This album is probably the worst album I've had to suffer from last year. It's over two hours of generic symphonic metal with too many ballads about a bad star wars / game of thrones fan fiction

Even worse is that I had to listen to it multiple times since I wrote an article about it. Not worth it at all
>>
Is this a new album? I havent heard this one

I quit after their S/T album, it was painfully generic. I know Portnoy is a meme himself, but at least that guy seemed to be awake and semi-passionate about what he's doing.

I like Ladybaby but they are a blatant ripoff of Babymetal. Babymetal was actually created by a legit metalhead who cares about it, Ladybaby was literally created by a clothing company to sell their brand, and they actually propositioned the guy (Ladybeard) with "It will be like Babymetal, with you in it!"

Anyway, I don't take it out on the members and I think the music is fun but it does get annoying when a lot of times Babymetal is brought up and then "Ladybaby is better than this fake shit xD!"

They aren't the same group anymore btw. Shady stuff happening, the guy left and now they are literally called "The idols formerly known as Ladybaby".

Pic related is the guy behind Babymetal. Lmao at the people who think it's some corporate suits behind it. Metal doesn't sell shit in Japan, the average person doesn't even know what metal is.
>>
>>364445438
So you decide to talk about a crappy band that's symbolic of everything that is wrong with "progressive" and "technical" music. At least the turn based crap is game related.
>>
>>364445558
>Anyway, I don't take it out on the members and I think the music is fun but it does get annoying when a lot of times Babymetal is brought up and then "Ladybaby is better than this fake shit xD!"
Like I said, I didn't know Baby Metal was a "real" band, thought they were a joke band like Lady baby.
After hearing Tales of Destinies, I realize I'm wrong and will try listening to some of their other stuff.

But it's clearly a modified Dance of Eternity, but that's a good thing
>>
>>364441229
Jesus Christ DT, what the fuck are you doing lately? I had to block the Astonishing from my memory when it came out. I almost wanna say they're making this kinda shit because Portnoy left but they've dabbled in it before this and A Dramatic Turn of Events was a good album without him. Oh, I wasn't talking about you. Depends what you mean by "real". The girls don't write the music(except for one song the two younger girls have writing credits), but they do have input on everything and have come up with stuff on their own. They aren't puppets and they aren't being exploited. There is a small dedicated team behind it all, it's much easier to swallow when you look at it as the producer's band and view Babymetal as one big passion project. Plus, they are blunt about it. They aren't trying to fool anyone.
https://youtu.be/58-YZpHijDM?t=4m35s

One thing I love about them is that both albums have such a wide array of subgenres. The one I showed you is their only progressive song. They have ska, viking, power, death, djent etc. songs just on their last album. Their first album was even more varied and a lot poppier.

I really don't think it's a cash grab. If you watch interviews with the band, Petrucci especially, they are really sincere in that they think they have created the next Star Wars or Lord of the Rings with this album and story. There is only one good metal band with initials DT
>>
>>364454979
You clearly don't understand how the musical industry works and what makes metal bands so special.

Metal bands usually struggle to live out of music because they do everything by themselves for about 5 - 10 years before big gigs. After that, they pay money to contract big producers which allows the band to make a contract with big record labels. but this requires better mixing and mastering on his records.

Babymetal follows the "pop artist" formula, which is basically another person's project, a money-maker. The three girls you see on stage are just a remunerated face. Hence the different aspirations.

As i said before, i don't see it as a bad thing. but it's clearly a big difference.

>>364455987
But they weren't formed with a silver spoon like pop artists. They had such a shitty budget that they had to wear personal clothes and share with staff members. Nobody expected shit of them. He took a huge risk with the project. They started playing to small groups of ~20 people and they've done 100s of performances already. They've played at major metal festivals at 14 fucking years old knowing that a lot of people hated them and said they would throw stuff at them and turned crowd after crowd. There's a reason why their peers respect them. They worked their way up. They also don't do any advertising in Japan. No commercials, no tv appearances. Everybody does that there if they can. He didn't even want to do any western interviews at all but he was begged by their UK promoter. There are plenty of examples of these kinds of things.

You're looking at everything so stereotypically and black and white. The guy in charge has the same aspirations that metal bands do. This is his life's achievement and his baby. He has his hand in everything and will stick to his vision over popularity. In fact a lot of Babymetal fans hate him because they think he is slowly killing the poppy aspect and trying to make them full blown metal.

I agree. Everything is a big risk in the music industry.

> They started playing to small groups of ~20 people and they've done 100s of performances already.

Just like every pop artist. Correct me if I'm wrong, but i think they were part of an "Idol" group in Japan, and those groups are basically products of Japanese talent agencies. They're probably still part of another agency.

I don't think there's a single metal band with a record label contract and a talent agency support from the beginning. And that's the difference with Babymetal, they're just a product of "Amuse", which doesn't imply that their music is bad in any way.
>>
>>364458325
It's not Visions but it grew on me.
>>
>>364458441
Amuse has talents ranging from models, actors, comedians etc and genuine musicians who formed on their own and have full control. 99% of artists have some type of support system like Amuse provides. To Amuse, they are a product as much as any metal band is to a record label/promoter. Koba is still in charge though, and it's not that for him. That idol group they were a part of isn't really a group more as a grooming program for young talent they scouted to make it in the entertainment business once they "graduate". The lead singer was a standout singer at a prestigious academy in Hiroshima since she was like 7 and it was all formed around her when Koba witnessed her.

He got a group together just like anyone else. A lot of bands do auditions for random people who never contribute to the creative process or take someone from another band, why is this so much worse? As long as the girls care about their group that's all that matters. And they do have input.

Just realized you daid had a contract from the beginning.

Technically they didn't. That group they were a part of was the main group. Babymetal was just one of various subgroups. It wasn't even officialy a group until it picked up steam and broke off to form its own thing and got a record label deal.

It's more similar to someone in an acting school getting picked to do a broadway show and then getting a contract for a role after impressing execs.

Is it good?

Not sure what about the album as a whole isn't clicking with me. It is an awesome album, but most of the songs don't seem to have any good staying power.

The Architect is top 5 song of 2016

>Amuse has talents ranging from models, actors, comedians etc and genuine musicians who formed on their own and have full control.

like Disney

>Koba is still in charge though

Yes, because it's his project. He's the producer, and that's what i refer to when i said "Babymetal is another person's project". You know, there's a difference in the path between bands like Gojira or Meshuggah and Babymetal; they're not part of talent agencies or other person's projects.

>He got a group together just like anyone else.

That's totally different. you're describing bands like NIN or Porcupine Tree, where a musician hires others. But Babymetal is more like a corporate project.

>like Disney
Like literally every band/artist you know. My sister is in a PR agency in NYC and they have clients that are members in bands representing themselves, not their band. That's everyone's goal(although a bit different in this age with youtube and shit), the girls put in the work to get noticed just like these people did.

>But Babymetal is more like a corporate project.
Repeated shit I already told you was bullshit. Koba is more authentic than the majority of artists out there.

>>"None of the three members knew what metal music was before the inception of the band"
No shit, that is literally the most basic knowledge. Three 10 year old Japanese girls didn't know what metal was when they were asked if they wanted to be a part of it. Who woulda thunk? I already said in a previous post that metal is dead in Japan and the average person couldn't tell you what metal is.

If Koba is authentic, and it's his group, then how is it so different? Would it be just fine if he was in the band himself on stage? That's the only difference.

http://www.antimusic.com/news/14/August/ts22Marty_Friedman_Praises_Babymetals_Mix_Of_Meshuggah_With_Japanese_Pop.shtml

Also side note. I saw Gojira and Babymetal both at a metal festival in the summer. Babymetal got at least 5 times the crowd and way more rabid crowd with constant mosh pits, crowd surfing, and walls of death. Gojira were really good though.

>>364462164
I'm with you man, first time I listened to DT '13 I enjoyed it cause it was in the background while I was doing some work.
Then I actually ((((Listened)))) to it...
I think, it's because they had something to prove, like "Hey guys! look at us! even without Portnoy, we're faster and better than ever, look at all our elaborate machine-like drums and complex stuff all around! Don't worry, just keep buying our shit like always!
Needless to say, I fucking hate to say it cause it makes me sound like a Portnoy fanboy but DT hasn't been the same since he left. Coming from someone who bought Images and Words back in 96 and was hooked since.

I agree, Portnoy is better than Mangini. Not just in a technical sense, I think Mangini is one of the fucking fakest people I've seen ever. If you've ever seen the little audition show for selecting a new drummer you'll see what I'm talking about. I know people that went to Berkley while he was a teacher there and say that he was a tremendous asshole off-hours. The only people he acts all cool and friendly with are people higher than him in the industry and his students.

I'm glad someone else thinks awake is a meme album, everyone rides it since its one of the "oldies". It was mediocre back when it came out, everyone used to think so but no one said so because you'd be called a pleb.

Systematic Chaos is an alright album, if anything, its worth a listen.

good choice, however I disagree.
I think Dance of Eternity is their best song, when i think DT i think DoE.
then again theres good stuff all over the place Like Octavarium and Spirit Carries on.
Can I count 6 degrees side b as one track? if so thats pretty close too.
>>
>>364464128
you're literally describing why Babymetal is a corporate project. They didn't make the band in their fucking garages, they were contacted by petition because Koba wanted to make an idol-metal project. months later they where playing at big gigs because they had the resources and contracts to make it through. That's no fucking different than your average k-pop project (ignoring the musical genre differences, of course).

I don't know why is so hard for you to understand that common metal bands don't follow the same path as Babymetal. Normally it's a much harder path, of course, but it doesn't imply the product is better by any chance.

You know that fucking 10 yo don't make metal bands to play in bars at 2 AM, right? that's the selling point. They were part of a contract like pop artists.

>>364464474

>Babymetal got at least 5 times the crowd

i don't know why you think popularity is relevant on this matter. Bands like Gojira look for transcendence, not popularity.
>>
How little metal heads know about how much of it is fabricated and manufactured lol even at low levels.
>>
>>364465597
I'm pretty aware bout that. Most metal bands spend money on producers at some points of their careers. But comparing normal bands to an Idol project is absurd.
>>
>>364465534
There is a difference between corporate and manufactured doofy. So when someone like Corey Taylor who makes a side gig when he already has resources and fans to get it off to a great start make it corporate?

>months later
Years later. Their first music video got semi-viral in the west in 2011 due to metal websites uncovering it and going "wtf japan!" and they have been building slowly in the west ever since. Japanese fans said that they weren't even popular in Japan until recently. Seriously don't compare it to kpop at all. Shows how much you view things as the most basic level lol
>>
>>364462164
Uninstall
Awake is a classic, Mangini is better because he can focus on one thing for more then 5 seconds, you are just bitter because The Looking Glass and Build Me Up Break Me Down are medicine you can't stomach, [Insert Meme Here], you probably play League
>>
>>364466141
Corey Taylor's path was different. He is what metal heads call a "sell out", but his origin with slipknot was the same as every metal band you know, and different than an Idol project.

>Years later. Their first music video got semi-viral in the west in 2011 due to metal websites uncovering it and going "wtf japan!" and they have been building slowly in the west ever since. Japanese fans said that they weren't even popular in Japan until recently

don't you know how long it takes to a metal band to make it to the same stage? at least 10 - 12 fucking years. Babymetal's path is very similar to kpop groups, but of course, their products can be different.

>sell out
Jesus. Grow up.

Is it their fault they rose up that fast? Corporations can't force people to be famous. They got no hook ups from Amuse, just a small budget. Koba did everything himself. He had connections from being a well respected metal producer for a long time. How do you think he got some of the best musicians in the world to play the backing band? And kpop groups are all started with a silver spoon with top of the line production and they will be killed in months if they don't get ultra popular. That's exactly what happened with Pritz, who tried to copy Babymetal. They are also form 1-3 years before they ever debut with rigorous training to be "perfect" by the time they are unveiled to the public. Nothing like Babymetal or even Jpop.

Refer to this post >>364445558

That's his favorite band. Babymetal does a bunch of call backs and tributes to X Japan. Yoshiki loves them back and attended a show out the blue once and said multiple times he wants to collaborate. This album would probably make a good game.

>Warp Riders tells the tale of Ereth, an archer banished from his tribe on the planet Acheron. A hardscrabble planet that has undergone a tidal lock, which has caused one side to be scorched by three suns, and the other enshrouded in perpetual darkness, it is the background for a tale of strife and fantasy, the battle between pure good and pure evil.

>The story of Warp Riders, entitled "The Night The Sky Cried Tears Of Fire" (written by Cronise), follows Ereth as he discovers a mysterious orb and meets the Chronomancer, a being beyond time and space who enlists him in a quest to restore the planet's balance. Along the way he encounters strange warriors, mysterious witches, ancient androids, and a crew of space pirates with a vessel that will alter the course of history... a vessel known as, The Sword.

New wave is a punk sub genre (or vice versa the history behind it gets really weird). I think you'd be pretty hard pressed to say Talking Heads and The Clash are super similar.
>>
Metal is the ultimate nu-male repellant
>>
>>364493674
The Kotaku hate on /v/ is relatively recent. They were always mocked for being slower than places like NeoGAF and /v/, but it wasn't really taboo to post them up until a little before GooberGators came in and started shitting up 4chan.

Dream Theater haven't made a good album in 10 years.

Kicking out Portnoy was the biggest mistake ever.

Their past 3 albums have just been mind- numbingly boring wank fests

Octavarium is still one of my favorite songs

While I really do like that song, it does have some hokey lyrics with some odd vocal parts at times.
