haha i made this in paint

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Woolite recs:
>Curtis Mayfield - Roots (1971)
The three-song streak of "We Got to Have Peace", "Beautiful Brother of Mine" and "Now You're Gone" was phenomenal. Very moving soul. The other tracks were decent, but none of them affected me the way the aforementioned three did.
7

Darklands recs:
>Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - Strangers From the Universe (1994)
This was a fun listen. The first two tracks started this off amazingly, and all of the actual songs were pretty great. "Socket" drew obvious influence from Sister Ray, one of my all-time favorite songs, which is a plus. But the 'feller-filler' dragged this down just a notch.
8

Letov recs:
>Coil - ...And the Ambulance Died in His Arms (2005)
"Triple Sun" was one of my favorites on Ape of Naples, so I got a musical erection when I saw that there were two different versions (including a 14 minute version) of it on here. It did not disappoint. For some reason I loved the parts when Jhonn interacted with the crowd. Track two was slightly less amazing than the rest, but I loved this anyway.
8

yamir recs:
>DJ Playero - Playero 37-Underground (1992)
This was actually... not bad. Pretty jammin'. A few of the vocalists were annoying, and the recurring beat got slightly worn down as it went on, but I liked it.
6
>>
>>71554099
Nice, glad you liked the Mayfield! That stretch is actually one of my favorites in soul, totally agree. That might actually be his weakest record I've heard so far but I figured it was probably a good intro if you've never heard a full album

Whooo baby, it’s time for my 2500th rating and it’s a good ‘un. Lengthy and likely boring review ahead.

[1/2]

John Coltrane - Live at The Village Vanguard
>Modal Jazz, Post-Bop

Man, it’s hard to top the pure brilliance of Live at Birdland or Impressions but this comes damn close at times. This may not be the classic quartet at their finest but I really loved moments. This is kind of toward the beginning of their time together, recorded sometime between the recording of Ole and Coltrane (‘62). Jimmy Garrison isn’t actually credited as the main bassist so I’m not sure if he’s on every track. Regardless, their chemistry is still on point.

Oh man, this kicks off with “Spiritual” which is a hellll of a track. It has that eastern spiritual flair that’s all over Birdland/Impressions but it’s somehow more peaceful. Trane kicks it off with some fantastic work on the soprano, hands the reigns to Eric Dolphy, who rips it up on the bass clarinet and then comes back with a nice bluesy sesh on the tenor. Dolphy randomly popping up for a solo and then just disappearing for the set is probably the best part of this. It’s one of the finest moments, sure. But I’d like to think he was hanging out in the background during the entire performance, just to pop up for one solo.

[2/2]

That being said, McCoy Tyner might actually be the standout. He has a great solo on the opener. And on “Softly as a Morning Sunrise”, he has this fantastic jaunty, bluesy solo that’s absolutely killer. It’s really some of the happiest jazz I’ve heard him play, bouncing around and avoiding the usual percussive approach. He’s definitely played more powerful music in the past but this is still some of his finest in another way. When Coltrane finally comes in on the soprano, the tension is built up and it’s a huge relief to hear him join. And there’s something weirdly entertaining to hear Trane wail and almost noodle around on the soprano. It’s not too common an instrument so I bet that’s part of it.

The closer, “Chasin the Trane” is the lengthiest cut on here. Elvin Jones is slamming on the drums, providing a chaotic atmosphere. Most of the track is just Trane wandering about on the soprano, screeching, honking and such. Until the last few minutes of the track, I didn’t really think of it as free jazz though, it’s some of the catchiest jazz I’ve heard that’s this adventurous. He gradually builds into the chaos, it almost took me a moment to notice. If this were a movie moment, it’d be Marty McFly rolling around on the ground with a guitar - except for about 10 minutes.

I can only imagine what the hell was going through the heads of the audience in 1961.

Delroy Edwards - White Owl
>Outsider/Ghetto, Techno/House

So Edwards’ “4 Club Use Only” is one of my favorite releases of the 2010s, and probably my favorite release from L.I.E.S., competing for both with Tzu Sing’s “A Name Out of Place, Pt. II”. And I mention Tzu Sing because White Owl sees Edwards moving towards a more towering, edgy, Tzu Sing-esque sound on this EP. Unlike on 4 Club Use Only, which prominently features odd rhythms and multiple prominent and pretty synth lines, White Owl is a much more standard, hard-edged Ghetto Tech affair. It’s all bass and snare here, with minimal synth accompaniment (that’s little synth involvement, not incorporation of the minimal synth genre).

Unfortunately, it’s a much more commonplace sound, and the songs aren’t as interesting, even if they do hit harder. The progression on “Drop Dead” has been done a million times by now, even if it does get kind of interesting and fun by the end. Probably won’t be returning to this, even if it does have some nice beats.

pretty minor update but

>Tirogo - Float
Pretty standard afro-psych stuff, some nice funky grooves but not particularly distinctive.

>VA - Mystic Fiddle of the Proto-Gypsies
I want to love this record largely because the name is so good. After a couple of listens I can't decide whether this album is completely transcendental or just okay. 3.5 feels right as a semi-placeholder until I decide.

I've also bumped Complete Guide to Insufficiency up .5 because I'm in love with that record.

Getting to near the point of out of my comfort zone a bit with the chart, which is kind of the point but the pace is definitely slowing while I internalise stuff.

>>

aight

so zane:
fitting the psychological horror theme the first two tracks work in much the same way of just brooding on an atmosphere and playing some vague samples over, i can see some thought went into that
that nww track was actually pretty cool wtf, way to go and judge a band with a discog like that by 2 and a half boring-ass albums, dumb trans. okay that distorted beat's getting redundant though and the interjection with samples became more predictable too
the silent hill thing is weird af and continues this vocal sample thing hmm
not that i could make out a theme or an arc for myself but just that alone's cool enough
the gero track's some hell driver stuff and it sucks
the jason crumer track's really uncomfortable though wew

alright i'm decided this is already more of my thing than the ones by pom and rod so zzane wins in a 3way and gets a mixtape whenever
i mean i already got a fat one by jimml the other year

What did you think of Gary Numan? For me some of the tracks are great (Metal, Cars, etc.) but a lot of the album morphs into one song in my head.
>>
>>71563066
You can tell he is (or at least was) a musician that found a formula he enjoyed and worked with that formula in quite a few of his songs. I guess I can see why you'd say it all blurred into one, but for me I liked his formula enough to enjoy the majority of the tracks. I wasn't expecting there to be instrumental tracks and to be honest I think the music works a lot better with his vocals, just the same as how it is with Pet Sounds in my opinion.

I'd been put off Zen Arcade for a while because I tend to stray from albums longer than 40 minutes (Jangle, ignore this) but I was really pleased with it. I think the varying lengths of tracks made it interesting the whole way through, alongside the fact that it certainly wasn't typical hardcore punk. There was influences from a lot of different styles, I think, and the fact that the album carried a story throughout was a nice addition.

breakthrough and head south are contenders too though. I only heard lonesome crowded west after that, was pretty forgettable for me but willing to try it again in time. probably need the right mood for it to hit since it's so similar to long drive, on the surface at least.

I finished the 2016 thing, heard more than 700 in the end... took a break and then my friend asked me to team up and do something for 2017, so I've been doing that for about a month now, better at controlling myself now though.

I never really thought of his videos as "reviews" per se, they just seemed like fun comedy videos centered around games.
I like his style a lot, he is really earnest and his comedy is really dry. I also like that he kind of just does his own thing; kids games, dollar bin crap, old pc stuff. God knows we don't need another youtuber playing some flavor of the month horror game. Also his production got a lot better, he's got a really nice vintage 90's style (you can tell he takes a lot of inspiration from MST3K) and a new shows where he reviews old shitty instructional VHS tapes.

>Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline

Hey I liked this! I wasn't a huge fan of "
The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid", but this clicked. It was warm, dreamy, and beautiful. I could see myself liking this even more after more relistens.

4/5
>Peter Sotos - Buyer's Market

First off, I say this very very rarely, but I'm not sure if I even consider this music.. it really walks the line at least. It's hard to rate because of that, and I don't think it, musically speaking, should be rated amongst the better albums I've listened to.

Whatever it is, it is just really depressing to listen to, and honestly it made me really sad that these things happen. It emotionally affected me, which is what I usually want music to do to me. Again though, I don't think it deserves to be rated high amongst actual music. Also it definitely shouldn't have been as long as it was. It was really hard to rate.

easyFun - easyFun EP (2013)
>wonky, bubblegum bass

I'm not even a big fan of this and my expectations were still shattered, so that's saying something. I figured that a poorly-rated EP in a genre that I really don't care about would really rub me the wrong way, and that's /kinda/ the case. I hate "Shrek 5", "Easy Money", and "Multislice". They seem unfinished, they all try to take the genre of wonky to its wonkiest extremes but this is done in the most irritating, amateur way possible. "Sondico" and "Infinity Glisten", on the other hand, are pretty nice. They're the most vaporwave influenced tracks on the album, and the production drastically improves with this increased focused on samples. It does what good vaporwave should do, it effectively takes old work and transforms it into something new, while creating one hell of a hazy aesthetic, although these tracks definitely occupy a much more upbeat, danceable form of vaporwave, not too far removed from the excellent works of Vaperror. "Infinity Glisten" in particular is great, sounds like it's straight out of an SNES game. These tracks are diamonds in the rough, but they're not all that, and the rough is pretty fuckin' bad.

2.0

Charli XCX - Vroom Vroom (2016)
>bubblegum bass, electropop

SOPHIE dominates the sound here, but even a charismatic vocal performance from Charli XCX can't save how terrible these beats are, and I'm a decent fan of SOPHIE. They still have shades of the more experimental sounds from his solo stuff, but as a whole the beats are too out there to function well as pop and too daft and poppy to function well as an experimental work. There's not a single memorable moment on this thing, and the way most of these tracks keep on shifting around aimlessly really grates. It also has a tendency to build to something nice and banging but then reverting back to the same shitty beat that's been going on for half the song, which is the irritating cherry on top of this shitty album.

>The Strokes - Is This It

In the end, Is This It is the single record that “got me into music.” The power Pandora radio possessed over me in 2013 is a bit staggering now - when “Someday” came on, it was what some call a revelation. For a two-year span, Is This It was my musical world, the only object of my sonic affection, alongside all of the other Strokes records (which I will die defending, bar perhaps Angles). Of course, my obsession with Casablancas’s brand of indie rock eventually led me down the music rabbit hole. (cont)
>>
>>71567635
Everyone always talks about how the Strokes were marketed entirely on the “cool NYC sex” image, how Julian’s daddy-bought leather jacket was worth more than most of their contemporary indie bands combined, and how “fun” Is This It was. More in-depth reviewers talk about how “tight” the record sounds (which it does) before referring to Casablancas’s voice as a “growl” (which it is). They’re all correct, but they neglect to mention how Casablancas’s arrangements perfectly complement the production, or how his ridiculous vocal charisma carries the entire band on its back, or how meticulous and careful his songwriting is. That last point is the most important, and why I’d lick Julian’s musical boots if I had the chance; every song, every melody on the record is endlessly catchy, to the point where calling Is This It something close to pop perfection isn’t unreasonable. >>71567651
The hits of Is This It are obvious: “Someday” with its nostalgic chord progression and wistful lyrics, the driving drum machine and irresistible riff that comprise “Hard to Explain,” the dance-worthy “Last Nite.” Casablancas’s voice propels these songs with roars and snarks alike, imbuing passion into melodic peaks (“I’m working so I won’t have to try SO hard”; “Was an HONEST MAN”). Each minuscule vocal nuance adds that much more character, makes each song that small bit more fun to listen to and strain to sing along with. “Someday” is the best thing Casablancas has written; the melodic turn and vocal tone of “I think I’ll be alright” puts a faraway look in any teen’s eye. There’s maybe one song on Is This It that could be called a deep cut - “Trying Your Luck” - and even that’s got a seductive lead guitar line that grows from urgency to mania over the course of the track’s 3 and a half minute runtime. The overlooked classics of the album are just that: “Alone, Together” has the single best moment of the album - the whole band becomes electrified at once as Casablancas roars about killing to survive - alongside the album’s single best guitar solo. The rhythm guitar shifts from blurry lo-fi to visceral as “Soma” descends gradually into frenzy, frenetic drums under Julian’s full-bodied howl. Even “New York City Cops,” in all its lyrical banality, has a moment of sheer brilliance when Casablancas announces his departure to end a simple drum solo. (cont)

Really, Is This It is an album made up of moments; raw moments of melodic brilliance made gritty and emotional by way of Casablancas’s vocal delivery. If anything, Is This It proves Julian’s fiendish mastery of songcraft - no song outstays its welcome but there’s certainly no lack for material. The guitar parts weave in and out of one another seamlessly, driving and melodic at the same time, as the bass provides consistently catchy riffs. It’s the work of someone who’s studied the subject, and, given his music-based education, Casablancas certainly has. People describe Is This It as loose and off-the-cuff because of its execution, and not its craft; in reality, it’s meticulous, the work of someone obsessed with deconstructing and recreating the garage-rock he loved. Is This It stands as a landmark record of the 00s, the cleanest dirty pop out there as crafted by the genius of a drunk rich kid from New York.

Wasn't really my thing, but I can understand why this is so /rym/core. To me it just felt like an hour long cheesy jam session. Honestly though it's pretty unique, and although it's cheesy, i'm glad I got to listen to it.

Nicely put, that's a big reason why I love the album so much. It feels like Casablancas put so much time into orchestrating everything on the album. Great review dude.

Boots for Dancing - The Undisco Kidds (recorded 1980-82, released 2015)
>funk, post-punk, GOAT-core

What do LCD Soundsystem, Talking Heads, and the Rezillos have in common? On the surface, nothing, but they are all on the tapestry of music artfully pieced together by “Dancin’” Dave Carson, bandleader of Scotland's very own Boots for Dancing.

Born out of a loose, incestuous collective of Scottish artists circa 1978-1979, Boots for Dancing enjoyed a successful, albeit mercurial, run from 1979 thru 1982, going all the way from frequently gigging all around Caledonia to opening for Talking Heads at the Hammersmith Palais (or was it the Odeon?) in 1980 for the New York band’s Remain in Light tour, barnstorming London, but hardly gaining them any fame. The group added and lost many members throughout its history, from The Rezillos’ (And Dare-era The Human League) Jo Callis (Guitar and mentorship, 1979-1982), to The Amazing Dickie Fusco (Percussion, 1981-1982), to Delta 5’s Graeme “Pogo” High (Guitar 1979 to April 1980); all of these members contributed something unique to the group, from pyrotechnics to mentorship. The early gigging helped Boots for Dancing achieve a very tight live sound, which helped them emerge onto the stage already sounding like a live band, as well as to catch the ear of one John Peel. Peel would eventually capture three sessions for Boots for Dancing in about half as many years, showcasing their breadth of style from Funk- to Folk-tinged Post-Punk.

I would best describe the album as “Punk Disco”, something similar but less bass-y than PiL. The best example of the sound I’m trying to describe is the entirety of the A-side of the record, recorded in 1982 at Maida Vale with the fourth or fifth, but definitely last, lineup of Boots for Dancing. “Salt in the Ocean” pits manic Afrobeat-esque percussion and drumming against textbook Post-Punk jangle guitar with some jazzy-disco keyboard thrown in for good measure. On paper, it’s not supposed to work, it was never intended to work, but it did and it still does. “The Pleasure Chant” is another cut that deserves praise, with its boppin’ bass and four-on-the-floor drums aping disco, but the guitar screaming out in PiL-ish. The smart lyrics reflect the late 70s-early 80s’ disaffection with the social norm, the rejection of the spoon-fed anodyne comfort of the powers that be.

The sound of Boots for Dancing does it for me. It’s infectious good times, amplified by a shitty Sound City amp. Turned up to eleven. Compressed to the nth dimension. Fucked up beyond relief. Funkified and rarefied. I love every second of it and you should, too.

Nice review. Your point about the meticulous nature of the songwriting is bang on but it's also why I like, not love, The Strokes. The songs are catchy but it feels just slightly too calculated for a genre I love for it's looseness.

Tetsu Inoue - World Receiver (1996)
>ambient

A bit weaker than Ambient Otaku, but this is still lovely. This is a perfect encapsulation of that mid to late-'90s idea of what the future would be like, the sound of the drones fit that aesthetic perfectly. Not very original compositionally, but it's incredibly serene music and it's futuristic aesthetic makes it a lot more evocative than most other ambient releases, and the field recordings are a perfect fit, same with the rather sparse excursions into glitch. Triangle, if you like this, make sure to check out Ambient Otaku.

Tomita - Pictures at an Exhibition
>Progressive Electronic, Modern Classical

So different than the Abbado orchestral version of this, it’s hard to compare. Instead of a traditional assortment of strings and woodwinds, Tomita tackles this album with a number of synths, as you’d expect. He uses a number of other analog synths, most notably a moog, to create his own interpretation of the music. Most of the time, it sounds clunky and dated, with some of the synths really lagging compared to an orchestra. In fact, it’s often jarring, with his interpretation of tracks like “Promenade” feeling mechanical… almost metallic in a weird way. It has its moments though, with the second half of “The Old Castle” floating along in this mystical, psychedelic haze. And on “Tuileries” and “Bydlo” the moog has a bouncy, almost bubbly quality that sounds a lot like early video game music, which I quite like.

However, these moments are far less than that of Snowflakes Are Dancing. Maybe it’s the actual compositions that I preferred, not just Tomita’s synth work.

Cool in concept, with some great moments. But all in all, it’s pretty okay.

Pet Shop Boys - Very
>Synthpop, Dance Pop

I’m not the biggest fan of the synthpop scene or dance music in general but this is pretty tight. The production feels very 80s (even though this is from ‘94) and that was certainly a drawback. That being said, this has some awesome, catchy melodies. The opener, “Can You Forgive Her?” is as melancholic as I’ve heard a synthpop track. I can’t quite decide if I should get up and dance to it or mope around after a breakup. It has an odd vibe.

“I Wouldn’t Normally Do This Kind of Thing” has a bouncy bassline, some cool horns and a very 90s drum machine that just flies around the track. It’s a good representation of what makes this style and group in particular, work. There’s an incredibly upbeat vibe, which matched with the weaving melodies and complex instrumentation (for this style), works so well. It reminds me a lot of Screamadelia, where it’s catchy danceable stuff but there’s more layers than you’d expect out of anything in this genre.

It’s a bit too 90s for me, stylistically speaking. But there’s some undeniably catchy tracks regardless.

Sufjan Stevens - All Delighted People EP (2010)
>chamber pop, singer/songwriter, progressive folk

On par, if not better, than Illinois. The title track and it's "classic rock" redux are both among Stevens' best songs, featuring impeccable arrangements, catchy melodies, and some really shockingly tasteful use of usually cheesy instrumentation on the latter. The shorter, folkier tracks are all pretty and well-done, but Stevens' vocals are somehow kind of a low point. I usually /love/ him as a singer, but his vocals seem very erratic and all over the place here, he switches between his chest voice and his falsetto far too often for the falsetto to pack any impact ("oh my gooooooood") and it gets a bit grating after a while. They're still good, but it's probably his weakest vocal performance on record. The EP closes with "Djohariah", a decent track but one that I find kind of overrated. It repeats itself far too often to justify its length and it never really embraces its repetitive nature, making for a bit of an ill-defined track that I don't really think stands tall with the rest of the EP's tracks. Besides this track and the oddly mediocre vocal performance from Stevens', this is beautiful, impeccably-arranged stuff.

Zappa / Beefheart / Mothers - Bongo Fury (1975)
>jazz-rock

The first two tracks and the opener are really damn cool. "Willie the Pimp" is one of my favorite Zappa tracks, hearing Beefheart mesh with Zappa's jazzy solos is something I've always wanted more of since hearing that track, and these tracks scratch that itch of mine perfectly. The rest of the album isn't that hot. It's a lot more focused on humor, so naturally I'm not that big into it, and it's kinda weird how Beefheart's delivery doesn't work very well with Zappa's compositions and lyrics. "Advance Romance" is a nice, but kinda soulless, jam, and there's nothing really /terrible/ (well, "Poofter's Froth Wyoming Plans Ahead", maybe), but it's all just a whole bunch of typical Zappa humor that's never resonated with me and that never will. But the Hot Rats-esque tracks? Killer stuff. Shame it doesn't make up more of the album.

easyFun - Deep Trouble (2015)
>bubblegum bass

I actually think that the first EP is a lot more interesting that this, production wise. This is definitely more enjoyable, but it just seems like a very standard bubblegum bass release. Shimmering synths, pitched-up English vocals, all the characteristics are here, but nothing about it stands out. The first track is a fine tune, but the remaining two are definitely pretty lesser in quality, which seems to be a problem with a lot of releases by PC Music. It's alright, I just can't get into this genre for the life of me.

Boots for Dancing - The Undisco Kids
>Dance-Punk, Post-Punk, New Wave, Disco

The stylistic missing link between virtually anything James Murphy lists as a major influence. Danceable, driving grooves reminiscent of disco propel these songs forward at blazing speeds while angular, Television-esque guitars shimmer and riff in the background. Meanwhile the lead singer is often caught doing his best impression of David Byrne—mixed with a bit of Morrissey’s moaning intonations.

The songwriting here is sharp though. Talking Heads wish they were this tight and groovy—even at their grooviest, on Remain in Light, they tend to have a looser, fuller sound. Boots for Dancing, far from full and bombastically Eno-produced, instead carry the lightness and stark simplicity of a well-refined punk outfit. (Television, again, comes to mind—and maybe ’77 Talking Heads.) Pretty much every song is at least somewhat catchy, and fairly distinct. I actually am having a hard time deciding if these songs are too samey or adequately unique, so I guess that’s some sort of feat.

Some particular highlights: I love the neurotic repetition and climax of “Timeless Tonight”. The tense choruses on “Wild Jazz Summers” are fantastic, with those background vocal vamps—best break on the whole album too, with those intense drums. “Money (Is Thin on the Ground)” also has some great backing vocal additions.

While not exactly revolutionary for dance-punk, it sure as fuck beats Liquid Liquid.

I've not listened to much of traditional folk but I love these native american dances using post-colonial instruments, in this case a harp and violin. I've listened to a couple using traditional drums, rattles and flutes but they don't manage to have the joy that these dances have. The solo harp piece Paloma particularly is god damn beautiful and while repetitive the dances have enough melodic variation to stay interesting, I wish a lot of them went on longer. More shouting over bass grooves and drum loops from the Mods. There is a slight change in style, more synths, dubby reverb and smatterings of singing pop up.
