she sounds kinda like a moron desu
>>
what makes the SG better than the les paul for metal? assuming they have the same pickups?
>>
>>70411702
it looks more satanic
>>
>>70411702
since string tension/scale length/hardware is the same most of the time, literally nothing.
>>
Should I learn all the notes on the fretboard while I'm learning to read sheet music. I can see on the sheet music that I need to play a certain note but I don't know where that is on the neck. Seems like knowing the fretboard would help but the book never mentions it.
>>
>>70411702
probably because it reflects the gayness of metal
>>
>>70411685
Go down your local college music dept and ask around for anyone looking to gig. That's how I found my drummer.
>>
>>70411702
not that you can hear anything under the mountain of dogshit metal dudes have for toanz but SGs are more peaky in the upper midrange and have less bass response than a les paul

les pauls are better for metal imo with a tighter low end for stupid metal chugging
>>
>>70411685
Reminder that guitar is literally the worst instrument to play if your goal is to ever play in a band because you'll never stand out from the ocean of guitarists
>>
>>70411929
>T. Butthurt bedroom player
>>
>>70411929
not if you want to form your own band though, writing and singing your own songs

good luck finding one if you don't though
>>
>>70411799
>chugging
i dont do that gay shit. i like to play the old stuff like megadeth, iron maiden, pantera, w.a.s.p.
>>
>>70411702
Nothing does. The SG is the same as just about any HH config guitar, the pickups it ships out with aren't particularly suited to metal even if I quite like low output pickups for high gain shit. There's nothing giving the SG a leg up over the LP for metal.

>>70411799
>apply distortion
>??? suddenly EQ, response and pickup character go out the window

I would wager that distorted tones give a more vivid projection of the pickup's actual characteristics than the cleans do, which depending on amp and technique can sound much more homogenous, even generic.

>les pauls are better for metal imo with a tighter low end for stupid metal chugging

Did you forget to say "depending on pickups"? Because stock Gibbo configurations are rarely, if ever, tight. At any rate you sound like a faggot who doesn't know anything.
>>
>>70411751
Yeah. Do that. Learning anything never hurts. That applies to anything in life, if you're prepared to go down the rabbit hole
>>

>>
>>70412001
Still much worse to play guitar because you'll never find a rhythm section. If you play bass or drums and do it well, it's easy to find bandmates, and you'll be more valuable than the guitarist so it won't be hard to get your way. Being a guitarist is a good choice if you just want to do solo studio work, but if you're trying to join a group with it the odds are stacked against you.
>>

It doesn't matter what instrument you play if you can write your own music. He plays shoegaze meme shit anyway so he doesn't even need a drummer if he doesn't want to play live shows.
>>

How do I join or start a band?
I don't know anyone that plays instruments and feel not up to joining one cause I feel like I suck
what do?
>>
>>70411694
The Josh Homme one or the Dean Ween one. The guy who hosts it did something similar with Tosin Abasi, but I think its called something different. That one actually has some juicy information. Although the St. Vincent one had me cringing throughout its entirety.

Literally no reason for guitarists not to also own and play a bass. Develop stronger fretting, sense of timing and better understanding of what your rhythm section is actually doing and how to emphasize each other.

Friendly reminder that as long as you enjoy the stuff you are playing you are doing OK. Playing shoegaze is just as good as playing jazz as long as you are giving it everything you have.

Playing with other musicians is a skill on its own, and it's something everyone needs to practice. Sometimes you just have to go out there and suck so that you can improve. If you have friends that play instruments it would be better to go jam with them so that you can get better together with less judgement.

I need your help /gg/. I've been practicing guitar since October of last year, and I've gotten really good, and i want to buy an electric guitar. I want to start making big black inspired noise rock and possibly forming a band with some cohorts. I plan on Orange combo amp, an Interfax Harmonic Percolator, and maybe a swollen pickle mk ii or a boss ds-1. The only thing i'm unsure about is the guitar itself. I'm torn between a Shecter ATX C-1 and a Fender Stratocaster (and yes, i know it's a meme guitar). Currently, i have enough money for the strat and the amp, but i don't know if i should save my money or not. What do the guitarfags think?

tl;dr i've been playing guitar for 4 months and want to make big black-inspired noise rock and i don't know if i should get a Shecter blackjack or a stratocaster

G400 pro is the best budget guitar ive played in my 14 years. Its not in the same league as an sg standard, but for $1000 less who cares? Plays wonderful, try a bunch if you can, some have rough frets, but even those arent bad. Really playable, i got my action as low as my picks(tortex yellow) thickness with no buzz or other adjustments. Best stock pickups in a cheap guitar ive ever heard, dony expect high output though.

All guitars are memes here. A used strat will work for you.

3 single coils in a strat will give you a different sound than the 2 humbuckers in the shitter. The strat wont give you as thick distortion without more gain. The strat will also buzz a lot with more gain if you only have 1 pick up engaged. The way to get around this is to get a fat strat(bridge humbucker) or mod a strat to have 2 humbuckers(easy, some dollas and some solder).

As far as the ds1 or swollen pickle, theyre different sounds altogether. Ds1 is distortion, swollen pickle is fuzz which is more aggresive. For noise rock i would take a fuzz, itll make ugly chors uglier. The ds1 is also known to drop your signal a little, even at max volume. If youre on a budget you can get some big muffs for $40, the original swollen pickle was a slightly altered muff. The new one is basocally the same with 2 more knobs you dont relly need. Not saying dont get the pickle if you want it, but you can get the muff used to tide you over then sell it for the same price you bought it for.

Why are Dunlop primetone picks so much more expensive than their other picks? I got one in a variety pack and I really like it be it's $5 or more just for a 3 pack of them. Are they more expensive to make or something? They are really nice.
>>
>>70416406

i don't know about all of them but the jazz IIIs have a handmade bevel on them. They're nice overpriced imo, the material is just Ultex. They're trying to jump on the boutique picks bandwagon

Oh for fuck sakes. Invest a dollar in some 150 grit sandpaper and bevel it yourself.
>>
>>70416492
That's what I'm saying. I would get some finer sandpaper and polish to finish it off too.

Some higher end picks are worth the money because they use a special material but the primetone picks are the same as the cheap ultex picks.
>>
>>70416444
That's disappointing. I wish they weren't expensive they feel REALLY good to play with. I have the standard shape one in .96mm. I wish they made the primetone's in max-grip jaz iii. I might try just getting a 3 pack of the primetone jaz iiis with my order of the carbon fiber max-grip jaz iiis. But that .96 standard shape primetone feels great. I have a dremel I'll try beveling some ultex myself to see if I can get it to feel as good.
>>
>>70416316
Get a straight edge you dolt, you can get one thats good enough For under $4 at lowes or home depot.

And theres more to action than the truss rod.

Get neck straight
Lower action
Check for buzz
Find out cause of buzz
Fix by adjusting action at bridge or nut
If it cant be corrected level and crown frets or add relief to neck and readjust

If your truss rod gets tight before the neck is completely straight youre SOL unless you can replace the neck or replace the truss rod.

Dont just start turning the thing with no end point because youre getting frustated. Its not a magic wand, thats how people break them.
>>
>>70416444
Jazz III is nylon tho. Nylon has like a 3 month lifespan before it gets brittle and cracks. Also, the edge of nylon picks suck. Spend 3$ on a pick that snags strings unless you modify it is dumb

Even when I cover cafo with my friends I rip a nasty solo instead of his solo

African guitarists, bass and banjo players have been doing that for decades.

Just because he does it in a wanky way that sounds like shit doesn't mean its innovative.

Not exactly the same technique since he just slaps the note with his thumb and hammer on the rest of the notes while Tosin strum every note with the fingers on his right hand. Him and Tosin went to school together, so if anybody else would do it it's him. But Josh Martin is probably the best example of modern guitar playing you're going to get

I agree, the solo for infinite regression is good along with a couple of other tracks off weightless but he does repeat himself. It's not really "musical". It's just noise. It's like if a good painting is eyeball music, shoegaze would be a bunch of paint bullshit blasted all over a canvas. Sure maybe it took effort for the "artist" to blast the bullshit on there how he wanted it, and they could get good at blasting bullshit the way they want. It's just bullshit to someone that can paint like a cat or landscape or something, but others might see it as "art". Especially if they also blast paint on canvases, too.

5) practice position playing in the open position

the book says do 15 * 6 = 90 minutes of improv a day (it doesn't explicitly say that, but if you do the math it does) but i say fuck that and just do 15 minutes, and then i do another 15 of dedicated "focus work" on technical/theoretical stuff and then another 30 minutes playing my own songs or whatever i want for fun. the modes are C ionian, D dorian, E phrygian, F lydian, G mixolydian, A aeolian, and B locrian. you can look up those followed by "vamp" on youtube and you'll get some good backing tracks. quist jams are good but they're long, the book says 2-3 minutes per mode and go through every mode however you're improving. a lot of times i run over and do all 6 minutes on a video and i realize i ran over only when the video stops

doing that type of improv and get you better at learning the fretboard too, bc in all those modes they're modes of C, so all the proper notes you will be playing will not be sharps. just the natural notes

>>70423420
no you're not retarded, this is my second time reading it. no one's born knowing the terms, i had to look up all of them. it's advancing guitarist by mick goodrick (pdf is in the op, i ended up buying a paper copy bc it's more convenient to read). it's a DO IT YOURSELF BOOK fyi, and there's no tab in the book to speak of. he basically is like a wise sage that tells you what directions you should look but then you walk that way on your own and he's not there to help you get over obstacles. there's a lot of googling and research involved but it definitely broke me past the learning licks phase. i dont know nearly anything the book talks about, and he says even he hasn't scratched the surface of what he brings up in the book. also, it's an iterative book in my experience. if you see something that seems out of your reach, skip it and come back to it the next time you read the book

it doesn't tell you where to play stuff on the guitar bc it doesn't have tab, but it does tell you the notes. so i read it the first time and didn't get too much out of it, then i practiced learning score and i'm getting more this time

Try to eat more rice and vegetables, and drink more water. You'll feel fuller. Also, run for at least 20 minutes each day. If you can't run for 20 minutes straight, do 1 minute of running, 1 minute of walking, and alternate until you've built up the endurance.

Emotionally unstable, probably has depression, uses the endorphins that get released when he stuffs his face as a form of self medication.
It's the same pattern with most obese people.

Yeah, fuck me I suppose. But really, i lost a shitload of weight by cutting out doing fat fuck stuff. It sucks but eventually you feel better. No beers every day (i cut it out completely), only eating 1 portion instead of eating till i was stuffed. Drink more water. No soda. I just eat 3 normal size meals a day, and only drink water or seltzer, black coffee no sugar. I do eat donuts and cookies like a fat fuck still if someone gives some to us at work. Which happens once a month... still, Lost 70 lbs. In a year and a half. I'm active, but no dedicated exercise.

Is it easy to actually do merzbow covers with just anything?

I use a wah, a crate 17 wat, and a pedal that says deaths metal and has R.I.P, guts, pain, and scream as it's settings.

I feel like something is horribly wrong

Is it just my bass-playing autism or does that neck look microscopic? How does one even press down on only one string?

Am I doing something wrong playing with the groove resting on my left thigh instead of my right? I've never seen anyone playing with it resting on the left while sitting, but it feels so much more natural. Plus I'm 6'3" so my lanklet arms have no trouble reaching the end of the fretboard

Good one roman
>>
>>70424866

classical guitar position will always feel natural on most instruments, but bassists don't use it cause of the length of the neck

if you feel better that way just do it, nothing wrong with it

Yeah same
I like watching interviews with him because he is very insightful and seems like a cool dude

I don't really like his music much either (just kinda not my vibe) even though I can appreciate it and he is incredibly talented

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpPDFofXqsM

I like this one though, he uses some tiny bell and howell amp thats made for amping audio to go with the visual projectors
sounds really nasty

definitely super ry cooder stuff
kinda don't really like ry cooder either cept for the paris texas stuff and southern comfort soundtracks

Don't nfl running backs weigh like 240? If anything 210 is too light.

>but bassists don't use it cause of the length of the neck
I have my bass strapped in classical guitar position. It's not an issue.

Set goals.
Use a metronome.
Work on the stuff you can't play not the stuff you can.
Practise slowly and gradually increase speed.
Record yourself and work out what sound shit and practice that.
