listen to it, goddamn it

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

As a pretty big fan of the show it's not all amazing. It definitely has its shittier, slower moments, and in some seasons the cars look like hotwheels. Not for everyone but I love it.

for some reason they mixed 3d car animation with 2d car animation

they thought using both styles interchangeably even sometimes having back to back shots where they switch between 2d and 3d would be a good idea

>It definitely has its shittier, slower moments
i read the first 7 books of the manga when i was younger, the show has SO MUCH FILLER compared to the manga. like, they made the first four books of the manga into one entire season. that's how bad it is.

I love the show sorta ironically, but yeah the cars are hilarious when they look like shit.

>they made the first four books of the manga into one entire season
for a show adapted practically right along side a manga, that's not even that bad.

I'd rather a show have decent, slow filler than a really shitty last half that makes no sense written by the people that have nothing to do with the original story (lookin' at you FMA).

Do you like the soundtrack yamma?

So is /daily/ just /chart/ but better?

>Kowloon_Walled_City - Yoga Marsh
Interesting short and sweet sound collage harsh noise thing, didn't do much to keep my interest though. 6/10

>William Onyeabor - Everything you Sow
Really beautiful vintage african synthpop, with a surprisingly minimalist structure. 7/10

>Steve Hauschilt - Strands
Very very average new agey ambient. Like global communication but more boring. Has some pretty moments. 6/10

>Tristan Perich - 1-bit Symphony
When you buy this, it comes as a little machine embedded in a jewel case that literally plays the album live off of a microchip. The music itself is really pretty and warm melodically, and even if it was harsh and difficult to listen to, it was very charming. 8/10

>Lori Mckenna - The Bird and the Rifle
Some poetic contemporary country, will probably bump rating up when I get further into the lyrics. 6/10

Your eyes are too far apart. Nose is definitely crooked. The shape of your face is not aesthetically pleasing at all. You look like a 3/10 with make up in this photo. I don’t even want to imagine what you look like without make up. I actually just threw up in my mouth, just thinking about it. Your head is too big (although that may be, because of your giraffe neck posture). As for your hair, lol. Seriously, do something. You look like a horse.

Stare at your face for more than 5 seconds, and you will see how ugly you are. The eyes which are too far apart is what ruins/damages an already ugly face even further. Unfortunately for you, that can’t be surgically fixed, lol. Your arms are way too long. lol at how they hang by your sides. Kind of reminds me of lurch. As for your tits, we all know there is extra padding there. Don’t even let me start on your pale complexion. It only works if you look hot. Unfortunately, you do not look hot. Its hard to sum up a creature like you in one word. ‘UGLY’ would be unfair, since it doesn’t reflect how repulsive you look. GROTESQUE is stretching it. But somewhere in between, is where you would be, on the scale of an average man.

I’m sorry if my words seem a little harsh. Just so you know, I sugar coated this post as much as possible.

Have a nice day

wow holy shit, an accurate review for once
>>
>>71187015
>Your arms are way too long
I’m so fucking sick of people on here acting like long arms are inherently weaker, and have an obligation to justify their length to you. Almost every review of a long arm here starts inside of a hole and ponders whether it was able to climb out, as though it’s very existence inconveniences you. As though anything over 25 inches triggers an alarm and automatically gets a point deducted. As though one 3 foot arm has to be as good and different as 2 seperate arms. As though you’re sacrificing something by giving a person more time to look at their arm than is usually required of you, despite the fact that you may have already seen five or six arms in a rating session without moaning about length. Does there have to be 6 vastly different mini arms compacted in there to keep your retarded ass intrigued? Have you become so ADD-riddled that only fingers and toes maintain your attention, or is it so you can add more superficial numbers to your ARM ‘score’ to give the appearance you’ve consumed more of the medium, and thus acquired more knowledge? Is this a natural side effect of consuming arms at a high pace; the desire to be done with one piece of arm so you can retire it forever and move on to the next? If a 3 foot arm has a defaultively lower starting score than a 2 inch toe, are you even interested in limb discovery at that point, or elitism and completionism?

If every finger is an 8/10 and you give the arm a 6 because it’s “long, boring, samey and doesn't justify it's length”, you’re a fucking moron. Especially for whole bodies. Stop using long as an inherently negative descriptor, and stop acting like they're a chore to look at.
Rant over.

go through the non-worthwhile Fahey albums too. i haven't listened to em all but even shitty ones like after the ball are cool to listen to.

then go onto other bigguns like Leo Kottke, Peter Lang (make sure to check out the Fahey/Kottke/Lang split!), Sandy Bull, George Stavis, and Suni McGrath. then explore newer stuff like Six Organs of Admittance, Currituck County, Daniel Bachman, James Blackshaw, and even William Tyler if you're in the mood for some really streamlined primitivism. then just listen to some blues.

also, the Fahey tribute album is shockingly decent from what I've heard, Pelt's take on "Sunflower River Blues" is a big highlight, and Sufjan turns in a very cool, very Sufjan rendition of "Commemorative Transfiguration & Communion at Magruder Park"

>Nik Bartsch's Ronin - Holon
Jangle is bottling this final round badly. Pleasant enough I guess but (in)offensively so. Going by Jangle and others reviews I should be loving it with it's groove and repetition but I've never listened to ECM Jazz before and I'm not feeling it, I can't get into the groove at all, it all feels very dull and too calculated (not 100% sure on using that word but I think it gets my point across). 2/5

Please don't bully me jangle pal

>Isengrind / TwinSisterMoon / Natural Snow Buildings - The Snowbringers Cult
I can't really describe what's so great about Natural Snow Buildings. There's a good chunk of The Snowbringers Cult that is just pleasant but when the songs are good they're damn near transcendental. Inuk's Song is phenomenal, there's such a great feeling of beauty in their music. Not really sure what to rate it since the highs are incredibly high but there aren't too many of them but 3.5+/5

Samuel Baron / Bob Nagel / Al Cohn / Al Howard / Jack Maxin / David Tudor / Frances Magnes performing Stefan Wolpe - Passacaglia: First Recordings 1954 (1996)
>serialism, chamber music

The major draw to Wolpe's compositional style is that he manages to make pieces that are so completely and utterly dissonant have very defined form and structure. They seem like they should fall apart at any moment, but they never do. On the Sonata, the violin and piano intertwine with each other perfectly, the violin takes on the notes and rhythms that the piano needs to stay together and vice versa, and the general angularness of the sound is really cool. The solo piano piece is fairly dull, however. It's missing that interplay it has with the violin, and a lot of it just seems like aimless noodling. For how good the piano and violin pieces are, the album's main draw is the quartet that closes it out. The violin is replaces with percussion, a trumpet, and a saxophone, and the natural boldness of these three instruments adds a very textural element to the dissonant compositional style. The piano is definitely pushed to the side, but the remaining instruments do more than a good enough job of keeping everything together. Really cool listen.

Solomon Burke - Rock ’n Soul
>Soul, Blues

He has a very smooth voice, but the backing orchestration makes this soul nearly blue eyed. It’s very lush and pop-oriented. Doesn’t feel as genuine as show-y. The inclusion of blues and rock tropes though, in guitar and rocksteady rhythm, make this more of an odd hybrid creature than a complete commercial cash-in soul sellout. At times (“Someone to Love Me”) it even sounds like funk.

(Reflecting on this album and its title, it is now obvious to me why this album sounds like a mix of pop rock and soul.)

Ok Jerry! I’m shaking, I’m shaking, okay? Please Jesus, Jerry I have a family, please Jerry have mercy!

Jokes aside, Jerry Lee Lewis makes piano rock so intense. His backing band is spectacular too. He’s mostly doing standards here, but he does them so well I can’t complain. The proto-punk label is only partly in jest, apparently.

Also I've been listening to your tourney recs, but I'm too lazy to edit the picture, so I'll get around to that another time, here's some veeery quick thoughts:

Patty Waters - Sings
There's a lot of nice subtle stuff going on here, but I feel it kinda gets ruined when she starts screaming, even if the screaming is quite beautiful it took away its subtleness for me.

~

Salem - King Night
This hits fucking hard and I love it. Very nice textures, good chopping and screwing.

+/!

Miles Davis - Filles de Kilimanjaro
Not really my kind of fusion, was kind of disappointed as Miles has made some of my fav fusion like Get Up With It.

~

Al Green - Let's Stay Together
Beautiful stuff, amazing amount of emotion in his voice.

+

Coultrain - Jungle Mumbo Jumbo
Meh, not nearly funky enough.

-

Joao Gilberto - Chega de Saudada
Very nice, not nearly as boring as Getz/Gilberto.

Robert Bresson - Au Hasard Balthazar
[1966]

The most reasonable explanation I found on why people love this film is that it reaches a state of cinematic purity which is admirable. The characters are simple and symbolic, the acting and the filming are distant, almost sleepy, and the scenes are blunt and fade one into the other.
It follows the life of a donkey named Balthazar, and while the story isn't entirely told with his POV I felt that the way things and events just pass by without leaving any emotion resembles the passivity of the animal. Some beautiful, iconic shots too, but sadly i only appreciate it in retrospect: what I got out of it is that its aim was to be leaving me like "Eh, so what?"; and that's not enough to make me love it.

>明田川荘之 [Shoji Aketagawa], 三上寛 [Kan Mikami] & 石塚俊明 [Toshiaki Ishizuka] - 大勘定 (Daikanjyo)
Just brilliant. Every instrument here is expertly played and the atmosphere is fantastic, really it's impressive how each instrument sounds so great on it's own while still coming together to create such an atmosphere and I think the raw vocals can take credit for a lot of that. I expected this to be less tuneful for some reason, to be more of a freakout but everything is so masterfully done. 4+/5 for now.

>Ketil Bjornstad & David Darling - The River
Enjoyed this one quite a bit, the piano is nice and comes together well with the cello to create a calm atmosphere. 3/5

The Beatles - Yellow Submarine

>Pop rock, film score

The first half of Yellow Submarine is a handful of hit-and-miss Beatles song that they were forced to do. For the most part, they're uninteresting, but a couple are decent. 2.5/5

The last half is the film score for Yellow Submarine. I don't know much about film scores, but I'm fairly certain this is subpar at its best. There's some okay bits sprinkled here and there, but It's usually not developed enough, and comes off flat and flimsy, even it is a score. 1.5/5

>Ground Zero - Revolutionary Pekinese Opera ver. 1.28

My primary experience with this band was Plays Standards, a fun showcase of avant garde turntablism and jazz-rock, but it never really stood out to me as something incredible. So I look into the band a bit more, and I see essentially universal praise for Revolutionary Pekinese Opera. I download the album, put it on, aaaand meh. I didn’t care for it at all, and it has sat in my library for a few months now. I never rated it because I didn’t feel as though I gave it a fair shake, but I never felt the need to go back to it.

Still, every so often I’d see yet another review lauding the album, and it made me wonder what I was missing out on. I mean, I’m no stranger to noise and weirdness, but whatever the album was doing just wasn’t clicking. Until now. I guess I finally was able to pick apart what was happening and not let it become background noise. It’s quite a commanding album in that regard, but it’s incredibly rewarding. The opening track is probably the largest obstacle to get through. It is an unrelenting wall of sound that builds slowly and repetitively for nine minutes, throwing all kinds of things directly in your face. Once you’re through it though, that’s where things really kick off, which is not to say that the opener is bad by any means. It reminds me of the opener to “Leaves Turn Inside You” except much longer. It’s like a barrier to entry. “Welcome to the Salty Spittoon, how tough are ya?”

(1/2)
>>
>>71199849
Anyway, like I said, once you eat that bowl of nails, what follows is incredible and difficult to describe. The samples are all fucking perfect. Every one of them. And the fuzzed out rock music that accompanies it fits so perfectly with the whirlwind of noise, it’s kind of crazy. First off, you hear these relentless blasts of compressed horn samples that sound like a hellish Saturday Night Live band doomed to eternally repeat the final five seconds of the opening forever. In the following track, you are treated to layers of noise and voice samples played on top of some schizophrenic guitar riffs that once again seem to fit perfectly. And there’s this strange sample of a melody in the background that keeps appearing that then shifts to become the focus of the next track. Yes, they fucking sample a song that they are just about to play and it just works so damn well.

And just when I thought the album couldn’t get any better, they do the impossible: show restraint. The typical MO of these kinds of albums is to just assault you with noise, and I’d be fine with that, I like noise. However, Ground-Zero decides to give listeners a break and crafts one of the most beautifully calm tracks I’ve heard yet (appropriately named Paraiso 1 which means paradise), and one that I’d never expect to get. The female vocal sample they use on this track is so heavenly. I want to hear it when I die. Again, I am reminded of one of my favorite albums, Levels and Degrees of Light, that also gives you the calm before the storm, it shows mastery of the build and the release and is integral to experiencing an album in my opinion.

I could go on forever attempting to describe what I hear, but there’d be no point. Most of you have listened to it by now and know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t heard this yet, check it out. It’s quite something, and I have zero complaints about it.

https://thecutemusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-end-of-everything

I've released an album today which I'm quite proud of, it's probably the project of all of my musical projects that has taken the most effort. I was inspired by the really 21st century ideology of artists like James Ferraro, but I think I took more musical influence from Oneohtrix Point Never and some contemporary hip hop music. I wanted to combine the overly clean, synthetic feel of corporate, supermarket and advert -esque music that portray a falsified existence of constant happiness and satisfaction (think the rich white families in Apple adverts) with wonkier, occasionally distorted production and alternative methods of composition to reflect the actuality of life – that is, unexpected, irrational and largely improvised.

This might all come across as pretentious to you but it'd be appreciated if anyone listened to it and possibly gave their thoughts. I put the genre tags as "experimental, ambient, classical, electronic, midi, minimalism, phase music, pop, vaporwave" if that's any guidance to what it will sound like. Thanks :^)

I suspect you might actually like 100 Flowers more than the Urinals—it's cleaner and more post-punk. But if you feel so compelled, Negative Capability, the Urinals comp, is one of the great artifacts of L.A. punk.

Then I'm not really gonna like the Urinals am I? Check the score. I dunnoo, I'm not very fond of that style of post-punk, the songs don't amount to much, barely leave and impression and overall are very forgettable. Kinda reminds me of minutemen I guess.
I like darker stuff with more atmosphere I guess. Joy Division, Rowland S. Howard or Nick Cave.

Oh, that's a reasonble score for 100 Flowers. It's p forgettable.

Urinals are noticeably darker, or at least more sardonic in their humor, and generally noisier—they have a markedly more unique sound. If you do check them out, they're pretty quick: most every song is well under two minutes, and they only have 31

I always pinned you as a guy who likes cleaner and more professional recording though, and not so much a lo-fi punk kind of guy, so maybe don't bother (not trying reverse psychology, swear)

It made me feel emotions even though it really shouldn't have. The genre is super minimal glitch ambient, but it has really delicate control over atmosphere that is very unexpected. Even if you don't get that the sound design is very creative and engaging.

At work so I can't listen to the whole thing now. First track is nice, has a Philip Glass rhythmic thing (one, two, three, four...)

I know what you're taking about, I'd release more music more often, but then I'd be afraid it would mean even fewer people listened to my shit. You know this fear? That the frequency at which you release music is at an inverse relationship with how many people listen?

Review of Bark Psychosis - Scum (6/10)
Scum feels like a precursor to works like Choirs of the Eye in the way it transitions through different styles. Throughout its entirety it stays predominantly within the ambient end of the post-rock spectrum, but this certainly doesn't mean it refrains from heavier, noisier moments – these moments are achieved, not only through crescendo but through a thickening of the music's texture as more layers are introduced and things get gradually more chaotic. In the quieter moments, the most impressive feature is the subtle use of field recordings. Rather than sounding like they are pasted over the top of some instrumental recording, the samples are mixed into the production to result in the whole thing sounding like a recording of nature: the guitar, and drums especially (probably the best performance on this track) compliment the recordings so well that they sound less like humans are playing them and more like they are a part of the natural surroundings.

What doesn't work here as well as it could do is the structure of the piece. The way that the climaxes and moments of tension are arranged makes it come across to me as though there is no conclusive "journey" from beginning to end – rather, the music makes several stops along the way that transition cleanly into one another, but it never reaches its destination.

>>71203371
>the frequency at which you release music is at an inverse relationship with how many people listen
I've thought this for a while but never managed to articulate it in this way.

Anonymous 4 performing Hildegard von Bingen - 11,000 Virgins: Chants for the Feast of St. Ursula
>medieval classical music, choral

Something about this really isn't gelling with me. Hildegard's compositions are definitely gorgeous, but they're much less dense and spiritual than anything on Canticles of Ecstasty. The melodies are gorgeous, but they're often performed by a soloist, which makes them lose a lot of depth. I still like this, but it's definitely underwhelming, especially perfomance-wise.

2.5+

Chris Corsano - The Young Cricketer (2006)
>free improvisation

Apocalyptic stuff, goddamn. Corsano (and Paul Flaherty on the sax, I believe) creates so much with so little. The sparse sax playing is too skronky and irritatingly loud for my tastes, but Corsano's drumming brings the goddamn house down. Structureless and maybe substanceless, but this is essential if you're a drummer or if you like drums in any way just do see the sheer breadth of noises a good percussionist can make.

it's probably just that it slowly descends starting from a dominant and that the guy starts out forte but fizzles out super quickly, so it's already anticlimactic and when he tries to amp it up again the air's already out and it sounds directionless until the very end of the phrase. maybe it's intentionally & ironically going for this kinda weird contrast of trying to be anthemic and ending up kinda listless and depressive, maybe that makes sense with the lyrics from the verse idfk i just don't like it

Ennio Morricone - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
>Film Score, Spaghetti Western

Classic for a reason. The main theme is immediately what you think of when you hear “showdown” or “wild, wild west”. Those flutes. The little “wa-wa-waaa”. Man, it’s just awesome. It’s full of energy and bombast essentially all the way through. There’s chanting. Lots of trumpets. All that snazzy guitar work and some cool strings. A few epic (god that word has been ruined) tracks on here that make up for a few duds. Definitely eating spaghetti tonight.

3.5/5

Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
>Art Pop, Progressive Pop

Everything I’ve read about this album claims that Bush was in her teens when this was written and that alone is impressive. The whole thing has a romantic atmosphere, pairing lush instrumentation with Bush’s light, flouncy voice that just glides along on the record. It’s one of the god damn cutest voices I’ve heard and I usually try to avoid describing singing in those terms. It works exceptionally well on here, as she talks about love, pregnancy and all sorts of feminine issues. Not as consistent as the other works but there’s still some damn good songs on here. Oh and “Wuthering Heights” is one of the best pop songs I’ve heard. Already starting to grow on me honestly.

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Darklands
>Alt Rock

Like Psychocandy, this is a really intriguing intersection between pop, post-punk and alt-rock. However, this has a mellower, more comfy atmosphere but with the same cool shoegazey riffs and effects. That being said, it feels really hit or miss. The title track and last three cuts are all winners but the rest kind of ends up feeling samey. Cool atmosphere, just not as consistent as I’d hoped. I do think I like it more than their debut though.

3

Tim Buckley - Blue Afternoon
>Psychedelic Folk

All the reviews hyped this up a lot and the combination of Buckley and jazz seemed awesome but this doesn’t really do it for me. Probably the weakest record of his I’ve heard. I even went back to relisten a lot this week and it’s just so damn streaky. Basically every other track is a winner. There’s the amazing “Happy Time” followed by a dud in “Chase the Blues Away”. “I Must Have Been Blind” is followed by the meh “The River” and the lone one-two punch on here is ruined by a wandering closer. I wasn’t feeling it this week but I’ve found that Buckley tends to grow on me. Maybe I’ll like it more after some more listens.

Steve Roach - Structures from Silence

>Space Ambient

All three tracks here are astounding. They're emotional, they're relaxing, interesting, and just gorgeous overall. But, the title track drags it down a bit. The other two pieces are perfect and then some: they start out interesting, often changing itself, and slowly morph into something different but equally beautiful. It keeps those tracks interesting. The title track, on the other hand, consistently remains static for whatever reason. I don't know why Roach made it the most unchanging piece and then made it by far the longest track on the album. Still, it's a beautiful track, but a bit disappointing. If Roach dropped it entirely this would be an easy 5/5.

Much like Long Season, I don't have a problem sonically, just structurally.

How tf is 'production' even a positive, especially from someone from who enjoys lo-fi music. Like, I'm not even sure what you're referencing as enjoyment.

the beats, the instrumentals. "production" has a much different connotation in hip hop than any other genre.
>>
>>71211118
i want it to be from my wantlist. for consistency. i will get to that soon tho.

So everything that isn't the lyrics? lol
>>
>>71211118
>How tf is 'production' even a positive
lmao
back at it again huh?

yes because if you like a lo-fi production style on one particular album then it must mean you think it works in every scenario.

Obviously since he is talking about a hip-hop record he is using the term to talk about the quality of the beats produced on the record... as well as the actual style of production.
I don't understand how even you can possibly misconstrue that as something that can't be in the critical equation.

lasagna cat was a webseries back in 2008
the format of the series is hard to explain verbally
you'll get the jist from just watching a few of the vids
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0Lv8irN66U
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vubtGImJXqk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZ2q9NmYf6g
the project's last upload was on january 14th, 2008. by that i mean every video up on the channel prior to the reboot was uploaded on that one day.
the channel laid silent for 9 years.
out of nowhere, on the 9th of this month, this was uploaded to the channel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADM2WG1PsRs
this was then followed by this video on the same day, an ad a real call in line asking for people's full names and number of sexual partners they've had.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN7LQNDkobA
today, the channel uploaded 13 new videos, 12 new installments of the lasagnacat series, and a 5 hour video of the results of the sex survey. everybody who called in got a custom reply. note that the background footage slowly changes with the video. also note the ending.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgmoMO66uPg
one of these videos is a 1 hour uninterrupted video of John Barrymore III contemplating the philosophical aspects of the aforementioned strip.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAh9oLs67Cw
one of the videos features Justin Roiland singing In the Air Tonight.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_NeqMAAsBk
also there are several separate youtube channels and websites that correspond with the project in an arg like fashion, including both channels in this video. one of the videos on odie's channel was uploaded 4 years ago. the rest on both were posted today as well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3NLa4ebX4E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XS6MOep2wLs
it's too much to list out here. this will likely be dissected over the course of weeks, so this is all just very surface level shit at this point most likely.
i'm scared.

My spirit will be swallowed, and vomited out, and then swallowed once again. Forever.

My blood will remain.

I'm in hell. This is hell."
