Joe Satriani plays 4 chords and wanks for 3-5 minutes. Steve Vai composes music and works in all sorts of clever playing styles and phrasing. It's apples and oranges.

IDK i think Satriani is just wanking with some violins underneath. It was painful to listen to some song about God he did, can't recall the name.

Eric Johnson will always be the supreme guitar player because his music is actually good and the guitar playing compliments it as opposed to just showing off.

I need your help /gg/. I'm trying to remember a multifx pedal I've heard of before. It had the ability to control multiple parameters at the same time bound to the expression pedal, a chord sustain feature, and really lousy distortion. I believe it was a fairly old pedal. It was a full size multifx, probably 4-8 footswitches plus the expression pedal. Anyone got any ideas on this?

I saw it in a video posted here a while back, maybe a year ago. Old video of a guy explaining why he used multifx pedals. Professionally filmed.

I'm pretty sure that can do what I mentioned but I am thinking of an older pedal. I'm not sure if you can adjust more than one parameter simultaneously with the expression pedal on the GT-10 or not.

It might be an older boss one. I don't think old zoom pedals can do 2 parameters at once.

He's mastered his instrument to a degree that, frankly, embarrasses me. I am totally in awe of his ability to transfer the contents of his head to and through his guitar. It's astonishing really. Too bad there's nothing interesting going on in that head.
>>
>>71534752
The fact that Vai has never looked out into his audience, thought "Holy fuck! I have dedicated my life to turning-on pubescent boys!", thrown his 'axe' to the floor and sworn never to play another note is somewhat telling I think.
>>
>>71534763
Part 1

A high school bandmate got really, really into instrumental wank guitarists, he even bought a replica of Vai's Ibanez Gem to replace his Strat, much to all of our dismay. I've heard solid chunks of his career, but the only thing I can remember at the moment is "For The Love Of God" loses whatever "power" the guitar melody has as Vai goes into overly complicated lick after lick. It's the same thing that makes Jeff Beck's instrumental career such a colossal drag; the moments of actual brilliance are drowned out and neutered by suppressing the band for the sake of highlighting the guitar.

I saw Vai live too, last year. The, um, "Generation Axe Tour." Vai, Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt, Zakk Wylde, and Tobin Abasi from Animals As Leaders.

My former bandmate bought two tickets and asked me to go with him, and I figured there might be some moment where ridiculous instrumental prowess clicks and I "get" Vai and company. That didn't happen, but we were treated to the bizarre metalcore rhythms of Abasi, the 80's hard rock-hey-wait-this-isn't-terrible schtick of Bettencourt, and Zakk Wylde covering Sabbath and Thin Lizzy.

Abasi and Bettencourt had a duet of some Animals As Leaders tune that featured a riff I wished I could play - the only time that happened in the whole 3 hour event. Wylde, who I actually was looking forward to a little, was a total disappointment. I think he's had the best career of any of those dudes, but the Zakk Wylde we got was the pinch harmonic bullshit dude who's best left to solo on a Nickelback tune. "NIB" sounded cool until the solos, though.
>>
>>71534810
Part 2

Then Yngwie Malmsteen came on.

I've never heard someone assault an audience with such reckless fervor of anti-music until that Norwegian took the stage. Half an hour of white noise would've at least inspired thought, contemplation; instead he just did run after run down the guitar neck, spun it, kicked a pick into the audience, throw it to the roadie, repeat with new guitar. I was angry, frustrated, bewildered. There was no where to go, the bar was serving $8 Bud Light (hellloooooo theatre gigs in Cincinnati!) and the bathroom wasn't nearly insulated enough to save me from the barrage emanating from the stage. If I am truly just a brain in vat only responding to electrical stimuli, the scientists must've been feeling particularly sadistic that evening.

So yeah, when Steve Vai came on - what with his stupid fan under the pedalboard, the snarky comment on how "it wasn't cool to know how to play guitar in the 90's," and tremolo arm animal noises - I was grateful Malmsteen was gone. Is there melody in Vai's playing? Sure, absolutely, it was the most of that entire night. But it's still a far cry from the classical composition it aspires to, it still reeked of ego, and it definitely did not rock.

Compare that Wes Montgomery, or Roy Buchanan, or Lonnie Mack, or any of the surf instrumentalists. They sound like they actually enjoy music, not the accolades you can pick up from making it.
>>
>>71534820
>"it wasn't cool to know how to play guitar in the 90's,"

Lol it must torment him every day of his life that his one really successful solo album came out the year before Grunge/Alternative broke out.

I know you guys like to meme on anyone playing the minor pentatonic blues scale BUT
Have you ever tried playing it without emphasizing the root of the chord underneath? And have you ever tried it in anything but the "standard" position where the root is index finger on E string? I'm thinking about shifting my hand down four frets so the root is the middle finger on the g string. In A you'd play in the first position which allows using open strings and puts all the bends (from minor 3rd, from 4th, from 6th and from 7th) on either the ring finger or extended pinky (5th fret) which could be interesting.

Not retarded, but it sounds unnecessary. As someone who bought a 100 watt head and a cab I can say it's not even necessary if you're in a band and playing out. It just made loading my shit up that much harder.

Also, I got a Marshall and hated the tone so that may be another big factor into why I disliked the whole experience so much. But yeah, I'd say get a decent combo amp unless you find yourself in a situation where you feel a 100 watt amp is absolutely necessary.

Try going for an amp that has pentode/triode switching option or some other way to reduce power if you want. A lot prefer the sound, me included, it sounds fresher. A bit more subjective answer would be, that m7s are used a lot as a II in II V I, which if it's ionian, makes sense to use dorian on the two.

So what's the best way to learn the guitar neck note by note?

Do I start with some scales or do I just go string by string? Or what else?
>>
>>71538317
I think an easy way to start is to just go string by string and learn what the names of the notes are on only the frets with inlays.

Then once you have that down, learn all the natural notes on each string. There'll be some overlap here with stuff you already learned from the first exercise.
>>
>>71538352

I'll try that then

Hey. I haven't played guitar in 10 years and want to get back into it. My budget is about 800 canadian for both the amp and guitar. I was looking at the Epiphone SG G-400 Pro and an orange practice amp, coming to 760 total. I've always wanted a gibson SG but will never be able to afford one unless I starved myself for months.

Are epiphone trash, though? My only ever guitar was a squier bullet and it was terrible but it worked fine for the punk rock I was playing. Now my musical tastes are much more eclectic and I'd like to be able to play metal, rock, and post-punk, everything basically. My favorite band is Joy Division.

I almost bought a Kramer Pacer Classic but I'd probably get bored with having that hair metal sound all the time.
>>
>>71539352
SG are nice, epiphone is fine but you'll have your memesters in this thread tell you they're only good for firewood or whatever. you just need a really wide and grippy strap because the bodies are lighter than the neck making the neck "dive" if you're not supporting it
>>
vai>srv
>>
>>71534013
If you mean For the Love of God than you're confusing Vai and Satch.
>>
>>71539352

Epiphones are fine but you might be even better off with something with a trem bar. Stuff like Yamaha Pacifica, with a trem and a humbucker, will be quite good for versatility without breaking a bank.
>>
>>71534752
>nothing interesting going on in that head.

As far as wankers go, Vai is by far the most interesting. He has some really interesting and strange songs. If anything he has a twisted imagination and the weirdness of Zappa rubbed off on him to a degree.
>>
>>71533118

the meme that somehow Steve Vai sucks is borne of OP's own shortcomings and insecurities.

You may not like his like his music but to deny he is extremely talented musician with exceptional musical understanding is just pleb-tier trolling. Its like saying Paganini sucks cuz he plays too many notes.
>>
>>71539436
My other plan was getting the kramer pacer classic and then later on replacing the floyd rose with an original and adding seymour duncan pickups (in 80s neon color bobbins). Would be a bad ass shredder guitar.
>>
>>71535668
It depends on whether or not you're wanting a cool amp which also happens to be 100W in which case you should buy an attenuator but if you just want 100W because it's 100W it's not worth it unless you want super clean signal which is loud enought to keep up with a drummer.

If you get really good at tapping and legato and sweeps, you can play some pretty fast stuff without having to get the pick hand speed thing down. It feels to me like picking speed and ability to cross strings quickly and accurately is something some people are endowed with. I've done practice regimens trying to hone my picking speed and it never seems to develop as fast as some other people get theirs down.

Vai is really more of a "guitarists guitarist". The majority of people who get really into him appreciate the talent and understanding he has of the instrument in addition to the music itself. It's not always something that can be thrown on in the background, as there will likely be someone to go "WTF IS this!?" by the time Vai starts abusing the whammy bar and wah pedal.

That being said, I agree with you that Vai stands out from most other "shredder" guys and that he isn't a typical "wanking in different modes" for 5 minutes player.

But he still plays a type of music that doesn't have a broad appeal.
>>
>>71541772
>>71541772
IT can take a while so be patient. Also, don't go into guitar trying to learn that shit right away or making it your top priority. I've seen a lot of beginner/intermediate players who were shit but could play some fast "shredder" type stuff (albeit horribly) yet they couldn't change between basic chord without struggling and pausing to make sure their fingers were places right. It's a bit embarrassing.
>>
>>71542178
>Vai is really more of a "guitarists guitarist". The majority of people who get really into him appreciate the talent and understanding he has of the instrument

Wew lad, yeah you're so smart for being able to appreciate the musicianship of Vai. This is the kind of shit that exposes you as a 15 year old beginner guitarist.

One day you'll move on from instrumental Rock/Metal wankery to Fusion, then to Jazz and finally you'll either get some real taste and realize there's more to music than "skill" or you'll remain a virgin forever.

Ordering guitars online alway worries me a bit. Sweetwater seem pretty trustworthy though. I can't imagine them ripping you off or anything.

I would suggest checking Reverb.com. They have a lot of used stuff but the best deals are usually finding something that's in "mint" condition. It's essentially new but the price will be knocked down a bit. I saved $100 that way and when I got the guitar it was still in the original packaging.

>>71543518
>it sounds like something you come up with while warming up during practice

>>
>>71543518

He's noodling on a 12 bar blues. The only thing tying it together and making it something more special than a noodle is the repeating melodic motif played with octave dyads. Also Hendrix's noodles usually sound better than most others' noodles.
>>
>>71543518
To be fair I (or my bandmates) have come up with some great ideas just jamming around during practice. A lot of times it's a mess but sometimes you just get lucky and everyone meshes perfectly and you play something amazing.

That being said I would never claim to hit Hendrix levels just fucking around before practice.
>>

Yeah, demand an unopened one from the back or tell them to order one in to the store and come back to get it the next week. It's worth the wait. You could also ask for a discount for the one on the rack but they probably won't go for that even though that should be something they automatically do. I mean, it is a fucking USED guitar.

Any time I've bought from GC they ALWAYS say "Oh this is the last one we have!" and try to push the display guitar on me. Every fucking time, they're so full of shit.
>>
>>71543694
nah you want to actively look for signs of damage so they'll discount

>I mean, it is a fucking USED guitar.

Right. I've seen guitars in the used section that are in better shape than the guitars Guitar Center keep out on their racks. At least the used guitar had the possibility of being owned by a responsible adult who took care of his shit. The guitar center guitars were probably played by 14 year old autistic kids with ketchup on their fingers.

Satriani is a better songwriter IMO. But I like Vai very much.

I'm a pop-punk guy myself (bass and vocals). Our guitarist/vocalist can play Iron Maiden solos like it was nothing, and our drummer can play anything from steely dan to annihilator. With some bands the skill is definitely there, we just have an appreciation for simpler relatable music.
>>
>>71544319
Reminds me of Korn's cover of Metallica's One. When they get to the second solo, the song just ends. It's hilariously tragic.

He is an acquired taste for sure- the dude is wacky but the meme that he is just a wanker with no feels or subtly is simply not born out by his body of work. There is a lot of wankery to be sure....campy, hedonistic, tongue in cheek wankery...but there is also a lot more going on, a lot of big picture stuff that is just a little odd cuz he is a little odd but most virtuosos are a little odd. Passion and Warfare was an interesting concept album with a flow to the entire album...it was a brilliant album.

I cant understand how someone can listen to this and at least respect the imagination as much as the skills. There isnt even any guitar for even the first 3 minutes yet its still interesting song writing.

If Steve Vai and shred as a whole are such acquired tastes, why do their fans get so bitchy and defensive when people rip on them? I love punk, but I'm not gonna fault anyone who thinks it's too simplistic nor start posting videos and going all "NUH UH"

Nobody is getting bitchy about people not liking Steve Vai. It's just annoying that the only reason people give for him being shit is that he's a wanky noodler who can't write a good song.

It's like people think he just plays really fast for 5 minutes with no thought.

The biggest accomplishment of Steve Vais career was introducing Devin Townsend to the world
>>
>>71543466
I do, it's great. I go to guitar center and play the few I'm considering, and then order through sweetwater. They also have a policy where you can return your guitar if you're not satisified within 30 days, and you get full value minus the cost to ship it. Great customer service. I've only made 2 purchases, but my friend has over 10+ guitars and he swears by them. Reverb is a little shaky, some shops don't list out the specifics of what they're selling so definitely call in advanced and make sure that what you are ordering is what you want.

he's right you know, you can take him otu of context and pretend he said "dont learn theory" but what he's getting at is exactly right.
personally I don't think its half as impressive when someone says "oh listen to this other persons music i can play" any dumb fuck can read tab and practice. Finding the right note for thte right moment is what seperates a shit guitarist from a bad one.
