Gaza - No Absolutes in Human Suffering
I also listened to He Is Never Coming Back from them yesterday and it was good maybe even great, need a couple more listens.
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul is a good album but it's debateable if it's metalcore or not.
Converge is a pretty obvious choise. Jane Doe and Axe to Fall are my favorites.

As for bearable metalcore, I've found early Killswitch Engage, Northlane, and Walking With Strangers did not totally suck.
>>70431740
death/black/doom with some thrash and heavy and the outlier power/prog poster. Death/black was still pretty trendy with all the caverncore stuff. dmshareguy comes in with death metal sharethreads to the board in general which bolsters dm posting but eventually becomes ""music-positive"" inviting djent posting which slippery slopes into generalized shitposting and it's been a downhill slope from there. Thanks mate, I got three or four other songs waiting to be recorded. I did listen extensively to Terminal Redux this year so I'm actively trying not to copy their stuff too much but it can't be helped. There's a lot of Priest, Accept, Megadeth or Coroner ripping off going on in my songwriting, we'll see how it plays out in the long run. Good/bad thing about our town is it has next to no thrash scene but a gazillion stoner/core bands so it'll be a bit easier to stand out.

Probably my favorite folk metal band
Moonsorrow are the only band that comes close to being as Epic
Also Saor
Is Katatonia the only band that got softer over time and didn't get shit for it
Guys, you better fucking help me, or imma shoot you
So this is not metal, more like rock-opera without a penis, but that's not the point.
You know how story in dear hunter albums develops throughout 6 albums, not only every song in an album tells the same story, but all 6 albums do.
So what i am asking for is something like this, but /metal/ related, where the story stretches further than 1 album, where there are musical references here and there all the way, etc.
If you will think about something not-metal related, it works too.
>>70433815

>>70433750
Accoridng to Metallum the most similar bands are Mael Mórdha and Bathory
>>70433841
I was hoping for a black-metal-ish bands, or death, or something like that.
Speaking of sabaton, i did not really listen to them, but as far as i know the albums only share the setting of the war, songs are not connected 'story-wise', only thematically.
Terminal redux, being the meme it is, is a good example of what i want, but the story starts in that albums and it ends in that album, not exactly the thing i'm looking for.
>>70433893
>Mael Mórdha
Oh yeah forgot about those guys, they're pretty much an exact copy and I love it. They even have one collaborative song on a Primordial album
>Bathory
Great band but not really the same. I don't think I've ever met a single metalhead who didn't like Bathory
>>70433896
Obscura are doing some concept thingy with their last three albums and the one they will be doing this time. But it's not a storyline.
>>70433893

The most pathetic tab on the whole site. Most of the bands that are "similar" to the band you were looking at, end up being the most well-known bands of the genre that band belongs to
>>70433815
If you can stomach corny japshit, there's Sound Horizon who do gay prog rock/pseudo-power metal, all of their albums have one of the most autistic storylines I've ever seen and it's all vaguely connected.
>A Russian millionaire named Alexei Romanovic Zvolinsky achieves his lifelong dream to unearth physical evidence to the Elefseya legend he heard as a child. Eventually, with the support of his wife Eirene and his men, Zvolinsky unearths a pillar.
>According to the Elefseya, the world was created by the goddess of destiny Moira and the Muses. Soon after the world's creation, a pair of twins are born to Queen Isadora of Arcadia with the boy destined to become a vessel of the god of death Thanatos, the son of Moira who desires to remake the world in his image. Sent away to be raised in the countryside of Arcadia, Elefseus and his sister Artemisia grew without a care in the world until one day when their adoptive parents were killed by an Arcadian general named Scorpius and he sells them into slavery in the Kingdom of Ilion. As Artemisia was brought by courtesans named Cassandra and Melissa, Elefseus is placed to build Iilon's wall and begins to see shadows swarming over those destined to die soon while abused by the sadistic high priest Nestor. In time, while planning to escape, Elefseus begins to hate the gods and fate. Eventually, saving Artemisia from Nestor, Elefseus is reunited with his sister as they and another slave child named Orion escape captivity on a boat before the three are separated during shipwreck. While a blinded Artemisia washes up on the island of Lesbos and taken under the sybil Sophia, Elefseus becomes an apprentice to the blind poet Milos as they travel across Greece to find his sister until they came to the ruins of the youth's home town. Parting ways when Milos ends his services to him, Elefseus is advised to go to the island of Lesbos where an old friend of Milos resides who could ease his heart.

>Years later, under Sophia's guidance, Artemisia has grown into a young woman who can read the stars to know the future. Though concerned by foreboding events relating to herself and her brother, Artemisia accepts her fate has in store when she offers herself as a sacrifice in place of Phyllis. By the time the youth Elefseus grew into arrives to Lesbos, he finds Artemisia dead as he is slowly consumed in utter hatred and embraces Thanatos's temptation to enact revenge on those who wronged him. Killing his former slave masters in Ilion, now going by the name of Amethystos, Elefseus gathers an army of slaves and begins a campaign before confronting Prince Leontius of Arcadia, killing him and Isadora. Horrified upon hearing that Isadora is his true mother with people dying around him, Amethystos fulfilled his predestined fate as the vessel of Thanatos as he opens the Gates of Hades before confronting Moira. However, the tale ends there unresolved. As Alexei muses on how the epic battle between Thanatos and Moira may have ended, Eirene arrives to reveal that she is pregnant with twins, the couple unaware that they are being followed by Thanatos's shadowy minions.

So yeah, you either get bands that everyone already knows sound similar, or you get a result that REMOTELY sounds like the band you listen to, like A SINGLE FUCKING RIFF or maybe a solo/vocals
>>70434060
Fine, I concur, it can be good for finding some hidden gems, but what about when I want to really find something that sounds similar to what I'm already listening to? Demilich and Rivers Of Nihil, for example, could both be described as technical death, yet they sound absolutely nothing alike, so if one was in "similar bands" tab of the other, I would be kind of disappointed because they are not similar at all
I guess what I'm trying to say is, there is no standardized criteria about what makes something sound similar to something, which causes hit-and-miss when searching, which in turn makes "similar artists" kind of redundant (the point about hidden gems still stands though)

There's also Funeral, but they're very much in the Romantic-esque tragic spirit of death-derived doom, and Unholy has that extra-corporeal quality of otherwordly weirdness that makes albums like Obscura, Fas[...] or Ordo Ad Chao so memorable.

I find that majesty and harmony often have a strict and almost militaristic air to them. Makes me think of empires and roman architecture. How about Funeral Black à la Nortt? I mean yeah the Sleep worship on that track is pretty strong but I definitely think they incorporate sounds and ideas that separate them from just Sleep worship throughout most of their material, in fact I don't think most of their work is that similar to sleep

>Here, they've basically watered down the formula, or rather pacified it to the degree that the music has become more accessible. That's not inherently a bad choice, knowing just how chaotic they had seemed up to its release, but somehow Ulcerate have managed to leech all that terror and tension out of their music. The influence of drone, post-hardcore and sludge have crept forth into the compositions, and thus this feels like a more excitable alternative to Neurosis or Isis with a drummer who can mete out more strikes per minute than those acts have on entire albums.

Is Desultory a good choice for a fan of non-Gothenburg melodic death?

On Vermis, Ulcerate once again fool the gullible into thinking that “if it’s needlessly discordant and has growls on it, it’s the NEW and EVOLVED death metal,” only it’s not that apt. Underneath all the wankery, you’ll discover the songs never really go anywhere beyond the idea established in the beginning. All the superficially chaotic sounds render a meta-atmosphere of insanity through discordance, but the one fixed mode of expression this dwells in makes it all very obvious by the first track’s conclusion.

Thank you, any other recommendations like Desultory or any of the sort?
I just randomly remembered that Desaster exists

Already know them, very good
Thanks for the recommendations, those that are not for starters are also viable, I live in a country where you can hardly find any metal and when you do, it costs an arm and a leg, so please, give me more!

Ceremonial Oath and Gates Of Ishtar sound like early Gothemburg but done well. You might also like Sacrilege (from Sweden) and Eucharist
>Vektor – Black Future: Hipster music. I say that because it’s dressed up (ironically) like Voivod worship on the outside, but it’s pure aesthetics; there is no understanding of the composition or content that made Voivod great. Instead it’s standard war metal, slowed down by 1/4, played with some of the chord voicings Piggy used. Songs are standard format, very busy with lots of chaotic drums and messy riffing, but no concepts that tickle the brain or even amuse the gut. On the surface, it’s Voivody. Beneath, it’s the standard punk/metal/rock that hipsters like, dressed up in a unique way. Watch this band disappear quickly.

>>70429343
I have a lot of dadrock and prog, am a hella casual hip-hop/rap listener and I like some punk, but metal is a great majority of my library
>>70436018
It's not the normal fans it's the hipsters that like them because they're "evolved" and are "pushing the genre's boundaries" or something like that
>>70436061

Stockholm Syndrome
I want to go back to the halcyon days of a better general long removed, I want to experience the sweet honeydew taste of nostalgia dance on the palate of my mind as I eagerly scroll through threads with the hopes of initiating conversations with anons who are equally as eager to be here, but alas that is not the reality of my situation. No matter how bad it gets I'll probably always come back, like a battered wife trying to convince herself that the abuse she suffers is due to a momentary period of stress at the nadir of her husband's life, and that she'll only need to endure the agony for a short nondescript amount of time until their relationship returns back to form when they were lovestruck youths who lived in a world of sunshine, marigolds, and hummingbirds. Though no matter what mental gymnastics I'll use to justify why I remain in a place that can merely stave off boredom on a good day, I'll always be here because as the saying goes, "Don't forget you're here forever". No other place will offer me as much enjoyment as /metal/ in respect to talking about the music I like on the internet, friends are few and far between and friends that whose tastes actually overlap with mine (9 out of 10 times deathcore and djent seem to be the only genres in metal they think exists and the other odd 1 has taste that is too "intelligent" for my primitive preferences) seem as easy to find as an oasis on the sun. I tolerate this place, and even though I've left (each time telling myself this would be the last time) I still come back running like a dog who got out through a hole in the fence only to realize dinner's in an hour. Maybe I'm a flagellant for the bottom of the barrel scraping shitposting that /metal/ has devolved into, but it could be a lot worse.
