If I do enjoy a track it kind of feels like a mistake. The opener is legit great though, and the album does end on a high note: the triumphantly psycho/active “Drippy Eye” and “Caterpillar House”. Plus, I do like the vaguely plunderphonic aesthetic.

>6-/10

Black Moth Super Rainbow - Cobra Juicy (2012)
>Neo-psychedelia, Noise Pop

The production and mixing are much improved—the whole thing is a lot punchier, and the production altogether markedly more interesting. However, it is a lot of more of the same. The vocals and lyrics are somehow even worse though—mostly because they’re more prominent.

More of the same, more like more of the lame, lmao

Li Jianhong - 三生石 (2008)
>Noise, Drone, Free Improv

This is Haino/Mizutani-type massive guitar wailing shit, but monumentally and beautifully done in a surprisingly emotive and absolutely monolithic 51-minute guitar piece. Far from a noise wall, it does have a remarkably distinctive sound and clear component movements. All it needed to do was have a great, or even a good finish, but the non-ending here is beyond disappointing.

>7/10

Lez Rallizes Dénudés - Etcetera, Vol. 2 (1996)

Speaking of Mizutani, I gave this EP of extra stuff a listen too. There’s only two tracks here, “黒い悲しみのロマンセ或いは Fallin' Love With” and “永遠に今が”, 7:40 and 6:40 each. While harsh feedback is still very much the abject fascination of the group, it’s more often injected into these songs than sustained throughout, perhaps to greater effect—but really it just means the rest of the song is boring. The second track almost has a pseudo-funky, smoke on the water rhythm to it and a particularly terrible recording quality.

I guess this is for collectors’ ears only? These tracks hardly merit physical release, let alone their own EP.

>5-/10

Sis Q Lint - Pre-Need E.P. (1984)
>No Wave, Minimal Synth

First track is nearly spoken word, about a ghastly Gatsby-esque billboard face, with some random synth shit and a quick succession of off-kilter singing skits, about 20 seconds each. The second track, “The Divine Praises” is a far-off recording of a hymn in the left ear and an ASMR-tier prayer in the right—interrupted by radio-fed dada. “Dog Sweaters” is almost comically bad synth pop with gross sound effects. “Jap Monster Movie” is actually a decent if kitschy track, and includes the hilarious line “…just like a Jap monster movie, you’re a monument to tack.” Rarely am I a fan of these 80s art punk minimal wave one-offs though, and this is not an exception.

\$hit and \$hine - 54 Synth-Brass, 38 Metal Guitar, 65 Cathedral (2015)
>Noise, Industrial, Dance punk???

A bunch of experiments with a simple formula: glitch improvisation and rock-oriented noise, over driving and throbbing mechanical bass and drum blasts. It’s pretty industrial techno in its repetition and beats, but I’d wouldn’t dare simplify whats going on here to just ol’ “techno”. The variety here is extremely impressive, especially considering how narrowly categorizable these tracks appear on paper. Virtually every track here has the potential to be a standout track. All together the album overstays its welcome a bit though, and the repetition can get to you, no matter how they switch things up track to track.

Shouldn’t have held out on this for so long. I remember seeing it on the Quietus’s 2015 year end list.

>7/10

Lowlife - Swirl, It Swings
>Post-punk, Dream Pop

Wow, what a voice. If Robbie Basho did dreamy, reverb-drenched post-punk, like a more hypnotic version of the Smiths. But man, that voice and those chords and that reverb—the whole thing just resonates beautifully. At 16 minutes, four tracks is the perfect length for this band—they honestly start sounding a little same-y by track three. Track four is probably the best of the bunch though, so who knows.

Somebody recommended this to me directly here, so thank you. You know who you are, but let me know.

Cola & Jimmu - I Give to You My Love & Devotion (2013)
>house, soulful.house

I came into this listen completely unprepared for what lay ahead; a house plebe. With that said, I'll come into this review not as a house aficionado, but rather as a music fan.

The opener sounds like something they'd play at H&M, something trendy but not necessarily earth-shattering for me. The same goes for the rest of side A, which has some moments, but isn’t necessarily all that good; I could drop any of these in a random set and nobody would blink an eye. Cola’s voice is exceptional, however, and it should be noted that Jimmu is a very talented producer. The shooting star of their work together reaches its apex on side B’s opener, “Open Up Your Chakra”, a fantastic, 6-minute odyssey of catchy riffs and beats that will leave you foot-stompin’, ass-shakin’ and head-bobbin’ all day and all night.

Quick question: Does anyone know what this type of design/pattern is called? Does it have a name? Pretty sure it originates from something to do with 60s/70s interior design, but I can't find a name for it.

Top left is Luxury by Fantastic Plastic Machine, Right is the Brothers Strong's basement from H*R, and bottom left is the basement pattern from the American Sitcom "Too Close For Comfort" (which I think the two former may have borrowed from the latter, if this doesn't have a name that is).

I know this might seem autistic as fuck but I just want to know if this is called anything because I like the aesthetic and didn't know where else to ask. Sorry for the shitty image made over the course of 3000 hours in paint.

I'm lazy and don't feel like writing reviews for the others. But here's a quick chart update

Erasmo Carlos - Carlos, Erasmo (‘71)
>MPB, Tropicala

I’m a sucker for this whole MPB thing. It’s always so positive and uplifting, I can’t get enough. This manages to blend a lot of those upbeat Samba vibes with psych rock, with cool instrumentation and production techniques. It takes some skill to mesh genres this effortlessly, I’m pretty impressed by Carlos on here.

From the start, this is awesome. “De Noite Na Cama” is a psychedelic, poppy little Samba cut, with cool shakers, shouts and jangly guitar. “E Preciso Dar Um Jetio, Meu Amigo” has a phenomenal blend of elements and summarizes exactly why I love this album. The bassline is incredible, the guitar is exactly as psych rock/funk as I’d like and the strings add such a lavish feel to the whole thing. Plus - that sax solo! There’s little touches from outside genres that combine to make something so unique and engaging. Even tracks like “Gente Aberta” which are fairly standard Samba/MPB tracks, are excellent and really entertaining.

I should really learn Portuguese. I’d enjoy this shit a little more I think.

Anyway, good shit. Thanks for the rec pom.

>Various Artists - The Sounds of Earth: Voyager Golden Record
I think arguments can be made for and against this record’s magnitude and its cultural relevance. It sure is cool that a physical copy of this is out there floating in space somewhere, waiting to be discovered by aliens. Though it really is more of a sentiment than anything concrete. Anyway, beyond that there’s the music. The field recordings were surprisingly cool. It succeeds in what it sets out to do, which is to give a sample of the wide variety of natural noise, but it flows in a seamless and musical manner instead of playing sound bytes one by one. I actually think this was my favorite part. Then for the selected music we begin with Bach and travel across the world. The world music samples are unsurprisingly inoffensive, but there are some good selections indeed, though none too memorable. They even put some Chuck Berry and Blind Willie Johnson on here! I won’t really go into detail because it would be pointless. Overall, it’s an enjoyable cultural relic (that some claim is too eurocentric… well it was the UN after all) but not one that I’d see myself revisiting. If anything, it made me realize I need to listen to more classical. I think everyone should hear it once though, it’s a fun experience.

>McCoy Tyner - Asante
Much more interesting than The Real McCoy. The percussion was varied (mmm... bongos), the sax playing was mesmerizing, and the minimal, abstract female vocals were heavenly. It’s meditative and tribal. A fine jazz album but still slightly pales in comparison to the tropical bliss of Sama Layuca. Though we do see Tyner’s skill of allowing each of the elements that make up his music to breathe. There’s a lot going on, but it never clusters together in a mess. It just works.
>>
>>71708676
>Arsedestroyer - XXX ! Teenass Revolt ! XXX
As far as grindcore goes, at least coming from someone who has yet to really like a grindcore album, this was decent. It has what I want: slight variation and no guttural, belching vocals. The extreme lo-fi production works to its advantage, creating extra layers of noise that sounded good. Also, the drumming was top notch. For once, there were actually different drum patterns that changed as the song progressed (though keep in mind the songs are ~1:30 so they were rapid fire). It warrants more listens, but I didn’t hate it which is cool.
>>
>>71708716
Forgot to add one more thought. Teenass Revolt is like Tokyo Anal Dynamite but without the charm.

Good review of VGR

>that some claim is too eurocentric… well it was the UN after all
This is 100% true, and I think the thing I dislike the most about VGR if anything. It could be justified by noting that the majority of recorded music comes from western culture, and that western popular music is heavily influenced by elements brought from Africa, but I still think they could've done more from around the world since that's what they were trying to represent anyways.

>>71708761
The version I listened to was a really shitty rip, so I thought it was just a worse bootleg, but Hampus corrected me saying it was pretty much the same, just arranged differently.

And yeah, Heavier Than a Death is basically '77 Live in an order that makes less sense and with minus one track.

Glad you liked the review! And yeah, it's kinda pathetic when you really think about it, the lack of African music when it's so influential. I didn't even consider that.

Also, I will be doing Fishmans in chronological order.

>eluvium - lambent material
this came as a near-total surprise. i really do not like copia at all so my expectations were really low for this. tracks 1-3 and 5 are overly gorgeous pieces of ambient, just grounded enough to make an emotional connection with. "zerthis," however, is my absolute favorite type of ambient, with simple, emotive chord changes over some heart-wrenching noisy drone. seriously A+ shit, reminds me a ton of October Language (definitely my favorite ambient album). fantastic stuff.

So what's this "must-have classic" like? Apathetic, lethargic, extremely dull, vastly derivative indie horsecrap with stereotypical songs so melodically vacuous that only true hipsters can possibly "enjoy" i.e. pretend to enjoy this album.

You want more proof of how poseur this band is and how little they give a hoot about their music?

"When we started Magnetic Fields we purposely had one lesbian, one gay guy, one straight woman, and one straight man."

See what I mean? Image over music. Politics over music. Everything over music. They thought it more important to DEMOGRAPHICALLY construct the band according to some politically-correct pseudo-"activist" affirmative-action formula than to get the best musicians for the job. Musicianship? This is a hipster band, after all, nothing much to do with music, just another political band hyped by the politically-correct mob.

Besides, one look at the band photos, and really, all is said about these toffy-nosed pseudo-intellectual poseurs.

I count about a dozen buzzwords here. "Hipster" stopped being a meaningful descriptor the second this decade began.

pro-tip: style over substance accidentally begat a majority of good modern music, probably including most of your favorite bands. Not really worth looking into. Beyond that.

Amon Tobin - Permutation (1998)
>nu jazz, drum and bass, IDM

This is a whole lot jazzier than I ever expected it to be, even with the "nu jazz" tag. The very Lynchian, noirish atmosphere is sometimes a bit forced and heavy-handed, and a few tracks definitely focus on style over substance, but the mixture of very dark, seedy jazz with crazy percussion and breaks is done perfectly. The percussion is wonderful, a lot of it seems to be acoustic and live, but chopped up beyond recognition by Tobin into some hellish, enthralling breaks. Some of the synths and jazz instruments date this a bit, but they still create an incredibly cool atmosphere that fits together with the breaks like a puzzle.

3.0-

>>71710919
expect me to use this criticism on every single write up for that chart
>>
>>71710697
>foundational but dated
I think a lot of foundation hip-hop gets a bad rap cause it's marred by a lot of the goofier acts (e.g. Kurtis Blow, Fat Boys, Run DMC, Egyptian Lover, LL Cool J)

but peeps like Schoolly D, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Ultramagnetic MC's, Spoonie Gee, Stetsasonic, Doug E Fresh, 2 Live Crew all new how to bring the heat.
They are all definitely perceived to be a lot sillier compared to most modern stuff, but I think they manage to capture the more danceable, innocent, and earnest side of the medium that's been sort of lost in the slew of moody rap super stars that we see today.
>>
>>71711109
>The percussion is wonderful, a lot of it seems to be acoustic and live
This is probably my favorite part about this album. It makes it sound so unique; overproduction in dnb usually makes it sound very bland.

>めめ [Meme] - ちとてとち (Chitotetochi)

For whatever reason, I came into this thinking it was some comfy twee pop album (don't know why, the genres clearly say folk). Honestly I'm just not a huge avant folk person. It just bored me and I didn't like the whole aesthetic and vibe it had.

2.5/5
>Joe Meek & The Blue Men - I Hear a New World: An Outer Space Music Fantasy

Good space rock. Decided to listen to this after the awesome Tornados single I heard. There weren't really any amazing moments, and there were a few bad ones (the high pitched vocals). Fortunately those didn't show up too often. I really liked the space rock sound though.

Charles Lloyd - Forest Flower (1967)
>post-bop

It's really weird to hear Jarrett doing something not of the ECM persuasion, he's incredible here. The whole band is really incredible, Lloyd's incredibly passionate on the sax, DeJohnette churns out some of the best drum solos I've ever heard, and McBee's steady, calm bass playing keeps everything together. The a-side, containing both parts of the title track, is incredible. It's improvisational but every single note seems deliberate and perfect, and it's got so much contagious energy. The whole b-side is a lot calmer and less transcendental, for lack of a better word, but it's nice in it's own right. Nice pick, triangle.

Masekela - Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz (1973)
>highlife, afro-beat

Incredibly chill and affable, with a light undercurrent of intensity that lies over the whole album. This intensity mostly results from the fact that none of the grooves ever really let up, they're always moving and propelling every track along and they're fantastic. One-note, sure, and maybe a bit easy listening at times, but thoroughly enjoyable and fun.

I'd disagree with the "one-note-as-bad" portion of your review if only because that's the entire point of highlife/afrobeat and most other dance genres: the band's there to provide the backbone for the party, unlike punk and rock, where the music /is/ the party. ok so here i go with my review for the second disc of Destroy All Monsters 1974-1976. i listened a few hours ago so i'm going off of what i remember, but i took notes.

Crying in Bed Runtime: 1:08:56

This album came off a little less clear on the themes for me, but had more variation in the sounds it offered. There's a lot more "punk" songs on this disc. I can start to see the comparisons to Half-Japanese more with this disc, but still, these guys were deconstructing punk like this 4 years before them.

Anyways, this album not only offered more punk, but more psychedelia, too. There's a lot of spacey songs and reverb guitars sprinkled in this album, which make for an interesting listen.

Highlights:
-Jam Smear features an insanely lofi free jazz sax solo, in which the sax literally sounds like its shrieking.
-Space Beat is probably the easiest song to listen to on this album, and its jazzy, too! This song in particular reminds me a lot of Bugskull, but again, DAM were way before them.
-All the punk songs, but specifically Charlie (which feels a lot more laid back and straightforward for punk, even though its about killing everyone), T.H. Queen (a psychedelic track all about THC, i assume), and Evil Works (probably the most no wave of the punk songs)
-"I think I'll talk about Sunshine first... no wait I'll make her next. I'll talk about John first. Y'know John... you get fuckin' drunk an awful lot. That's cool"
-Whistle Space creates a super spacey atmosphere through tape manipulated whistles. Pretty cool.

I think the first disc was a harder listen, but it was more consistent than this disc. While this was enjoyable, I didn't find much of a common theme. I thought it was taking a psychedelic route at first, but it turns to more of the same noise experiments DAM does best as the album goes on. Still recommended, though!

Retórica were an experimental band from the city of Belo Horizonte in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The band lived together and recorded their only album "1º Comunique" (Cisma, 2002) in their house, integrating the building's architecture in the recording process: bass was played in a bathroom, vocals for one song were recorded on the roof, and two drummers would play in one room while the microphone recording them circumvented the building. Retórica's album is a 45-minute fugue that zig-zags from lo-fi noise through epic mid-tempo songs interwoven with spoken soundbites, and all of these elements recur in an overlapping crescendo at a point near the disc's conclusion.

Charles Lloyd - Forest Flower
>Post-Bop, Avant-Garde Jazz
Forest Flower and East of the sun are absolute monsters. I don't think I can recall the last time I listened to a jazz album where all the players are so in tune with each other's minds that they can complement every musical decision that is made with one of equal magnitude.
Jack DeJohnette is friggin' tearing it up on this record. Those syncopated rhythms are, MMMM, so tasty. And even though I'm not the biggest Keith Jarrett fan, I gotta admit, he kinda stole the show on this one.
The middle two tracks are really good as well, but feel kinda dwarfed between these two giants. The interplay isn't quite as tight either. I think they only really mesh so incredibly well at fast tempos.

Lee Noble - No Becoming (2011)
>drone, ambient

Definitely front-loaded, the first half is full of a bunch of really cool textures and track structures but the second half repeats and repeats these ideas and loses track of what makes them good to begin with. The second half also takes these elements and puts them in a more traditionally song-based context, which is an awkward fit, I'm not huge on the folky/poppier songs here. The first half is some really, really great drone though, shame that it gets worse and worse as it goes on.

Vampire Weekend - Contra (2010)
>indie pop

VW's first record is a solid indie pop record with some choice tunes, and their follow-up takes out all the spunk and all the songwriting prowess. The only two songs I like here are the energetic "Cousins" and the admittedly pretty "I Think Ur a Contra", but even they seem a bit limp and emotionless. The "world" influence is amped up a bit here, and every use of this influence is just terrible, they did it poorly on their first album and they do it even worse here. I wanna like this band, hopefully MVotC does the trick.

Should I check any of these (and Powerslave, which isn't pictured) out on the way to 200? Or are they really only for metalheads? The terms Death Metal and Prog Metal are a bit intimidating to me honestly, even if I've dug some stuff from metal in general

idk. Most people including me don't like Tool (unless they are one hue) but I think everyone should hear at least Lateralus to decide for themselves, because some people love it and others hate it. Very few fall between.

If you like Lateralus I would definitely rec trying out Blackwater Park and AEnima, otherwise they're probably skipable. Symbolic is damn good though and would rec you try. Number of the Beast is alright too, but would still at least trying it to see if you might be into other NWOBHM albums/bands.

Masekela - Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz
>Highlife, Afrobeat
Really good stuff, tight fucking grooves all over this bitch. I liked the combination of the warm, sweet Highlife vocal harmonies and the funky as all hell afrobeat percussion. Tumpet playing was a neat addition, player had a really nice tone.
It could get a little repetitive at points though, especially on patience/when, where there are no vocals to support the grooves.
Languta is fucking amazing though, definitely playing it on a future radio show.

Such as what? As a musical record, its cultural impact is none. It's a collection of noises ment to be sent into space, but the vast majority of people have never listened to the record (though they may have heard a lot of the sampled music), I'd wager a guess and say that quite literally no one has been influenced by it as a musical record for their own art. Its only cultural impact is as an artefact of humanity that is now in space.
