I read that record companies started wanting to get a cut of revenue rather than just giving MTV videos for free in order to get promotion, and MTV had to make more of their own content in order to make money. That is in addition to the internet becoming a thing and killing TV's cultural monopoly

They stopped showing music and or doing anything with music and replaced all the music with garbage reality tv shows.
Now reality tv is sort of dying, and anyways, literally every other channel does reality tv too.
So mtv no longer has music or reality tv, they have no brand.
They are a zombie, a joke, to my generation, something from the past, to the next generation something completely non existent.
The 1% of time they do have music is garbage top 40 pop or rap.
Literally just that, no metal, no punk, no rock, not even edm, and that shit has been huge for like the last 5 years.
No one watches thier award shows anymore, they just wait till the next day if any highlights are uploaded to the internet.
Oh, let me guess, kanye is going to say something le totally wacky xDDD and beyonce is going to perform for the 8th year in a row....

I know in terms of scripted Teen Wolf and The Shannara Chronicles do well for teen cable shows (nothing groundbreaking but 1 to 2 million is decent for that category). Note that I've never actually watched these shows and they're probably trash but I occasionally keep up with ratings and I don't think MTV is gonna die out.

The State I'm iffy on. I think it's praised a lot in retrospect just because of their followup careers. What are you basing any of this on? Their ratings are fine compared to the vast majority of cable channels. You're right that people are leaving cable but Viacom has huge stakes in Hulu so cordcutters aren't hurting anything, and MTV is the teen branch of the company. They will pivot like crazy if they need to but they're not going to get rid of a brand that large. That's not how shit works dude. Even if it was truly failing as much as you're saying (it's not) they'd rebrand to streaming originals or online programming before dropping it.

I'll concede that I didn't realize they had bad Q4 last year, last I checked up on them they had an up quarter. It's still the flagship brand of a billion dollar company though, even the articles you posted reference that, like I said they'll pivot like shit before they let MTV die (half of those articles are before their Hulu expansion) and the company is certainly not on death's door. my only exposure to MTV over the last few years has been in my university's weight room. They just let whatever's on the channel run on all three tvs throughout the entire day.

Heres what I've seen of the channel over the course of being in college:

>shitty pop/rap with an occasional good song, they played fucking Car Radio all the damn time when it came out. It was the whiniest, least attractive song i had heard played in a public place.
