Master of Puppets [Elektra, 1986]
I feel a distinct generation gap between myself and this music, not because my weary bones can't take its power and speed, but because I was born too soon to have had my dendrites rewired by progressive radio. The momentum of this band can be impressive, and as with most fast metal (as well as some sludge metal), they seem to have acceptable political motivations--antiwar, anticonformity, even anticoke. Fine. Problem is, the revolutionary heroes I envision aren't male chauvinists too naive to know better, they're not Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan the Barbarian, all flowing hair and huge pecs. That's the image Metallica calls up, and I feel no more entitled to summon their strength of my own free will than I am the 1812 Overture's. B-

Metal died in 1983. Only 12 good albums have been released since then (most of them in 1984, being already recorded by 1983). Metal achieved its creative peak in albums like Sin After Sin, Court in the Act, and Melissa, elevating the genre into a legitimate art form. Now, thanks to Master Of Puppets and Slayer, all its potential was squandered and the genre has been reduced into being mere gimmick ridden noise for drunk idiots (i.e. the lowest common denominator - stop trying to turn underground metal into AC/DC).

Crypt Sermon are good and Immolation is easily the greatest band on that lineup. Beyond that everything ranges from okay (Pig Destroy, Sleep, Khemmis) to fucking awful (Panopticon, Municipal Waste, Falls Of Rauros, Agoraphobic Nosebleed) and I've never listened to the others.
If I had to pay $80 just to see two bands I like live and a bunch of others I either don't like or outright hate I'd definitely have to decline.

Yeah, Crypt Sermon, Kehmmis, and Immolation would be great. I don't like Panopticon (but they may be cool to see as they're a pretty big-name band and they rarely play live), and the rest I haven't listened to. So I'm thinking pass.
It's kind of a shame because last year's Choosing Death Fest had a much better lineup imo. The only two bands I was iffy on were Deceased and Noisem, but at least they had a great stage presence.

Most pre-80s bands got relegated to CRR during the 90s, but in 1986 you could still hear the new Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, etc single on the AM stations.

Beach Boys' cover of Wipeout went to #12 in 1987 and Kokomo was a #1 hit a year after that.

spelling aside that song was the goat and got me into rock/metal
>>70479150
In the 80s, good rock stations would spin album sides on the reg, or even full albums. Plus a sprinkling of deep cuts and requested obscurities.

Why did they name their band after a darkthrone demo tape song?

Take your bargain bin fucking deathcore elsewhere

>Most pre-80s bands got relegated to CRR during the 90s
That coincides with major labels dropping dadrock bands during the grunge era. Most of them were still signed with Columbia, Warner, Atlantic, and whatnot during the Reagan years, by the 90s they'd all been dumped onto budget labels like CMC. Generally, Top 40/rock radio only plays major label artists.

I'm surprised nobody talks about these guys. They are supposed to be releasing an album later this year.

Why did they take their name from a C.S. Lewis novel?

One was Metallica's first radio hit, unless you count Jump in the Fire which was a big hit in New Zealand.

>Current live performances since 2004 are in D standard tuning, as opposed to the E standard tuning of earlier live performances.

Apparently good enough for W.A.S.P. to steal their cover art.
>>70479632
I noticed that.

Also, curiously enough, Inside The Electric Circus was a major success in Scandinavia.
WHERE IS ETERNAL DEVASTATION??
>>70479775
It's more likely that this album inspired both of those W.A.S.P. and Lynx covers.
Heck, Kiss even co-opted the name of one of their albums.

+1 point because someone yelled "Omlette du fromage" at Neige
The Body was probably the most awkward opener they could have thought of for Alcest, seriously, what the fuck. I thought I was watching a David Lynch performance. I was not prepared for that
