hi

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Fantasias For Guitar and Banjo
Blend, the 20 minute opening track, was great. The rest was good, but forgettable. The drums added a nice flavor to this album, something I am not used to in American primitivism. 7/10.

>This Is the Wind That Blows It Out: Solos for 6 & 12 String Guitar
Oh yes, family. I don't know what about this I loved so much, but I want more. Was it the guitar tone that made this so great? I have no idea. This might grow on me even more. 8/10

How is it? I've wanted to watch it for a while but it seems like such a time commitment.

Been grooving to Radiohead a lot this week but I'm about to check out the Herbie Hancock album from my chart. TV wise I've been binging Community.

Gonna be weird listening to their music in that order. What do you think so far?

>>70789708
I agree, that Glenn Jones album is great. I think it's the album's slow pace compared to most primitivism that makes it great. That's just me though.

Herbie Hancock - Fat Albert Rotunda

On one hand, this is a groovy funk album. It’s basically everything you’d want out of a 70’s fusion album. On the other hand, it feels shockingly mediocre by Hancock’s standards. It’s catchy and entertaining but something about this feels so commercial compared to Head Hunters and Thrust. It’s missing the magic of those two, that’s for sure.

“Wiggle Waggle” starts the album off great. It’s irresistibly catchy - with that righteous bass line and some bombastic horns. Everything's a bit over the top. Both Hancock and (especially) Joe Henderson really rip it up on here, with terrific funk solos. It’s definitely the big standout on here.

The rest of the album is a bit hit or miss though. “Fat Mama” is about as average as it gets, with a couple of nice little trumpet riffs, Hancock meandering around on the piano for most of the track and the rest of the musicians kind of jumping in whenever. Both “Tell Me a Bedtime Story” and “Jessica” are kind of modal sounding pieces that feel like they should belong on Maiden Voyage - only they’re electric. I’m not quite sure if I like this awkward middle ground here, honestly. I feel like with these, Hancock was kind of working his way up to the Thrust/Head Hunters sound. Some of the tracks really pop and there’s great moments on these but it isn’t quite as consistent.

Basically, I don’t think Hancock plays to his strengths on here. His best work is when he really cracks down and focuses on his compositional skills. Here he just kind of jams out - which is cool, don’t get me wrong - but the songs don’t feel as tight. Head Hunters feels meticulously crafted at its core and as a result, feels way tighter when the musicians branch out into their solos. Here, it feels like Hancock had a very general idea of what he was gonna do, shot the shit with some of his friends and made a funk-jazz album.

Enjoyable but not quite his best either.

Boo Williams - Home Town Chicago LP (1996)
>chicago house

"Home Town Chicago" and "Lazy Mood", the tracks that start off both LPs on this incredibly short double album, are certified house classics. They take a pretty idiosyncratic approach to house, the drums are very frenetic and skittering, and the synth lines aren't melodic at all, they exist more to add texture to the drum lines more than anything else, and they accomplish these tasks incredibly well. None of the other tracks here are quite as good, but this record is remarkably consistent, save for some unmemorable tracks on the second LP. Worth a listen if you're into house at all.

3.0-

Weakling - Dead as Dreams (2000)
>black metal

Who knew that some dudes from San Francisco can make a black metal album as dismal, oppressive, and heavy as some of the best stuff from Scandinavia? No track on this album runs for less than ten minutes, the longest exceeding twenty, and this track is one of the best metal tracks I've heard. Every second of its runtime contributes an insane amount to making the heaviest, most dismal, most enveloping, most atmospheric metal song of all time, and it never gets old or boring throughout it's entire twenty minutes. Some of the other tracks, on the other hand, don't feel like they deserve to have such long runtimes. Every track has at least one aspect I love, but some go on for much longer than necessary, and some focus more on dark as night ambient soundscaping, which they don't do incredibly well. I've got some criticisms, but this is great.

I've read a few chapters from The man who mistook his wife for a hat, which arrived a couple of days ago, and it's really good. The cases Sacks describe are really interesting, particularly for a psychology student like me since I recognise it all from my textbooks. The language is simple and accessible for anyone, which makes it easy to read along even though the subject matter can be pretty complicated.

Really good so far, would recommend.

start out with Eccojams. that's crucial.
That Macintosh Plus album is pretty good so it wouldn't hurt to give that a listen.
some other good ones:
Disconsciousn - Hologram Plaza
AQUATIC AIRLINES 1 - AQUATIC AIRLINES 魚の平面
押͢花̎ƒl᷊o͚w̯e̟r̘s͘ - f̗l̗e̗s̗h̗-̗p̗e̗r̗c̗e̗n̗t̗a̗g̗e̗-[%].mov
Sheriff Mario RPG - Proto Wario
Infinity Frequencies - Computer Decay
仮想夢プラザ - 一つとして
Hantasi - Vacant Places
懐かし2002津波 - commercial breaks
chris††† - No Lives Matter

also some general labels worth looking through:
DMT Tapes/Verbatim Consciousness Recordings (an excessive amount of releases and a lot of them are sub par, but it contains a great amount of gems within itself.)
Tetra Systems (kinda gimmicky, but p good.)
Sea of Clouds (fairly recently opened ambient vapor label, all releases so far have been at least decent, points for amazing packaging.)
Online Records (not vaporwave, but contains a lot of people from or formerly from the scene. focuses around "netband," an improvised, one take, often collective form of production done exclusively over the internet in things like discord and audacity.)

>Toho Sara – Hourouurin
>free jazz

A fuckin' primal shamanistic journey into free improvisation feature traditional jazz and Japanese folk instruments. Most of the tracks start with this calm and rhythmic folk music that thick with mysticism that eventually goes abrasive with shrill violin and feverish drum pounding that is wild and turbulent, similar to that of a spiritual crises. The album is a bit complex and long-winded, so you would really have to sit down with this one and pay attention. Recommend for meditation.

Holy fuck boys I finished a chart, screenshot this shit.

Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup - Mean Ol' Frisco: Charly Blues Masterworks

Great streetcorner blues with a nice rhythm section and a phenomenal booming voice.
The guitar work is practically the same for every song, and his limited repertoire of riffs means that a few songs in, you've practically heard the whole set. The songs individually are quite good, but there's hardly enough material to justify a whole album here.
Should probably be a 6.5 as an album but I'm definitely tossing a few of these bad boys on the cottage 2017 playlist, so...

Terribad reviews inbound

Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius
It was enjoyable, bass was great but sounded a little artificial (kinda like a 16 bit soundtrack, which clashed with the other instrumentation a bit.
Portrait of Tracy was the best song, appreciated the shit out of the flute solo and the crazy piano solo somewhere towards the back end

The Cramps - Off the Bone
Great, unsure if most of the songs were covers or if they were originals, Surfin Bird is underrated, some of the songs outstay their welcome but you don't really notice it until somebody walks in the room and starts to listen with you, even still you can party to it

Jackie O Motherfucker - Flags of the Sacred Harp

His production style is a huge influence on the Houston scene. UGK, Z-Ro, Big Moe... pretty much any big name from the area draws influence from him. Listen to early UGK and then check out some of Ridin Dirty and you'll see how big of any impact Screw/SUC had. He's also the basis for Chopped and Screwed production, which has kind of made a comeback recently.

Also, his music is pretty mellow and psychedelic in a way hip-hop usually isn't which is cool.

so i'm not done with this and i've got time to listen to something else but not enough time to listen to the 90 minute album left on here so i'm just gonna start with woolite right now

Annette Krebs / Taku Unami - Motubachii (2010)
>EAI

Minimalistic EAI taken to its logical conclusion. Rustling papers, incredibly quiet drones (I normally listen to music with my music player volume barely inched up and my system volume halfed, I had to turn it up way higher than normal for this), voices, strings, and some occasional loud door slamming make up the entirety of this album, and I'm not sure I really like it all too much. I appreciate it, and Krebs and Unami are able to do a fair amount sonically with little actual instrumentation, but this is purely a sound experiment and nothing else. It's a decent experiment, but it would be better if there was a better understanding of dynamics and less of a reliance on shock noises like the door slamming to keep the listener engaged and to add anything else to the album besides the bare minimum of sound. Interesting, but there's definitely better EAI out there.

I mean, that stuff only comprises roughly 30 minutes of the album but uh yeah. The album has a lot of ideas in it. I think it is a giant, unfocused turd but if you don't like 60 of the minutes, you may very enjoy 10 of the minutes and be totally indifferent to the other 20.

Definitely a perfect "Backlog's last gasp" album, though.

Spitta Andretti & Harry Fraud - Cigarette Boats (2012)
>southern hip hop

The production is great, perfectly hazy while still having a sound very reminiscent of a lot of '90s hip hop. Curren$y's performance, on the other hand, is really lazy, which sucks because I normally really like Curren$y on the mic. He always has a very stoned, lethargic sound, but he amps that up to the point of sheer boredom here. They don't even compliment the similarly hazy beats, they just drag them down and really hurt the EP as a whole. Fraud is awesome, but his production talents are masked by the lazy rapping here.

2.5

Chico Buarque - Chico Buarque de Hollanda (1966)
>samba, MPB, singer/songwriter

Supremely chill and pleasant MPB. Some songs are too short to really make an impression, but Buarque knows his way aroud a melody like no other songwriter does, and his voice is one of the best in MPB. He balances the chill and the epic very well too, a few songs build up into crescendoes that perfectly compliment the slower, more delicate intros. The songs that don't do this suffer a bit, but a very good album nonetheless.

Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country (2000)
>IDM

Nope, I can't get into BoC for the life of me. Twoism is a really great EP, because every track seems like it has a purpose, and every track has some sort of progression that makes them worthwhile listens. This EP just seems lazy, they introduce a nice idea at the beginning of every track and just keep repeating that EP until it loses every single last bit of it's luster. The title track's vocal samples are awesome, and "Zoetrope" is really pretty, but they get old by the time they're over. Not a fan.

Totally get the critiques of Cigarette Boats. Curren$y is weak on that tape, more than usual. But weirdly enough, he got me heavier into hip-hop, so I really have a lot of nostalgia associated with his music.

"WOH" and "Sixty-Seven Turbo Jet" are some of my favorites from him, because the beats are absurdly good. I'm a huge sucker for Harry Fraud though, I know some people aren't big on his style.

Glad you liked the Chico Buarque though!

The Isley Brothers - 3+3

Really enjoyable release, though it’s much different than I was expecting. The grooves are nice and the instrumentals are phenomenal. Something about guitar tone on here is just so fucking tight. It feels like it should be in a Hendrixy psych rock release but it compliments these tracks so well. “That Lady” has become kind of a joke in recent times I think, thanks to its use in movies in such. But man, the guitar work on that track is great, I always forget. And the piano/organ is great, really popping out on a few tracks, like “Sunshine” and “Highways of Life” (that moog, my God). I just wish it was utilized a little more on a few of the tracks.

As for the singing - wow. Ron Isley and co have terrific voices that just boom gorgeously in falsetto. They help carry these tracks, keeping them unbelievably upbeat. The best thing about this genre is its unabashed positivity. I can’t say I was a big fan of the slower cuts but they’re still inspiring in one way or another.

Though it’s an enjoyable listen, I think I like my funk a little rawer. This is more along the lines of psychedelic soul, honestly. The slower paced tracks tend to be a bit boring and kind of give the album an awkward flow. I don’t understand why so many of these funk/soul groups constantly switch between these styles - it only works so well. If this was straight funk or straight soul, I’d probably enjoy it more. Instead, it feels very hit or miss.

>Blizzard of Ozz
I don't think much in here sticks with me, besides Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley, which are fantastic. Those two I remember listening to a lot when I was younger and I guess I've always liked them. Rhoads' guitar playing is good, he gets to shine a few times in this record and his riffs are also what redeem some of the weaker tracks for me. Still, much of this feels pretty one-dimensional with the the music often as eccentric as Ozzy's vocals and nothing else. Guess I wish I were listening to Black Sabbath, where there were other aspects in the music and it felt more balanced.
3/5
>Léo Ferré chante Baudelaire
Wonderful, I love Baudelaire's poetry so it's great to listen to it sung by Ferré, someone I like a lot too. Ferré has a great appreciation for Baudelaire as well, something you can hear when you listen to him performing these poems. The arrangements are pretty varied from track to track but his delivery is constantly amazing and full of emotion.

Overall, Harlem River Drive is a sweet meander through mid-70s Harlem. It's also a fantastic jazz-funk LP that walks through chill rhythms and homey cityscapes. That said, it doesn't have anything wholly inventive or ear-catching through the album, except for the organ in the first track. It meanders, sure, but where to?

I'm fond of it, and recommend it, but only to those who are fans of this kind of smooth jazz-funk fusion.

cheers,
Pom

Your review makes me angry

I hate the stupid "REGGAE hahehehha LE weED music"
listen to the actual engineering going on in the album. The roots of almost all modern electronic/dance music can be traced back to this. yes it's repetitive, but it's supposed to be trance inducing. It's meant for dance, listen to the riddims, let them penetrate and take over.
It was the first type of pop music to really take an alternate approach to how it is created, pulling back the treble and the melody that is so heavily enforced in western pop until that time and bringing a larger emphasis to rhythm.
I think you discredit the music too easily, just because it comes off as first glance as this sort of "woah trippy bro" kind of thing, it has real effort and value behind it.
There is way more artistry and innovation being put forth in these dub mixes than most other stigmatized "stoner" music, like psych rock and jam bands.
The actual composition behind the mix isn't really the focus of this style of music. It's the manipulation of said recordings.
The beats are primitive and monotonous, but they are just there as the foundation to the groove. The engineer is the actual voice of the music. There is a lot of subtlety to it, it's not a very overt form.

>what's so bad about Fire Engines?
Foremost, horrible tone of instruments. There we no clear musical ideas that caught me, it felt mostly just like dissonance for the sake of dissonance.

Comparably, it wasn't like Pere Ubu or Au Pairs where dissonance etc. are used in the context of strong, clear ideas. Nor is it like the Pop Group or Dog Faced Hermans, which go so far into madness that they come out the other side.

The drummer also relied very heavily on a bass/snare 2-beat pattern that was hellishly annoying. Vocals were the bad type of harsh.

I'unno, it just sounded... really bad.

>1977 greatest hits / singles comps / anthologies tracks

Well this was an interesting year. jk. Buzzcocks, ABBA and Bob Marley brought some catchy, fun songs to this bunch and made this slightly less of a chore, but damn.
Punk will be emerging strongly this year, but that's not a genre that puts out too many Greatest Hits collections, or at least that makes a stronger showing on full albums. Buzzcocks are the exception here, and I'm glad they released a singles comp because this playlist would look so fucking imbalanced against the full albums on my list otherwise. Fuck I can't wait to get into the punk-dense period coming up.
ABBA, I would say "catchy as always" but that's not quite true. "Take a Chance on Me" plus two slower, more ballad-y tunes. I'm conflicted, do I really prefer the disco? [i quit writing this part]
The country acts on here, who I usually greatly respect, really didn't put forward a strong bunch of tunes this year. Aside from a Hank cover and a smirk-inducing ode to aging from an aging Jerry Lee it's a rough bunch, and even those two don't save the set from an overwhelming sense of "we need another single this year".
Linda Ronstadt, nothing particularly outstanding. Another Buddy Holly cover, but she picked better with "It Just Doesn't Matter Anymore" last year. [quit here]
Bob Marley, a distinctly laid back vibe this year, no "Small Axe" here, but still solid. Aside from Buzzcocks, Bob Marley is the most interesting [i quit writing this]
[i quit writing the review at this point. i hate writing, i don't know what im doing]

It's good, but it's not THAT good. I love her uptempo songs. Her slow ones are kinda inconsistent. I think The Dreaming is clearly the superior album.

Okay, I got ahead of myself because I'm not gonna have time with the Super Bowl tomorrow.

Isaac Hayes - Theme From Shaft

At first, this feels like a fairly average 70’s soundtrack. The opening tracks have a lot funk guitars, string arrangements and light flute playing in the background. It sounds a lot like a Lalo Schifrin soundtrack at the beginning, but not quite as poppy. There’s some definite funk elements in the first few cuts but they’re obviously to be used at the slower, less exciting moments of the film.

By about the halfway point, Hayes really picks up the pace. The tracks built from mellow openers to the upbeat jazz-funk of “Shaft’s Cab Ride” and “Cafe Regio’s”. The drums are brought forward in the mix, with punchier, more ambitious fills. Instead of string arrangements, horns and saxes become the dominant features of the tracks. Everything shifts to more psychedelic funk by the time “No Name Bar” rolls around. An organ pops up seemingly out of nowhere. The horns are even brighter. There’s still one or two slower songs but it’s straight up triumphant on the third act. Honestly, the last stretch of this album is everything I like about funk.

While the first two acts are all over the place (not in a bad way), it’s likely due to the progression of the movie. I haven’t actually seen Shaft (I’ve been meaning to) so it’s tough to really judge how they fit into everything. But the last act is just so terrific, with the 20 minute, psychedelic jam “Do Your Thing” standing out as the album’s high point. The soloing on it is everything I wanted out of the album so the fact that it all built to this moment really added to the experience.

I’m not sure how to judge soundtracks but this was definitely a great one.

3.5/5

Oh, I forgot to write my review for this album

It's a thoroughly enjoyable listen, with neat jazz and psychedelic funk elements, but like most jazz-funk, goes literally nowhere. Nice to listen to, but is there a point? It's just songs where the artist gets to try out expensive equipment or tries a dumb gimmick.

That said, it's still a nice listen with some super choice jammy bits. 3.5/5

I got quite a bit of time on my hands today. You pick what I listen to next. I'm not sure if you can top Binasu, I can't stop listening to it.
And yeah 25k kittens is the best drone/ambient album I've heard in a looong time. It's so calming.

My critiques of the album are summed up very briefly in that image. I have no issue with repetition in music, my issue is with a lack of direction.

Tracks did develop, but the direction was neither up nor down. The entire album wasn't just repetitive, it was emotionally invisible. The subtlety in production, shifts in tone & etc., was not lost on me. But it only left me a certain sense of "To what end?"

Subtlety is wonderful in composition if it helps the piece go somewhere in a way that is felt, but not noticed at first. Space Invaders went nowhere. And it isn't the good type of go nowhere, like Dadawah's "Peace and Love", which goes nowhere with passion. It is a sort of apathetic oblivion. All effort it makes ultimately results in nothing gained.

etc. etc. lol weed music is for stoners who think turning apples into pipes is totally 420 lol

I did, I think, maybe I didn't. If both people in a single round suck so heinously that neither deserves to continue, a wild card that beats both will take the place.

>goes nowhere
I have trouble with this argument as well. I understand the need for music to develop, to reach some sort of emotional climax, or perhaps even just effectively evoke an idea/opinion. But I can't say that I buy into the argument that everything has to "go somewhere".
Even that terminology feels problematic, what does it mean to "go somewhere"? Does it mean to have a clear and defined conclusion, an apex of some sort. I think there are plenty of examples of music that do not "go anywhere" but are still evocative and artistically sound.
That being said I can understand your distaste for the lack of any real build up, whether it be emotional or musical (although I'd say that there are many points of impact throughout the record).
I think I personally view this as just simple dance music that is meant to, perhaps, unearth more primal, physical feelings within you. Rather than something tangible at the cognitive level.
It's hard to communicate what I'm trying to say but I think the feeling I get when I listen to this music is like I can really just switch my mind to blank and really feel the groove and the rhythm guiding my body. I don't really think about what's exactly happening at any given moment (unless I'm appreciating the technique) I'm just sort of along for the ride.

I don't think that last sentence made much sense lmao

>what does it mean to "go somewhere"
To be evocative. Aspects of song structure are very often part of that, but not always. It is not that I have a distaste for a lack of build up, I'm not a crescendo man myself, but I have a distaste for a lack of outcome, I suppose in other words a lack of surprise.

>there are plenty of examples of music that do not "go anywhere" but are still evocative and artistically sound.
I think the specific definition of "go somewhere" differs here. I mean, a stark divide separates Space Invaders from, say, Brahms' 4th symphony. But, I'd also say that a similar divide parts Space Invaders from something like Einstein on the Beach. Einstein has a powerful forward energy in its repetition. I'd call that going somewhere, even if the structure of the music within Einstein on the Beach is very static.

By "Go nowhere" in this context, I very much mean that it did not satisfy. Space Invaders had the same impact of emotion, for me, that silence has. Maybe there's merit to that. If there is, it isn't the type of merit that wins Tortsament rounds.

"In those days, there was a kind of fever that pushed me out of the front door, into the pale, exhaust-fumed park by Broadwater Farm or the grubby road that eventually leads to Enfield: turkish supermarket after chicken restaurant after spare car part shop. Everything in my life felt like it was coming to a mysterious close: I could hardly walk to the end of a street without feeling there was no way to go except back. The dates I’d had that summer had come to nothing, my job was a dead end and the rent cheque was killing me a little more each month. It seemed unlikely that anything could hold much longer. The only question left to ask was what would happen after everything familiar collapsed, but for now the summer stretched between me and that moment.

It was ferociously hot, and the air quality became so bad that by the evening the noise of nearby trains stuttered in in fits and starts, distorted through the shifting air. As I lay in the cool of my room, I could hear my neighbours discussing the world cup and opening beers in their gardens. On the other side, someone was singing an Arabic prayer through the thin wall. I had no money for the pub so I decided to go for a walk.

I found myself wandering aimlessly to the west, past the terrace of chip and kebab shops and laundrettes near the tube station. I crossed the street, and headed into virgin territory - I had never been this way before. Gravel-dashed houses alternated with square 60s offices, and the wide pavements undulated with cracks and litter. I walked and walked, because there was nothing else for me to do, and by degrees the light began to fade.
>>
>>70809358
>not even the first post i made in this thread
How do we know that? You don't have a trip.
>>
>>70809371

The mouth of an avenue led me to the verge of a long, greasy A-road that rose up in the far distance, with symmetrical terraces falling steeply down then up again from a distant railway station. There were four benches to my right, interspersed with those strange bushes that grow in the area, whose blossoms are so pale yellow they seem translucent, almost spectral; and suddenly tired, I sat down. I held my head in my hands, feeling like shit, but a sudden breeze escaped from the terraces and for a moment I lost my thoughts in its unexpected coolness. I looked up and I realised I was sitting in a photograph.

I remembered clearly: this photograph was taken by my mother in 1982, outside our front garden in Hampshire. It was slightly underexposed. I was still sitting on the bench, but the colours and the planes of the road and horizon had become the photo. If I looked hard, I could see the lines of the window ledge in the original photograph were now composed by a tree branch and the silhouetted edge of a grass verge. The sheen of the flash on the window was replicated by bonfire smoke drifting infinitesimally slowly from behind a fence. My sister’s face had been dimly visible behind the window, and -yes- there were pale stars far off to the west that traced out the lines of a toddler’s eyes and mouth.

When I look back at this there’s nothing to grasp, no starting point. I was inside an underexposed photo from 1982 but I was also sitting on a bench in Haringey.

Strongest of all was the feeling of 1982-ness: dizzy, illogical, as if none of the intervening disasters and wrong turns had happened yet. I felt guilty, and inconsolably sad. I felt the instinctive tug back - to school, the memory of shopping malls, cooking, driving in my mother’s car. All gone, gone forever.

Yeah it was very odd, but I liked how it walked the line between creepy and comforting.
Also, the field recording of the kids singing Drake was suprisingly effective.
I don't tend to like "vocals" in ambient albums though. I guess I'm being weird about it, but I just like that sort of music to be stripped of human elements.
>>
>>70809392
I just sat there for a while. I was so tired that I didn’t bother trying to work out what was going on. I was happy just to sit in the photo while it lasted, which wasn’t for long anyway: the light faded, the wind caught the smoke, the stars dimmed under the glare of the streetlamps. I got up and walked away from the squat little benches and an oncoming gang of kids.

A bus was rumbling to my rescue down the hill, with a great big ‘via Alexandra Palace’ on its front, and I realised I did want a drink after all."
