someone that completely turns the industry on it's head and makes money despite giving his product for free and successfully cutting out the industry is somehow an industry plant? seriously? you clowns are something else. You have no proof or any reason at all to even assume he is a plant other than not liking him.

I know the point of these threads is mostly to troll but like with everything on /mu/ these days the lines are so blurred pathetic man children who want to fit in will parrot and push anything as gospel just to fit in... If you actually think he is a plant you are severely lacking in critical thinking skills

Acid Rap was well received here, but now just because his next big project was divisive he's suddenly a plant? what's the point of attacking an artists integrity just because you don't like his latest release? If you don't like Coloring Book then make threads with arguments as to why it isn't good.
>>
>>71184462
>someone that completely turns the industry on it's head

lol

>makes money despite giving his product for free

TIL royalties aren't a thing anymore

>You have no proof or any reason at all to even assume he is a plant other than not liking him.

he's getting radio play despite not being publicly signed or contracted to a major label. that's incredibly shady, because it simply doesn't happen. you HAVE to be working with a major to get radio play. period.

also, his sudden rise in the last 6 months is something to look at. i've never seen anyone go from being unknown to a superstar in less than a year, without the help of a major.
>>
>>71184498
post I was responding to already said everything that needs to be said, He has figured out how to turn his music into an extremely successful career while completely cutting out the industry and not relying on their outdated methods of making money.

wtf is an industry plant anyway. top producers work with top artists are paid by top labels and music services to round out the industry. most of what generates discussion here is totally irrelevant to 90% of music listeners, get comfortable with that.

i'm just being logical here. him getting radio play is incredibly shady and anyone in the industry can tell you that. you HAVE to be working with a major in some way.
>>
>>71184553
I don't think he's an industry plant, he just came from an affluent family and had access to better opportunities than most. I hope he proves me wrong in his career trajectory, but when I listened to acid rap I was just floored, he talked about real issues young adults face and matched it with great beats and a plethora of word play and literary techniques. I think coloring book is completely watered down chance, uninteresting lyrics that didn't stand out and he lost some of that young, ignorant, but wise charm that he became known for.
>>
>>71184739
he replaced his waaaaaaahhhh-ing with a slight more guttural whine and you think it's "watered down"? the nerve of some people

>x
>flavor of the month

X is the future. I think other hip-hop artists can learn a lot from the dude's variety, because the biggest problem in rap today is repetition. I don't mean in rhyme schemes, I mean in releases. Like, I have no problem with Future at all but have you heard his new album? It's the same formula over and over again on every song. The formula works once, maybe two or three times, but after that it's stale. I like how X fuses genres and only released snippets of song so they don't get stale fast and have replay value.

Is he over-hyped? Yeah. Do dudes circle jerk to him who have no idea about anything about music? Of course. But dude's good, and I think we need him to blow up rn to add some flavor to the industry.

So let's properly define the word Plant.

Plant = an artist who didn't reach a steady climb to fame and success, but rather a connection which allowed them to be placed within the top 40 artists already in rotation with a pseudo-hit song designed to make the masses think otherwise.
>>
>>71184425

>>
>>71190157
You can't just define the discussion. Industry Plants also applies to someone like Macklemore, who pretended to be indie while getting push from the industry (I think he was actually signed too?)

Or being signed and lying about it

Kendrick was signed way before he said he was
>>
>>71184430

still haven't listened to them, but a few years ago friends of mine were playing shows with them at local venues/basements and shit. not plant
>>
>>71184579

He got radio play because he put up a page on his website urging all of his fans to send his tracks to the radio station.

Refer to Macklemore for the other part. He's more of a "plant" or viral star than Chance.

Chance became famous because of his association as Kanye's new prodigy. If you have Kanye's support, anybody will work with you, including somebody like Lil Wayne who got fucked over by the industry.

Kanye heard Acid Rap, digged it, and pushed Chance to everybody and they enjoyed him.

That's pretty standard for most people that hit the mainstream.

He got suspended from high school, made a mixtape about it, and then realized he could rap for a living. It's a simple story and following him for years before he was famous made it believable.
>>
>>71184483
>>>/biz/
>>
>>71184722
Macklemore was independent, he had a number one hit. Actually I think he had two. And another one charted pretty high. He's not an industry plant, he's been doin shit for over a decade. So tell me how you HAVE to have a major label backing you?

>b-but that's an extremely rare occurrence!!

Then don't say you NEED labels backing you to get radio play when there's definitely exceptions.

Making him blow up to add 'flavor' to the industry is basically the equivalent of taking a fat piss into the industry.
>>
>>71186764

this desu
>>
>>71190447
Macklemore was signed and then left to become independent. He was underground for like ten years and then independently distributed Thrift Shop to radio stations after it started getting a buzz.

Kendrick has repped TDE since way before anyone had ever heard of him. It's also pretty public knowledge that Dr. Dre basically hunted him down to try to sign him after he heard the song "Ignorance is Bliss". His first release with Aftermath was with MAAD City.

i cannot stand bruno mars

all he does is copy artists and songs from the 80s, like sting, the time, prince, gap band, etc. people don't seem to notice or care because everything he copies is from a past era. there's nothing original about this guy. he's no different from a coverband that gets gigs at weddings, the only difference is that this guy has corporate backing and nepotism working in his favor

it really says a lot about the state of music, art and culture we're in, in which fucking bruno mars is the go to guy and recognized as our current innovator, where in the past it used to be the likes of james brown, mj, prince, bobby brown, fuck even justin timberlake is more original than this copycat fraud

He literally displayed as prince the other day so it's not like people aren't aware of the similarities. Obviously it's stupid to call him an innovator but he's a great pop songwriter in terms of giving the masses what they want. Look at his early songwriting credits that were big hits both for himself and other artists and they don't sound retro but just like what was popular circa 08/09. Not really nepotism either given he broke into pop industry the old fashioned way pretty much.
