>>
Of course the pop song is gonna be her comeback single. She will have other more brooding songs like her previous projects, I guarantee it. But you've gotta dominate Spotify before you dominate the summer. Plus it's not even that bad
>>
>>71353331
I think he meant that she looks like a literal witch now
>>
>>71353358
No it isn't her look, I couldn't care less about that.
It was the terrible song. So disappointed. If this is the direction she's going, she should have just stayed gone.
>>
>>71353287
this feels like something she wrote for the radio, it's disappointing
>>
>>71353287
It was better than the other stuff I've heard from her. That last minute was p good. Lorde was never great though, whyd you wait 3 years for something you knew would be acceptable radio music?
>>
I mean this is still a good song.
I'm actually surprised with how good it is. Composition of it is rock solid.
>>
>>71353415
>>71353424
It's not a bad song. It's probably one of the more enjoyable Lorde songs I've heard (not really a fan, which explains why).

As a whole though, I can understand why fans of her wouldn't like it, since it stripped her of what made her unique and just turned her into generic 80's pop song throwback artist.
>>
>>71353287
>>71353415
>>71353424
Maybe you shouldn't expect radio pop artists to be your source of art, kids.

It's a great pop song, way more creative and "experimental" than Katy Perry or Taylor Swift or Carly Rae Jepsen.
>>
its pretty wank desu

She sounds like she has a mouth full of marbles...Over a Taylor Swift beat.
Yuk! I really hope this isn't the best she has to offer now, and it's just a one off blip.
I really like her in general.
>>
I'm not a huge fan of the song either, but the way I see it is there will be better songs on the album. Remember that Royals was the lead single off of Pure Heroine. The label needs a single. But regardless definitely like the song more than I like royals and I don't feel entirely dissapointed
>>
>>71353706
This, Royals was probably the worst song on PH

It was my first major heartbreak. The song is really about those moments kind of immediately after your life changes and about all the silly little things that you gravitate towards. I say, “She thinks you love the beach, you’re such a liar”. What the fuck, she thinks you like the beach?! You don’t like the beach! It’s those little stupid things. >>
>>71353287
What is this fucking tone/twang/thing that so many chicks these days are trying to get into their voice? It's a kind of artifice. I can't quite put my finger on it. It's maybe a kind of throwback to a 1920s vibe or something. I'm noticing it from quite a few female singers these days. Anyone else noticing it? She's doing it here big time and it's irritating as fuck.
>>
>>71353287
Yeah not a fan. I wasn't expecting Pure Herione 2.0, but this is just straight up generic pop. Not one interesting sound in there.

Maybe the full album will offer more unique looks, idk.
>>
>>71356696
Marbles...I'm pretty sure she was gargling marbles.
>>
>>71356790

Fucking agreed - I love me some good pop, including 1989 that that cheesy-ass Jack Antonoff also worked on....but holy shit is this song missing something huge!
The verses are eh, and the pre-chorus definitely gets me excited for a happy, joyous chorus...but then it hits and doesn't satisfy at *all* :(
The most annoying to me is that "I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it!" Ugh.

While it's grown on me while listening throughout the day, it still just sounds like Natasha Bedingfield trying to figure out the formula to "The Sound" by The 1975...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSnAllHtG70

>>71356696
The worst is when those first few lines are supposed to be 'so badass' but then they don't rhyme at all....*so* cheesy

-"I know about what you did, and I want to scream the truth. She thinks you love the beach you're such a damn liar."

Yeah, thanks. Interesting article. That stupid shit mentioned in the article is exactly what I'm talking about. There was a period through the 90s when R&B chicks did this kind of thing with their I's, kind of over-enunciating them, SWV and Monica and the like. I kind of liked that. But this new whispery, mouthful of potatoes thing is fake and pretentious.

You guys... This is as bland as it gets. Fucking Jack Anto-whateverthefuck on keys – fuck that guy tol.
>>
>>71358588
Hahahahahaha, that actually sounds really plausible.

The song is Eh/Bad for Lorde standards, but I can't really think of a song made for the charts that tops Green Light. Her mysterious vocals carry the song. The lyrics sound very much like 1989 lyrics by Taylor, that's not a good thing. I fucking hate that wannabe indie youth suburbs aesthetic that's going around.

I really wish she didn't work with Jack Antonoff. Bleachers and ESPECIALLY fun. are horrible bands. She should've stuck to only working with Joel Little. He isn't even producer on the track, only writer. That would've worked way better, and I'm sure they could've come up with an upbeat song together. Antonoff is all about these watered down but still epic choruses tailored in a way to please every single person on the earth. It's boring.

Fat chance that you won't like her Sophomore release at all if you did not enjoy Green Light. The rest of the album is produced by that asswipe Antonoff as well. Reminder that he is married to Lena Dunham, the child molester.

That’s her tonight and tomorrow she starts to rebuild. And that’s the song for me."

wow I'm so insprired, Lorde. thanks for pointing out the obvious meaning of the song; I might as well have read a fucking Reuters article instead you airheaded cunt

The Sound is one of it not my least favorite on their album, but I think they're a fantastic band. Definitely my favorite album of the year, in a year chock full of great albums.

They're masters of having their specific 'sound' but then just varying it enough for each song on the album – also the improvement on their 2nd album from their great 1st is staggering

Is anyone shocked about this?

It's 2017, we're entering a rapidly changing pop-scape thanks to Grimes.

Pretty cringeworthy to hear her try and talk so deeply about such a simple, cliche song. Her ego clearly outweights her talent.

Reminder The Smiths were a pop band that also dominated the charts and played on the radio and they wrote I Know It's Over. It's unnecessary and insulting to associate "pop" with this dreck.

Lorde's lyrics are always super cringe
Terrible teenage poetry that everyone writes but no one shows, but millions of people hear hers while everyone else's just gets forgotten in a hidden subfolder on an old family computer

>>71373498
Pure Heroine was great, what are you on about senpai
>>
>>71373794
>"She thinks you like the beach you damn liar"
A completely shit and empty attempt at sounding deep. This entire song is made up of it.
>>
>>71373824
This is what always annoys me about Lorde,
You know she thinks her own lyrics are so deep and insightful, she's like 'yeah im gonna wow them with this one'
>"it drives you crazy, getting old"
OK thanks, a 16 year old is singing to me about getting old like we're all gonna think 'yeah, she's right ... it DOES'
>>
>>71373856
Hahaha pretty much. Most of the time her songs are catchy enough that I don't give a shit, but in this new one they were noticeably terrible and it was glaringly obvious because the song also sucked

If /mu/ is so conscious about good lyrics why does everyone shit on Will Toledo and calls him talentless when he wrote lyrics at the same age as her, Justin Bieber and all those other ones?

>Behind every great loves story lies a great suicide
>You can't give yourself completely and keep the man inside
>Every sentence that I climbed halfway
>Saw the heights of what I wanted to say
>And crawled from word to word, trying to get back down

>The unending realization that it's never gonna end
>I spend half the day exhaling, and the other half holding my breath

Weird I see so much hate for a guy who wrote this and so much love for Lorde in this thread.
>>
>>71373932
listen, /mu/ isn't one person, it's a collective of people. Some people put more emphasis on lyrics, others put it more on the music. The people that care about the lyrics probably like Will Toledo, but the ones that don't put the emphasis on the lyrics, then they probably don't really care (or do, but not because of the lyrics).
>>
>>71373962
That much is obvious, but you get enough collective and repeated opinions for long periods of time that you can pretty much say "/mu/" likes or hates something. That's where these phrases come from. Most, almost all, Toledo threads are just bashing and negative memes, even though he wrote most of the songs he has today at 20 and under, which I think is super impressive, yet I see these huge, excited threads for... Lorde, for example. It's pretty weird.

It's almost as if they're so desperate they'd hop on any pile of shit with a semi-cute female singer on it, but that can't be the answer.

Dude! Listen to the album! This is LEAGUES above her other releases!
>>
>>71353287

Why would you anticipate more music from her? She's godawful.
>>
>>71374391
Cool!

>I'm not the Anon
Fwiw I wasn't the anon THAT anon was responding to either, but imo it really is pretty striking how much more fresh-sounding (for lack of a better term) that 2+ years old now Grimes lead single release looks/sounds in comparison to what Lorde released just yesterday.
>>
>>71374421

That's not fair to be honest. She fit the time really well with her sound. I hope this first single is just a one off.
I hope she hasn't fallen to far behind the times. Let's see, there's more than one song on an album.
>>
>>71374418
Wtf no it's not.
Halfaxa > Visions > Art Angels > Geidi Primes
>>
>>71374497
You have a really good point Anon. Thanks again.
>>
>>71374503
Halfaxa was stellar, but they were all much simpler. She's said herself that it was just her and her laptop, with no help. Which is cool and good, but her music is better now that she's earned some help in making her aural visions
>>
>>71374569
Well Art Angels completely changed her style. Personally, I think the nu-pop style is no where near as good or interesting as her original experimental stuff.
>>
>>71374418

The album is Halfaxa Anon?
>>
>>71374588
Hmm. I think that the fact that I know she can make that experimental stuff is what made the pop so great. You know she's actually thinking about it.

>>71374636
No, that song is from Art Angels

Thanks Anon. btw you actually seem to know your shit about Grimes. I've asked about her before and well to be perfectly honest I wasn't to impressed with what was shared. I was probably being trolled of course, we all know where we are.
If you could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate. What you posted tonight surprised the fuck out of me. Thanks again.
>>
>>71374717
Ah, that wasn't me that shared that track, but I love it to!
While I think it's worth hearing her other albums in order first {Geidi Primes, Halfaxa, Visions, Art Angels} to hear how she developed, she's also said herself that she personally never planned on publicly releasing them {her first two}. They were just her little laptop creations.

If you've had trouble getting into any of those songs before, just unashamedly jump into AA. Enjoy it, it's fantastic and a good time!
>>
>>71374717
Fyi fwiw there are more than just the two of us in this chain of discussion right now.

Yeah. The thing about Grimes is that she isn't JUST a meme on /mu. In actuality she's actually really good.
>>
>>71374853
>The thing about Grimes is that she isn't JUST a meme on /mu. In actuality she's actually really good.
the thing is she's not tho
>>
>>71374499

>She fit the time really well with her sound

And that alone indicates quality? Idiot
>>
Fwiw something else to consider:

>2014:
Grimes releases a non-album single (Go) featuring an uncharacteristic bts collaboration with best bud/fellow producer BloodPop.
>2016 (two years later):
Lady Gaga releases her new album featuring BloodPop on his first high-profile stint as an album-wide producer for a potentially HUGE DEAL release of someone else's work.

>2015:
Grimes releases a non-album single (Entropy) featuring an uncharacteristic bts collaboration with friend/fellow producer Jack Antonoff.
>2017 (two years later):
Lorde releases her new album featuring BloodPop on his first high-profile stint as an album-wide producer for a potentially HUGE DEAL release of someone else's work.

Technically speaking patterns only emerge after a minimum of three samples. However imo whoever manages to team up with Grimes seems to stand a pretty good chance of going somewhere BIG because of it.

>>71374901
>>71374975

Imo the only thing keeping Darkbloom from being her most perfectly balanced release to date is how short it is.

And fyi your pic is the ORIGINAL Halfaxa cover (see pic related for the full version showing the Cross at its center.) I'm just more partial to the Lo Recordings 2011 European re-release cover (one in the chart) because of the ironic eye-roll hidden in it.
