In terms of fender products I agree. The pre-amps in their basses are outperformed by many other companies. The pickups aren't noticeably better than the standard series too. I'm not a fan of the modern fender neck profiles either. The money people spend on american deluxe/elite guitars could be better spent elsewhere. I kinda like some of the ESP japanese super strat models but there are so many better options out there that you are spoiled for choice at that price point.

i replaced my pickguard and now the first three positions on my strat's 5-pos switch sound the exact same, they all sound like the neck pickup. the 4th and 5th position sounds pretty normal.

why would i buy a tele over a strat?

i played a tele back at school years ago and it was a great feeling. so i always wanted one for my own.
but im sure a strat could easily recreate that feel.
but over the years ive grown to assume that strats are just.. greater in variety.
if i got a tele id assume id be playing blues and rock forever and not much else
but a strat.. i could go into every genre
is that a fair assumption as to why i should get strat over tele?

A Strat on the bridge pickup can get fairly close to the Tele bridge sound but the Tele pickup just has more growl and honk, more character than a Strat. And a Strat can never get close to the Tele inbetween sound.
