What's your AOTY so far?

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>"You have to conquer yourself, and take control of yourself. I make fun of a lot of people, like Brian Wilson, because they don't have control over themselves. I think they're largely phonies. They use their illness as an excuse. I have no mercy for that. I know Wilson idolizes me; he does interviews; he writes his autobiography about me. I know, I know, I know. It's sad, y'know, but I don't know whether you can feel sorry for untalented people. Maybe he's not that talented. Maybe he's overrated. Maybe. Jimi Hendrix was not overrated. Janis Joplin was not overrated. I feel sorry that they died, because they shouldn't have. They should have been a little smarter. Brian Wilson outlived his brothers for God's fucking sake. How do you figure that? Carl Wilson - pretty bright guy. Dennis - pretty silly guy; y'know, a muppet. And Brian outlives them? But maybe Brian wasn't that talented to begin with, and we're burdening him with that. We make these people more than they are. I don't feel sorry for Brian Wilson; I never thought he was that talented to begin with. I'm glad he idolizes me; I wish that Jimi Hendrix idolized me. I heard he did. I'd be more impressed if somebody with a brain idolized me."

my 1993rd-1999th rym ratings:
>Borbetomagus - Barbed Wire Maggots
weird noises
6/10
>Spacemen 3 - Dreamweapon
The best buildup to the best not real psych rock song there ever darn was.
6/10
Index - The Index [aka "The Black Album"]
This is tagged as surf rock. By "surf" they mean sliding along the floor with your hands tied together trying to catch up with your friends who kicked you out of the car and are driving away to go to the beach faster than you could ever hope to catch up to. Yet you persist.
6/10
>Antônio Carlos Jobim - Wave
If there's a purer form of music than good bossa nova, I haven't heard it.
8/10
>Ground-Zero - Plays Standards
Was a big fan of 革命京劇 (Revolutionary Pekinese Opera) Ver.1.28 [Kakumeikyōgeki], so I'm glad this album turned out to be good as well. I like the more direct brutal prog influence. Also, if there was any CD that was allowed to do the "vinyl crackle at the end of the album" thing, it's this one.
8/10
>Townes Van Zandt - s/t
Don't associate yourself with people who listen to everything "except country and hip-hop." You don't need that negativity.
8/10
>Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
I said that 22, a Million would have been better as a straightforward folk album. Maybe Bon Iver are just shitty.

The Black Heart Procession - 2
>Indie Rock, Slowcore

Dark, somber songwriting meets depressing piano ballad melodies (think Erik Satie) and kind of kitschy accompaniment (organ, strings, horns, dada electronica, singing saw, etc) [think the Beatles if they had a collective aneurism]. The result is haunting and deeply unsettling. Very infrequently could I call this music satisfying or resolving (even when the dissonance does technically resolve)—it’s always teetering somewhere. Even when the band produces a more rocking ’n’ rolling indie rock song, it’s still… off.

Also, gotta love the track titles: “Blue Tears”, “A Light So Dim”, “Gently Off the Edge”, “My Heart Might Stop”, “Beneath the Ground”, etc.

7-/10

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Flying Microtonal Banana (2017)
>psychedelic rock, garage rock

The sheer volume of how much stuff these guys put out (nine albums in five years is fucking admirable, come on) seems to make all of their releases very solid and consistent but never nearly approaching masterpiece territory. This continues on the path of Nonagon Infinity by introducing something of a gimmick, as the title suggests, nearly every track here makes use of microtonal tuning. The lack of typical melody that comes with melodic tuning gives a really surreal, apocalyptic feel to the tracks that it appears on, and "Rattlesnake" is just such a cool goddamn track. However, the more traditional tracks pale in comparison to these tracks. They're good pop songwriters, but the traditional songs seem really tame and generic compared to the microtonal tracks. I like everything on here, but the general mediocrity of the more straightforward tracks really hurt what could otherwise be a really interesting, forward-thinking album.

2.5+

Margo Guryan - Take a Picture (1968)
>sunshine pop, psychedelic pop

A very precious little album. The songwriting is light, the instrumentation is light, Guryan's voice is light and pretty as hell, it's all just a very easily digestible album. It makes for a nice listen, but a weightless one that leaves little impact. The songwriting seems formulated to have as little of an impact as possible despite being perfectly pleasant. Does boast some killer keyboard and drum work, though, and the psych jam of a closing track is a welcome surprise.

Telstar Drugs - Telstar Drugs (2012)
>experimental rock

Definitely one of the best guitar albums I've heard in quite some time. Every guitar part here is a really cool mix of delayed, reverbed soundscape stuff and really catchy math rock-esque licks. The guitar carries the record, and that's a plus and a crutch. The songwriting can often drift off into aimless territory when the guitars focus exclusively on creating soundscapes, I don't like the vocals at all really, some of the "world music" influences seem really ill-fitting, and the lo-fi production is a slight hinderance when it comes to making the sounds of the record really pop. More often than not, the longer tracks really aren't my thing and they definitely run their course before they finish ("Piglet", especially). The more concise tracks that blend pop and experimental guitar work, on the other hand, are fucking great, "Blue Ink" is really just a stellar track. I could see this growing on me, but for now I can't get past the lacking songwriting, apart from the guitar parts.

2.5+

Robbie Basho - Venus in Cancer (1969)
>american primitivism

Basho is woefully under-represented in my personal canon of primitivism, and I really don't know why. He's got a much different take on the style than Fahey or Bull, mainly because he lacks the key component of a blues influence. Basho definitely takes a lot more from hindustani classical music and avant-garde music than the fingerpicking stylings of blues guitarists, and as such his performances here are very, very, VERY free-flowing. It's hypnotic as all hell, and while not much really happens, per se, compared to other big primitivism releases (which is a negative, my favorite thing about the genre is how periods of soft, hypnotic fingerpicking can just /explode/), it's a fucking beautiful release nonetheless. And I really like his vocals, bite me, he's definitely got a Tim Buckley-esque quality to him.

Robert Previte Quintet - Bump the Renaissance (1986)
>jazz

Future Zorn collaborator starts off his career with a really underwhelming, predictable jazz album. Previte's done tons more interesting stuff, including percussion on "Clap Hands", my favorite track off of Rain Dogs, which is why it's so weird to see him stay with such a typical, non-exciting sound here. There's nothing technically wrong with the album, all of the performances are on point and the production is shockingly good for an '80s jazz album, especially regarding the drums, but the composition is just so lacking. There are soem decently cool avant-garde moments here and there when the band embraces minimalism, but there's really nothing to write home about at all. Pleasant but bland.

i had my first drunk person experience yesterday!

so i've got a good friend that i knew was a drinker but i thought it was something he could do in moderation and yesterday me him and two other friends got together. me and another pal don't drink but the aforementioned friend was going to town and the host was lightly drinking, so over a game of scrabble they proceeded to get decently hammered while me and the other friend just watched everything go down.

at some point the drinker friend had managed to consume about four decent-sized glasses of liquor meant to be consumed in shot form without us knowing, and as such he started /reaaaaaaly/ getting drunk. he was loud as hell, hilariously incoherent, he spilled his drink on me, the whole shebang.

then in the span of about five minutes he turned from funny drunk to incoherent vomity drunk. keep in mind that this is the first time i've ever legitimately dealt with a drunk person due to the fact that i'm never the friend that the drinking friend actually drinks or smokes around. he was stumbling everywhere, spitting on himself, dude was not in good shape.

flash forward to about an hour later and i'm cleaning puke out of a bathtub and unclogging said bathtub with a plunger we had to run out and buy at midnight.

and this is why i don't drink

Pierre Akendengué - Afrika Obota (1976)
>singer/songwriter, central african music

Jesus, this starts off wonderfully. The first track is a complete masterpiece, it's incredibly delicate but so full of life and bombastic, and beautifully melodic to boot. The next couple tracks follow in this vein, but there's a somewhat noticeable quality decline around halfway through. The tracks stop feeling terribly natural, and a lot of them take on a bit of an easy listening, synthetic quality. They're still written very well and Akendengué could sing the phone book and it'd sound good, but they lack what makes the first couple of tracks so damn great. It's a very good album that suffers from some very weird production choices and a definite quality drop.

Darren Keen - It's Never Too Late to Say You're Welcome (2017)
>footwork

Gotta say, I'm coming around on a lot of Orange Milk's stuff. I might not like everything they've put out, but at least they're constantly putting out /interesting/ stuff. This has the privilege of being both interesting and legitimately good. Keen throws a lot of stuff at the listener and not everything sticks, but he hits that perfect sweet spot of harsh, pummeling, danceable drums and contemplative, incredibly well put together sound collages without ever sacrificing the quality of one or the other. Some tracks go nowhere, but at least they do that with wonderful sound design.

Bummer that that's how you get exposed to alcohol. Shit like that goes down when you're around people that don't know their limits or are just reckless about the whole thing. Dealing with drunk people for the first time was a completely awful experience for me too so I unfortunately know the feeling. It doesn't get *that* much better but hopefully you'll gradually start drinking with people who are more experienced and less likely to be idiots

Feels redundant to say this but don't let that discourage you from drinking, especially if you aren't a complete dunce about it.

Norman McLaren - Begone Dull Care

Are you a fan of abstract art? Do you enjoy all the features abstract has to offer? If you do enjoy all the shapes, splatters, colors and other features of abstract art then Norman McLaren and Evelyn Lambert's Begone Dull Care is the film for you.

Boy, what a wild ride. Essentially, the film is an art museum that you can visit with just your eyes and view all the paintings in under 8 minutes. In addition to that is a solid musical accompaniment by the Oscar Peterson Trio playing some sweet jazz to complement the art. These two elements of audio and visuals work together to showcase mastery that fascinated me well.

I'm really amazed at this film honestly. The effort put into this must've been insane. All that effort was certainly worth it though cause the result was lovely. This is the kind of film where you can't look away for one second or you'll miss an image or two that you may possibly love.

Does anybody know this song by Tool I'll try to describe.
Overall it's quite a melodic and relaxed sing with constant guitar (no crazy solos) and couldve had a good bit of picking in it. Similar enough go to their sing Sober and the quiet parts of 46 and 2( where he says crawling on my belly) if anything.
it's not a very sad or quiet but definitely on the relaxed side of things.
The video is of a stick man almost voodoo doll going about his way. It was shown on tv quite often.

Folks can you recommend me something? Don't be too harsh on me folks.

These all are prob pleb tier by /mu/ standards, but I just like to imagine about my dreamgame, doom, fallout, souls, isaac and other stuff thrown together with different aesthetics from berserk, babylon, sumeria ancient greece and rome etc., whatever.

Yeah just recommend me something similar to these:

>Jandek - Houston Saturday

Rep, MIKE FUCKING WATT and Stefan González. A 35 minute performance!

Not a big fan though. I feel like the entire show is about one interrupting the other. There are moments of synchronization and that is where everything sounds awesome (mostly when Watt and Sterling click to the more “steady” drumming from Stefan) but it happens very rarely. It’s a real pity cause Rep/Mike Watt is something unbelievably interesting in concept, but the jam is sort of lazy. Rep does some harmonics shit from time to time and around the 24th minute Watt goes into a nice groove and it actually works for a little while! Then González messes the whole vibe imo. It does stay “acceptable” till the end, but cmon! I felt like this needed to be much more fun.

The stuff Rep shouts out is fun though. Great vocal delivery! I think the whole “I Know I’m Alive / Excited” title thing is fucking awesome. Poetry of gain appears very rarely in Jandek’s oeuvre and it is nice to see it here.

Disappointing but not terrible. Good thing it is short. Maybe it was a cooler experience in the Houston heat.

Godz - Contact High With the Godz (1966)
>freak folk

Deserves credit for being pretty much the first psychedelic folk release, but that's pretty much all the good I can say about this. It's "freak folk" in it's purest form, deconstructed, random, atonal, and a complete fucking mess. Most freak folk (mainly the trifecta of First Utterance, Exuma, and Sung Tongs, all wonderful albums) seems to just be mistagged psychedelic folk, this is the only thing I'd truly describe as freak folk with a heavy emphasis on the freak. It's an interesting listen because of that, but it's a really, /really/ irritating listen too. There's a lot of wailing, a lot of terrible guitar playing, some occasional misguided attempts into tuneful songwriting, it's a total mess of an album and not really much of an enjoyable one. Interesting from a historical standpoint and worth a listen, but expect something that's really not enjoyable in any sense.

i might need to do a tiebreaker with EPs for yamir and shamepai!

Roy Haynes, Phineas Newborn, Paul Chambers - We Three (1958)
>hard bop

I've come to terms with the fact that, barring a few exceptions, piano trio jazz really isn't my thing. A lot of it is just too light for me to really latch onto, and this is no exception. It's a lot more compositionally dense than other albums in the style, with loads of super complex piano lines and some really interesting chord changes, but the piano is really the only draw. The bass and the drums are nice, but they really don't add much to the music, and while Newborn's piano is awesome, it can't completely carry the album. It's alright, and I get the appeal, but it's really not for me.

>Fishmans - 96.12.26

god fucking DAAAAAAAAAAAAMN how do they do it. here's my rym review:

"Why the fuck does this have less then 150 ratings? Why have 56 of my friends listened to 98.12.28 and only 11 this?

Okay 98.12.28 is a perfect 5/5, but this is still REALLY fucking good, and it's a crime how so many people adore Fishmans but so few have listened to this. If you like Fishmans even a decent amount, this is worth your time, and if you love Fishmans like me, then you need to listen to this ASAP.

This versions "Long Season" is just as good (maybe better, not sure yet) as 98.12.28's, but the rest of the album isn't quite as god-tier (still very very good though), which is why it gets 4.5/5 and not a 5/5. Damn though, the beginning and end of Long Season is easily one of the most amazing things I've ever heard."

B.B. King - Live at the Regal
>Blues, Electric Blues

I can see the appeal. His voice reaches really rapturous, quivering yelp highs, and there are some great electric guitar solos. The recording quality is also pretty remarkable, while still highlighting the live quality of the music—you can hear the crowd interaction, and the guitar sound soars around the stage. Speaking of crowd interaction, that’s one of the cooler things about this record. King is an excellent showman, and knows how and when to get the crowd involved.

I enjoy the blues cuts (most tracks) a lot more than the jazzy cuts (“You Upset Me Baby”, “Woke Up This Morning’”)

6+/10

YOU HAVEN'T FUCKING LISTENED TO CROMAGNON??

considering how you reacted to Contact High you might only only be fond of the first track though.
Although I would say Orgasm is far more of an interesting, organized, and less irritating album than the Godz

Have you for real heard almost no Buckley? Jangle would be disappointed.

Rec is Starsailor if you really haven't heard it.

yesssss 96.12.26 has a lot of that dope raw dub-influence that I in a way really miss from 98.12.28

was it the score that did it or the fact that he called it 96.12.26

Now that you mention it, it probably should have taken over Zappa vs. Abrams... Hmm...
