The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Is RYM's auto rec system a bit shitty or is it just me? It's literally given me the entire discography of:

The Byrds
Eric B & Rakim
The Kinks
Kool G Rap
Neil Young (ok, almost)
Nick Cave
Tom Waits

Not that they aren't good artists but it seems like they don't give me any variety. Is that true for others or is it just indicative of my predictable musical taste?
>>
>>71276818
yeah it's pretty well-known that autorecs are shit.

I'm supposed to be checking out a lot of Yo La Tango, Eno, and Neil Young even though I've never given any of their albums very high ratings.

It's a lot of "hey! ya haven't heard this thing with over 3,000 ratings?? Well, ya should!!"

Listen to Waits tho
>>
>>71276932
Huh, I didn't realize they were that bad. I've been trying to sort through them for some new stuff but I end up deleting half the albums they give me.

Weirdly enough, I have the opposite problem with the "Latest 100" ratings. They always give me the most obscure shit with under 20 ratings.

I'll have to check out more Waits actually, I've dug both albums I've heard. Also gonna check out more Neil Young and Byrds albums too so the recs aren't all awful.

Quick n dirty review bump since this thread is so dead.

John Fahey - Blind Joe Death
>American Primitivism

Probably the most traditional and country I’ve heard Fahey. It’s still quite enjoyable and has awesome guitar playing, it just doesn’t do much that hasn’t already been done. You can tell that this is early Fahey because it doesn’t have that awesome genre blending sound. Instead it feels like a blues/country hybrid with an occasional flurry of guitar arpeggios. Solid, not great.

3/5

Pulp - Different Class
>Britpop

Okay britpop that starts shitty and kind of redeems itself by the last 4 or 5 tracks. Never been much of a fan of this genre and this certainly didn’t change my mind.

2.5/5

Sly & The Family Stone - Fresh
>Funk, Psychedelic Soul

More tight grooves from Sly and co. Has that nice laid-back but coke-infused sound that Sly mastered during his previous two albums without being overly psychedelic. Riot (though great) always felt like overkill and this is kind of a mesh of that and Stand! t b h. It’s what you’d expect, a couple really groovy, upbeat songs, some slower soul cuts and a really nice atmosphere all throughout.

3.5/5

Songs: Ohia - The Lioness
>Indie Folk, Slowcore

Phew, this is a hell of a listen. Lots of emotion, powerful lyrics and some fantastic slowcore drumming. Emotionally exhausting and draining but an incredible album. Right up my alley. This may actually get bumped in the future, we’ll see.

4/5

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Songs of Remembrance
>Ambient, Minimal Synth, Hypnagogic Pop, Noise

And so the Jefre Cantu-Ledesma discography exploration begins. Songs of Remembrance, released four years and a dozen albums after Love Is a Stream, is a considering more active, yet confused record. Most songs on here have definitive beats and a more easily recognizable song structure (they’re a lot more repetitive too), but little purpose unifies them. It’s literally just 21 short (1-3 minute each) sonic excursions, playing around with spacey, noisy, almost post-internet sounds.

Not that the tracks aren’t cool. A lot of them are very cool, and however lackadaisical the album direction is, each little experiment still has an impressive texture and attention to detail. It’s just a little aimless is all. Feels like a pile of “rejects” that he couldn’t make into more fleshed out songs—the volume is even wildly inconsistent between tracks. I don’t see myself returning to this often.

I've never got too into Brand, given it a few listens and it didn't stick in my mind particularly. The only records of his that I wouldn't bother with again are Rasta Communication and possibly Torch of Freedom, I'll give Brand another go sometime. And yeah, Nuh Skin Up would be jostling with Pick a Dub for the next place after those three, probably winning out for consistency. I love Peace and Love, I'll stick Grounation on that chart, listened to a tiny bit of Mikey Dread, Washington Phillips and African Scream Contest a few more times, I'll check out Esther Russell too. Chart's all filled up now.

>Jandek - Houston Saturday 2011

Thank you based Sterling!

The return of pure spoken word material is something I am always for. I fucking love the talky trilogy and the opening The Door And The Red Tree is badass! The usual surreal imagery of doors and magical trees (that are not really magical but special in a very boring way, as it is with most of Jandek’s life) are performed to the audience as a simple story. Incredibly intimate!

After that we get some of the last era acoustic Jandek, very reminiscent to what was on
Skirting the Edge for example. Smooth and not overly dramatic vocal performance from Sterling, touching upon topics of love and loss. The acoustic performance is stronger than the one in London, mostly because it has different tracks and it is 20 minutes shorter. I think “I Die” and everything further down were my favourite track on this album outside of the talky part. Maybe it is cause of his lyrical recovery from broken relationships, and I can feel that especially now.

It’s great stuff. Good length for a solo guitar Jandek live album + some spoken word story thrown in. Happy with this one.

8/10

Seems I'm one of the few to think Blind Joe Death is just as good as his later music.

And did you listen to the lyrics much with Pulp? The main appeal is Jarvis Cocker's songwriting. Not that the band's that good, they only have couple of great songs aside from the lyrics.

Grails - Chalice Hymnal

A strange amalgamation of an album, like if Roxy Music's Avalon were reinterpreted as a psychedelic rock album. Almost to the point of some vapor-influence. Thankfully they didn't go full 80's synth and rely on a drum machine throughout (disregarding "Tough Guy", a weakling)--it still retains the feeling of a band performing live and organically. Some of the better tracks like "New Prague" are unmistakably 21st century psych/stoner. Like a good psych rock album, the music floats at least a couple feet off the ground at all times. Even if you disregard the compositions, there are some deeply satisfying lush textures here to enjoy. Undeniably heavy but smooth which is a combination I may have never considered. Listening to this album feels like staring into a lava lamp. If that all sounds like your kind of thing, give a listen.

I like this. I haven't been moved by a new album in a minute.

Don't get me wrong, I liked Blind Joe Death. It just seemed to be a pretty standard release. Cool primitivism but it lacks those lengthy, almost psychedelic passages that usually draw me into Fahey's music.

Also, yeah I noticed that the songwriting was pretty solid. Probably the standout, like you said. Didn't think it was enough to make up for the other average aspects but I'll have to come back and see if it grows on me.

Nice video/song by the way

>Hound Dog Taylor & The Houserockers - Beware of the Dog
This record has probably fallen victim to my expectations but from all stuff I've read about this record I expected it to be a lot more raw. Taylor himself is pretty loose but the band doesn't really feel like they're on the same wavelength, feels a bit restrained. Also kinda wish he didn't cover Dust My Broom because Elmore James' guitar on that song is probably more raw than anything on this album. To stop being overly negative for a second, I did like this and I'll probably enjoy it more when I come back to it without shitty preconceptions. 3.5/5

>Ultramagnetic MCs - Critical Breakdown
Repetitive funky sample based hip hop from the 80s? Of course I like it. Rapping is good but nothing nuts, Kool Keith is cool but you're here for the beats. 4-/5

>>71283767
nice man, really liked the reverby guitar and when the drum came in about 10 mins in, sounded great, I'd maybe even like them a bit higher in the mix since they get drowned out a bit at times but maybe that's what you're going for? I can't really remember what the Swans version sounds like off the top of my head atm so not sure how it compares but sounds good!

>>71284584
yeah obviously it's not like that, I just tend to not search that music out because I haven't enjoyed it in the past. I liked a prog album recently (L'enfant assassin des mouches).

That's a good album. Circus-like. I'm just ranting to not you or anyone in particular, but I think it's healthy to approach genres that you don't naturally "get" with that exact humility in mind--that you have to put in some work to meet them on their level to appreciate them too

World music is not a thing, it was a marketing ploy invented in the 80's to categorize western artists that incorporated non-western elements.

you could make a non-western modern music comp chart, or a traditional folk chart

both would would be far too broad to be captured in one chart however

I'd just focus on making an essentials of one region or category.
Like maybe modern African music? highlife, zam rock, afro-funk, afrobeat, all that jazz.

>Bataille Solaire - Dolby's ON

Incredibly intricate IDM to an almost absurd degree, while not sounding too much like a clusterfuck. The club friendly tracks really showed off the producer’s competence for handling melody on top of pure sound design knowledge. Good stuff but not as immediately engaging as other OM releases. This one can’t be listened to once or twice to be understood fully so consider the rating to be a tentative one.

>Lil Data - Lil Tape

The range of styles and sounds that this guy throws around in this 16 minute release is nothing short of impressive, considering that fact that he doesn’t approach sensory overload levels of noise. Goes to show that you can do a lot with a little, which I always can appreciate. It’s no use trying to describe it, but it does fall under the PC music umbrella. If that interests you, you can check it out here: https://soundcloud.com/pcmus/lil-tape

Just clocked I didn't write anything up on the last few ratings so I'll post some lil thoughts

>Lanaya - La Tradition Mandigue
I was starting to feel like I was at the point of scraping the barrel of the Mande music page, having got through most of the big orchestras of the 70s or so and most standouts, struggling to find much more than tapes from back in the day too lo-fi even for me and post-80s records where any personality is swamped in overproduced capital-W 'World Music' vibes for western audiences, this record gave me hope that there are more gems to be found. It's on the same level as that album, but some of the energy/euphoric feeling captured in Yasimika shines through here. Most likely a future favourite in the genre and by fourth listen I'm comfortable putting it down as a 4/5.

>Max Roach - We Insist!
Thematically firey as fuck, I've only listened to a bit of Abbey Lincoln elsewhere but she brings some real intensity. Immediately 3.5 feels most natural but I can definitely see it a record that will grow.

>Art Pepper - Meets the Rhythm Section, Winter Moon
I'm still finding my feet a bit with jazz but there's an emotiveness to these records which I really appreciate, floating between 3.5 and 4 on both, preferred Winter Moon on my very first listen but feel like I slightly prefer Meets... now

>Hawe Drame - S/T
Some of the most indistinct Mande griot music I've heard. I love lo-fi music but I feel like any nuance here is lost in the muddiness of the recording. If you really fucking love Fanta Damba, give it a go, but it's an indistinct record, probably a 2-2.5.

>Pet City - EEEKS
Some nice melodies here and there but it feels a bit derivative of Foxygen, who in themselves are derivative of however many other artists. Probably better than the previous two Foxygen records though. 3/5

>Don Cherry - Eternal Rhythm
After a few listens, I still don't know what to make of it. I feel like there's a potential favourite in there waiting to click.
>>
>>71282569
>hard rock, pop punk, alternative rock, progressive rock, heavy metal, trap rap, pop rap, psych rock

>Bembeya Jazz National - Sous La Direction...
Probably the biggest Guinean band, I don't know why it's taken me so long to check out Bembeya Jazz. One of the better records from the 'Orchestre' style French West Africa bands, one I'll definitely come back to. 3.5/5

>Herbie Hancock - Empyrean Isles
Before this all I had listened to was Headhunters, mostly quite a few years back. Didn't make too deep an impression on me in general but I really enjoyed the egg. 3-3.5 but a probable grower.

and for the one I started last night

> Women - Women
Some really nice textured music with great noise sections. Looking forward to listening to Public Strain, feels like it needs a bit of tightening up structure-wise but sonically they've nailed it and are capable of making some really good pop underneath the noise-rock exterior, Black Rice and Shaking Hand being the most superficially 'pop' tracks on the records and are the standout tracks for me.

>Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Real entrancing music. Potential future favourite, just need to give it more time to let it grow/confirm my enjoyment runs deeper than novelty.

>Bazoumana Sissoko - Le Vieux Lion II
The gorgeous artwork made me really want to like this one, the euphoria (or potentially just his blindness) on this fella's face is real charming. On first listen it sounded like a pretty standard griot music tape of the time with detail lost in the muddiness. Apparently this guy was a big fish back in the day, composing the future national anthem of Mali, but really didn't stand out from any other random 4 rating tape taken from the Mande music RYM page.

>Otis Clay - Trying To Live My Life Without You

Was recommended to me based on James Carr which I can totally see, it's definitely reminiscent of some of his stuff. Definitely some solid soul with muscular vocals and arrangements. 3-3.5

>Factums - Alien Native
A really interesting first listen, I got really into it but I was fairly high when I listened to it last night which might have inflated my enjoyment somewhat. Most likely to settle on a high 3.5.

>Neba Solo - Kene Balafons
Say what you want about the music, this man has a lovely set of balafons. As the title suggests, this is balafon and vocal heavy Mande music and is pretty nice in places but nothing to phone home about.

Gonna listen to Dicks next I reckon, first punk record in a long time but looks pretty interesting.

Not a huge fan so far but damn "...A Psychopath" is a pretty chilling song
>>
>>71288759
Yeah my best friend is more into the crunchy guitar music than me and the S/T is in his top thirty or so records ever, he gave the impression Public Strain has less prominent pop elements and those were possibly what I liked the most in the S/T. Really looking forward to it, not on the chart but I reckon I'll listen to it a few times tomorrow. Greatest album of all time is a decent enough endorsement though.
>>
>>71288799
Cluster '71 is an average album.
>>
>>71288845
that's kinda strange. while it's noisier and more atmospheric, i'd also say public strain is more song-focused than s/t. and the closer is women's best pop song (probably)

Fleece - Voyager
>Neo-psychedelia
>2017

This sounds a lot like *something* I've heard before, I just can’t figure out what. It’s a meandering, jangle pop-esque neo-psych record, a.k.a.: psych rock with modern production and catchy, funky pop appeal. The bass is high in the mix, giving it a bit of a Tame Impala vibe. And I guess that’s another thing about this record and band: these guys seem very aware of sounds and sonic tropes. There’s a waffling guitar sound that erupts in the break of the first track that sounds a lot like a classic late-game saxophone, they have very groovy riffs that jerk about a bunch, they really play with lyrical expectation, outros get reversed, transitions can be both smooth and choppy, etc. They certainly try a lot of different things here within their relatively tame psychedelic pop rock framework. The last track is actually pretty good (the chorus reminds me of that of “The Operation” on Thinking Fellers’ Strangers From the Universe)—it’s probably the pinnacle of their pop appeal.

Ultimately, these songs seem kind of vaguely catchy and memorable, even if they employ that faux-funkiness that I hate in so many trendy new neo-psych records, so I guess only time will tell if I continue to enjoy this. Will definitely have to relisten later and adjust the score from there. At least it’s short—32 minutes, so relistening will be a quick job.

These guys sound like they’d do a well-received Tiny Desk Concert for NPR.

I quite like the cover.

The Damned - Damned Damned Damned (1977)
>punk rock

Damned fun album. 1977 has it's fair share of watershed punk albums that all represented very different forms of the genre (Pink Flag and Marquee Moon with art punk, Talking Heads 77 with new wave, The Clash with pop and reggae, Never Mind the Bollocks with the image) and The Damned definitely represent the lo-fi, guttural, straightforward garage rock-influenced side of punk. It's very simple, very meatheaded, and with some pretty garish, out of place rockabilly/blues-influenced tracks, but you'd be hard pressed to find a more exhilrating, enjoyable, fun thirty minutes.

toe - The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety (2005)
>post-rock, math rock

The instrumental performances are all great, especially the drumming, but this is really just pretty instrumental music with little real depth. It's done very well, definitely, and it's an enjoyable listen, but it's lacking much of anything beyond it's performances. The drumming serves as more of a crutch than anything. The guitar parts are all nicely melodic, but they all blend together with little variation between tracks. The drumming is the real star of the show and I think that's mostly because the rest of the band really has nothing new to bring to the table. Some sparse sound manipulation breaks up the monotony here and there, and while it's nothing incredible, it's very subtle and non-obvious, and as weird as this sounds I have to commend it for making me think my headphones were fucked up. Decent stuff but nothing I'd go insane over.

Modest Mouse - Sad Sappy Sucker (2001)
>lo-fi indie, indie rock, indie pop

I totally get the Thinking Fellers comparisons, a lot of the shorter tracks on here with accordions and weird ambient sounds are very Feller Filler-esque, but not nearly as memorable and not as necessary to the flow and structure of the album. Feller Filler compliments the more structured tracks, these filler pieces kinda take away from the actual songs. The half baked song ideas that show up on the much shorter tracks are pretty lousy as well, they seem like they absolutely could develop into a wonderful track, but as soon as they present their good ideas, they go away. The actual songs, on the other hand, are total early Modest Mouse goodness. The best, most structured tracks are placed on the first half of the album, which makes the second half looks /really/ bad in comparison, but tracks like "It Always Rains on a Picnic" and "Every Penny Fed Car" wouldn't be out of place on Long Drive or Interstate 8. The instrumental work isn't quite as revelatory as it is on an album like The Lonesome Crowded West, but these guys were my age when they recorded these tracks, so who am I to fault him? It very much has the markings of a very, very early debut album. Unstructured, messy, sloppy, and really poorly sequenced, but with some absolute diamonds in the rough.

Manfred Schoof - European Echoes (1969)
>european free jazz

Absolutely insane chaos. Occasionally too busy and chaotic for its own good, and the juxtaposition between the loud and the calm isn't terribly well done, but rarely have I heard a free jazz album with so much weight and power. Kinda like Machine Gun with less restraint and without as much of the compositional genius. All of the performers are fucking geniuses, and they're all at the top of their game, but the general lousiness of the production harms their individual performances and contributes to how busy it gets at times, but in doing this it makes for something completely new and great with how cacophanous this is. Really good.

William Shatner - Has Been (2004)
>spoken word, rock

Shatner's poetry ain't all that great, and neither are the Ben Folds-supplied instrumentals, but his delivery is perfect and I genuinely like the sense of humor the whole record permeates. The partially Henry Rollins-penned "I Can't Get Behind That" is probably my favorite track here, Shatner's delivery is really hilariously impassioned and the piece itself is just very funny, and decently socially conscious. "Together" is the best actual track here, it's the only instrumental that's not really generic and it's a genuinely pretty song, with Shatner's otherwise hammy vocals turned down to a low whisper. Besides these two tracks, I'm not a fan of anything else here. I've heard so much about the "Common People" cover but so much of that track hinges on Jarvis Cocker's vocal delivery in the first chorus, and Shatner and Joe Jackson just can't match up to that, and the pop rock style really doesn't suit it that well. Worth a listen just because of Shatner's delivery and how insane the list of guests on the album is, but just a bland listen instrumentally and lyrically.

yeah, thanks for the rec! can't believe i hadn't heard it already.

I honestly had no idea what to rec you because you've heard basically all my favorite albums and according to your rym profile you don't seem to be a huge fan of shoegaze. I'm glad you got some enjoyment out of the album. There are a couple trash songs on it, but it's super weird how some of the songs actually work really well for me.

whichever floats your boat

most people plan a whole chart out, some people do a freeform chart, and some people like myself haven't made a listening chart in months
>>
>>71295338
Do it however you want. You can do a calendar where you plan it out day by day, or just a collage of albums you randomly go through. Also you can do a free-form chart where you just add things to it as you listen to stuff.

Also you don't even have to do a chart at all, you can just talk about music here.

>Ecophony Gaia vs. Cхoвaйcя
Each of these albums has a wonderful variety of ideas.

"Cхoвaйcя" is a compliation album, so I guess it having variety kind of obvious. Production quality is basically non-existant, but the ukranian underground sure made some interesting stuff. Cool to hear much of it in one place.

Geinoh Yamashirogumi is one of the most accomplished & respected musical collectives in the world, and it shows on Ecophony Gaia. Everything is flawless, rhythms are sharp, production is clean and the whole album is full of interesting depth to sink into.

To put it simply, Geinoh Yamashirogumi is far beyond anything that a loose collective of amateur Ukranian chucklefucks could ever be. The greatest sections of Ecophony Gaia reach much higher than the best tracks on Cхoвaйcя. And, although Gaia takes its dear sweet time, its low/boring sections are nowhere near as low as a few of the more questionable tracks from these Ukranian musicians.

Nyar advances to the finals!

>Le mystère des voix bulgares vs. I Can't Stand the Rain
I don't know if I can even compare these albums. "I Can't Stand the Rain" is a strong work in its own right. Ann doesn't have the best voice in soul, far from it, and the lyrics are blasé conventional whatever stuff, but it works. It's nice. Very nice, actually.

However...

Le mystère features some of the most dense, interesting & engaging choral music I've ever heard. It is bright, evocative, complex and performed with precision. Just amazing stuff. It's not *quite* as evocative and intense as Fly, Fly My Sadness, but hot damn it sure is close.

Fish advances! The finals begin!

Warning: Cheesy review incoming.

Syl Johnson - Is It Because I’m Black
>Chicago Soul, Funk

This has some cool social ideas and the title track is one of the best funk singles I’ve heard but the rest is pretty mediocre. The following track is “Come Together”, which is one of the most flaccid, offensively terrible covers I’ve heard. Yikes. The rest is pretty decent soul/funk but doesn’t stand out in any way, especially compared to the emotional roller coaster of the first two tracks. Okay, not really recommended though.

2.5/5

Mobb Deep - Hell On Earth
>East Coast Hip-Hop, Boom Bap

If you liked The Infamous, you’ll probably get some enjoyment out of this one. The beats are equally brooding and hard-hitting with that classic grimy NY sound. Lyrically, it’s pretty tight as well, with Prodigy and Havoc trading off with their raspy, low-key flows. They’re into the same shit as The Infamous and there’s some great features, with both Method Man and Nas adding verses. That being said, this is kind of missing something. The atmosphere is darker and it’s probably a more cohesive album but there doesn’t seem to be a real standout. Aside from the title track, all these cuts kind of blend together which is a bummer in my mind. The Infamous has “Shook Ones, Pt 2”, which feels like a genre and region defining track. Plus there’s a few other awesome cuts like “Eye for an Eye”, “Right Back at You” and “Survival of the Fittest”. This is kind of missing that which holds it back. That being said, it’s still enjoyable.

Maybe I’m just getting burnt out on boom bap though.

Sam Cooke - Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963
>Soul

I’ve had several conversations with my boss about music history, specifically about concerts. He’s always asking me which musician(s) I wish I could see in their prime, if I were given the chance. His answer is adamantly Bruce Springsteen - he missed out on an early 80s gig in LA because his brother skimped out on tickets. But I’m always changing my answer. Coltrane is kind of the go-to but I’d love to see so many classic musicians that I’m kind of indecisive.

This performance is my new answer and probably will be until I find something more perfect. How an album can be this optimistic, full of life and passionate is kind of astounding to me. Definitely one of the best live performances I’ve heard, with Cooke just belting his heart out, hyping up the crowd and providing endless positivity. The band always jumps in at the perfect moment too. They know how and when to add the right solos, the right notes, the right energy level. They’re so in synch and it isn’t something I was expecting out of a smoother soul artist like Cooke. The crowd gets so into it and for once, it really adds to the atmosphere on here - with the fans just chanting alongside Cooke on some of the tracks.

Maybe I was just in a particularly bad mood when I first heard this and it just managed to strike the right chord. It reminded me of listening to old Johnny Rivers tapes with my dad when I was a little kid and a huge wave of nostalgia and happiness washed over me, as corny as that sounds. I was expecting something mediocre, after some okay live Brown and BB King performances so far. But man, this just had everything I wanted out of soul.

The entire album I downloaded is in cyrillic alphabet so I have no idea what tracks those are. I did enjoy some tracks, though. Svitlana was nice, as usual, but lord some of that stuff was legitimately atrocious.

"Бaнaны кpyглый гoд" for example. Awkward farting bass, the synth is played out of time and mumbled vocals like heck!

That's the Sheik Hi-Fi track, which is admittedly pretty bad (the band itself is pretty bad, really), as is the Radiodello one, but I personally think everything else is really good. "Episode III from Original Performed Soundtrack 'Transilvania Smile'" is one of my favorite songs ever.

The proper tracklisting should have the S. Nianio, Yarn and Inga Blazhchuk tracks listed in English. The Transilvania Smile tracks I was referring to were the forth and ninth tracks respectively.

Have you heard Svitlana's "Kytitsi"? It is literally a track from that album. The whole album is wonderful, similar quality.

I have. Episode III is a totally unique song from the score to a ballet, Episode I is an early take of the song Ostrożni from Kytysti.
