It begins.

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Luben Yordanoff / David Tétard / Claude Desurmont / Daniel Barenboim performing Oliver Messiaen - Quatuor pour la fin du temps (1988)
>modern classical, chamber music

I can't lie, it really does sound apocalyptic. The slow, soft rumblings of the clarinet and violin make way for booming, powerful, apocalyptic washes of sound, which is really impressive for a quartet. I can't say I like the solo performances very much, the movement that focuses exclusively on the clarinet drags on. It creates suspense alright, but the explosion of the track that follows it still seems like it comes out of nowhere. That movement is really the only movement that fails at it's purpose, though, the rest of the piece is rock-solid, it's performed wonderfully, and the ending in particular is beautiful.

what album are you reviewing? Is it fishmans? If not, it probably has a flaw, so talk about those.

Also, try not to reference yourself in the first paragraph of your review. Too many people make that mistake (including me in my runations review) and it turns me off pretty easily.

Eh not that 'exciting' (haha). It's a decent record but it lacks something that the other Stax records I've heard have, Pickett's good but not great and it feels like a slightly phoned in performance from the Stax band. Most of the songs are good but they're in one ear out the other, even the classics like Land of 1000 Dances and 99 and a Half Won't Do (I prefer the Redskins cover). 3-/5

listened to this on the recommendation of someone in the last thread

thought it was properly boring. i went in expecting it to like it but i felt there was something so wimpy and flaccid about it, maybe it was just the way it was recorded or s/t but i wasnt feeling it. songs all way too long and not much happened in them.

i did like the bit in the last tune where all the instruments dropped out and it was just james singing, that was nice

>Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary

I went into this expecting to not like it, since I've never really been a fan of midwest emo and because my rym friends didn't rate it too high. I actually ended up really enjoying it though. It was like being a teenager: the album. Pulling off this teenage angst/ depression feeling in a non-cheesy or just shitty way is pretty hard to do, but this album did it great. Also midwest emo that I enjoy is hard to come by, but sometimes it's greatly done, like this.

There are much fewer distinct songs on here than there are on Stratosphere or Contemporary Movement, and this is honestly a wonderful decision by the band. It amplifies the "drifting thru space with someone you're rather fond of but you're still kinda sad but everything's gonna be okay" aspects of Stratosphere tenfold, almost delving into pure ambient at points. Sometimes it's aimless, sometimes I almost wish a song like "Gold Dust" would come through, but I still really like this.

Signor Benedick the Moor - Maiden Voyage Suite (2016)
>experimental hip hop, conscious hip hop

Benedick is really not the best rapper. His flow is pretty decent on the title track but altogether he's decently corny, and sometimes he seems to trip over his own words. The instrumentals go all over the place, and don't always hit their mark, but the prog influence adds a nice layer to the beats here, and the slight post-punk influence on the first track adds a sense of anxiety that couples nicely with the lyrics. The second track isn't as memorable as the beautiful mess of the first track, but Daveed Diggs puts in a nice guest appearance and the blown-out, bassy production is fun. I'm not in love, but it's a cool EP nonetheless.

Thundercat - The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam (2015)
>neo-soul

The dude's a great bass player and he's got a knack for atmosphere but the songwriting on here is honestly kinda terrible. It's not like there's anything egregiously bad about any particular song, it's just that none of the tracks go anywhere, preferring to stay in extended bass solo territory so Thundercat can flex his bass muscles. "Them Changes" is the only really good song here, the remaining five are very unmemorable atmospheric pieces that prove Thundercat's bass skills and FlyLo's production skills, but do little else to impress. That cover art is sick though.

2.0+

Kid Dakota - So Pretty (2002)
>slowcore, indie rock

Thick, heavy slowcore. The vocalist is reminiscent of a lower-pitched Thom Yorke, but the instrumentals take a lot from the more active, indie rock-based side of slowcore a la Galaxie 500 and lowercase. The bands talents can't carry them through the longer tracks and the tracks where that beautiful thick distorted guitar isn't present, but the shorter, more concise tracks are amazing. Forlorn vocals, fuzzy guitars, heavy drums, the full package. It's not all great, far from it, but the good stuff is damn good. The opener especially.

Duster - 1975 (EP)
>Slowcore, Indie Rock

So I’ve recently become enlightened and learned to enjoy Stratosphere for the slowcore masterpiece that it is, and I’ve decided to go back and check on some of the other Duster releases. And this EP is decent—it’s not quite as catchy or memorable, but I can appreciate the greater emphasis on glitch and electronica here. They somehow make it work with their dusty, worn brand of slowcore.

I love the looping vocal glitch on “The Motion Picture”, and I really love the climax structure of “And Things (Are Mostly Ghosts)”. In fact, that’s probably my favorite track, especially with that whirring organ outro. The tape effect-sounding stuff and warped synthesizer-esque guitar (actually?) on “August Relativity” are great too. The piano balladry and field recordings that closes out the album are simply perfect.

This is my favorite kind of indie rock—not necessarily innovative or amazingly unique, but powered by amazing atmosphere and songwriting.

>Magic the Happening - And Lo, Artifice Did Beget Artifice

This isn’t aggressively bad or anything, but I don’t dig the aesthetic at all. I already don’t like Steely Dan (sue me), so I’m not gonna be too keen on a MIDI version. I’d probably give it a 2, but the heavily processed vocals were ugly and killed its chance of being pleasant background music.

>Bruce Smear - Chlorine

This is really great. It’s got this super squeaky clean production with cool sampling techniques, and it reminds me a little bit of a whacked out futuristic Jet Set Radio soundtrack. It’s kinda like Jam City - Classical Curves but executed in a much better and more funky way. I would recommend this to anyone because it’s quite accessible and about the length of an EP.

>ECCO UNLIMITED - NHK Reminds You to Boost Your Signal

Wasn’t too hot on this. The first track just irritated the shit out of me. The next two tracks were actually quite hypnotic and meditative, but I didn’t really connect with it much overall. There’s better ambient drone out there I’m sure.

>Piper Spray - Omnicron Girls

Another solid one. A fantastic mix of hypnagogic pop and glitch with that perfect lo-fi aesthetic. When the drums kick in and crash high in the mix ahh it’s just beautiful and scratches a great sonic itch. The album unfortunately meanders a lot, but there are some fantastic pop moments on here that make it worth it. I’d recommend it.

Paul Rooney - Lucy Over Lancashire
>Spoken Word, Dub, Noise Pop

Scuzzy female spoken word recordings about England, sprites, a relatively realistic and mundane Satanic (“Satantic with a capital ’S’”) uprising (“through global and industrial capitalism”), and meta-storytelling about the track itself for one 16 minute track. This is set to a diverse and fun gamut of dub, noise pop, and noise rock, occasionally dipping into glitchy tape manipulation.

It’s got that mesmerizing quality that hallmarks all great spoken word stories, although the instrumentation is really half of it at least, so I guess it’s not really comparable to solo or skeletal spoken word like much of Robert Ashley’s.

This was a really fun listen.

more seriously, as a child of the 2000s, i've always had a fascination with that very tinny, completely impractical, slightly uncanny cgi futurescapes like i'd see in europop music videos and low-budget kids movies. i've also had a fascination with repetitive mechanical operations and sounds. i like to hold my ear against my laptop when i put in a cd to hear all the mechanical sounds revving up in warm, clacking tones. the weird post internet shit i like more or less stems from those fascinations, either by embracing or deconstructing those sound and visual qualities.

>>
>>71272207
thanks! glad someone's into it at least.
the internet in the context of art is interesting because of how it's changed within the way it's displayed and used within media as society has integrated it further into everyday life. early on, a majority of artwork using or inspired by the internet and computers merely acted as either a gimmick or a novelty, but as technology has advanced to becoming one of, if not the, defining aspects of human life, it it being treated more and more seriously not just as an artistic tool, but as a separate emotion to dissect and analyze. that is what makes the 2000s and 2010s so important for music as a whole. most electronic software that is being considered revolutionary for the music industry is merely acting as extensions of concepts that have existed as long as music has. the defining feature of modern music is the internet, and that's what makes the post-internet art scene so interesting to me.

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Love Is a Stream
>Noise, Ambient, Drone, Shoegaze

A mind-blowing noise record of many shoegaze-esque paradoxes—washes upon washes of thundering harsh heavy, but beautiful warm dreamy noise, and really deafeningly powerful, but also so immediately gentle. And that’s not the only thing shoegaze-y about it. Despite being billed as a noise record it still sounds remarkably guitar-based, so Brian Eno might have to cede the “warm jet” descriptor for his guitar sounds—Jefre Cantu-Ledesma’s are the clear rightful owner to the tag. But really, either way, this album has it all: amazing attention to detail, texture, atmosphere, variety—everything you could possibly wish for in a noise record.

I know this review was pretty incoherent, but I’ve never been good at describing things I enjoy. Anyway, if you haven’t already, give this album a listen. I know I should've listened to this ages ago when I first wishlisted it. It’s simply transcendentally blissful—hair raising at every turn (although admittedly it does have a bit of a tapered ending).

Herbie Hancock - Headhunters (1973)
>Jazz-funk
This has gotta be the catchiest jazz album ever (if you can even call it jazz). Even though it has a lot of commercial appeal, it is still an engaging and unrelentingly groovy take on jazz. It's also a grower, since I wasn't completely sold on it upon first listen. It's hard to name a favorite track, since all four are different but great in their own way.
8

Robert Ashley - Wolfman (2003)
>Electroacoustic, noise
HOLY SHIT, the title track was recorded in 1964???? This was so far ahead of its time it's ridiculous. The title track was some of the most intense music I've ever heard. It made me wanna just scream AAAAHHHHHHHH into a microphone like Ashley did. The Bottleman, at over 40 minutes, dragged this down a bit, but it was decent in its own right.
8

Boris - Flood (2000)
>Drone, post-rock, experimental rock
Part I was a phase shifting minimalist riff that eventually got taken over by repeated crashing "waves" of sound. Pretty damn epic (>using epic unironically). Part II was a pretty guitar piece, but nothing too special imo. Part III is where the drone metal (and vocals) kicks in. It ends with a great guitar riff that slowly decreases in intensity. This riff is carried over into Part IV, but used with even more subtlety. It then disintegrates (Basinski, take notes) into an ambient soundscape until the end. Overall, it was well-executed but I do think it takes a bit too long to get to where it's going and once it gets there it's over too quickly.

The first three tracks were REALLY fucking good. I wasn't too impressed by the rest, unfortunately. I was also expecting much more "avant-garde" on this. Oh well.
6

Aine O'Dwyer - Music for Church Cleaners (2012)
>Ambient, Christian Liturgical Music
This is really cozy ambient music created with an organ with occasional sounds of children playing in the background. My favorite parts were when the sounds of the vacuum cleaner mixed with the droning organ, creating a lovely blanket of noise. Most of the tracks however were just average ambient pieces, but this album had some really awesome moments.

It's not bad, but it nowhere near matches that title track. My main complaint would be that (jangle rant imminent) it's too long.
>>
>>71273409
it's an archival compilation album. i cut it some slack, and i'm more resistant to droney stuff.

>>
>>71273433
You cut it slack because it's archival? Wut

But yeah I'm a sucker for drone, but it was a little too minimal for me.
>>
>>71273382
glad you liked Flood to some extent. It's for people that really like a fucking crescendo/decrescendo for nearly an hour almost exclusively.

Also, it's worth noting that The Shape of Jazz to Come came out in '59 and was one of the most game-changing albums ever, especially for the genre. It is considered the first Avant-Garde jazz albums (with a few notable exceptions) and is arguably one of the most influential in the genre.

Not that your opinions are wrong or anything, but not much Avant-Garde jazz existed at all before that album.

I really don't think you'll like Brave Little Abacus but I'd love to see your opinions anyways. Karma is also a must.
>>
>>71273480
well it's intended to be separate pieces, but it's presented as a full album. the bottleman would be much better acclaimed if it was its own album.

I was hoping for an actual recc :P if you hate it that much you must have an alternative that you point too and say "this is so much better than X how can you possibly like X" or else it seems like you just don't like the genre and you opinion is less useful.
>>
>>71273483
yeah I was actually surprised when I saw that it was released in '59. Those first three tracks were something special

>Jerry Paper - Big Pop for Chameleon World

Interestingly enough, I was playing this album and my roommate walked in and asked “oh man, you’re listening to Jerry Paper?” This really threw me off cause he’s got pretty average taste though he likes a lot of the stuff I show him. He actually loves Forca Bruta and keeps playing it in the shower. Apparently, he saw him open for Mac Demarco and really loved him so hey small world I guess.

Anyway, about the music. It’s solid. It’s a mix of futuristic Brian Eno, Animal Crossing, philosophy, and pure ear candy, like approaching ASMR levels. The compositions are honestly incredible in their simplicity and the arrangement of all these weird video game instruments leaves a lot of negative space for his murmuring vocals and lyrics to glisten softly. Again, it’s an album with superb pop moments, which Orange Milk has an eye for. I’d highly recommend this to anyone into weird pop.

I mean it's hard to rec something to someone who you don't know and have zero clue what they like and don't like. Should I just randomly pick one of my favorite albums or something?

If I'm supposed to tell you whats better in that genre then idk pretty much any other electronic album I've ever heard, pick any random one from a mucore chart or something and that'll work. I'm not huge into electronic though so I don't know if I could give you something better that sounds very similar to Daft Punk. I may just dislike electro-disco in general, idk.

As I said in my review though, M83 - Junk was considered cheesy by many people, it was electro-disco-y, and it was a lot better than Discovery.

I'm always puzzled by flat earthers. I think there's at least some intriguing ideas behind other conspiracy theories.

But a mass organization convincing people that the Earth is round instead of flat seems like kind of a dumb premise. Like what's the point? If there's a mass organization conspiring to do something, wouldn't they be doing something more worthwhile? I don't get it

Only two more albums but damn this has been a fun ride. S/O to Triangle for these reggae recs.

[1/2]

The Melodians - Rivers of Babylon

Another early reggae album that’s obviously early. Most of the tracks are pretty cheesy, like Carribbean covers of 50s doo wop songs. While that was a huge plus on Engine 54, it’s a huge weakness on here. The tracks are boring, sounding surprisingly generic and underdeveloped. They barely feel like reggae, with lots of soul influence kind of watering down what could’ve been good. Usually, that would’ve been a plus in my book but on here, it feels awkward. It’s understandable though, this is reggae produced in 1970, so it’s still (afaict) in its nascent stages.

Cozy little piece of reggae history and it was worth checking out for that alone. Not the most consistent though.

[2/2]

The Congos - Heart of the Congos

Having Lee Perry on production does wonders. This album is really just a testament to that fact, as he adds a nice dub kind of atmosphere to some pretty solid reggae tracks. The songs float warmly in this echo-drenched mist, kind of bouncing and grooving along. Perry doesn’t overdo it though, as this album has a lot of subtleties. There’s some extra reverb, weird little shifts in echo and the occasional watery drum splash. A lot of the songs seem to slowly pan from one speaker to the other, or at least there were quite a few moments throughout. I thought that was kind of a nice touch and once again - these moments aren’t ever too exaggerated or over-the-top, which I appreciated.

For a reggae album, this also has a surprising amount of variety. The opener, “Fisherman” is so happy-go-lucky, with a really catchy riff and an awesome group-sung chorus. It feels very traditional and Caribbean, kind of what I was expecting from this style. “Congoman” sounds weirdly like some electronic music I’ve heard, with the drums piercing through in this really sharp almost Kraftwerk-esque rhythm. It’s dark and spiritual and couldn’t be a further contrast from the opener. This kind of variety kind of continues all throughout the album, with songs like “Children Crying” serving as a nice lighter cuts and “La La Bam” sounding more traditional in a way. Kind of cool to hear that, considering reggae has a reputation as a repetitive genre.

Overall, a very enjoyable album, some of the cooler roots reggae I’ve heard.

Nothin much dude, pretty low-key Sunday. Just listening to the Lioness again and trying to play some BF1 but it seems like the EA servers are down

Your post reminds me to give that album another listen. I don't remember liking it but I didn't give it much of a chance t b h

>Sarlo Akrobata
>all these other yugopop albums

DUDE I was so into that shit when I was like 16-17 that shit was the booooomb
I initially wanted to reissue Sarlo Akrobata in the states so bad I contacted Suzy Records and PTP RGB's successor in ex-yugoslavia to obtain the rights. They never responded :(

Opika Pende is a good comp overall, solid grooves desu

Abner Jay is a blues god

All these gospel albums are choice. I prefer gospel funk/gospel disco tho :/

I'll listen to Innercity Griots and Gang Starr

A message from Mozambique looks interesting, I'll take a look-see.
