>This one-of-a-kind guitar was hand-made in the Dean custom shop in Tampa back when Dean Zelinsky was still building USA customs himself. It’s unique because not only is it a rare one-pickup V, but there are also NO KNOBS or knob holes or switches drilled into the beautiful maple top. The pickup is wired directly to the jack leaving the pure unadulterated tone of this incredible guitar to blaze unrestricted and unchained. Combined with the super-skinny neck (Dean Zelinski has really small hands), the direct-wired pickup makes this axe a go-to weapon of choice on all recent Nile albums. It’s responsible for MANY classic Nile tracks.

Is Karl Sanders onto something here? Has anyone else removed or bypassed their knobs?

I'm trying to get a kind of modern rock sound. My current amp is a raven, but I'm not too impressed with it. It's just okay.
I play mostly at home so I don't need anything as loud as my raven. I was looking at some those small marshalls like pic related.

For something that small you'll be fine with just about anything I think. I would just look up youtube videos of people playing them or comparing different amps.

However, I'm not sure I would say Marshall is the best bet for a "modern" rock sound. They're better for a 70s - 80s tone.

M8, don't even bother. You'll never be able to use that if you play a show somewhere and you'll probably get laughed at if you bring that thing to jam with someone.

If you want a cheap amp that actually sounds good get a modeling amp like a fender mustang. OR get a 40 watt combo tube amp like a marshall DSL40c.

>>
>>71410436
Kek this was my first Amp. It was between this or a Fender Frontman 25w but my dad didn't wanna cough up the extra $25. I wish I knew more about Amps because I could've gotten something a lot better for $80-$100
>>
>>71410140
>Has anyone else removed or bypassed their knobs?
Jake E. Lee for example, removed tone on his signature because he "never found any used for it". Basically it comes to style in music and playing, if you don't ever cut or mold your tone on the fly, it's pointless to have the damn thing on.
But that being said, having an ability to cut the feed is pretty good idea, and tone shaping is a good way to bring in some extra depth to your playing, instead of relying just on your pedals.

Physically removing the knobs from the chain has a minimal effect, it reduces some resistance from the circuitry but it's negligible gain in your overall chain of pre-amps , distortion and boosts.

Yes. You can even split the channels and have separate fx chains for each. Even the free version comes with an good amp set and a few of the weirder processors, sequenced gating, arpegiated flanger etc. Plus a load of song/artist presets.

http://thestereobus.com/2008/02/24/whats-this-class-a-class-ab-class-b-stuff/

Class A amplifies the whole signal wave, the amp running all the time - sounds good, inefficent. Class B have separate elements for the signal parts, efficient, but introduces distortion. A/B combines the best of both.

What should one learn beyond scales to improve note selection?
>>
>>71410254
>>71410304
Can anyone elaborate on this? I've heard that the more pickups you have the more they will pull on the strings resulting in less sustain and overall inferior tone, which is why some guitarists rip out all but one pickup
It sort of makes sense but really how much of a difference is there between something like a double humbucker set up and an H/S/H or even three humbuckers? I'm really curious as I'm thinking of getting a guitar with H/S/H pups
>>
>>71411266

>>
>>71412240
You can also play scales in intervals once you learn both. You would play the given interval after each note of the scale and then move onto the next note in the scale playing the given interval after each note.
>>
>>71411682
>two completely different guitars
>always compared

By all means get one of each and use each one when necessary. Or just get the one that makes sense depending on the style of music you typically play.
>>
wtf does a compressor do
>>
>>71411839
This isn't exactly fair. Most modern LPs have weight relief that keeps them from being ridiculously heavy. IMO they're much easier to play with the smaller frets and they come in a variety of neck sizes so just pick whatever one you like.

I guess you have a point about the gloss necks and top fret access, but that has never bothered me.
>>
>>71412361
It should lower the volume of your chords so that your notes sound louder in comparison but if you got a shitty one like me all it does is give you "compression tone" that old vintage compressors sounded like.
>>
chambered lps are a joke
>>
>>71412361
Compresses the sound. I was jamming at my friend's parents once, they had a fuck ton of gear. His dad let me try a bunch of old pedals and when he hooked up the compressor he kept switching it on and off and was like "Hear that tone change!? Hear how much better it is!?" I was like "YEAH!" But really I couldn't tell anything changed.
>>
>>71412361
Makes your 16th note (and 32nd note) funk strumming sound better.

https://youtu.be/mMPfYYE5CBE
>>
>>71412427
They're lighter, more comfortable and have better sustain. The joke is the guy who thinks his 15 pound chunk of wood is superior because it's heavy and that magically equals better tone.
>>
>>71412449
>that ridiculously fast strumming

>>
>>71413600

>>
>>71413568
Because Gibson want to deliver a quality product and they know that some idiots will still shell out extra money to buy a pure solid body guitar with no weight relief even though it should be worth less.
>>
>>71413630
Been thinking about getting a new DSL100h. They're pretty cheap and I can get one with a 1960A cabinet for about $1,500. Or I could get a used JCM900 for about the same price. Not sure what to go for.

>>
>>71413853
Because being a guitarist and playing in a Rock band isn't about being a musician, it's about status and trying to look cool and meet girls... or at least it used to be until recently. It still i I guess but the people getting into music today are delusional and don't realize girls don't go for that any more.

So this mentality leads to myths like "my guitar is heavier, therefore it sounds better" and idiots obsessing over shit like string gauge and "muh superior tone" instead of just learning their fucking instrument.
>>
>>71413905
Well, I'm making the assumption (which is probably correct) that those who can actually afford to buy the likes of a Gibson USA Les Paul Standard is a proper guitarist
>>
>>71413853
Urban legends and extreem meems are hard to shake, especially when the guitar mags you buy at age 14 won't clear the issue up. So you have people buying into the tonewood meem and the expensive meem for their entire lives. Many such cases!
>>
>>71413786
Look at the old DSL50 and DSL100 heads. There's a few differences (most noticeably build quality) between them and the new ones. Huge difference. The good JCM900 is the SL-X, the rest are eh..

You'd also be wanting a 1960AV cabinet with either of those heads, not a 1960A.

Would this diagram work? I used SD wire color scheme. Yellow is the bare ground wire.

1. Bridge (series)
2. Bridge (parallel) / Bridge (split to north coil)
3. Bridge (split to north coil) + Neck (split to north coil) out of phase (I am planning to flip the magnet on the neck to keep it in phase)
4. Neck (parallel) / Neck (split to north coil)
5. Neck (series)

I based it on this diagram, http://guitarelectronics.com/2-humbuckers-5-way-lever-switch-1-volume-1-tone-04/
But I edited it to split both pickups in position 3 and a toggle switch for coil splitting in position 2 and 4.

but jumbo frets do almost the same thing, you can't really grip down hard on them or it goes sharp. they probably won't go as sharp as scalloped frets because the fretboard is closer, but it seems close enough to me and you don't have to mess around with the fretboard wood

It is a gate. It will activate at a certain decibel level. And from that level and up it will use a ratio (e.g. 2:1, 3:1 as high as 10:1) to cut the sound down. What this does is removes some of the dynamics in the sound (like some high end) but makes the volume level coming through the speaker much more even. It is most noticible on songs where you go from real quiet to real loud and back. A compressor would compress the sound (volume) during the loud part and bring up the sound during the low parts.

I think it matters a bit more than that, although it depends on context. You're right, a 2010 Tele is pretty much the same as a 2014. But for other makes, the year matters a lot. A 1994 G&L Legacy USA is a 3-bolt neck, whereas a later model 1999 is 4-bolt. The models after George Fullerton's death are basically just Fenders, used under license. Prior models have a slightly different profile than the later Fender ones.

Another example, a '73 LP custom is most likely a pancake with multi-piece maple tops and layers of mahogany for the body. In '76 or '77 they did away with that. They did add "volutes" for some years (thickened bits of neck at the headstock to prevent breakage) that guitarists complained about. And in the 80's the pickup design changed a lot, to put it mildly. Short answer is that a 78 Accord isn't the same car as a 2016 Accord. The industry advanced, and the maker advanced (or at least changed) as well.

My stratocaster has been choking at the high frets, as in it doesn't ring out properly past the 12th fret on any strings. I've heard it could be a truss rod issue but what other things could be causing it? My string gauge is 9-46
>>
Post nice/pretty guitars
>>
>>71419894
I posted some advice on this in the previous /gg thread.

1. Start with lowering the bridge as much as you can, until the buzzing becomes too much.

2. Take the strings off, release all the tension from the truss rod.

3. Massage the neck to relieve residual stresses in the wood. Twisting motion as well as bending motion. All up and down the neck.

4. Restring, then add about 1 1/2 to 2 turns on the tension rod. Retune. Note the buzzing. Before the 12th fret means it needs more tension in the rod; buzzing then none then buzzing again as you go from nut to bridge means too much tension. Adjust the truss rod accordingly and retune. Repeatedly until it's in tune and without buzzing and playable action. Lower bridge if action is to high.

5. After you get the neck balanced it still may buzz across all stings and all frets. Readjust the bridge height and retention the strings.

Just a question to you guys with a big collection. How often to you go through and restring the guitars you aren't regularly playing?
>>
>>71410140
Yes, he does have a point. All resistors (potentiometers are variable resistors) add noise to the signal. Adding noise late in the signal chain (say, by not shielding the speaker cable) doesn't have a big impact because the signal has been amplified already, making the added noise imperceptible in comparison. Adding noise early on before any amplification happens leads to the noise being amplified along with the signal, which might make it loud enough to be audible.

Noise aside, with passive pickups there is also the fact that the pots have a finite nonzero resistance, meaning they always introduce a load on the pickups which along with the capacitor(s) on the tone knob(s) and the inductance of the coils has an effect on the frequency response of the signal. In practice, you lose high frequencies even when your tone and volume are "cranked", i.e. when they shouldn't have an effect. Since this happens early in the signal chain, and not all of your effects are linear systems (meaning that it matters in what order you put them), this produces an audible difference compared to having no knobs.

>you lose high frequencies even when your tone and volume are "cranked",
Which is why there is a practice of putting .001uf caps on the volume knobs to bleed treble and counter the treble loss. Not to be confused with the cap on your tone knob whose purpose is filtering out higher frequencies depending on how you adjust your tone knob.
>>
>>71420639
Which in essence turns the whole circuit into a second order band pass filter. In any case, you're not getting rid of the "changes" in the frequency response.

>>
>>71420652
Your going around the changes by bleeding the treble past the volume knob. The cap is soldier from the input into the volume knob directly to the output.

it works fine as long as your pickups aren't too high

speaking of which, a ton of people have tuning problems because their pickups are too fucking high. the idea of a "Factory standard" pickup height is retarded. you should have them as low as they can get while giving you full tone desu

Like this, right?
I'm heading to work in a sec, if I have the time I'll calculate the frequency responses for this with and without the cap at the volume pot, I'm curious myself how big the difference will be. It might be that the difference is negligible but I can tell you right now that the it will NOT be a flat frequency response.

Also, do switches add noise like the resistors do?
>>
>>71420804
Yes, that is what I drew, except I added the tone knob and its capacitor to the circuit.
>>
>>71420816
Switches are technically potentiometers with a very large value (couple hundred kOhms to a few Megohms) and a limited number of positions, so yes. How much noise is added is not dependent on the resistance, funnily enough. It only depends on the temperature of the component and the bandwidth of the signal you're looking at (in audio it's usually 20 kHz).

So using a push/pull switch to let me switch between series/parrellel and between inphase/outofphase will add extra noise?

Will, having each of my pick ups have it's own vol/tone knob add more noise than having them both use the same one or would it be able the same?

>So using a push/pull switch to let me switch between series/parrellel and between inphase/outofphase will add extra noise?
Theoretically, yes. Whether the noise you add is perceptible is another question.
>Will, having each of my pick ups have it's own vol/tone knob add more noise than having them both use the same one or would it be able the same?
More components = more noise. However, the reactive loads in the circuit (caps, transitive capacitances) will have a larger impact on the signal than the noise does. I'd have to check which combination has a more pronounced filtering effect but my gut says a Les Paul style circuit (tone and vol for each pickup) will be "worse" (less flat) than one with combined tone and vol.

Keep in mind I'm only saying there is _technically_ a difference, and it _might_ be audible. That does not mean that a guitar with push/pull pots etc etc will sound bad, just that it'll be different.

Just recently acquired a Vox valvetronix and I'm happy with it
Has really great clean/ crunch and an acceptable high gain
Plus it's small, has a headphone jack for practice and is only like 250 good boy points at the local guitar center

If the tones and vol circuits for each pickup don't touch each other and instead go directly to the jack wouldn't that be similar to just have them each go through the same? As in they are separate circuits until the output jack.
>>
Right, I fucked around on an epiphone es-175 at guitar center for awhile, and I think I want a hollow body, since I do play jazz. I just don't want to spend a lot of monies. Is there anything that isn't shit for under $800?

Ibanez artcore series.
epiphone Joe pass emperor II pro, and epiphone broadway

all are perfectly fine and under $800

If they touch at the output jack, they aren't separate.
>>
>>71421276
What I mean is that each pickup will be passing through only it's own tone and vol so it would still only be passing through the same number of components as if they were both wired to the same vol and tone.

Yes, but only if only one of the pickups was active at any given time, you had perfect switches with infinite resistance, and you fully bypassed the inactive pickup AND its pots / switches.

I'm missing the solo but I can entirely play one of the two guitars in Necrophagist's Culinary Hyperversity
I can't really play any solos because my strings need way too much relief anyway.
