Not exactly polishing a "turd", but I have this Yamaha TRBX 1005 fretless bass here, and I'm not sure if it's worth it to get the fingerboard leveled. The body is 5 pieces of alder, it's pretty heavy, the fingerboard is rosewood (I'd prefer ebony), the maple top is super thin, etc.
None of these are huge issues but should I sell it and get a bass that I'll be 100% happy with or invest just a bit more to make it "good".

What do you base the decision off of?
>>

You wouldn't... that's like the solitary thing where tab is better than notation (other than simplicity). But if you have both...

Whether a passage is playable in a certain position, what sounds best, what effect you're going for (open drone strings etc)
>>
>>70401079
Im sure it's to market to people that only know the tab, but if you know both it only benefits you. When they came up with notation, the majority of instruments could only play a note in a certain pitch one way. Guitar you can play a lot of notes in 6 places.

The a at the 17th fret would be notated an octave higher.

the part designation in the transcription is just an arbitrary by the transcriber.

>>
>>70400950
Basically its AMAZING for playing at low volume levels in home or recording for mimicking the way a tube amp will give the natural sponginess. However if you play with high gain pedals or fuzz chances are it's basically useless since you already get heavy compression from the distortion/gain effect.

to be honest I mostly didn't even like it until I stopped using a solid state and understood what compression does for me.
>>
>>70402224
>>70402276
And in this one are they both playing the same thing since the staffs on the notes are connected or are they separate again because of the slurs?

add11 is a type of chord.

It's also a separate guitar being tracked probably so i'm not too sure.
>>
>>70403045
So the actual staff is probably still the electric? Also, is a vibrato bar a whammy bar? If you don't have one on a guitar what are you supposed to do if the song calls for it? Can they be added onto any guitar?
>>
>>70403045

The recording is multitracked (lots of parts) and the tab book has tried to include EVERYTHING.

If you're just playing along by yourself, you may just want to switch to a clean tone to avoid an instrument change.

an 11th chord adds the 11th scale degree to the basic triad (1,3,5) this is similar to how 7th and 9th chords are made
>>
>>70403070
vibrato they mean is probably the finger vibrato not an actual whammy/trembar. Since it's Floyd it could also be the actual trem bar. Yes and no to the question about them being added, it's possible but difficult sometimes.

and you can switch to a clean tone instead but not sure about that capo thing.
>>
>>70403109
How did pink floyd play it live then? Did they just switch to clean tone or did they actually change over to an acoustic on stage?

Also, if 9 measures of the same note are tied together how do I keep the same note going for that long?

>>70403140
It specifies a vibrato bar dive instead of using the normal vibrato markings.
>>
>>70403109
>>70403140
>>70403190

Also, how do you switch to clean tone? By using pedals?
>>
>>70403190
Several guitarists and/ changing the arrangements to fit how many guitarists. I saw one video of Gilmour doing the Wall and there were two extra guitarists.

>>70403212
pedals, changing channel on amp
>>
>>70403212
Yes, or channel switching, or by rolling guitar volume back.

>>70403190
Then yes, if its dive its the bar.
>How did pink floyd play it live then? Did they just switch to clean tone or did they actually change over to an acoustic on stage?
multiple instruments and guitarist/instrumentalists.
>Also, if 9 measures of the same note are tied together how do I keep the same note going for that long?
hold the note till it dies off and count 9 measures. Listen to the song as you read the music and it'll help.

Also, I'm gonna be honest friend, I'm not angry or upset about helping you out a little bit but some of this stuff is Youtube-able or google-able.
>>
>>70403264
There are 3 Electric Guitars and 3 Acoustics specified through out the song. What kind of pedal would you use to switch to clean tone?
>>
>>70400941
Nah it's actually really good. But to me, head + cab + mic still sounds audibly better. Kempers and Axe FX is great for its consistency though, and we're finally at a stage where 99% of people can't tell the difference, so their use is undeniable.

There are 3 electric and 3 acoustic parts in the tab book, but they change the arrangement to fit the personnel they have - 2 acoustic parts might work just as well on one.

changing to a clean sound can be achieved by switching to clean channel on the amp or turning your distortion pedal off.

GEAR QUESTION HERE:

what is the point of overdrive pedals if your tube amp can break it naturally when you turn it up?

am i supposed to set my amp up for a clean tone and then use the overdrive pedal? is that the idea?

>>
>>70406821
>am i supposed to set my amp up for a clean tone and then use the overdrive pedal? is that the idea?

That's how most people use them yes. So you can go from clean to overdrive at the click of a button, also so you can put your gain sound before other effects like delay/chorus/reverb if you don't have an effects loop. You can also boost your amp's natural distorted sound if you want more overdrive for some reason.

I want to add some psychedelic guitars to my music so I guess I'm in the market for a phaser or something.

Anyone try out pic related? It looks pretty cool. I especially like the look of the dynamic mode.

Anything else I should look into?

Other things I'm interested in: tremolo and chorus

I remember seeing a video somewhere that pic related can do some chorus-y/tremish things if tuned in right, but can't remember where I heard that/if it's true
>>
>>70406821
Generally, a good clean tone is the DNA of great overdriven tone. Really, dialing in a great clean tone from the get-go will allow all of your other effects to be better supporting players for your sound than they would be otherwise (a solid clean sound from the amp with a little delay and chorus in the FX loop sounds absolutely PRISTINE). Insofar as why you'd want to use pedals rather than the amp's own breakup, it comes down to the fact that every amp is different: maybe your amp only has one channel and you play music that makes frequent use of soft/loud dynamics, maybe the amp's natural breakup or OD channel isn't overdriven ENOUGH for the kind of music you play, maybe a certain pedal just cuts through the mix the right way, etc.
>>
>>70407513
not the guy who asked the question origiannly, but i'm currently using a modelling amp (thr10) and wondering if it would be of any use to get a drive pedal

>You can also boost your amp's natural distorted sound if you want more overdrive for some reason

People don't put an OD in front of amp gain to get more gain, they do it to get a different sounding gain. Say you're using a 6505 and a TS-9. Maybe without the pedal you'd have the pre-gain on your amp set to 6, but the tone is a bit boomy and muddy. So you put the amp pre-gain to 3 or 4 and make up the rest with the level knob on the TS-9. Same amount of gain overall, but better sounding.

I wouldn't bother with pedals if you aren't playing through a tube amp. 99% of OD pedals are designed with tube amps in mind and I've never heard an OD pedal that didn't sound dry and flat in front of a modeling amp. If you decide to get one anyway, I used to use an EHX Pocket Metal Muff into my old Line6 Spider III practice amp, and it sounded okay for bedroom playing.

>>70408852
Any good exercises or videos to hone this skill? I'm self taught and Im currently just learning to read music and basic theory in order to prepare myself for a classical guitar class I'm taking in the fall. Will I just learn hybrid picking there or should I keep learning as far as I can on my own?
>>
>>70408898
I'm so doing that.
>>
>>70408898
Hybrid picking depends on picking first, which you'll never learn in a classical class.
I barely use it but I learned it from myself, it's not a very complex technique. You pick and you use your nail/fingertip kinda like a claw. In that lick it's even easier since your picking should go down, up, and then you can pull up some more to get the note two strings above.
>>
Does it ruin it for anybody else when you see a guitar you like while shopping but it has a fucking floyd rose.
>>
For people who want to learn guitar.

Get a teacher, just fucking get a real teacher already and stop trying to follow youtube videos. It's infinitely more efficient to be talking to people who've been playing for years than to be watching some guy do stuff on a video and not give you any feedback. Plus, if you're just a beginner, ask for a discount.
>>
>>70402109
Don't be an idiot, don't go out and waste your money on a guitar. Save up until you can afford some land, find yourself a more or less good wife and start a family.
>>
>>70408957
Too bad 99% of teachers teach you nothing but basic chords, rhythm and music theory instead of how to actually play anything
>>
>>70408957
Every teacher I've had has put me in the "let me print out some tabs and we'll play those" even when I ask to specifically learn theory, scales, modes, picking techniques, etc. Closest I got was a guy teaching me neo-classical and taught me what a key was and since then everything has been from books, ear and trial and error. I'll agree YouTube isn't the best but it's a good reference to see/hear how someone else does It

What do you mean, basic chords, rhythm, and especially theory is everything you need to start playing almost all music. By teaching this stuff, they are teaching you how to play and also compose.

posture and actual playing are more important, everyone can read about what is a key, what's a chord, how chord progression work on the internet.
>>
>>70409012
You mean play monotone pop songs that are about teenage drama and all have 4/4 beat
If you want to actually develop any skills you're better off learning how to play songs, starting out with slower ones and moving towards faster and more complex pieces
What's the point of playing guitar if you don't do anything fun with it, but just strum the same 4 chords for your entire life
>>
>>70408994
Yeah, there are a lot of teachers out there who are just downright shit. But if you can find one who actually listens to you and does what you want but also teaches you what you need to know in order to reach your goals your playing will accelerate 1000 times. And yes, youtube videos are a good reference point and good to broaden your horizons, but they are by no means a good substitute for a real person.
>>
>>70409028
I get what you mean now, by "playing" you mean things like technique. I'm sorry but if you've never had a teacher that takes time to teach you technique or even posture, you've had some pretty bad teachers.
>>
>>70409050
I've had 8 teachers from when I started at 11 till I lost faith in them at 17. If anything made me better was joining at band at 15 and pushing myself to be the most reliable player in the room. Now I'm still nowhere near that but I ended up 5 years later playing jazz bass in a touring band with a guitarist taught by a Berkeley alumni and a drummer taught by a Columbia professor since he was 6. What you learn from jamming with others is live experimentation, if you fuck up the others will trod on and you can pickup. Being part of the rhythm section you can steer the tempo, emotion, key, and rhythm by playing a few notes differently and seeing how if it works with the music you guys are creating. Trial in error in a scenario where your playing needs to fit with the others is crucial to the learning process, and even more when others are bouncing ideas back and forth and what you see or hear will be interpreted differently than the others

Everyone starts in the same spot. We all start learning guitar by learning wonderwall and smoke on the water. But that doesn't mean you'll be stuck playing that stuff for the rest of your life. I started learning classic rock songs, many of which only had a few chords to them. Even like you said, it's best to start out slow, and then gradually get to more advanced stuff. But just because the first 6 months of your guitar playing journey is mainly learning basic chords, strumming patterns, 4 chord songs does not mean that you will be stuck with that for the rest of your life.

Nope, the first song I learned how to play is Burzum - War

Then tell me where you are and what you want to learn for God's sake.
I can take you there, but there may be hurdles and other things we need to address first if you can't even communicate ideas with me properly.
>>
>>70409218
I just loved the riff, but I'm thankful that I started out playing fast, because if you start playing fast, slower songs will be a cakewalk for you

my old guitar teacher had a strat that was just amazing to play. you could just pat you finger down and a crisp bar chord would come out. on mine i have to press with ten times the force.
i lowered my action the most it would let me, but it's still no where near.

what makes a guitar feel that way? how do i geta guitar like that?
is it more the strings than the actual guitar?

Neck relief, frets, action, strings, nut.

Getting the mix of all these right is what will make it play right

what are the specifications of a fret?
what's a good fret from.. a bad fret?
i've always thought there was so little information on the actual fret

Height, thickness, profile, material.

It's a personal preference, though.

Some guys like big, chunky frets, others like smaller vintage style.

Play some guitars and work out what you like

That strat probably had tall vintage, which while thin are tall crowned.

One of those g400 pros replaced my mia tele as my main gigging guitar. I have the tele as a back up live and i use it a lot recording, but i play the g400 a lot more.

Taller frets are favored by shredders and tappers, it makes hammer ons and legato playing a bit easier and cleaner, but if you use too much pressure you can push notes sharp.

Smaller frets are supposed to be a bit slower, but more comfortable and easier bending.

I generally prefer smaller vintage frets, but I do have a couple of guitars with jumbos - it's not the thing I worry most about with my playing.

Here's a pic of mine. I love the way it feels. I wish I has the money to get an epi les Paul of similar value, but I've recently fallen on hard times. I kinda wish I got the pro with the coil splitting, but this was only $200.
>>
I mostly play grindcore/mathcore so I just use my HM2, hall of fame and sometimes my whammy for pedals. Anything else I should be considering to make it more interesting? I was thinking some kind of phaser or chorus for droney slow parts and show intros but I feel like there must be something I'm forgetting that could add something unique to the sound or make for more interesting interludes than just holding notes until the next songs start

its perfect. i have had a few guitars made for shredding in my time, but this one beats them all. i just wish the pickups were better and i could get the action lower.
>>
>>70410991
the action can be tricky because of the recessed neck angle, best to get it professionally set up
>>
>>70411002
i have it pretty low now. im just an action snob because on my poorfag dean, i have the action so low you can almost play a string by looking at it.

i could raise the tailpiece on the SG, but i think ill try a thinner set of strings before i start messing with it again. i have a set of .10-.46 on it now.

That giant pickguard is ugly as fuck. You know why fender uses big pickguards? To cover up shoddy, cheap, quick routing

It's not even a pick guard. It's a hole cover. What's a les paul without a pick guard? A les paul. What's any fender without a pick guard? A piece of wood.
