If you want a dull sound with some "thump" instead of ringing sustain then yes get them. Get D'adarrio Chromes so you don't spend too much just to hate them.

Anything cool from NAMM?
>>
>>70471215
I had them on an Epiphone G400 last year. They were pretty cool. VERY dark tone however, if you like to play a lot of ambient/experimental music on your guitar then go for it.

Haven't seen anything cool yet. Mostly some new guitars that don't look any better than anything that's come out before.

Does anyone here have a Digitech Space Station that could help me?

I used to run a space station in an FX loop and get beautiful swells. However, everything else was shit in the loop so all my pedals are now in front.

However, when the Space Station is in front it seems to only have two options: It doesn't pick up soft playing, and once I play louder it suddenly gets LOUD

Is there a pedal I can place in front that would reduce my DB by X? Sort of like an anti-Boost, the opposite of a boost pedal

If anyone has been watching some new pedals coming out, ProGuitarShop just released a video about the new Digiten feedback pedal. Sounds like a fucking cool idea since I don't have a sustainiac to produce feedback stuff for me.

Also EHX Blurst street price is around 137 bucks, making it hella obtainable for me. Think I might pick one up soon.

Glad to be of help anon. Be sure to read the manual because it has ways of being set up that are different, for instance, by default it goes Rec->Overdub->Play but I like having it just go >rec->Play->Overdub for tapping. The footswitch I mentioned makes it MUCH easier to start and stop loops, takes out the need to double tap making things flow a little better if you are using it.

Stratosphere part out 2nd hand and surplus and 2nds guitars. Some people object to the way they do business, taking perfectly got guitar apart for parts, but they can be cheap as for genuine parts

I've only bought from them a couple of time and everything was exactly as advertised and in perfect condition.

YMMV of course, but I can definitely recommend them.

no its not

stratosphere literally buys brand new guitars from places like guitar center and then parts them out

I think its a smart business and super helpful for people that like building partscasters...only problem is their profit margins seem super high so its never a good deal building guitars with their stuff, it will make a guitar thats more your ideal though.

Theres some guy on ebay that buys vintage guitars and parts them out which is pretty stupid imho.

I don't know what he's on about, that's how it's supposed to be strung.
>>
>>70479095
>>70479178
No, it's fucking not

it's how they are always strung, but it's wrong

going over the bar instead of under makes your Bigsby return to pitch much more easily, and also makes it have less overall tension. you don't break strings as often because it takes a break point out of the string as well
>>
>>70479225
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't rest on the bridge properly if you string it over the bar but I'm willing to give it a try when I restring my guitar.
>>
>>70475016
I own 3. My hellraiser deluxe came to me with no isseue and plays really nice, the second one is acoustic which I don't play since I found out that I'm not a bug fan of acoustics, the third one is an omen-7 extreme I bought for 40 bucks and it had a couple of issues (paint on the neck joint letting the neck move around, not grounded properly) I had to fix and then I found out that to person who owned it before me stripped the truss rod nut because he put the lower strings of an 8-string set. After some work though it became a really nice player with really low action and as long as I keep the same gauge strings on then I won't have to worry about intonation. Also all of my guitars have the same paint job, I didn't do this on purpose they happen to be good deals and have that paint job.
>>
>>70479339
there are millions of guitars with shallower approach angles than an over-bar bigsby, it does nothing bad to it and is purely positive

they just go off of what other people say and don't really have an intuition for it

if a guitar has tuning problems, it's either because something moved, or something wanted to move and couldn't. reducing unnecessary friction and removing a break angle on your string is always a plus.

this also comes into play on your tuning pegs, having a straight line from the nut to your peg is always better than another design.

Hey I'm a beginner faggot and I'm wondering if an electric would be better than an acoustic to learn on. The electric's necks seem thinner than acoustic and might be better for my tiny ass fingers. Any help?
>>
>>70480888
Play what you want to play
>>
>>70480888
You're gonna get a lot of different answers, I'd say it depends on what you want to play. If you want to play classical/folk/country stuff obviously don't start on electric, otherwise maybe start on acoustic.

Either way, acoustic will be harder for your fingers, which some say will make it easier for you to switch to acoustic later on. Basically it's easier to switch from acoustic to electric than vice versa, and acoustics are cheaper
>>
>>70480888
Just depends on what kind of music you want to play. And it is possible to buy a short-scale acoustic with a thin neck that will better suit your needs if you feel more oriented toward acoustic guitar music.
>>
>>70480923
oops, meant "otherwise, maybe start on electric"
>>
>>70480888
some will say that learning on an acoustic is better because it forces u to really learn foundational skills like harmony, rhythm, and melody rather than starting to fiddle with tone and effects before you really understand guitar.

BUT

while that does have some merit, it's a fairly antiquated opinion. if you want to play metal and only metal, theres no use wasting time on an acoustic is there?

I think I'm autistic, but I just bought a LTD BW-1 and I can't get the strings as low as I like without fret buzz. Checked the truss rod to make sure there's a little bit of neck relief (using my Fender Strat as a reference, which has amazingly low string action with no buzz), but still fret buzz.

Should I pay a luthier to level the frets, given that that seems to be the issue? Or do I just live through the higher string action?

Not really, it only applies to strat or tele type guitars. There are so many quality strat parts out there that it would be stupid to spend more than $1000 on any strat type guitar.

I would get the body from a small custom builder (google hardwood guitar bodies etsy, won't let me post the link) , maybe there's someone in Australia if it's too expensive. For necks I use allparts since I feel they're just as good as anything else on the market and they're pretty cheap. Then all that's left is the hardware and pickups which should be pretty standard to buy in your country. Buy all the same pickups and hardware as the Charvel and your guitar should turn out pretty damn close in quality to the original

practice what?
>>
>>70483271
Improv is really just practiced licks/concepts. As you learn licks/theory/lead voicing/etc, your ability to improv will improve. Practicing playing over tunes/changes you know will help, as will practicing licks and such. Even writing solos and practicing those solos will help as improv is essentially writing/composing solos on the fly. "Improv" is a lot of practiced concepts/theory and muscle memory.
>>
>>70483550
>lead voicing

I mean voice leading. I've been drinking.

Also, to expand on the writing/composing aspect of solos, learning to write/compose solos that use certain ideas, for example "targeting" certain notes, will help you understand those concepts and help you apply them when you have to truly improvise.
>>
>>70482764
That's going to be the case with every SG. It's just a fundamental design flaw/downside. The fadeds are just generally poor quality and overpriced for what they are. My Korean Gretsch I paid $300 for plays better than any contemporary cheap Gibson I've tried.

The company has been going down the drain for years for a lot of reasons and honestly deserves to fail. I guarantee you'll be happier if you look around your area for a deal on one from the 90s or early 00s instead.

>>
>>70483698
>What's the best way to go about doing this?
pick a random note every day and spent 15 minutes memorizing the locations. there should be ~12 locations per note depending on how many frets you have.

eg C# is on E @9 and 21, A @ 4 and 16, D at 11 and 23, etc etc

12 notes, 12 days to go through each. it will take a few times before you get it down. another good way is to improvise and say the note you play out loud as you play it, that will help build associations between notes and locations.

I don't think the gimmick would wear off that easily if you're creative and use the instrument in less conventional ways.
As a bass though, I agree there's not much of a point to it.

I still want one.

The semi hollow with piezo also looks fun and might be an alternative to an upright bass for people who don't have the room/money for one.

Why are their basses so much more interesting than their guitars though ? All that's new for guitar is some finishes.
>>
>>70484117
The 2 glaring things for me are the width of the neck without any extended range, and there no low E on the fretless side. Honestly, to me at least, it would make a lot more sense to just have 2 4 string necks, then you would only reap the benefits of having a fretless and having a 4 string(neck not as wide, more space between strings) and itll only look a little goofier. I mean, im sure someone could take full advantage of it, but i cant thing of a single time where i thought that id benefit from going between fretless and fretred in the same song. I dont know, all i can say is it would hinder me more than it helped.

>>70484117
This looks pretty cool actually, Id have to play one first but I think Id like to have this in my arsenal. They work harder on their basses I think because people from all styles of music use them, theyre not in as much of a niche as their guitars. I own an sr505, best bass Ive ever played. I use it for everything, dad rock, jazz, hip hop, motown, metal. Ive seen countless different people playing ibanez basses.

Nothing's stopping you from stringing it differently

>but i cant thing of a single time where i thought that id benefit from going between fretless and fretred in the same song. I dont know, all i can say is it would hinder me more than it helped.
I'm thinking two handed playing, root on one part of the neck and melody on the other side. Niche as fuck but it could be interesting.

>I own an sr505, best bass Ive ever played. I use it for everything, dad rock, jazz, hip hop, motown, metal. Ive seen countless different people playing ibanez basses.

Ibanez is for 15 year olds who post videos of themselves playing generic metal riffs really fast on youtube.

Unless you love metal you'll be happier with the ultraswede. That guitar has a good mix of high output sounds for heavy stuff but you can dial it back to play something a little more classy when you feel like it.

And if you do want a metal guitar I'd recommend the Dean Dave Mustaine line. I don't personally listen or play much metal at all but I had an opportunity to buy one of these direct from the factory at a massive discount (60% off GC list price) and its honestly one of the best guitars i've played. The neck shape is what really is perfect, its some kind of Dave Mustaine custom shape and its a set neck at all but the lowest price point.

If you want the super strat shape the Schecter line up is also better IMO because they give you all the fancy custom parts, coil tapping, etc. so you can buy a metal guitar that does metal but also can do other stuff.

So if you are set on those 3 go with the hagstrom. Otherwise I'd look to something other brand.

Schecter started as a Fender parts company that made pick ups, bridges, tuners, necks etc. in the 80s and they were 10/10. Many artists were buying fender and swapping in the schecter shit right away.

In the 2000s the ESP guy bought schecter and started making low tier to mid tier guitars in korea.

The idea is to give the customer a 'custom shop' platform and assemble it in korea, bring it over to the US.

For about the first 10 years they were pretty great stuff. You could buy a guitar wtih the floyd rose, fancy wiring, like coil tapping, passive/series switching etc, and random pickup configurations. Want a piezo semi-hollow superstrat? Gotcha covered. They had good well rounded guitars with 'diamond series pickups' that basically everyone would replace right away with whatever they wanted. They picked up Robert Smith from the Cure and other great bands.

Then they signed AX7 and had HUGE success and reformatted the company to be a metal focused company.

Now its more metal than 'custom shop' style in sales. The custom types are now narrowed down to a small page on the website called 'retro' and the rest is different tiers of metal guitars.

Which is a shame, their forte was you could buy a fancy version of any guitar you wanted with decked out parts for a great price.

Now they are really just a metal company.

I've owned several schecters.

The bass guitars they make are 10/10. The one I had was great, you could dial in any sound you wanted on the pick ups, and split the humbuckers to do jazz/precision/or musicman. I replaced with a Jaguar Bass and regretted it ever since.

I have an RS-1000 acoustic instrument from schecter and its very nice, has a loud bright sound that could compete with the $1000+ guitars but for one problem, the wood isn't totally dead and in the winter when the air dries out if I don't keep it humid the neck warps at the 13th fret b string and no longer is playable unless you humidify it or turn the truss rod.

Anyone got any idea what guitar this is?
>>
>>70487336
Its an electric 6 string
>>
>>70487315
which Schecter bass did you own? I have played the 5 string Model T and it was like a revelation, I had an "oh...oh holy shit" moment like the first time I played a premium Ibanez.
>>
>>70487315
I've also had an Omen 6 which is an entry level super strat, and it was a very nice guitar and most people thought it was much more expensive than it was but this was before they redid the brand to be a metal company.

In summary I think the company has been better for anyone who isn't metal. The older guitars usually punch a tier above their price range in quality. Recent guitars are really just metal guitars though. The old appeal is only available on a few lines that most guitar shops don't carry.

The new metal guitars do have a great neck 'ultra-thin' profile that I really like.

The bass guitars I've played by them are all really really good. In fact I'd buy the Model T over the $2000 flagship Fender anyday.

They also recently started to make pick ups which are very high quality (different than the diamond series in the cheaper lines).

They also now have an American factory that does mod shop stuff in their more original style of aftermarket parts I've played some at a store and am considering buying one over a Fender US strat but I havn't decided. But this in in the $1500+ range
>>
>>70487141
>Can't do strat sounds, can't do metal sounds.
I can do both. On my GIO.
You've gotta plug it into an amp though, it's not a magical device.

>>70487247
Ibanez got a shitty reputation because of the GIO line.
The only thing they need is to step it up and change a little bit their guitar models, they've got too many similar versions of the RG that aren't really different between each other.
Also >>70487270 is right, their SR line is great. Can't tell about the BTB but I've heard some really positive things about it too.

played that guitar in red the other day. if it wasn't so clearly jack white's signature i might want to go for one. even though is sounds great i feel goofy

also, urgent help:
i picked up some old Antares guitar (korean budget guitar from 80's) but the pickups are showing age aka the neck pickup is broke and the bridge is meh

i need new pickups and a replacement for this screw... or do i just do the old "shove paper in with the screw" trick?

I owned the first line of ultrabass the Tbird style mahogony with the thru neck. Best guitar i've ever owned.

I also own a BASS VI's from Schecter. Which, currently make the bass BASS VI's you can buy if anyone is interested.
>>
>>70487247
Like any big company they have good stuff and bad stuff. They have people that worship whatever they do, and they have people that shit on everything they do. That being said Ive never played a dean that i loved. Ive played a few ibanez's i really liked, and i love a lot of their basses. If you dont like thin necks you wont like most ibanez's. Its entirely down to personal preference.

>currently make the bass BASS VI's you can buy if anyone is interested.
Ibanez has the SRC6 (which is HH so it's less of a traditional Bass VI) and there's the Squier (>squier bla bla) one too.
Also I'm not sure but I think I saw something about a Fender signature whoever bass VI in NAMM 2017 ?

Dropped 5 years of piano and got a bass about two years ago. Been steadily learning how to play it and just got one of these. Did I made the right choice?, any tips for it?, any precautions I should have apart from electric input?

I've been having fun with it playing Knights of Cydonia and some Queen's of the stone Age stuff

Confused little black man. Playing the piano was cultural appropiation and felt wrong. But seriously, I like bass more than I like piano.

>>70487856
Was thinking of that but decided to get an overdrive first. I think I have to wait a little for that. Don't have the money and I'm happy with what I have at the moment.

What gear do I need to record a few demo songs between myself and a drummer in a tiny garage?
My phone has been somewhat sufficient but the levels are far too high and the sound is muddy
pic unrel
>>
>>70486049
You put the blade of your hand on the live section of string, close to the saddles, while you pick. Exactly how close to the saddles is a matter of taste; farther from them (closer to the nut) is a more aggressive mute.
>>
>>70488317
you could get yourself a decent usb mic like a blue snowball and just record it right into your pc

they cost like 40 bux
>>
>>70488350
I'm not on an incredibly low budget
a place near me rents equipment for rather cheap
I just need names of the gear that would be used, as I have no real clue
>>
>>70488376
then go do your research like everyone else who's ever recorded has done and stop expecting some kids on 4chan to spoon feed you like a retarded baby

I've been looking for weeks, I don't have a fantastic computer and I'd likely be using a laptop so going full digital could prove to be an issue

I don't really do that though. The guitar is shitty I'll give you that but I bought it a long time ago before I knew what a good guitar was. I have an amp and some other stuff too. It just sucks because I am basically giving the shit away and I still can't do that. If I can't sell anything I will have to leave it behind when I move. I don't want to do that but I don't have a choice.
>>
>>70480544
Just play to have fun. Get into different styles that you normally wouldn't play, maybe some ethnic flavors. Play along to songs to train your ear
