The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

So basically throughout the past year or two I've been really expanding my music taste, and I feel I've done a good job of doing that. What ends up happening is I find one thing I REALLY REALLY like and listen to it almost exclusively until the next big thing comes into the forefront of my attention.

The last album I heard that had that effect on me was Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but that was almost 4 months ago now. I still love it to death, but idk. It doesn't have the spark any more.

Does anyone else go through those kinds of phases?

When I was really new to actual music yeah but its been years since that, what I found that works best when you start of is choosing a genre you really like but are not familiar with and trying to go through it /mu/'s genre charts are fun if you look at it like a challenge and go through it album by album by album. by the end you have a shit load of new music and a pretty good hang of what sounds good and what doesn’t and it kinda just makes you want to never stop, also you can do this to a lot of genres so its a pretty long journey ahead of you

Spooky - Bitchcraft
>Neo-psychedelia, Pop, Hip-hop, Plunderphonics

My friend showed this rando band camp band to me last night at a party, and I kind of flipped out over how good the opener was, so I definitely had to check this out while sober. And it’s not quite so mind-blowing, but it’s something…

And that something is basically Animal Collective fanboyism, faithfully replicating Panda Bear’s sample-based psychedelia, combined lightly with white boy hip hop beat production. However amateurish, it actually produces some really enjoyable tunes. Look no further than the opener, “Hey My Brotha”, which flickering vocal harmonies, simple soaring string samples, and basic hip hop beat—or the chill “Nothin’ but Net” with a heavenly chorus—or the closer “Bilbo’s Oboe”, with its childish sing-song rhythms and pretty clavier-sounding samples. The rhythms have a bit of a spastic flail to them, further drawing comparison to AnCo, though more Strawberry Jam-era than Person Pitch-style.

Pretty decent bandcamp find, honestly. Too bad it seems like a one-off project from 2011, so there’s not much hope for the artist making more of this kind of thing and perhaps coming into their own a bit.

Anyone who likes latter day AnCo might want to give this a listen:

Tom Johnson - An Hour For Piano (1974)
>Minimalism

It's only 55 minutes.

2.0 10

Great solo piano minimalism piece with great pacing and mathematical developments. Sounds almost folk-esque in the way the repeating bass notes coincides with the alternating patterns of melody, similar to traditional fingerpicking. The entire piece is in the key of G, though the motives frequently hover between C and D creating an unresolved, dissonant feeling landscape. The entire piece, including the ‘bass’ notes are in the upper register, giving it a shiny, glittery sound. The piece relies heavily on repetition, as is characteristic of minimalism, but remains interesting through slow, dancing developments and style changes without ever moving away from the core idea of the piece.

Fans of minimalism will find plenty to enjoy about this release.

The japanese are quite good at noisy psych innit. I prefer LRD's more melodic style but it's hard to argue with the sheer heaviness of this record. 3.5/5 good jams

>Jean-Claude Vannier - L'Enfants Asssassin des Mouches
Weird album. Has some cool ideas with the almost industrial musique concrete, orchestral and choral stuff it almost sounds like a funky movie soundtrack but some parts just sound goofy and a bit shite (e.g. the carnival). Nice record overall though. 3/5

pleasantly inoffensive though ultimately just decent. you have a good voice and the first track is the best here because of it. the second track is just kind of a chore to sit through even if it sounds nice. last track was ballsy but lacked substance and could have been two or three shorter songs along the lines of the first track. seriously, if you had made a bunch of songs like the first one it could have been seriously good.

Joy Division - Closer
A very complete and satisfying experience. A bit too diverse than "Unknown Pleasures", but nothing too experimental. Even Ian Curtis'excessively changeless voice seems to be shifting to warmer sides of melancholy from time to time. A more global and less hopeless piece. Managing to keep the general attitude of the band, it doesn't quite narrow the listener's experience to this sole direction, being more open to interpretation.

Huerco S. - Colonial Patterns
For me this album is about a creative misuse of the genre features. Ambient textures transformed into repetitive beats are put into use the way the dub techno would be, while dub techno covertly pulsing in the background - the way ambient would. A relatively good combination of DIY and good quality sound.
I consider it a wider experience than "For Those Of You Who Have Never", and it's definitely a more defining album for outsider house as a genre. However, while it delivers the aesthetics in a remarkably thorough way, it seems to be lacking the general concept, I can't really see any statement behind it, but I guess it can be attributed to the specifics of the genre.

Minor Threat - Minor Threat
I understand that being a short burst is kind of a concept of punk as a genre, but this is a little bit way too abrupt, I barely memorized some of the songs even on several relistens. I feel like only "I Don't Want To Hear It", "Screaming At The Wall" and s/t track managed to be the complete short explosion this piece intended to be.
Guitars - good, but nothing original or outstanding. Drums - amazing, should have been used more noticeably. Vocals - actually great, not complaining about them.

Mick Jenkins - The Water[s] (2014)
>conscious hip hop

Pretty damn good. Some low points, mainly with the features and how one-note the sound generally is, but the beats are great, and appropriately aquatic, and Jenkins is a great MC and a wonderful lyricist. I shouldn't have put this off for as long as I did.

3.0

Joan Baez - Joan Baez (1960)
>contemporary folk

You'd think I'd love this but I'm not feeling it at all. Baez is a nice vocalist and a great, melodic fingerpicker, but she does so little to make this folk revival sound her own, and the original songs are forgettable while the traditional songs are just less interesting version of songs already recorded a dozen times. Worth a listen, but I'm not too into it.

2.0+

I'm getting a little ahead of myself for the second time this week if only because I anticipate me having no time to do anything but schoolwork. Anyway, on to the daily blurb:

A thoroughly enjoyable listen, one of the musical high points of my month. It's hard to say what makes the album great without listing every instrument on the album. "Little B's Poem" is a song that fills me with such incandescent joy, with vocalist Jean Carn's voice propelling the song past the tempo markings. The song immediately following "Little B", "Moonchild", is a moody jazz instrumental; horns and drums and keyboard combining forces into a mishmash of sexy 'scapes. The title track is a slice of jazz that exudes a blue ambiance, post-bop cool spiritual jazz with haunting vocals courtesy of the unequaled Jean Carn.

The album, on paper, is yet another West Coast bullshit jagoff masturbatory piece of obtuse jazz, but in practice becomes something more than that. It's a totally cathartic listen that rewards the listener again and again.
4.5/5

The beats on that tape are some of my favorites, they're terrific. Love that style of production, it fits the theme so well. The subject matter gets a bit corny but that's the only real complaint I have.

Rich Woodson’s Ellipsis - Control and Resistance
>Avant-prog, Rock in Opposition, Jazz Fusion

This album is somewhat of a legend, or a meme—pick your poison—among the rym elites, but frankly falls into a lot of qualifying tropes of avant-prog: dynamic performances, aimless group improvisations, effectively-jazz-with-electric-guitars, the works.

As cool-sounding as they were, I couldn’t tell you a unique thing about the first eight tracks. The closer, though, and longest song, dutifully living up to the “last song is the longest song is the best song” meme, is simply spectacular. The performers get a lot more room to breath here, and as a result, churn out memorable passages again and again.

Definitely will be returning to listen to this another time though.

I just got an internship at a record label, and after a week I'm already feeling incredibly insecure about my relatively minimal music knowledge. Should I stick with it and try to learn as much as I can or give up and keep music listening to myself as a hobby?

Rather not say, but they were a pioneering force of east coast noise rock, hardcore, and shoegaze in the mid to late 80s and now just rerelease stuff from that era. Nobody there cares about contemporary music, which I'm big on, so I'm not sure if it's the best fit

Absolutely beautiful folk. The way these tracks progress is outstanding, and Basho's voice reminds me a bit of Tim Buckley's (which is a very good thing). The variation on this record kept me interested for the entire run time. A few weak moments but overall damn good. 8/10

>Fare Forward Voyagers (Soldier's Choice)
As my introduction to Fahey, this album showed me why he is so influential in this genre. His sound is very captivating but also technically impressive. The first track was my favorite, but they were all very pleasing. Might grow on me in the future. 7/10

This is a great concept for a solo Junko record. Half of it is Hijokaidan jams, the other one is solo vocal performance and it all lasts 20ish minutes.

Unfortunately I found the solo performance much tamer than what we had on THE VOID. Glitches were fun, but her voice doesn't sound as over the top as it is supposed to imo. That's pretty much why I go to solo Junko releases.

Worth a listen if you're a Hijokaidan fan. The artwork is amazing too.

This, on the other hand, is absolutely brilliant. Took a while and Inu almost fought me over, but the absolutely gorgeous arrangements on this one make Tomokawa shine like nothing I've heard before. Holy fucking shit dude. The title track reaches Mikami levels of expression. It was always there, but the contrast with the child choir blew me the fuck out. Throw in some highly sensitive shakuhachi playing and you get a hell of a closer.

Not throwing 10s out just yet, but I'm somewhat tempted.

James Brown - Hot Pants

Like the other albums I’ve heard from Brown, this is filled with long-winded, groove based tracks. They feel cyclical, with really repetitive basslines and drum breaks. The band occasionally strays from this repetition with great little solos and such. And Brown himself compliments the band with little outbursts, yelps and all his trademark vocal additions. I love that this is more improvisational than most of the funk I’ve heard - it give it a much more organic and original feel.

On here, there’s a decent mix between styles. “Blues & Pants” is slow-building and almost brooding despite the funk feel. It almost sounds like an Americanized Fela Kuti, with a very similar chaotic, groovy vibe. And “Can’t Stand It” is much more upbeat track with a lot more bass and horn solos. “Escapism” is a two part jam that blends into this hectic, energetic groove, with screeching saxes, lots of breakdowns and Brown just yelping all over the place. I immediately recognized the little sax section from Public Enemy - and I found that it’s definitely one of the most sampled songs in hip-hop. WhoSamped claims it’s been sampled in 137 different songs. I knew James Brown had a big impact on the genre but that’s just absurd. The 9 minute title track is in the same category - with 190 listed. It’s understandable - there’s some killer guitar work, nice horns and all the good shit that you’d expect from Brown.

Anyway, this isn’t quite as consistent or impactful as The Payback in my mind but it’s still really damn entertaining.
