We still doin' this?

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Dexter Gordon - Our Man In Paris
>Hard Bop, Cool Jazz

Pretty much everything I love in jazz. Gordon and his band work their way through a number of standards pretty fantastically. Gordon is magnificent on “Scrapple From The Apple”, ripping through some impressive, fast-paced solos. He tones it down a bit on the ballads, like “Willow Weep For Me” and “Stairway to the Stars”, which prove that he can still play cool as well. The bonus tracks, which I tend to gloss over, simply add to the experience. “Our Love is Here to Stay” and “Like Someone In Love” are both fantastic renditions and the later of which is the best I’ve heard from Gordon. Bud Powell is really on during this album as well, and most of the band manage to hold their own.

Reminds me of the cool jazz I’ve heard from Guaraldi at times yet the band still manages to sound firey on the more upbeat cuts. Nothing too inventive or original on here but it’s still a damn good album.

4.5/5

Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want to See The Bright Lights Tonight
>British Folk Rock, Contemporary Folk

Based on the cover, I had assumed this was a heavy 70s punk album. Who would’ve thought? I haven’t given much of this scene a listen afaict so this is a really superb introduction. It feels like a cross of old school British ballads and contemporary songwriting, which proves to be a great combination. The closest comparison I can give this is a less jazzy Van Morrison but that doesn’t really capture this album’s style too accurately imo.

>>71688233
commercially all bands rival all bands, it's a band-eat-band world we live in
>>
>>71688331
[2/3 (whoops)]

The opener, “When I Get to the Border”, features some folky guitar work paired with a mandolin, some flutes(?) and an accordion. Paired with Richard’s old-timey, Scottish singing tone, it feels like it’s a folk song that’s been passed down for generations. This theme is kind of continued in parts throughout the album, with “The Little Beggar Boy” sounding similarly ballady and old school. Tracks like “The Calvary Cross” and “Down Where The Drunkards Roll” prove their abilities to craft a more contemporary folk track though, with 70s rock influence kind of shining in as well. And the title track - holy shit, it’s so good.

Lyrically, this is just completely crushing. Tracks like “Withered and Died” and “The End of the Rainbow” are nihilistic and depressing, with both singers complementing the atmosphere perfectly. Many of the tracks almost feel like proto-slowcore, with the slow, almost jazzy drums weirdly reminding me of bands like Songs: Ohia or Stratosphere.

Anyway, this is a fantastic listen, right up my alley too.

John Cale - Fear
>Art Rock

I could never get too heavy into this style of rock, with the artsy 70s stuff. It’s certainly intriguing, with pop, rock and experimental influences kind of meshing together. And there’s a lot to be said about Cale’s skills as a songwriter. But it just never sticks with me as much as most.

The opener, “Fear is a Man’s Best Friend” is awesome, with a poppy piano riff meshing brilliantly with the anxious guitar and vocals. It sounds like a lot of 70s stuff, almost like Talking Heads-y. It closes with a grinding, experimental little guitar piece which I dug. Both “Buffalo Ballet” and “Barracuda” are great pop cuts as well. I liked the atmosphere on the former in particular, something about the strings on the chorus sounds so beautiful. And “Barracuda” has a nice jaunty, funky bass riff and some awesome keyboard I dug a lot. “Ship of Fools” is a great cut as well, with the vibraphone adding a calming, almost ambient atmosphere to the track.

I appreciate Cale’s willingness to experiment as well. “Emily” has a nice little sample of a wave crashing, “Gun” adds some jarring, angular guitar passages and “The Man Who Couldn’t Afford an Orgy” is pretty bold lyrically imo. I know there’s probably a lot of effort put into this and there’s some cool musical ideas. It just felt like something was missing, especially on side 2, despite the great moments. File this under - “need to revisit”.

Can somebody recc me something?
lately I've been listening to a lot of David Bowie, to the Low, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Station to Station and Space Oddity albums, I had listened before to Let's Dance.

from those albums I liked mainly Speed of Life, Breaking Glass, Be My Wife, Life on Mars?, Queen Bitch, Moonage Daydream, Ziggy Stardust, from StS I liked pretty much the whole album. and Space Oddity, well the title track.

I also like a lot Joy Division, Interpol, Oasis and Blur, also Arctic Monkeys and I dont mean just bc AM, but rather Humbug and Suck it and See. Also Radiohead btw.

any reccs?

Also classic rock like Zeppelin and Hendrix

>Frank Wright - Frank Wright Trio
Starting up with some really good free jazz, we got the Frank Wright Trio, consisting of Wright on the sax, Henry Grimes on the bass and Tom Pierce on the drums, which seems like a pretty standard ESP line-up, but with some pretty great results. Right of the bat the first thing i noticed is how much of a fanboy i am, as i started to immediately make comparisons with Spiritual Unity. Frank Wright, for some reason that i just can't understand, reminds me a lot of Ayler. It has to be the fact that they both played tenor saxo on each album, but even then i feel like there are some similarities, mainly about how both like to do rather sparse improvisations instead of constantly playing through the whole thing. Wright feels drier tho, and his playing is definitely not as soulful and majestic, but on the other hand he can get pretty wild and at many points throughout the album he surprised the hell out of me. But, if we are going to talk about the highlight of the album, then we gotta point the man himself Henry Grimes. Man Grimes is probably one of the most talented bass players ever. He is incredibly versatile, as he might make the bass wail and scream, make it play a jawdroping solo, or simply put one hell of a rythmn for Wright or Pierce to go wild. Speaking of Pierce, i feel like he did a pretty ok job. Again, I'm making comparisons to Spiritual Unity that i shouldn't make, but if Murray were on this album it be a hell of a different story. But on the other hand, Pierce's style accomodates pretty nicely with the other two and he makes a lot of noise a lot of the time, and he had some pretty nice solos. All in all, good album, i might be too much of a sucker for free jazz so everything impresses me but this is IMHO a pretty good listen that everyone should check out
7.5/10

heres my review for disc one of this monster (teehee) of a compilation.

Gospel Crusade (Runtime: 1:11:06)
This is the first album on the compilation, and it is jampacked with all types of different ideas: lots of unique lo-fi tape manipulation and noise and improvisation goes on in this album. The entire album starts with the noisiest siren you'll ever hear, and then takes you on a post-apocalyptic journey through the deconstruction of music - deconstruction that could rival the Residents in my book.

Highlights:
-Conga, a 5-minute noise-drone fest, paired with a heavy tribal drumbeat and dismantled guitars.
-Drone and Shiver, two beautifully terrifying drone tracks with wild freakouts backing it up
-The tape manipulated bird-calls in Bird Song of Detroit
-Vampire, Take Me With You, and Paranoid of Blonds, some actual punk "songs" on this album. The vocals are lifeless and preach death and hell, while guitars begin to melt away as both songs progress. Great if you're scared of blonds, too.
-Nixonoxin and Ride the Fuzz, two back to back noise tracks, both with little defining features. Nixonoxin contains a speech sample, while Ride the Fuzz has some tapping drums, and noise shrieks reminiscent of Les Rallizes Denudes.

All in all, the first disc of this is unlike much music I've heard, and reminds me of bands like Bugskull and Faust. I would definitely recommend if you like noise or tape music.

Group 1850 - Agemo's Trip to Mother Earth
>Psychedelic Rock
idk what you're going on about saying this is "too weird", unless you're pulling my leg. To me it just sounds like you're average run-of-the-mill psych record from this time. Sure they got the obligatory long-form jam with a bunch of pretentious poetry, but that's p much it, rest was standard fare.
Anyways, this was ok. Seems like another overhyped forgotten psych album that got a bunch of praise from collectors cause it was rare and did a few weird things.
I tend to like the more out-there psych, but there's got to be some logic that comes across in some capacity. Here it was mostly just sloppy transitions between some really quite excellent kraut-y drumming and dull, hippy poetry.
The rest of the tracks are just kinda bland psych. Nothing memorable or catchy even. And I don't really like this style of singing (hippy faux-crooning where it sounds like they're trying real hard to make their voice deep) but goddamn everyone was doing it in the late 60's.
Last two tracks were p nice though. A lot calmer and more meditative, and they brought in some nice female vocals.

Baroness - Red Album (2007)
>sludge metal, progressive metal

Some shades of buttrock here and there, and as a whole it's just a pretty uneventful album, but it's got some nice riffs and decent variety for a metal album. Not all the variety is all that great, but it's great to see a metal band experiment with more acoustic sounds, one track even takes on a bit of an alt-country sound. I know that Baizley did cover art for Gillian Welch, but the americana influence here is a nice, unexpected surprise. Shame his vocals kinda suck, I find myself liking the instrumental tracks a whole lot more than the vocal tracks. Not just because of the vocals, the arrangements and the riffs of the instrumental tracks are just more inventive and less poppy, and the closer (minus the bullshit hidden track) is a fucking great six minute song that exists solely to show off how good this one riff is, but it's still awesome nonetheless. It's alright, I'm not huge on it but it's pretty cool.

2.5-

Cindy Lee - Act of Tenderness (2015)
>lo-fi indie, noise pop

The soundscapes are cool, but the songwriting is just nonexistent. This would be much cooler if it was just a straight-up noise album, but every foray into pop and rock is middling at best and just flat-out bad at worst. The vocals are irritating as hell, and the band does not pull of the focus on atmosphere over songwriting. Some bands can do it, but the mixture of noisy soundscapes with more traditional instrumentation clashes a lot, and the soundscapes always come out as the more interesting aspect. They're still not great, but they're nicely enveloping and they're well done, and it's a shame that they're wasted on an album I otherwise don't like at all.

Ryoi Ikeda - +/-
>Glitch, Microsound, Ambient
As nat said, the sound of this record is essentially a simplified, more primitive version of what we find on some of his later works. A lot less glitchy and perhaps not as ear-piercing, but I still enjoyed this a lot.
This record was a lot more rhythmically focused I thought. The first two tracks have this thumping, deep bass tone that is surprisingly heavy for how ~small~ everything sounds. Some of the longer rhythmic explorations are quite entrancing. They sound almost like breakbeats if they were fed through an old fax machine.
The ambient pieces at the end were good but didn't hold my interest nearly as well.
Also I love that weird feeling that you get when you listen to his music like something doesn't feel quite right but you can't put you're finger on it and you get a lil scared that some inaudible frequencies are fucking up your ears and it makes you kinda uncomfortable but you keep listening cause you like it you dirty boy.

Thelonious Monk - Thelonious Alone in San Francisco (1960)
>jazz, hard bop

I always knew I'd like Monk as a soloist more than as a bandleader. This album is forty minutes of nothing more than solo piano goodness performed by the master. Very samey, of course, and I generally don't like solo piano at all, but Monk's compositional quirks and personality shines through on every track, keeping the album fresh and really damn fun and pleasant.

3.0

The Clientele - Suburban Light (2000)
>indie pop, dream pop

Kinda like the Cindy Lee album in that the atmosphere takes priority over the songwriting here. There's one exception with "Reflections After Jane", a bonafide pop masterpiece that never sacrifices atmosphere for songwriting or vice versa. It's catchy, pleasant, and the dreamiest damn thing you'll ever hear. The rest is obviously plesant and dreamy, but a bit uninteresting. I'm not a fan of the vocals or the fuller-sounding, rockier tracks, and the remaining simple tracks like "Reflections After Jane" just plod along aimlessly. The atmosphere of this whole album is incredible, of course, but there's a fairly noticable lack of interesting song ideas.

Earth hour is dumb. But it all seems like a way to cope psychologically with whatever damage humankind has done to the planet. I went to the history museum here Sunday and it's mindblowing how no matter what section of the museum you're in, it's clear humans have doomed it one way or another and within very recent history. You just wonder how it weighs on the human psyche. Like in the way some people talk about White Guilt--you wonder if there's some sort of Human Guilt (beyond this stupid slacktivism). I have a lot of thoughts on it

Grimes - Art Angels (Transgod) vs Swell Maps - A Trip to Marineville (rym robot man)
Didn't really like vocals on Swell Maps' album. The guitar is pretty good though and general punk rock attitude on some songs makes up for unsatisfying vocals ("Vertical Slum", "Spitfire Parade", "Midget Submarines", etc)
I guess I didn't expect Grimes to be good, but I sure didn't expect it to be like this. It's like it's about nothing. Some songs did manage to at least sound pop catchy ("Flesh Without Blood", "Kill V. Maim", "Realiti", "Venus Fly") and since I suppose that was the purpose, I had to give 0.5 for achieving it. Comparing to Visions she has a small progress on her vocals, at least it's not that apparent now she's a voiceless hack, but the quality of music noticeably declined.

The Chameleons - Script Of The Bridge (Terminus) vs Radiohead - Amnesiac (rym robot man)
I have heard Script Of The Bridge before, but accepted it as a relisten, since it's been a while ago. I actually only remembered "Pleasure And Pain" from it, which is great yeah, but as it turns out the album in general is in fact well made and on this listen I got some more favorites ("Here Today", "Up The Down Escalator", "Less Than Human", "Paper Tigers").
Yeah, Amnesiac's good.

Nothing special, getting back to listen to some music since med class only comes back in august, so I've been trying to keep it up with some music and video-games. Have been listening to a lot of pic related, it's some fun indie rock, that has nothing singular about it, but it is a really joyful listen, remind me of a non shitty real estate.

The seminar today was a complete waste of time. Apparently the little essay I had to write for today was not actually for today, and we're supposed to hand it in later. Today we just discussed "what labels are assigned to you" based on appearance or a five minute discussion, and then we discussed normative views of those labels. Of course all the girl put the label "woman" and talked about how it has literally ruined their entire life to live as a woman in the patriarchy and how they've been oppressed always. There's also an asian chick who put "asian" and said she's constantly exotified and sexualised because of her ethnicity.

I put "uninteresting" and said that people won't notice anything about me because I don't particularly stand out from the norm. Apparently this is racist because it highlights people who do not fit societal norms and this is bad.

Fuck's sake.
>>
>>71701370
Why didn't you say "patrician"? Or would that be classist and reactionary and probably racist too?

Do you guys ever engage in a conversation and something pops into your head that you think "this thing I'm thinking about is, to me, really interesting and would add to the discussion, but I know that if I voice it no one else will think it's interesting so I better just be quiet"? I've noticed I do this quite a lot and I often wish I could just ignore what people think and say what I'm thinking about.

I've taken to asking that exact question every now and then when I think this, particularly if the conversation is sort of dying, and I've noticed that about half-half say yes or no, but almost unanimously people tell me to say what I was thinking, and often they are actually interested in what I'm saying.

>>71701427
Patrician sort of sounds like patriarchy and has the same root in pater for father, so it's clearly a sexist term that is used to oppress women. It's also closely related to ancient Roman culture which was white and so using this term is racist and oppressive to women of colour.

>implying anyone would label me patrician from my looks or a short conversation with me
>implying anyone in real life use the term patrician

Case in point: right now I'm thinking that I'd really like to have some... thing... to speak about like an impressed Brit, because it sounds so neat. I just want something that makes me go "That's quite remarkable, astonishing really, isn't it?" and just be bemused about something. This is definitely because I'm watching Grand Designs and Kevin McCloud says stuff like that all the time when they view the finished house. Too bad there's really nothing that makes me that impressed.

Oh wait.

I think RuTracker might have some stuff? But better yet just get Spotify, you can use it for free with ads, and it has tonnes of traditional music. Alan Lomax's collection is free also:

Holy shit Frankie Knuckles is a genius
>>
>>71705959
Elaborating on this a bit:

Check out this kinda generic Nu-Disco/electropop hit from the mid/late-2000s:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQ2jNLyJpkg

It's nothing incredible really, but the Frankie Knuckles remix makes so few subtle changes to the song and reworks the whole progression and really breathes new life into the song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4MymPStabI

I need to give "Greatest Hits From Trax" a thorough relisten sometime soon.
