Just bought a Super Sonic 22 head and a 2 x 12 cab with a V30 and G12H30.

Can't wait to plug it in when the cab arrives. How'd I do on the speakers? Did I get memed and there are way better speakers for the price out there?

Go to a store and try them all out if you can. Everyone's answer will be preference and different guitars of the same model will play differently out of the box.

That said, I had great luck with my Japanese Fender copy, don't see why a Gibson copy like a Love Rock would be any different. Spent about $650 and got about $1400 worth of guitar. Gotta do your research though.

Warehouse used to have great speakers for the price, used to be able to fill a 4x12 for $200 with some great knock off v30s. Theyre a little more expensive now, they have a couple original styles to for around $90, ive seen some celestions go for twice that. One of my projects this summer is going to be to build 2 identical 2x12s and load them with warehouse speakers and then the same speaker from the original manufacturer to a/b them.

I've got two MIJ Fenders and about eight USA made Fenders and there's nothing particularly "better" about either, The 1980s MIJ Fenders were far better made than the US Fenders of the time but that was the whole reason Fullerotn closed down production, redesigned, retooled and released the US Standards.

The reputation that Fender Japan has/had is just a hangover to a brief period when there were no US Fenders or no good US Fenders. Modern Fender guitars are every bit as good as the MIJ ones and the US pickups are far better. Some MIJ guitars have really weak pickups that just don't come close to something like a 1983 Fender X1 pickup.
>>

If you're really good you can make a shitty guitar sound great, but electronics inside, wood etc. affect sound. You can tell a by sound what guitar is which.

>>
>>70726201
Scott Grove talks a hell of a lot of sense about guitar playing and Fender guitars but he's blinkered into thinking that modern US Fenders aren't up to scratch. He's made Fender Japan his personal God and is too pig-headed to change his opinion now.

what kind of wood makes better sound?
or is it up to preference of the guitarist?

>>
>>70726272
Wood doesn't make a huge difference to anyone other than a very experienced guitarist (I'm talking electric here). Especially when compared to the other parts of your set up. The wood does matter more for acoustic.

I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you need something on some extreme end of the spectrum, like the look, or are a great guitarist that is trying to get the best sound possible and knows exactly what they want.

If you are the latter you will know it and you wouldn't be asking this question.

>>70726356
I should add that I can't tell the difference personally and therefore don't care about wood. But I do know some people that would, at the least, avoid certain woods.
>>
>>70726148
No doubt, get what you want, pay what you want, if you like it that's all that matters. Payong for piece of mind too. i just went with warehouses because i bought a marshall 1960 cab with no speakers for $100, and found an old ampeg bt4 cab with damaged speakers for the same about a month later. I found good reviews for them so i went with it for the ampeg, and i was so surprised i filled the marshall with them too. Theyre just something to consider in the future, especially if you're like me and realize the beauty of running a stereo rig.

Ill definetly post results here. Itll be sooner, depending on when i get a table saw.

Explain to me the differences between the Gretsch Jet club and the Gretsch Pro Jet for the price gap to be a hundred dollars.
Jet club - 300$
Pro jet - 400$
In terms of sound they are the same so what is the physical difference?

People who can hear the difference between ash and alder

... so they spend their time worrying about trifling details that have little or no bearing on the sound of a guitar because a) it lets them appear intelligent and well-informed and b) it gives them an excuse not to practise.

And while I'm at it - a pickup's DC resistance value has no direct correlation to its output level.

Cheaper guitars cut corners in order to reduce the cost of material and the man hours required to build the guitar.

Paint and finish are cheaper; wood is not dehydrated properly, nut materials are cheap less resonant, pickups are made fast and usually overwound, the electronics are not soldered together but are glued together to save time and money. Frets are not finished.

The result is a guitar that warps in humid/dry environments, sounds muddy and because the pickups are unable to cleanly deliver the sound. The nut wears down, the tuners don't hold a tune.

The jump in quality from cheap to $500-$1000 is huge. The jump in quality at $1000 plus is honestly only going to be noticed by people with an ear for it. Normies and non players won't detect the differnces.

Basically though you should know that Stratocasters and ES-335s each have a distinct tone and i would bet most guitar players can easily pick out the two.

The cheap versions of these guitars all sound the same because the pick ups are too muddy to pick up the nuance.

This is with a strat:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Wff7W97PDk

This is with a gibson les paul
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3BRf3WKEoI

However the entry level epiphone and squire will just have a muddy cheap distorted tone; which is actually ok for some types of music.
>>
>>70726523
If you like the grain pattern on a particalar species of wood; think that it is lighter, consider how rare how 'ethical' it is to chop down such a tree; how dehydrated it is, why wouldn't you pay more or less for the wood depending on how much you want it.

Your shit ass squire has a moist as fuck bullshit alder in it. Fuck off poorfag.

If you read the posts at all youd know I was talking about Gretsch models without visible grain.
Also on a guitar nothing matters more than the sound and woods effect on sound with an electric is negligible.

You're a different case than most, i wouldnt recommend it unless you had no other choice. But, in your case you just need to buy something with decent resell value. You have a good chance of buying a shit guitar if you cant play it first. That being said, i bought 3 guitars off ebay in my life, 2 were pretty decent for the price, one was really mediocre but playable.

With you, if you can get a much better deal online than locally, if you dont like what you get and its mildly in demand you could probably undercut the local businesses and still not lose money. Just be smart about it.

Does anyone have experience with a Dimarzio Fred?
Have been wanting to replace the Dimarzio Area in my bridge with a humbucker for a solo sound with more mids/sustain/harmonics, but I want some clarity in the humbucker I replace it with.

How does the Fred sound compared to other pickups you've used?
Other pickups I've been considering are Dimarzio PAF Pro, 36th Anniversary, and the Norton.

Doesn't a double locking design not have to get retuned until string change if yiu stretch the strings and set it up properly? Seems like you get back any extra time spent during restringing a floyd with never having to retune. Especially if you put on good strings.

Somebody already beat me to ds1. A lot of reverb pedals can sound horrible when you dime all the knobs. Bit crushers, albeit intentionally(look up the wmd geiger counter). Fast tremolo can sound really bad too if it doesnt fit rhythm or tempo.

Straight up distortion pedals in general are pretty bad. When used properly overdrive is nice, fuzz is nice most of the time, even those jfet based preamp in a box pedals can sound good(dr boogey, triple wreck), but plain old distortion boxes like the ds1 just sound awful. The ds1 in particular just sounds so cheesy, and you get a volume drop instead of boost so you can't use it to drive an amp very well by itself. Even keeley and analogman can barely make it passable. I mean, if you have a very clean single channel amp and $30 to spare why not? The metal zone pedal can actually sound decent if you spend a lot of time dialing in a sound.

But, to go back to your original question of worst guitar sound, id run.

Ultra cheap strat knockoff in middle or neck position becauss those tend to be muddy for some reason(i think they only buy one type of pickup, a higher output bridge, and stick it in all positions)

Ds1, dimed tone and distortion, volume half way
Compressor, sustain all the way up
Cheap phaser with a wide, slow sweep
Noise reduction pedal(buy a cheap one that introduces noise) set just high enough it cuts out notes after a second or 2
Reverb pedal that makes you sound like youre in a cave in a cave in a cave
Then the tremolo, set so it completely cuts out sound

Then, run it into a mid 2000s cheap high wattage solid state amp(rogue had a 120watt 2 speaker one that was horrible, or one of the cheaper randall half stacks) on the dirty channel with the gain and bass turned up with the treble and mids scooped.

Two major problems. First, the Eb in the second chord in the rhythm progression throws everything off. It should all be in A major, the out-of-scale note is fucking it up. Second thing is you keep accenting the minor third for some reason in your lead, and even switching to A minor pentatonic while the rhythm keeps playing in A major. It's a huge clash that sounds like shit

>Ever heard of "mixing major and minor pentatonics in blues"
It works in blues for a specific reason. Take the classic 12 bar blues progression in E for example. The rhythm is technically in E major. But E minor pentatonic will work over it because the backing is so melodically ambiguous. The 3rd is undefined for most of it, so you can decide what you want it be in your lead playing. It lets you go back and forth between the major and minor third to create tension. But the rhythm you used in your improv doesn't give you that freedom, it's distinctly A major (save for the Eb mistake)

sounds like the chord progression competing for supremacy with the lead
and since you're going for a rising energy sort of thing you really gotta balance that out

You do this how?
Let the lead rest every now and then and have the chords play on its own in between the breaks bit until you get within like 10 seconds of needing to ramp up the lead
>>
>>70731874

So if you aren't supposed to plug bass guitars into guitar amps what do 8 and 7 string players with their guitars downtuned into the bass guitar range use?

Also, if the concern is with the speakers on the guitar combo amps thrn couldn't a guitar amp head be plugged into a bass cab and be okay?
>>
>>70733453
>couldn't a guitar amp head be plugged into a bass cab and be okay?
Yes

If low volume you can plug the bass with no problem
>>
>>70733509
Will it damage the tube amp head if the volume is high or just the speakers?
>>
>>70733525
Speakers. Amp won't care. Non-bass speakers will develop little rips in the cone if a bass goes through them
>>
>>70733546
Is there even a difference between bass amp heads and guitar amp heads then if the speakers are a concern?
>>
>>70733577
Are the concern*
>>
>>70733546
This. Keep in mind a combo amp wont like the vibration from a bass either. Can shake the tubes and cause them to fail, and blowing a speaker is very likely, and there goes the tubes or worse.
>>
>>70733601
But if its not a combo but instead a head hooked into a bass cab it's fine? What kind of cab does players with 7 or 8 strings use with their drop tuning?
>>
>>70733453
>and 7 string players with their guitars downtuned into the bass guitar range use?

Cutting the bass on the eq helps, but the pickups arent bass heavy really, tend to be more mids ranged, and dont have high peaks like a bass.

I sometimes use a bass amp just because the volume is easier to control at home. Sometimes I will run a bi-amp with a bass amp as well.

>>
>>70733649
>head hooked into a bass cab it's fine?

Yes. Match your cab and amp impedance. Most bass cabs have a 4 ohm rating, some 8.

A 1x15 is fine. 2x10 is ok, but like I said I generally bi amp a 2x12 and a 1x15 split from a pedal, or slaved through the effects loops/line outs. Bass amp doesnt distort as much.

My regular amps handle an 8 tuned to E just fine. Does get a little muddy though.

What do I do anons. Only thing I know is that I like humbuckers best. Currently have an Orange Dark Terror but now I'm looking at getting an AC30, but no idea if it'll be worth it. Argh.

Just keep playing. Borrow friend's equipment. Bother music stores by trying out instruments.

Ive been playing for 4 years and my hand still feels uncomfortable holding a pick sometimes. Whats the best way to hold it? My index finger likes to curl up a lot, but should it be closer to the right or left side of the pick?

There's no bubinga visible on that guitar. Buckeye burl, wenge, Macassar ebony, maybe ash for the body core, but no bubinga.

Speaking of which (I'm the guy in the second quote), I can get an AC30 head for about $150 more than an AC15 head. Only difference besides the wattage (and maybe more valves?) is the fact that the AC30 has an effects loop.

Price difference enough to justify going for an AC30? Or does the AC15 sound just as good?

I'm not you, but I never consider an amp that does not have an FX loop.

Just ordered me one of these. Cost me a thousand bucks ausfailian. They are usually about 1500 here so that is on the cheap. Probably clearing out the shit before the new namm stuff gets here. Hoo eee. Man life is good.

My master studies prevented me from playing the guitar for 2 years. I usually use my e-guitar with a Line 6 interface to play over my computer (Amplitube, etc.). Do you know if there were any cool updates or new products in that field?

I have an AC15 and I am delighted with it. Didn't go for an AC30 because they are much more of a pain to lug about, and more importantly they are a lot harder to get a good sound of at low volumes. I practice in my flat quite a lot and the 15 gets a great tone for what I need. More than loud enough to gig with as well which is nice, haven't played any huge venues yet but it would be micd up anyway.

As for the effects loop, I never use it. I stick a Boss SD-1 in the front end, as well as a compressor sometimes, and thats it. If you are big on pedals that might be an issue for you to be fair. Mine is a greenback one not an Alnico blue, does exactly what I want it to. Make sure you try them both first though.
