Gibson has literally always been shit. It's never been about the quality, it's about the name.

Obtain pot and capacitor. Drill hole next to existing pot. Insert new pot. Connect as necessary. Done.
If you have an active preamp in the guitar you could add an operating amplifier so the high pass doesn't affect the signal "in front" of it.

One of my resolutions for this year is to find people to play with and I'm trying to get gud at bass guitar.

How do I escape the hell of fifths and octaves so my playing feels more colourful and diverse?

My current reference of a bass that's both functional to the song and standing on its own is what Ghost has been doing from their second album. Some examples of what I like from them:

https://youtu.be/KOrXKiSy8ZY
https://youtu.be/LStgyahX8Vc

I know funk bass guitar has a lot of this, but it may be a little too much of a main role for my tastes.

What knowledge do I need to learn to improve it? How do I train it?

It is, indeed.
The bass guitar in Opus Eponymous didn't really get my attention. They probably got a new bass player for Infestissumam or he/she stepped up her game because I love the bass in both that album and Meliora.
>>
i am really interested in talking about this to an absurd extent, i've actually been in the process of transferring my nine years of guitar experience over to bass guitar. it's been way more rough than i've imagined, but i seem to find my best learning experiences picking out inspiring or intriguing songs, isolating and analyzing the bass work as best as i can, and repeatedly (not read: eternally) practice alongside those works. it gives me a good sense of feel for resonance, rhythmic patterns, little dynamic flares of [insert music theory jargon] and [insert music theory jargon] - just makes me feel like a bassist. imo, that rhythmic approach is way more important than focus on tonalities and composition and what-have-ya. it's a low frequency instrument already; the less obsessive listeners can likely reduce accidental notes/tones to low frequency jumbles - a low profile buzz. but the rhythm and feel of a strummer always remains crucial and hugely apparent, whether its harmony is understandable or not.

yeah, i can't properly articulate the retarded mass amount of bass talk i've been bottling up inside of me in one post. bass thread, come soon; good luck jammin

Now that you say it, I hear it too. I prefer the more groove-driven first album though, the second and third are a bit too "poppy" to fit the imagery IMO. Though I still like listening to them.
And the guitars on the first album are a bit more structured, and more interesting to me.
To each their own I guess.

Question, if I'm playing G mixolydian, do other keys have almost the same scale shape then (for mixolydian)? So when I play A mixolydian it has a similar shape but on a different part of the neck?

If this is the case, all I really have to learn for modes, is their scale shapes. Then as long as I know where the root of the key im playing is, it all just falls into place.

Or am I completely wrong?
>>
Is there a suggested phase for Justin's beginner course?
I haven't moved away from stage 1 for the past week, I've been playing all the songs (those with at least 3 chords), I'm able to comfortably play Bad Moon Rising which is probably my favorite from his list of beginner songs.
Should I start Stage 2 next week?

http://www.johnsykes.com/equipment.html

>AMPS: John uses Marshall amps and Mesa Boogie amps. For the last ten + years of Thin Lizzy tours or Sykes tours, John has been plugging his Les Paul straight into one 50 watt JCM 800 Marshall head running in to one Marshall 4x12 (or one of his custom-made made 4x12's). A back-up 50 watt JCM 800 Marshall and 4x12 are also on stage ready to go should the first amp go down.

For much of the Whitesnake '87 album and first Blue Murder album John used 2 Mesa Boogie Coliseum heads. These amps have a Mark III pre-amp section but use six 6L6 power tubes--giving the amps180 watts each! John also owns several Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+'s, Mark III's and some rack mounted Mesa Dual Recto heads. Other Mesa Boogie equipment includes a Tri-Axis preamp and a Strategy 500 Power Amp.

For speaker cabinets, John uses Marshall 4x12 cabinets, Mesa Boogie metal grill "Half Back" 4x12 cabinets, Mesa Boogie 4x12 Recto cabinets and some custom made 4x12 cabinets.

EFFECTS: The rack setup used during the later Blue Murder days included a Mesa Boogie Dual Recto head, a Mesa Boogie Tri-Axis Preamp, a Mesa Boogie IIC+ head, a Mesa Boogie Strategy 500 Power Amp, a rackmounted Dunlop Crybaby, a Lexicon PCM 41, a Lexicon PCM 70, and an H&H V800 Power Amp.

STRINGS & PICKS: John uses Ernie Ball Strings -- "Regular Slinkys" or "Reinforced Plain Steel" gauged at .010 to .046 (thanks to Derek Brooks for his help). He also uses Dunlop 1.14mm Tortex picks

Any jazzanons here? I need some help with jazzguitar. My quintet include Me on guitar, a drummer, pianisti, a saxophonist and a basist. We going to jam "Ranskalaiset koro" (French Heels), and the chords are F7, E7 and Am. The band wishes me to play chords and some licks when the saxophonist Is resting. Does anyone know good scales/modes and jazzchords that go well with that progression?
The genre Is Lounge/Cool Jazz, but sometimes we wish to Spice it up with Bebop.
>>
>>70676856
It's technically difficult, motherfucker, that was my point. Any genre is about as technically difficult as you want to make it. Jazz and Fusion have a higher technicality baseline that metal.

K well explain what you mean about each of the three and also Schechter. Because I don't know thats why I asked.

Also, PRS, I don't like that man himself. He's a snake oil salesman. He says Grover tuners are what makes guitars lose $1000 in value tone wise but his tuners are worth $10,000. The tuners literally just keep tension in the string. Theres not much physically they can do to change the tone, just the tension. That to me says he's dishonest.

>PRS is a snake oil salesmen who says really dumb dishonest bullshit

yes

but PRS guitars outside of the full fat custom USA range are some of the best guitars ever made, especially the CE

Fender has been turning out less than stellar guitars for too much money for years, there's not a single reason to get one over a G&L

Gibson is just straight garbage, how a company that supposedly runs all their guitars through a PLEK machine constantly puts out such trash is beyond me
>>
>>70677885
I'll admit the 85/15 pickups sound really great, but I havn't played a PRS core guitar to see how the playability is. The SEs are just typical korean stuff.

Gibson I know has had issues with nuts breaking and wearing out in 6-24 months and has had to issue replacements, they finally are adresssing the headstock breaking issue on a few custom shop models this year.

However, the ES-335 studio is probably one of the best guitars i've played as far as playabilyt, build quality, and tone. And you can grab it for $2k.

I'm strongly leaning towards a high end Fender or one of these Schecters at the moment. But nobody has really given me a good rundown on the quality of high end Fenders.

I've been hangin around a local shop pretty often and have gotten to become pals with the older dudes who own the shop, and every now and then I'll fix guitars and amps that I find in pawn shops and try and flip them (about a 50% success rate) and BS about my projects and they seem pretty stoked on it. I recently replaced the grill cloth on a sweet little Music Man combo and one of the dudes was pretty impressed. He said "I know where to go if I need to get grill cloth done". They usually give me good deals on stuff I buy from there and give me wholesale price on shit I order from them. Now I just gotta get them to hire me :s

Is there much of an improvement between a 2010 prs se and a 2015 prs se? I bought a 2010 used from guitar center for 420 in red but I found a 2015 prs se in blue with a floyd rose used for 550. I'd much prefer the blue over the red and I wouldn't mind have a floyd but I'm wondering if the electronics or build qaulity is better? I'm thinking about upgrading the pick ups anyways so it would be the electronics besides the pick ups.

My very first bass was/is a Ibanez Iceman 550, I believe. Got it used, so I don't know the exact model. That's the model that looks the most like it.

Great bass. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it has a strap pin on the back, where the neck bolts on. Causes the instrument to be top heavy, and the head to fall towards the floor.

I don't trust the strap pins on it, so I replaced them with locking ones. A better solution would be to remove it, and drill a hole in the standard position. since it was my first instrument, it's my baby. I ain't doing that shit.
