Someone else start making these threads or the OPs are gonna get retarded super fast.

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Some updates:
>Essra Mohawk - Primadorial Lovers
Not the first time ever I've listened to this record, but I listened to it laying down last night and that worked pretty well. Instrumentally pretty mellow, atmospheric and maybe even tame, with howling, at times pretty strange vocals. High 3.5 to a 4

>Dicks - Kill From The Heart
I've not really been into punk since I was very young but the whole 'gay communist texan hardcore punk' line snagged me. Definitely above average, I feel bad giving it a low rating because it probably just isn't my thing but it didn't really hit me. Low 3/5

Listened to Abbey is Blue a few times but can't make up my mind yet.

>Cluster

As much as I hate to start off with the obligatory historical point, I think it requires a little context. Imagine living in post-war Germany where the popular music you're most exposed to is from The Beatles or German knock-off imitations of The Beatles. Imagine then hearing this newly developed aggressive, transcendent form of music that would loosly be termed Krautrock. Moreover, imagine hearing this self-titled debut--it would be hard not to think this is, in fact, aggressively anti-music.

Although it bears, you know, zero semblance cosmetically to punk rock that would develop later in the decade, the sentiments here strike me as the same--an in-your-face deconstruction of formal constraint. Whereas punk came out of working class strife, Krautrock was tied by a mutual feeling of boxed-in helplessness that was post-WWII Germany, hence fascinations with interstellar travel, mysticism, cruisin' down the Autobahn, etc. The music was unabashedly escapist from the here-and-now.
>>

IMG_1855.jpg
24KB, 236x236px
>>71301868
With all that in mind, it's not easy to talk formally about the music itself. As with punk rock, there's no need to pick out minute details in the sloppy performance or rough production--it's beside the point but not the point iteslf. This is the point at which the punk rock analogy falls apart, because Cluster is anything but sloppy. Cluster '71 is unmistakably the sound of some machine, in fact (a spaceship?). One should note that no names are attributed here. It's ostensibly a self-titled album, the tracks are titled only their length, seemingly only out of the need for reference. The message is clear: this is unrecognizable music, and any reference point should be vague. A self-contained entity with its own conventions. Its own gravity and laws of physics, if we're buying into the interstellar motif. All that should come with an asterisk, of course, because we do recognize vague facets of the composition--the gradual menacing crescendo of the opening track, the creaks and whizzes that sound off every once in a while to remind us of its alien structure. Formless but calculated is perhaps a description that can do it the most justice. Also, that this album was released on a major record label remains one of the greatest mysteries in music history.

Stockhausen was making out-there electonic music earlier than this in the classical realm, but the fact is that for those young people packed packed into late-night discotheques in Berlin in the early-'70s, Cluster sounded like a grand statement light years away from anything they knew.

So I just got the time to review this one. It's a fishmans bootleg. Its not on rym sadly, hopefully someone will add that to the page

>Fishmans 12.12.97 Liquid Room: 9/10
I admit the quality of the sound in the record wasn't that good, otherwise it might very well be a 9.3-9.5 easily

I'll just keep it simple: If you wanted more Fishmans j-rock and more of the exceptional and cathartic violin bits from Uchu/Long Season then THIS is the one. This album sounds a lot like a crossover between kuuchuu camp/uchu but with the instumentation and atmpsphere of long season. Every track i felt is played to their limits. So here it goes:

At some parts the sound gets really aggressive, almost like a heavy rock or metal band (which is almost unexpected from Fishmans, but it works), urban and abstract/futuristic sounding, a lot like their other live offering Akasaka Blitz as well, with some relatively heavy use of electronics and synths and some real energesizing rockin here and there. The guitar play in here is cutting edge in the background and the instrumentation is thick, probably the most lush and meaty fishmans production i've listened to!

The performances were also on point. Every track in here is wtf this is so good tier. Just fantastic exhibition as always. Best live renditions of some of their tracks and some of theo are just comfy and fun and Fishmans at the peak of their game. And wow, Doyobi no Yoru. And wow, Sunny Blue. And that 15 minutes long Walking in the Rhythm. Holly golly 10/10. Fishmans completely nailed the dub parts as well.

Is it possibly better than their final live album? I don't know, but it's damn good

>justok: Les Discrets - Septembre et penises w/e

this is some dull ass black metal with dark/neofolk passages, but really it's the other way around. the vocals are clean, sound bored, and in a language i don't understand. nothing interesting or exciting happens the entire time, despite their best (read: half-assed) efforts. nothx
also, this has nothing to do with shoegaze, still scratching my head at that tagging

While some respected and famous artists worldwide and from Japan (such as Kung Fu Generation, Artic Monkeys and Animal Collective) have done performances in the Liquid Room, it's a small venue where only about 1000 people or so can fit in, so you can imagine how hard was it to get a bootleg from an unofficial event where not that many people went in the first place! But all of them in this fun day were happy of course. It didn't take a pact with otherwordly aliens to find this so that's all i have to say.

I'm also a casual on here so don't worry. I'll try to be in touch with you all for more great fishmans releases
>>
>>71307377
Alright, that's fine.

There exists a Space Shower recording of the Liquid Room that was broadcasted in Japan recently so I'll just assume that's where it's from. Regardless, if you obtain any more Fishmans bootlegs/live recordings, I would love for you to post them. Thank you very much freind <3.

finally gave one of their albums a full listen
written and produced by the woman who also did the madoka ost
it's a three girl group not to have one "type" but because their neoclassical vocal polyphony demands it. yes there's that brand of grandeur to it but if you're calling this "cheesy" you're an idiot. melodies are complex and etherial, arrangements are rich yet spacious (a handful tracks made me think of Talk Talk fr), both subtly drawing influence from numerous streams of music. there's a few lesser cuts but this is "perfect pop" in the way that Pet Sounds or Hounds of Love are, only it doesn't get as much attention from non-weeb westerners. it should tho, it's as ambitious and masterful as pop music can get

objectively - 9/10

it's pretty boring tho

personally - 5-6/10

>Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz
Some nice sounding stuff and Sufjan's voice is good as usual but I can't get into it too much, he's a good songwriter but a lot of his music feels gimmicky and bloated, this time with electronica instead of chamber pop orchestration. I wish I could get more into Sufjan as I really enjoy some parts. 3-/5

>Almendra - Almendra
Enjoyed the very chill atmosphere but there's not much that stuck with me. 2.5/5

>Kraftwerk - Autobahn
Title track is awesome, the lyrics are kinda goofy but fun and there's the odd clunky transition or two but it flows well, exploring a lot of repetition while still progressing. The more ambient tracks are enjoyable but forgettable, Autobahn and Kometenmelodie 2 are great. 3.5+/5

Okay, I'm gonna finish the Feb chart soon, I promise.

For now, been working through the rest of my log.

[1/2]

Van Morrison - Veedon Fleece
>Contemporary Folk

Doesn’t quite hit the same highs as Astral Weeks or Moondance but then again that’s pretty tough to do. This basically has all the elements that make Morrison’s music work. There’s jazzy instrumentals, with a nice jam-based sound and Van Morrison croons away in a series of ballads. It has a cozy, springtime atmosphere and serves as a really enjoyable project as a whole. Doesn’t seem to be a big standout, as all the tracks are pretty solid in one way or another. Plus that cover is as dope as it gets.

3.5/5

Woody Guthrie - Dust Bowl Ballads
>Country, Folk

While this doesn’t have an incredible amount of musical variety, it really struck a chord with me. If you weren’t aware, all these songs focus in one way or another on the Dust Bowl of the 30s and its impact on the great plains of the US. They’re all stark and pretty eye-opening looks at the Great Depression. Guthrie talks about losing his job, suffering from “dust pneumonia” and even struggling to enter California as a Western refugee. He talks about a father dying on a farm he refuses to leave after it’s decimated. He spites the Dust Bowl, protesting that “Dust Cain’t Kill Me”. It’s all a bit dour and one note despite having some touches of humor and brief moments of catchy, borderline jangly guitar. But as a concept album (technically two compiled), it works incredibly well thanks to Guthrie’s storytelling and passionate singing.

Certainly historically significant, which I knew going into this. But it’s surprisingly entertaining and touching in a weird way.

serious suggestion: albums with "march" in the title or have a song with the word "march" in it

>Albums with a song that has the word March in it
Ciccone Youth - The Whitey Album
Gary Burton - A Genuine Tong Funeral
The Residents - Fingerprince
The Residents - The Mole Show Live at the Roxy
Scott Tuma - Hard Again
Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning
The Beatles - Yellow Submarine
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

Purple Image - s/t
>Psychedelic Funk/Rock

An enjoyable little collection of funk and soul tracks from a random Cleveland band. This sits at the crossroads of a lot of classic acts and I could pick up on the little influences. The singing sounds like Sly & the Family Stone and the guitar work feels very Hendrix/Jefferson Airplane influenced, with that sharp psychedelic guitar tone they both tend to use. There’s also some weird, out-there passages that made it seem like these guys were trying to be Parliment/Funkadelic. It’s nice to hear this mix of sounds but as a result there isn’t a real original feel. The songwriting is okay and aside from the monstrous “Marching to a Different Drummer”, this feels pretty standard. It’s still enjoyable though.

3/5

Alice Coltrane - Ptah, El Daoud
>Spiritual Jazz

Sounds a lot like John’s classic quartet, with Sanders and Joe Henderson filling in on the sax and Alice providing some great compositions. Anyway, this has a very similar spiritual feel, with the pounding piano, impressive drumming and mean sax work. Sanders calms down a bit to fit the tone of this album a little better and Alice plays piano on most of the tracks instead of her typical harp, which helps as well. There’s the occasional harp accompaniment but the best tracks are the ones with Alice on piano. She just rips it up “Turiya & Ramakrishna”, which is super bluesy and powerful and also happens to be the best track. Also, Henderson plays flute on some of these tracks and he’s really good!

Probably my favorite from Alice so far.

yeah i can see why people like it but I'm a weirdo, especially when it comes to singer/songwriter stuff, 'extra' instrumentation normally detracts for me. Maybe I need to start looking at Sufjan as more of a pop artist than songwriter idk

And Woody Guthrie's actually a good example of what I look for, really simple shit but it's a lot easier to buy into the emotion of the songs when it's a man and his instrument, it's why Carrie and Lowell is my favourite from Sufjan. Glad you liked Woody btw

shamepai recs:

Autechre - Gantz Graf (2002)
>IDM, experimental

My first experience with Autechre is kind of a spotty one. The title track is great, it's shockingly aggressive and it's very similar to Aphex Twin in how fucking noisy and off the wall it is. Sadly, the other two tracks aren't that great. "Dial." is kinda irritating, it's synth tone doesn't sit well with me and it's rising and falling structure gets overplayed around halfway through its runtime. "Cap.IV" is just kinda disposable with some spastic drum programming layed over obscured melodies. It's a decent track but one that's been done a million times before to better effect. Decent EP and a good introduction to Autechre, but the title track is really the only thing I can get into here.

>From Berkley, Ca., John Fahey - The Great santa Barbara Oil Slick
>fahey blows his nose

Fahey's pieces have always been the type that get more and more interesting the more you listen and nestle into them. ~ intricate tapestries ~ , ~ fractal guitar mazes ~ , ~ boring old fogey music ~ etc. etc.

Is good. I think what Fahey accomplishes with his music is tremendously rare: His works are perfect for casual and close listening. They are full of depth and wonder, yet still perfect in the background while roasting meat chunks over an open fire in the bumfuck nowhere wilderness.

7/10 for now. Potential to rise.

>Jens Lekman - Life Will See You Now
HO-LY SWEET SAM HILL this is some cliche, dredged from the depths of commonplace sentimentalist drivel music.

Nyar, you can't be serious reccing me this ABABCB every track, boring normal harmony, hard boiled balderdash. Fuck, it's not even balderdash! Every song. Every. Single. Song. Is in 4/4. Like heck, Jens! You call this music?!

But the kicker? You want the real meat of this shit? That one special thing that really just sinks this album so far beyond the outer limits of lackluster?

Steel drums. Fucking steel drums. Bibbity boop bop style, oh yeah we so carribian, mon! Aloha! Welcome to Hawaii! Man, rotisserie pig with pineapple is so exotic this vacation is amazing! Steel drums. Jens, my man, you should have just put cowbell on every track and been done with it.

This album right here? Otiose twaddle of the lowest order. Wretched, unctuous guano. If this was a movie, it would be a 90s romcom starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. Pure fatuous perturbation in musical form.

ZERO. LITERAL ZERO./10

jk, it was pretty nice. Maybe 5 or 6/10. Decent music, nothing special. It sometimes dips into jam city, other times it does not. But seriously.

Nyar loses!

GJ Fish you did it. Hooray!

Pick some albums for me to listen to in March. I'dunno like 7 or so. Make sure they're good or I'll go back and un-win you.

Darklands recs:

Various Artists - Sacred Guitar & Violin Music of the Modern Aztecs (1977)
>native american music

What should be a collection of beautiful music ends up sort of blending all together in an album that's very limited in scope and sound. The opener is definitely beautiful, and most of the tracks here are quite good and very contagiously energetic and happy, but it's just far too repetitive, for lack of a better word. The droning quality of the violin coupled with the upbeat guitar is normally something that would really capture me, but I'm left totally cold by this. This isn't the kind of criticism I should levy against an album like this, but more variation really would be nice, every track pretty much sounds the same, and while the basic sound of the album is quite nice, it gets very old.

yamir recs:

Dreamboat - Dreamboat (2016)
>ambient, post-rock

Two tracks split between two different sides of the ambient/post-rock spectrum. The first track is more structured and conventional, with vocals and some incredibly beautiful soundscaping and guitar work. Ilyas Ahmed's dreamy, whispery vocals fit perfectly with the layers upon layers of synths and guitars, and while it's arguable that the track is longer than it has any right to be, it's a great track and a great opener nonetheless. The second track, the longer track, is much more abstract and free. It takes much more from free improv and free folk than post-rock, and it's obvious that the group's skills lies more in the latter style than in the former styles. The soundscaping is still on point, with some more electronic flourishes added for good measure, and the sparse organ use is beautiful. However, the track only really kicks into gear around the ten minute mark, with the first ten minutes regulated to the group's attempts at free improv. It's not great, and it often devolves into something that's more style and substance, but I'm still a fan of the usage of electronics, and the track definitely reaches the heights of the opener around the ten minute mark. It's spotty, that's no lie, but it's still a well produced and well-done record.

3.0-

And by the hair of his teeth, trip up pulls out a win and a twenty album drone!

>Venetian Snares - Rossz csillag alatt született

The only Venetian Snares I've heard before was Traditional Synthesizer Music, which I didn't really like. This was a lot better. The combination of classical/ breakcore/ drill n bass was pretty cool. However, none of it was too jaw dropping, but more of a pretty cool listen throughout. Compositionally it's very impressive, but enjoyment wise it's nothing to rave about.

Apologies in advance, I don’t know how to write about reggae and I’m a bit brain dead.

[1/2]

Keith Hudson - Flesh of My Skin: Blood of My Blood

While this isn’t quite as dark as the Dadawah album I enjoy, this is still some of the more brooding reggae I’ve heard. The atmosphere has a similarly meditative feel, with a slow pace, darker instrumentation and lots of hand drumming. The album opens with “Hunting”, a two minute instrumental with almost ambient sampling of the forest, some bouncing drums and lots of high flying flutes. It starts to get more hypnotic after that. “Flesh of My Flesh” and “Blood of my Blood” are essentially the same track but with different lyrics, which could easily be annoying but it’s nice and mellow instead.

The album continues getting more and more spiritual, with song titles like “Testing My Faith”, “Treasures of the World” and “I Shall Be Released” taking up most of the album. They’re a little on the religious side and have some really slow paced instruments. Speaking of which, the instrumentals are fairly minimal, which was a huge plus. Most of the tracks just had congos, heavy bass and a little strumming guitar. It never overwhelming and gives Hudson plenty of space to operate. It’s definitely a big change of pace from the other reggae I’ve heard, which tends to lead toward the opposite. I’ve decided that I usually like this style of the genre more, which I wouldn’t have expected.

Anyway, consistently enjoyable. Gonna have to check out more from Hudson cause I’ve gotten lots of recs.

Yabby You - Conquering Lion

Okay, the Scientist album was awesome but I may have saved the best for last. Like the Hudson album before, this feels incredibly spiritual, with a lot of passion put into each song. However, the tracks kind of go the opposite way, with maximalist instrumentation and a slightly lighter feel. There’s a whole group (The Prophets) behind this project and hearing them chanting along together felt unifying and even more spiritual.

The album kicks off with “Run Come Rally” which I’d already heard several versions of and it’s just awesome. It has this passionate chanting that rides over a cool synth/organ and a really catchy bassline. “Jah Vengeance” is in a similar style, with slapping cymbals, tight organ work, etc. The title track is maybe the coolest on here though, with a weird little pitch shift at the end and even more dub influence than I’d expect. All the songs follow kind of a similar formula, with a few adding little trumpet lines and a sax. They all seem to be better than the next though, this is incredibly consistent. Surprisingly, the style doesn’t mesh together either, the stylistic consistency is actually this album’s biggest strength. The songs all feel distinct and memorable but as a whole, this album ends up as a mesmerizing experience. Awesome listen.

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Songs of Forgiveness
>Noise, Ambient, Hypnagogic Pop

Essentially a much lengthier version of what he was attempting on Songs of Remembrance: post-internet loops and soundscapes, painted with his somewhat characteristic washes and waves aesthetic. The key difference with this project is that the track lengths are fully fleshed out. Both parts I and II run to 20 minutes and 16 minutes, respectively—a big step up from the one to two minute blips of Songs of Remembrance. Creates some truly beautiful, crystalline, serene moments, and then runs them into the ground with plenty o’ meditative repetition.

And therein lies the problem: repetition. Jefre lets these short, 5-second melody loops ride for nearly the entire track length. It gets tiring. Even though a track like “Songs of Forgiveness II” will randomly cut into progressive electronic-type ambient and noise after like, 10 minutes, you were just listening to the same 3 second loop for 10 minutes. I suppose they’re some meditative beauty in it all, but count me out.

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - In Summer
>Noise, Ambient, Hypnagogic Pop, Shoegaze

Here JC-L is back in business, generating far more interesting and dynamic compositions than any of the hypnagogic loop stuff of the previous Songs of Remembrance and Songs of Forgiveness. The 24-minute EP kicks off with the gorgeous, noisy, “Love’s Refrain”, which has an amazing combination of subtle sounds and roaring noise—it’s pretty arresting.

“Little Dear Isle” is abruptly a much calmer piece, simply featuring bird calls, forest sounds, a crunchy whirring, and ambient drone-type washes. It’s an almost skeletal track compared to the usual fare, made obvious by the gentle but omnipresent wall of sound on the next track, “In Summer”. As always, the subtitles just blow me away. Not only is the overall composite sound just gorgeous, but you can hone in on an infinite number of nigh unnoticeable micro-melodies and oh so faint sounds. Like “Little Dear Isle” before it, “In Summer” gets dark and glitchy for the last minute or so.

“Blue Nudes (I-IV)” seemingly retreats back to the overstayed tape loops of the previous dud efforts, but instead is revealed to be something of a shoegaze track, with a lazy but prominent bass line and an MBV-like collection of guitars. The outro, “Prelude” then promptly drops the listener into the third level of noise music hell, uncomfortableness—harsh static and hog/dog grunting and panting samples before drifting into a Caretaker-esque demented piano sample. While I’m not a fan of the first bit, the piano outro really was nice, if a bit pointless-seeming after that random noisy section.

Overall, I think the weird breaks/extreme stylistic shifts at the end of a bunch of tracks are frankly annoying, but there were a bunch of really cool and beautiful moments here as well. I definitely wish it were much more focused.

Unnecessarily long review inbound.

TL;DR - great west coast hip-hop

[1/2]

Del the Funky Homosapien - I Wish My Brother George Was Here
>West Coast Hip-Hop

I learned two things about Del’s family throughout the course of this album. 1 - Del doesn’t have a brother named George, he’s talking about George Clinton. 2 - Turns out Del’s cousin is Ice Cube and he’s actually a really good producer. Seeing Ice Cube on the boards was originally a disappointment cause I was expecting more of that Bomb Squad style which kind of grinds my gears. After all, I’m not usually too into the west coast - the beats are typically chaotic and the lyrics are usually too political or aggressive.

But man, these beats are funky as shit. I guess I should expect as much from someone who calls himself “Funky” and is also part of the Hieroglyphics but I was still surprised. The Funkadelic influence is obvious on here, as most of the production rides off bouncy, energetic funk beats, with booming bass and weird little samples/pitch-shifted vocals and effects. Del doesn’t go quite as weird as Redman with the P-Funk influence though, as a lot of these have more of a jazz foundation (there’s even a sax solo at the end of “Mistabolonia”).
>>
>>71315987

[2/2]

For ‘91, Del is actually a great rapper. He still has that old school twinge to his flow, with a very deliberate, methodical approach to lyrics. Most old school rappers almost sound like they haven’t mastered breath control yet, with awkward pauses and such in between. Del still has some of that going on and when it does, you can kind of hear the similarities between him and Ice Cube. That being said, it’s way tighter than anyone I’ve heard from the era aside from maybe Rakim or Big Daddy Kane.

While it’d be easy for this album to just ride on the awesome funk production, Del brings it on a number of songs. Most of the tracks are pretty easy-going, as he raps about some pretty light-hearted topics. He complains about couchsurfers (“Sleepin’ on My Couch”), tells a story about missing the bus in LA (“The Wacky World of Rapid Transport”) and talks about life in LA (“Sunny Meadowz”). In fact, the most politically charged tracks are probably... “Dark Skin Girls” and “Hoodz Come in Dozens” - so he barely even goes that direction. For the west coast, it honestly pale in comparison to the seriousness of Ice Cube/NWA or PE. Pretty normal, everyday topics on here for the most part.

I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did honestly, this is a really awesome listen. I guess I kind of group Del and Kool Keith together b/c of Deltron 3030 and I’m not usually too heavy into abstract hip-hop. Check it out if you want a fun listen.

Have you listened to any of the UK DIY bands she's toured with recently? Not totally similar but worth checking out. I'd recommend Trust Fund - Seems Unfair. If you like that but want something more lo-fi with more quiet tracks, the album before it No One's Coming For Us is also great. They recently released another with more electronic elements also very good.

https://trustfund.bandcamp.com/track/big-asda
Mitski is currently touring with Personal Best who are decent but more one-note. Decent pop punk though.

>Jandek - St.Louis Friday

There are a lot of things to say about this.

First of all, there is variety. The set starts off with the Rep playing solo acoustic guitar and it is some of the classic acoustic Jandek. Unnerving, self-reflective and slightly upset.

Then the entire band joins Jandek and they play (for the first time!) an oldie from the Corwood studio catalogue! Fishing Blues reappears from Graven Image! I remembered this track easily, because it was a fairly memorable track. I remember mentioning in a review that I’m not much a fisher, so this isn’t the most relatable topic for me. Still, nice to see that the myth of him not playing his older stuff during the show was debunked!

Another cool thing occurs during Shadow Life. The song itself starts like a conscious live track with drum stick hits! W O W! Now that is conventional! A female vocalist takes over on this track, and I was not sure if I am a huge fan of this particular vocal performance against Rep’s twangs. Her voice sounds pretty crazy. Then Where Were You Born hit and her role was perfect for that. So yeah, good stuff on the vocal spectrum.

Rep doesn’t seem to be the ensemble leader on this. The tunes are set up by the bassist and the drummer. Sterling just wanders around the notes and probably lazily walks around. I should probably watch the live show. It sounds like an interesting experience. Then on About That, a piano appears that sounds exactly like the one on The Beginning! Weird! Plus the rep is singing about vices so there is an extra sense of suspense (not like he cares about it anyway). And don’t get me started how he ended the track with a classic blues bar.

Wait! There’s more! A shouting fest on Got My Dog! I really doubt it is the Rep shouting, cause the voice is way too rough. Then we get a duet performance on the track too, all to a swinging mania of an instrumental. Sterling (now this is definitely him) returns to recite the lyrics about his dog and his gun before it all ends. Wonderful, wonderful!

Further performance starts to mess around with different synth presets, metronomes or whatever the fuck is playing during Lucky Stars, so there is even more more variety. The show ends on a paranoid bass driven Weekends, in which Jandek is a mentally unhealthy guy sitting with a gun on his front porch. Great way to end the show huh…

The length is an issue here regardless. Almost 2 hours is a bit of a stretch. It is a very fun live show. I enjoyed it.

What do you think of Ágætis byrjun? I think Ros does a lot of the same tired things but I at least like that one (the fact that it stands over 98.12.28 in 1999 on RYM is criminal tho).

Hong Chulki - Amplified WC
[2010]

Soo this is an EP of Electro-Acoustic Improvised music but the actual "improvisor" is absent or, more correctly, isn't an actual human. The sounds here are obtained by recording the unexpected small buzzes and cracks of machines and amplifying them.
Sad thing is that stuff like this only sounds interesting when described, and when it comes down to actual listening it's vapid and unremarkable.

I wrote this today too

>Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Trilogy

To this day I am not that familiar with the ELP output and it is extremely limited to Trilogy and some vague recollection of Pictures at the Exhibition. The reason for this is that my father used to have this record in the car’s CD changer back when I went to primary school. I listened to Trilogy fairly often during the rides to school.

The album here brought me into the world of multi-piece compositions with the opening Endless Enigma pt.1 – Fugue – Endless Enigma pt.2 (well maybe there was the Abbey Road medley, but this is one is more on the “prog” side of things so to speak). The percussion and the whistles that open the piece scared me slightly as a kid. I still can sense a hint of mysticism in the tension of the opening section. The other thing about the piece I still find to be very thrilling is Lake’s transitions from careless to anxious vocal deliveries. The fugue itself is just a showcase of brilliance from the late Keith Emerson, who was probably the greatest rock keyboard performer of his age.

Further down there’s From The Beginning. It didn’t inspire me to pick up a guitar as a kid but it was pretty damn close to. The opening is absolutely brilliant in its simplicity and beauty. Same thing goes to the fingerpicking during the chorus and that pearl of a Fmaj7b5/E at the end of the bridge. This track is probably my favorite Greg Lake song ever.

The Sheriff will always be remembered by me for the Palmer’s “shit” bit at the beginning and ,of course, that closing piano rag marathon that occurs after the gunshot. It’s a very joyful and is a silly little track.

Hoedown is basically a 4 minute show off exercise from Keith Emerson where he manages to push in Copeland’s composition to a more aggressive rock-folk dance. This is one of the more popular ELP live tracks and I bet it was an absolute blast to see this in a live setting.

Trilogy is a very mellow note that I grew to appreciate much much later on, mostly for the sensitive lyrical delivery from Lake and the gorgeous piano composition. A letter to love long lost that still can’t just die. Performed in a very dramatic fashion. Definitely prefer the opening part, but I’ll be damned if the following explosive section isn’t just as good. Lengthy prog soloing where the sense of loss from the first bit is completely left and all we are left with is a Moog push from Emerson.

Living Sin is still remarkable for that cold and somewhat badass vocal delivery from Lake. The songwriting on this one is really strong for such a short track and it boasts some memorable lines (at least for me). “Turn your inside outside in / still you don’t know where she has been” especially has been one of my faves on the entire album.

The closing Abaddon’s Bolero is still my least favorite track. It’s like an 8 minute Bolero that does boast this march-like drumming and interesting synth ornaments around the main melody, but I just can’t enjoy it as much as the rest of the tracks on the album.

All these years later, the album still holds up. Great songwriting, excellent musicianship and memorable lyrical passages. I feel like I didn’t mention Palmer enough in the review, but the thing is he is just as fantastic as Lake and Emerson. Not the easiest thing to catch up with Emerson’s piano pirouettes and he does it magnificently. Great album, check it out. In the meantime, I should probably listen to some other ELP albums.
