The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Long and possibly sloppy review coming. Because man, this one was hefty.

[1/2]

Pelt - Ayahuasca
>Drone, Free Folk, American Primitivism

First off, this album is fucking massive by my standards. It’s about two and a half hours long despite only having 10 tracks. Typically, I wouldn’t really listen to something this long but most of this chart has been great.

I think I like drone more in concept than in execution. Because at about the hour mark, I ended up feeling a little bored. I’m not quite familiar with the genre, aside from about 3 or 4 albums and I’m never sure what I should do. Pay crucial attention because it’s so minimalist? Or zone out a little and let the atmosphere flow over me? I kind of ended up switching between the two approaches throughout the two hour listen and had to tackle this in chunks throughout the day.

Although it’s classified under drone, a genre prides itself in musical simplicity, this album is actually surprisingly diverse. Sure, there are a few 15+ minute tracks on here that wander on in drone fashion, with pretty much nothing but overwhelming distortion. Those were indeed interesting and different than I’m used to - but they weren’t quite my favorite. A few of the tracks, such as “True Vine” and “The Dream of Leaping Sharks” had this psychedelic, Eastern influence that was just fantastic. These tracks had a very similar feel to the Sequentia album in some ways - they were a weird blend that felt both uncomfortable and overwhelmingly spiritual/mystical.
>>
>>70857566
[2/2]

In addition, there were also a handful of tracks that touched on Primitivism. “The Cuckoo” is a nice country-ish sounding track that sounded like Perry Leopold. There’s lots of droning guitar feedback in the background, giving it an almost lo-fi feel, but the primary primitivist guitar isn’t too hard to hear. The closer, “Deep Sunny South” has a very similar feel but minus the droning. Pretty straightforward Fahey-ish stuff. The closer, “Raga Called John, Pt III” was kind of a middle ground, with the feedback remaining mostly unobtrusive in the background. Probably my favorite track because of that.

Overall, this was quite an interesting listen. It had a unique blend of drone, primitivism/folk and psychedelic influences that kept me entertained despite the length. Definitely one of the more original albums I’ve heard but I just wish it were shorter. The 20 minute tracks ensure that I won’t return very often and the hints toward Primitivism only frustrated me. I wish this had leaned more on the folk side honestly

I can see why you like this so much though Nat - it sounds like the combination of three/four albums from this cart. I feel guilty listening to something this long and not giving it at least a 4...

3/5
>>
>>70857566
>a nice country-ish sounding track
yeah it's an old Appalachian folk song, actually, which hillbilly music and eventually country music were derived from
>I feel guilty listening to something this long and not giving it at least a 4...
I think this is a common trap for reviewers actually. You see way too many compilations on rym that seem to be rated highly just because there's over a hundred tracks or whatever

Regardless, kind of bummed you didn't enjoy it that much. The drone on this album is some of the most intense and psychedelic anyway. The primitivism influences also help set it apart. Oh well
>>
>>70858034
Huh, the fact that that's an Appalachian folk song totally makes sense. Thanks for pointing that out.

Also yeah I'm kinda bummed myself. It's certainly an ambitious, unique album and I liked a lot of the ideas. I just don't like drone enough honestly.

Who knows, maybe I'll come back to it later and it'll grow on me.

>Transcore - Blackbird Raum - Destroying
vs.
>Natkingcole - Mickey Newbury - Looks Like Rain

One of "Destroying"'s songs starts with an air horn. Like, the meme air horn you put in FaZe Clan parody videos. However, "Looks Like Rain" works the Rainymood.com ambient sound effects in, which I could just have opened the website myself if I wanted it.

In terms of album art, Destroying presents us with a snowy landscape, a giant rabit and a composition that leans slightly to the right in direction. I think I would have preferred this artwork with the trees standing vertical, as opposed to leaning. Also a determined viking (or maybe other sort of ancient warrior?) marches onward. Band name & album title are both in the same font, which is a poor choice to have both title and subtitle being identical.

The album art of Looks Like Rain, on the other hand, a) has no rain to be seen, b) is literally just the dude's face and some arms. Mickey is wearing a natural-toned shirt and a wristband, with an expression of disapproving confusion. This look is something like what a Social Conservative would give when the rainbow-colored float of almost naked, bedazzled, hooting & hollering homosexuals goes by during a pride parade. The typeface chosen for this album art is nice. I like how it curves on top of Mickey's head like an abstract sort of hat.

With these things considered, this was a tough battle but I think Looks Like Rain ultimately edged it out. Mr. Nat is our winner!

Bulgarian Voices Angelete feat. Huun Hur Tu + bunch more people - Fly, Fly, My Sadness
It's great, of course it's great, not quite perfect, but it's great.
The first track is quite possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.
There's a lot to focus on here, I don't know if I have the ability to comment on all of it, but I'm going to damn well try, I listened to this thing multiple times to prepare, the review will still be shite though.
Throat singing is something I had to accustom myself to, it's not something you hear every day.
I have a couple of friends who are able to do it, they tell me that what is happening is that the throat and mouth are being manipulated in such a way as to produce multiple tones at the same time, which you can hear as resonance (the wubby thing I was talking about with The Well Tuned Piano). The resonances here are complex but inexpressibly beautiful. Sounds almost like a buddhist chant at times with all the different layers of vocals going on, it sounds almost as if you are staring into infinity.
Yat Kha, the Huun Hur Tu guy has quite the voice, that throat baritone is quite distinctive, I dig it, he does a mean Love Will Tear Us Apart https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_8CPhfTxyU
Second of all the instrumentation is bang on, I'm not sure what instruments they are using but they sound nice, the violiny thing especially.
My one and only criticism is that it drags in the second track.

from timmy sells his soul:
"The premise for the "hyperreal/supernormal" thing is a combination of some ideas I've picked up over the years about cases in which simulation can become more enjoyable than reality. Since this music project has always existed in the digital realm, I've been attempting to push the unreal aspect of it as far as I possibly can. There has been a bit of a tradition of this musically with artists like Oneohtrix Point Never, Vaporwave in general, A.G. Cook/PC music, Noah Creshevsky, etc. So I'm drawing on that and trying to put my own musical spin on it. I feel like I never quite get it to sound fake enough, but I try."

no Femi (or Seun) Kuti >:( Both are as good as Fela or Tony Allen imho
Femi Kuti - Africa for Africa (2010)
Seun Kuti And The Egypt 80 - From Africa With Fury: Rise (2014)

also these ones are good too:
Segun Okeji - Afro Super Feelings (1970)
Joe Mensah - Cry Laughter (1975) might be too funky/jazzy
Abayomy Afrobeat Orquestra - Abra Sua Cabeça (2016) from Brasil
Antibalas - Talkatif (2002)
Music is the Weapon - Moving Foundations and Outer Space (2012)

I was gonna add Joe Mensah but I'll be honest, I completely forgot. Abayomy is nice but not essential, same for Music is the Weapon imo. Talkatif is not as good as s/t IMO.

I have to admit, I haven't listened to Seun or Femi's work aside from a few tracks, so I didn't feel comfortable putting them in with my essentials.

Always loved Dio's singing when I was younger, and I'm glad I still do, a lot. His vocals, enough to carry an album by themselves are not the only attraction here because Blackmore also really gets to shine in the B-side of the record with some wonderful solos. I think the weaker part of this album are the shorter songs on the A-side, which have decent melodies with Dio's vocals on top, but still don't feel as thrilling or unique as the others in this record. Then again, Stargazer can probably overshadow a lot of songs. I guess some people might find the music kind of extravagant, but it's done in a very good way that makes this pretty epic [:^)].
3.5/4 (4 maybe?)
>Dogon A.D.
Cellos? In my free jazz? Anyway, the cello does a pretty good job keeping the groove on the title track, which is a very present element during the 14 minutes of it. Over it, the trumpet and alto sax improvise some nice things, with the track getting more interesting as it develops. The second track, more similar to 'regular' free jazz leaves any groove behind and has the players going in all directions, very hastily, but progressively slowing down. And the third and las track has Julius playing the flute and a more toned down sound at the start, and what I believed to be a guitar, but turned out to be the plucked cello. The track still has a pretty free feeling to it (though the players seem to be closer to eachother in this one and feel somewhat more structured), mixed with some softer, bluesy parts. Refreshing and original free jazz, something good in a genre that can get generic pretty easily.

Since Of Montreal used to be an E6 band, that would put the degrees of separation between Strong Bad and NMH at like 2 or maybe 3 *thinking emoji*:

Would rec seeing these guys live if you get the chance even though they haven't put out good music in years. Their shows are always batshit.

fully agreed (outside of the middle part. their thing from last year is fun from what i heard of it). two dancers came out in donald trump masks and cheap penis bodysuits. two demon cops then came out, handcuffed them, and started stripping their tops off.

>Little Kid - Logic Songs
Surprisingly beautiful instrumentation for a lo-fi Bandcamp album, complimented by some very nice and sparsely used recordings of trains.

However, the religious themes ring a bit hollow for me, and come across as slightly vapid. However, the whole "waiting for an answer" line hits me emotionally for reasons im not sure of.

>Spacemen 3 - Sound of Confusion
While pretty derivative of some dirty late 60's psych, Spacemen 3 gave me one hell of a trip, with a muddled mess of absolutely insane songs and covers.

>Stone Alliance is a newly formed group of three well-known American musicians dedicated to the creative force of music in many styles including Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Rock, and Pop

Stone Alliance's cover looks a lot like Heaven 17's Penthouse and Pavement: the overtly corporate cover of three men discussing deals with each other, holding drinks. While Heaven 17 actively tried to embody the sense of being a real corporation as part of the BEF, Stone Alliance try to dissociate by creating some of the most beautiful jazz out there.

The opener is this 6-minute-long jazzventure through the jungle, a romp to listen to. Entertaining through and through. It's worth mentioning that the Making Waves reissue makes the percussion sound extra crisp. It's like having the performers in the same room! It's probably my fav jazz fusion track now.

>Bedwetter - Flick your present and describe your teeth to your tongue

I appreciate how aleatoric this is, considering how its supposed to be a raw account of mental illness. It certainly has an organic feel to it, which is exactly what LUM wanted (i'm guessing). It's just a shame that the majority of the instrumental tracks just seemed to pad the more interesting rapped performances. Haze of Interference is incredibly effective. LUM usually hides his vocal inflections behind a facade of braggadocio or straightforward nihilism (note: I've never listen to third side of the tape). You can imagine my surprise when I hear hints of genuine fear and dread.

>Are you happy now, Travis?

>Aesop Rock - The Impossible Kid

Aes loses alot of his conceptual ambiguity in this one. It may seem like a negative to be purposely broad in your lyrics, but I for one really appreciated how vauge Aes's ideas were in earlier projects. In a way, such albums were very applicable and easy to contemplate on, despite it's dense wordplay. Also Blockhead's production was disappointing. See "Float".

>Wooden Veil - s/t

I can't help but shake the feeling that this group is terrified of writing a decent song. The drone pieces were wonderfully done, but all of the folk tracks are disastrously ineffective. Still, the album puts on a fantastic atmosphere throughout.

>Basic Channel - Quadrant Dub

I don't really understand this as much as a I probably should. I like Regis i'm sorry.

>Jim O'Rourke - Halfway To A Threeway

Sanguine misanthropy. Well done as usual.

>Doronco Gumo - Old Punks

I already did a lengthy write-up on this. Listless psych rock with charm.

>Surgeon - This Is For You Shits

Surgeon masterfully interweaves complex IDM tracks into a pulsating and rudimentary pulse that feels unmistakably techno. Fuck me was that Whitehouse track well played.

I'm kind of burnt out on writing, but I will say that IV was pretty bad.

I mean it had a nice sound going for it, but for a (mostly) instrumental Jazz album, there is almost nothing there in terms of interesting songwriting.

The Mick Jenkins track is nice. They should stick to hip hop instrumentals.

Travis Scott - Days Before Rodeo (2014)
>southern hip hop, trap rap

I really do like this quite a bit more than I thought I would. I'm not entirely sold on Scott as a rapper He's got charisma and a decent flow but he doesn't bring anything new to the table, and he tends to repeat himself stylistically track after track. Some songs also definitely feel like duds, the beats occasionally really irritate rather than bang and some of them go on for far too long. Barring some outlier tracks, the production is definitely this album's greatest characteristic, and it's some of the best trap production I've heard. It's definitely not very typical trap, it's a much darker, more experimental take on it and it works really well. It's unsettling but it's still very hard-hitting and banging, and it makes for a decently enjoyable mixtape marred by some bad tracks, a somewhat average rapper, and some garish features (save for Thugga).

2.5

John Coltrane - Coltrane Live at Birdland (1964)
>post-bop

This is the shit, basically. I've heard less bop-era Coltrane than I'd care to admit, but there's no way that you could convince me this isn't the culmination of Coltrane's take on post-bop and just the style as a whole. It's technically immaculate, there's not a sour note on this thing, and the band is in perfect sync. The eleven-minute rendition of "Afro Blue", a track I already love as performed by the great Abbey Lincoln, is a wonderful look forward at Coltrane's more avant-garde stylings that still retains the upbeat and tight nature of post-bop, and "Alabama" is one of Coltrane's most melancholy, politically-charged pieces, and it's fucking gorgeous. The other three tracks are still wonderful, maybe a bit less memorable than the two landmarks on the album, but everything about them is still really great. The melodies, the performances (Elvin Jones is at his best here), their structures, all of them make for a perfect summation of Coltrane's bop years.

Perfect summary of why I love that album so much. The band is so tight and it's like a perfect blend of Trane's more traditional stuff and his experimental tendencies.

Glad you at least dug the Travis Scott, I assumed that was gonna be the 0.5 of the chart.

Quick review bump.

Lee Dorsey - Yes We Can

Pretty solid, enjoyable soul/funk. Definitely leans toward soul, with slower, mellower tracks all over this. It definitely has a Southern, New Orleans feel, which honestly reminded me of Johnny Rivers. Though it’s fairly standard as far as soul goes, there were definitely some standouts.

“Yes We Can” (both parts) have a nice bass heavy groove and an irresistibly happy charm. The album’s last three cuts, “Occapella”, “Gator Tail” and “Would You” are all super entertaining as well. “Occapella” is exactly what I pictured when I saw the southern R&B label. There’s a great mix of tambourines, horns, bouncy basslines and simple verses. “Gator Tail” is much faster, with an almost rawer sound and this rapid-fire, almost guitar riff. It’s pretty danceable, which makes it possibly the best song on here. The real closer, “Would You” is a lighthearted comedy based bit, with a lot of back and forth between Dorsey and the audience. It’s not necessarily a great track but it’s funny in a corny, 70’s kind of way.

Solid album, I just wish it were more consistent. The middle tracks are alright but the standouts really made me think he could make something better. Enjoyable nonetheless.

Terminus's Recs:
Swordfishtrombones leaves a strong first impression. I wasn't familiar with Waits up to this point, but I didn't expect the album to be so theatric. This is dark cabaret at its most simple form. Through the filter of other genres, Waits spins a series of spooky tales screeched through guteral breaths.
The next album continues with the grand theatrics, though Gleaming Canyon is focused more on raw, burning emotion. The vocals are excelent, but outside of that, there sadly isn't much of note. Fairly standard contemporary folk
I won't say much about Sings as I will likely be tiping up a review of it soon, but this is possibly the best use of contrast between halves of an album I've ever heard. Simply put, this is more likely than not a new 10 for me. God damn.
The theme out outstanding vocal preformance continues into Fly, Fly My Sadness, yet another record I have no authority to review. Can't say I'm to familiar with tuvan throat singing, but the assembly didn't dissapoint.
Shahbazz didn't connect with me as much as a lot of similar records have. Its sparce nature doesn't contribute to much, and the only preformance of real note is the lead (though she is really great). I would like to see more from her in another setting.
A Tabua de Esmeralda acts as more proof that Brazil has and always will have the best pop music. More produced than what I've heard from him prior, leading to a technically "brighter" album, that lacks a bit of the soul that Forca Bruta showcased. That's a minor complaint though, as Jorge would be able to carry any project with his voice and guitar alone.
All in all, this was a solid assembly of strong vocal preformances, each representing a different part of the world. I'm glad this mix was so good, making me wait a month for these recs goddamnit.

final results in a few minutes.

Waylon Jennings - Honky Tonk Heroes (1973)
>outlaw country

Pretty cool country. I love the more upbeat, rocking tracks, because Jennings' voice fits perfectly with them, he's got so much swagger. The title track in particular is wonderful, especially when it just explodes with that overdriven bluesy riff, it's awesome. The ballads, on the other hand, are very hokey. Jennings' natural talents definitely aren't predisposed to slower songs, so while the ballads might be okay, they come off as overdone. Still a pretty solid album.

No clue if it's better to post this here or in a separate thread but this is probably my favorite record of 2017 yet:

>BRUTUS-Burst
>post-rock/metal , harcore/punk

Self-described 'stratospheric' punk, Burst is the debut by power trio BRUTUS. Strong, battering drums, high-pitched guitars, a droning bass and raw female vocals make for a special blend of high energy music.

Atmospheric tracks: Bird, Child
Energetic tracks:All Along, Not Caring, Crack/Waste, Horde II
Singalong tracks:All Along, Horde II, Baby Seal
Best tracks:All Along, Justice De Julia II, Horde II, Crack/Waste

Can still be streamed on http://3voor12.vpro.nl/luisterpaal/albums/Brutus.html

Replying to myself once again, the easiest way to discover their shit is just to use spotify since it's all over the place on bandcamp. They've done a demo (which can't be found on the net, don't own it either ='(), 3 7" inches and a split with The Guru Guru that can be found on spotify under the name brutuguru where they cover each other and Sinnead O' Connor together. There's one more youtube only track called Bear Claws. They're pretty good live, saw 'em this saturday. Had to wait a year and a half to see them, but it was worth the wait.

I agree, I think it's hos most fully realized and compelling work yet.
A lot of the songs on the record are based on what he's been experiencing and feeling in the past year, I think it really comes across.

Also he's been playing this new piece where he plays his lap guitar like a sarod. Literally sounds like an Ali Akbar Khan composition, he's been studying those raga progressions.

>I agree, I think it's hos most fully realized and compelling work yet.
I've only listened to The River, but I do prefer this. I guess the drone parts tie it together, but I'm not too sure on them. Like I agree on the idea of including the drone and it works, but I find the drones themselves less well executed than the rest of the album.

>Also he's been playing this new piece where he plays his lap guitar like a sarod. Literally sounds like an Ali Akbar Khan composition, he's been studying those raga progressions.
That sounds really cool, I could see how that could serve in the same way as the drone does on this album, but maybe more fittingly

This album is not good at all.
1. It's okay to have a lot of variance in style on an album, if it is executed well and makes cohesive sense. This does not. Instead, it comes across like the musicians are trying (and failing) to be eclectic.
2. The vocals, whether singing or growling, sound bored as hell.
3. """"""""metal"""""""" ... Liturgy is more black metal than this

I don't like it.

>>70881326

>>
>>70882695
Listen to it again; Goma Gringa got a good remaster of it and it sounds wonderful, like it was recorded in a cave or something. It's not exactly """"""crisp"""""" and """""""clear"""""" but the material recorded transcends the quality of the recording.
>>
>>70882695
to my ears filosofem has two styles: the atmospheric black metal and the ambient. The ambient track, the 25 minute one I forget the name of, isn't needed on the album in my opinion, I think it is a waste of time. The Mantle mixes different styles of folk rock and post-rock styles (i.e. pseudo-crescendocore, attempted growling with folk rock style) and it just sounds like a mess. Just my opinion though.
>>
>>70881326
Listened to Trane, Jandek, NIN and now listening to Ichiko Aoba.
Just had work and went shopping for booze and nice wine glasses. They make a *clink* sound.

>>70882695

>>70882884
Cool, do they also whistle when rotating your finger on the top edge?
>>
>>70882951
I'll make sure to find out once I'm drunk ;)
>>
>>70882749
might not be the best comparison but i just dont get it. if you look at how many different elements each song is made up of rather than the apparent inspiration behind those it's rather monotonous, whether you look at the structure or the arrangement. even if i do that to me it's just di6 with some electric guitars that dont sound like anything in particular. using a lute (i think) on the last two tracks is as eclectic as it ever gets
>>
>>70882972
Nice post review
>>
>>70880115
yeah I'm listening to this right now and it's very good

props rod
>>
>>70882323
I agree it's not good (I really liked it at a time) but some of your complaints are stupid.

Eclectic how? Every song is just slow acoustic metal?? If you think Agalloch has variation in style you should probably listen to more to the genre or just listen to the album again. Probably one of the least eclectic album released in 2002 honestly. Literally every metal album from the top 20 released in the 00s were more eclectic (save Jane Doe and Dopethrone maybe). Interested to hear what an "eclectic album that works" is in your opinion. Not because I think you don't know, but because I disagree The Mantle is eclectic to any extent.

I do agree the vocals are my least favorite part about this band and honestly with more involved vocals I'd probably give them at least a .5 higher on both albums I've heard from them.

And what exactly makes it not metal? The fact that they use an acoustic guitar instead of an Ibanez Jem played through a metal zone? Fuck outta here with that logic. I don't even see what wouldn't make it Black Metal.

>>

>>
>>70884541
yeah Ott's quite up his own ass but at least he has actual convictions and unique opinions (although some of them are bad)
>>
>>70884721
yeah I mean with anybody that's a bit conceited who talks that much about himself there's always gonna be that effect, but I think it's really satisfying when I have pretty much 100% the same opinion as him that;s reciprocated in one of his videos. Maybe because I'm conceited or want confirmation myself, but I think more so that it's because he puts things I feel into better words than I can. For example his Mercury Rev opinions are completely congruent with mine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXIqxF9JmVU&feature=youtu.be&t=13m43s

I think they sucked major shit and were no longer the same band pretty much every album Deserter's Songs and after, and the fact that they were legitimized by critics after Deserter's Songs by pretty much becoming a shittier Flaming Lips is pretty sad.

Would also rec TND podcast's interview with him if you wanna hear him at his worst. I think it's funny when the dude makes super overt and negative generalizations about bands Fantano really likes like Godspeed or No Age, but his statements about Internet-Music culture are pretty interesting at least.
