How the fuck do I learn guitar?
>inb4 read sticky

What I mean is how can I learn to think on my own? I can look up songs and play them pretty well, but I can't think for myself,

Should I just learn scales?

Basically what I'm looking for is to become one of those old guys on a porch fiddling on a guitar
>>
I just can't get the intonation on my sixth string adjusted correctly and its also having fret buzz when fretting. Could this be a problem with my nut?
>>
>>70661388
Study theory. I like fretboard mastery.
>>
>>70661388
You need to learn some theory. And practice improv

Can't go wrong with a Strat or Tele. Strat has more tone options but you'll probably only use two. Teles have great bright sound

Try them out in store see which you like better. I have both and like the Tele's clean sound more but the Strat is fun too.
>>

All of it. And you should get fretboard mastery it's only 15-20 on amazon and it does a great job at teaching theory.

>What should I learn specifically about theory?
Depends on what style of music you play
>Or is it all useful
It's all similar enough to be useful for most styles in most situations.
>Also how do I practice improv?
Get a backing track in whatever key you want and riff on the scale that goes for that key. Try to riff in tempo and keep count. Once you can do that try playing chords and then going into a riff in tempo. Blues is really good for this.
>>
>>70661631
possibly, look at the neck and make sure it isn't bending towards you at all, backwards. if there's any bend whatsoever, it should be a very slight bend forward, away from you. how long have you been playing? could be you're just not barring completely and you're doing micro-bends to make it sound out of tune
>>
>>70661664
How do I riff?

Just play notes from the scale?
>>
>>70661538
Mix them up. Run scales up, run em down, slow and fast. Play one note at a time. Play in different patterns on the neck. Sing-whistle-hum or just say the interval during the run. Play only segments. Skip intervals during runs. Major pentatonic up, minor pentatonic down. Etc.
>>
>>70661473
>What should I learn specifically about theory?
http://www.musictheory.net/lessons

i'm looking for a more rigorous and complete music theory book though, anyone got any recommendations? not shit like "this is what a quarter note is", stuff like about tonics and dominants and subdominants and chord substitutions and stuff. or should i just take justinguitar's jazz course?
>>
>>70661396
Did you put too much slack in the string when stringing it? I have strung it like this guy at 1:57 my guitar stays better in tune.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHgSSzpsxuw

Check your truss rod and see if your action is not too high or too low.
>>
>>70661690
Pretty much. If you can't come up with a riff just run part of the scale while keeping tempo.
>>
JEMs are pretty ugly tbqhwyfam
>>
>>70661690
think of a musical phrase in your head, and then use the instrument to convey it. if you don't know what to say, don't say anything. sometimes, a single note cant be more powerful and expressive than a bunch of beef stew. watch rob chapman "improv" to see what i mean by beef stew

start by playing a single note, and then ask yourself where do i want to go next? where will my next note be going? will it be followed immediately by other notes, or will it be by itself? will the note be a start of a phrase, or the end of a phrase etc etc
>>
>>70661729
I like the vine inlay. I know it's kinda tacky but it's kinda impressive in a way.
The monkey grip is dumb.
>>
>>70661670
I just started playing again a couple weeks ago. The string is sharp no matter how far down I adjust it. I tried bending the string both ways to see if that made it any flatter and it didn't. Checking the truss rod it seems like it needs tightened but it wont tighten anymore.
>>
>>70661475
Looks like a case of literal autism
>>
>>70661268
holy autism batman
>>
>>70661795
don't fuck up your guitar by messing with the truss rod excessively.. are you talking about it going sharp when you're playing? it shouldn't be sharp right after you finish tuning it obviously, bc that's what tuning is. if it's going sharp when you're playing it, you're probably bending it without meaning to. it's the thinnest string and thus the easiest to bend, intentionally or otherwise. its impossible to bend a string flat

I need some headphones.

Yeah, I know there is that circlejerk general on /g/ sometimes, but I need a pair to practice bass with (also listening to some music sometimes).

Budget is tight so around 150€ is the most I can spend.

I found three which seem interesting:

+Audio-Technica ATH-M50 X
+Sennheiser HD-380 Pro
+Beyerdynamic DT-770 PRO/80 Ohm

Pros/cons on those?
What do you guys use?

Truss rod needs tightened a bit as it's curved a bit too far forward but my action is set up exactly as prs recomends in it's manual. Im going to try adjusting the saddle all the way forward then tunning it and having another go at adjusting the saddle down so the 12th fret isn't sharp. Couls getting new saddles help? I'm thinking about grabbing the string saver ones.

I have the same problem as you and I've been playing for 15 years. We all have this problem. My only advice to you is PLAY. Always be in a musical environment, always be learning something new, even if you think it's "not your style". Sadly we're not all Bach so we can't just come up with alien technology off the top of our heads, you have to always be drawing ideas from everything that influences you and working to adapt them for your own playing. Seriously just play and listen to and learn a lot of music, the creativity will come. You need that foundation first.

That's why I said do your homework. A vintage guitar which has already had a refret and a couple of repairs is worth nothing to a collector, but they make amazingly affordable player guitars. Everything was hand made back then, no shitty Chinese pickups and hardware.

To anyone who works at a guitar shop is it a good place for a job? I might apply for a mom+pop shop that's run by a rich guy who sells some of his collection at a time, it's in a small apartment living room that's been renovated into a shop. It doesn't seem like much traffic goes on there but I'll get to surround myself with sweet instruments and amps all day. depends on your skillset.

if you're just looking for sales, go to guitar center or something right off the bat. you don't have to deal with much in the way of "small business bullshit" like owners trying to cheat you out of hours/money or paying you under the table or unreasonable demands/expectations.

If you have good enough experience to restring (including innotation and truss rod alignment) or do minor repairs (like pickup/electronic replacement or even minor body work) then you'd be a godsend to smaller mom and pop shops.

When i was in highschool years back (2010) i did an internship at a mom and pop store and learned all the ins and outs. Even got offered an actual job there once the internship ended (it was for a school project) but i declined because it was a 30+ minute commute from home. It was a pretty good deal, spent a lot of times with hands on some real finds (like an original 61 SG with all the Les Paul brandings), as well as getting familiar with all the regulars who would stop in for hours every day and just shoot the shit or jam. I also picked up free lessons from those guys on the clock, and even got in contact with an amateur luthier who made some amazing instruments.

It's definitely not the worst experience (especially if you're a gear head) but don't expect it to be all sunshine and roses either.

I like the method book by that hal leonard company. Make sure you watch ben ellers youtube video on string muting and practice it as you go. It's his "why you suck as guitar lesson 13" video. There is also a great theory book called fretboard mastery.

>>

All of that will just deter a beginning guitarist. It's useless and totally unnecessary.
>>
>>70665444
This guy is right though.
To be a great guitar player you only need the most basic rudimentary grasp of how music theory works in relation to guitar. All you need is to understand circle of fifths, relative keys, and memorize scale shape patterns.
>>
>>70665848
Thats fucking bullshit. A beginning guitars needs to learn notation so he can practice properly.
>>
>>70665902
Incorrect. A begging guitarist needs to do chromatic scaling to build up finger independence. Secondly they should learn basic open chords. Thirdly, they should be introduced to the minor pentatonic scale in a minor at the 5th fret. Advanced music theory isn't necessary at all.

first the pentatonic scale is a worse scale to start off with compared to the major scale. the only thing good about it is that its easier to sound good playing over blues when you don't know what you're doing. and second it doesn't matter what fret you start off. pentatonic A on the 5th fret is the exact same as pentatonic B on the 7th and so on. its obvious you're doing the justinguitar beginner course and parroting it here. i'm not even a critique of justinguitar, hell i DID it, but its annoying that you're acting like its the be all end all

Never been to justins guitar, but A minor pentatonic 1st position is the most common starting place for all guitarists. Transposing the scale shape into different keys comes later after they memorize that particular shape and position. You're just grasping at straws now and trying to be difficult.

Not sure if this is entirely on topic, but whatever.

I'm interested in getting a Modulus Funk Unlimited 4, but with all the upgrades/options I want, the total is approx. $6,000... I'm not sure if dropping that much cash on an instrument is smart when I can't even play one to see if I like it.

So, a question. Everything I've read indicates that Modulus is a wonderful company, and no one has problems with there instruments. Should I just save up and buy one? Or should I try to find a way to play one first? No one that I know has one, and I've only ever seen one sold nearby, and that was an hour away.

My final question, is this: are there any problems with changing necks on basses? I've got an Ibanez GSR205SM, and was wondering if putting an 5-string carbon fiber neck on it was possible/worth it. I've had it for two years, and love it. But I've had problems with neck warping on my main two basses.

The affinity Teles are great. Only issues I had with mine was a quiet neck pickup and some sharp frets but that might just have been a bad one out the bunch.

Raised the neck pickup which took all of two minutes and the volume was same as the bridge. Things stays in tune really well. Idk about the Strats but the Classic Vibes are fucking great for a little more used.

That's why I'm interested in putting a $120 carbon fiber neck on my $320 Ibanez first.

However, I play in groups. Mainly school and community groups, but I've been in a paid group before. I don't just play for the fun of it. This is a possible career path for me, so I think investing in that is valid.

Modulus basses have a good track record, so don't knock them just for their price tag.

The main benefit they offer for me is their carbon fiber, or Graphite, neck. No warping. No need to adjust the truss rod. I've had problems with dead zones on my basses, and fret buzz. Never heard of these problems with Modulus.

I'm trying to figure out one of the riffs to the Talking Heads song I Zimbra from an old instructional video. In the video, he shows half of the main riff to the song I Zimbra in detail, but seems to do the second part by nature, and doesn't explain what he's doing.
As best as I can tell, the chord shape he uses is e:5 B:8 G:7 D:5
and the chord progression (with the high e string being the fret that the chord is on) seems to be 5/7-5-4/6-5-3-5
Thing is, this really does not sound right past the first 3 chords. If anyone would be willing to watch the video and figure out what I'm missing I would greatly appreciate it. The riff starts at the 23 minute mark of the video, directly after the riff played on the 12th fret, and only lasts a few seconds.

The used Dingwalls I can find are about as expensive as a used Modulus.

You did, however, lead me to discover the Stingray Neck Through. The deal breaker before was that I didn't like the head stock, and the fact that the neck was bolt on, just like every other bass I've had. Neck Through offers enough benefits that I'm willing to overlook the head stock.

Amplitube sounds much more real, you cant even compare
Have you ever heard the Marshall of a Kemper? pfffffff
>>
I'm on a bit of a shoe-string budget, and am currently torn between a Jackson JS11 Dinky Electric Guitar, and a Squier Bullet Stratocaster with Tremolo HSS.
Squire is cheaper, but I like the sound of the Dinky more. These both came as a suggestion from a guitarist friend of mine, so that's what I'm currently running with. Any thoughts?

Do you already have an amp and everything else?
>>

I wanna put a bugsbee on mine
>>
>>70669918
I have a bass amp, if that counts for anything, and a few picks
>>
anybody got that picture of the ideal input jack?
>>

>Squier Bullet Stratocaster with Tremolo HSS.
cheap piece of shit. look around at pawn shops, get something that isn't too broken, and then take it to a guitar place and ask them to repair anything broken and get it set up for you
>>
>>70669979
>cheap piece of shit
Fair enough, thanks for the warning. I might just spend tomorrow going around to pawn shops, that's a good idea, thank you

I might double up on lessons too, I went there a couple times last year for lessons and the guy was very cool but loved Neo-Classical. I've been trying to learn to read music and I bet he'll be able to help me. I recently got a promotion at a bar I work at and I'm making $150 a night and when I'm done with bartendie training it raises to $230 a night. I'm not really looking for financial gain working at the shop just meeting musicians an talking about gear

Some websites claim using better solder is a way to improve your guitar. What types of solder would be an improvement over the stock solder?
>>
>>70670245
I only use the finest tonesolder.
>>
>>70670312
There are different qaulities of solder you retarded memester.
>>
>>70670330
60/40 rosin
>>
>>70670344
Are the manufacturers using lead free or something? It would explain why people recomended to upgrade it.
>>
>>70670372
yeah
>>
>>70669927
you have one? how is it?
theyre intensely aesthetic imo
>>
>>70669961
Yeah, from last thread
>>70642882
>>
>>70670245
quick connect non-soldering will be better than and solder, no matter the material

iow its bullshit
>>
>>70657352

most retarded shit i've ever read

why do you mongs not understand basic fucking physics

look at a through bridge and look at a BIgsby

do you really think your shitty break angle is doing anything but making your guitar worse to use, your strings stiffer, and prone to breakage

if you're dumb enough to buy some grandpa-ass bigsby at least string it up right and stop embarrassing real guitar players like your bum grandpa did
>>
>>70669750
That's actually pretty sexy but I still prefer dots I think
>>
I bought a used guitar and I'm getting concerned that something might be wrong with the truss rod. I have it tightened as much as it will tighten but its bowing forward too much towards the strings. The strings too high off the 12th fret when I hold down the 1st and last fret. Is there any way to adjust this or am I going to have to pull the fingerboard off and stick a new truss rod in?
>>
>>70670245
silver solder
>>
are emg pups any good?
also, what do the numbers mean? is that just model?
>>
>>70670605
take it to a guitar shop and pay them to deal with it
>>
>>70670605
>>70670782
actually reading your post it seems like your truss rod is fucked beyond repair. it shouldn't ever really tighten as much as it will tighten. i hope your neck's a bolt-on so you can get it replaced, otherwise you need a new guitar
>>
>>70670769
yes, they're fantastic and underrated, metaltards have ruined their rep almost

the numbers are indicative of position usually, but the humbuckers are so high output that you could put a 60(meant for neck position) in the bridge
>>
>>70670769
>pups
this term really triggers me
>>
>>70670835
Can't I just pull the fretboard off and put a new truss rod in it?
>>

My friend is selling a Schector Omen Extreme-4 in Vintage Sunburst. He's asking $200.
It retails on Amazon for ~$450 and Schector lists it as ~$600. I haven't seen it yet, but he assures me there's no damage.
Good deal? Or should I save up for a more expensive bass.
>>
>>70671131
unless you got a thousand dollar guitar it'll probably be cheaper to not do that
