If anon can't make a pentatonic sound good clean, no amount pedals will help. But of course, upon asking what, where and how to play to sound good, anon gets the proverbial "try it out with X piece of gear" response, which is this general in a nutshell: always more concerned about gear than actual music.

Any sympathetic vibrations felt by the neck will be dampened by the weight of the wood and the fact that you're touching the neck. Any residual sympathetic vibrations will have no effect on the vibrating string, and thus, no effect on the tone.

boost + high gain amp sounds better in most cases than a straight up distortion pedal, and will be more versatile.

>>
>>70068550
Do you take your guitar anywhere?
>>
>>70068587
Not quite. I'm a physics major though so I can enlighten you.

Different densities in wood affect how much string vibration energy is lost when you pluck a string. A higher density wood will reject the string energy transfer into the body/neck (this is called internal stress) and thus the string will vibrate longer. With that being said keep in mind two pieces of wood from the same tree would probably sound different due to slight differences in density. It would be very hard to attribute a sound to a certain species of wood.

Also keep in mind a higher density neck will resist the physical pull of the strings and thus stay in tune better. This can also be achieved with multi-piece lamination's which is common on 8 string necks for example.

When a manufacturer uses the misleading term "tone wood" they're really referencing a word that a luthier would use to describe a piece of wood that rings out a specific note when tapped. A piece of wood like this would usually be used for an acoustic rather than an electric guitar though.

Is the wood that your electric guitar is made of as important as your amp, pickups, etc.? Obviously not, but the idea that the wood used in an electric guitar has no effect on it's overall sound is wrong.

That depends, you're actually asking about overall stiffness. A solid maple neck may or may not be more stiff than a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard, but a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard is technically "laminated" and that should ensure stiffness.

As a rule of thumb you will get a sharper/brighter attack from a maple fretboard and a slightly darker, more round tone from a rosewood fretboard. Rosewood is an oily wood and that oil has a tendency to absorb certain frequencies and dampen the overall tone. Maple isn't an oily wood and is usually very stiff, but it shows wear easily.

Don't listen to the people who'll tell you fretboard material makes no difference, it's just a popular misconception that's taken hold on theinternet.

Well, it makes a difference if you can actually hear. Being able to hear is a prerequisite though.

That's one of the reasons I think this misconception has taken hold actually. There's a hearing loss epidemic among younger people now. I'm always shocked when I go the the theater and the sound is so loud, but they have to turn it up like that because young folks can't hear it if they don't.

I believe it when someone under 30 tells me they can't her the difference between a maple and a rosewood fretboard, it's almost certain they really can't.

Not necessarily. Inquisition and Bölzer sound absolutely massive live, and they're both duos.

What'll happen if you put a guitarist on bass is that you'll get someone without any kind of actual insight on what he needs to do. So either you're playing thrash metal and it doesn't matter anyways because he's just playing the guitar part, one octave down, or you're playing reggae and he's ruining the mood entirely.

Then year get a big muff, not a rat. Boss RV-5 is a pretty good reverb, and if you're trying to sound like MBV, get a digitech digiverb and put it before the muff on a certain setting. I won't tell you exactly what it is, but it's not reverse. After that you have all the basics really, it's just whatever sort of modulation you want. If you get more drive pedals, stay away from another mid humped like the rat or tube screamer. Most fuzzes are a safe bet, and the boss hm-2 is also good, but they're starting to get expensive.

it hides mistakes too much in all the vids i've seen

if it lets you, you should lower the actual guitar track volume to like 10% so you can hear your playing better

It costs money and isn't that accurate.
Recording yourself into a DAW along a track is better, you can go back in time and check if you're fucking up, you can lower the tempo, focus on one part, and so on. The only thing it doesn't have in comparaison to rocksmith is the scoring system, which I think is not really that useful.

Only part I don't understand is that when the string vibrates, it vibrates from the fret (metal) to the bridge (typically metal). How does the fretboard material come into the equation? I don't see how it can affect the vibrations pick up by the guitar's pick-ups.
>>
>>70071332
It has to do with sympathetic vibrations. It makes (almost) no difference. Things like cable quality and power supply are more important
>>
>>70071487

Yeah I can understand that, but I thought people were arguing it was more on that.

On that note, how big of a difference does body material and density make? E.g. a big mahogany body vs a slim, chambered ash body. I know lots of people say Wata of Boris says she gets her tone from her heavy as hell Les Paul, but I don't know.
>>
>>70071332
>strings vibrate/neck vibrates
>string/neck vibrations enter the body through the nut/fret/neck joint/bridge and the body resonates
>the various neck/body resonances/vibrations interact with the vibrating strings over the pickups
>the pickups translate these string vibrations that were affected by the various resonances/vibrations into an electrical signal

It's not really that complicated.
>>70071546
>denser heaver guitar = more natural sustain
It's more complicated than that but a 9 or 10 lb. Les Paul is a good place to start. Go to a store and pull a Tele off the wall with a single coil in the bridge, find one of those new Les Pauls with the splitable humbuckers and put it into single coil mode in the bridge, and see for yourself if they sound anything alike.

>It sounds weird to solo while hooked up to a scanning machine, but a few brave guitarists pulled it off and contributed a major finding to the science of guitars. Researchers found that, when a guitarist shreds, he or she temporarily deactivates the brain region that routinely shuts down when achieving big-picture goals, signalling a shift from conscious to unconscious thought.
>And when mere mortals (non-musicians) attempt a solo, the conscious portion of their brain stays on, which indicates that real guitarists are able to switch to this more creative and less practical mode of thinking more easily.
>All of the research makes it clear that guitarists are just super spiritual, intuitive people. Think about anyone from the Jimmy Page to the Edge right on up to Bon Iver. That sort of intuitive thinking runs all the way to how they learn. Unlike musicians who learn through sheet music, guitarists, according to researchers at Vanderbilt University, get a better grasp of a song by looking at someone playing it rather than reading the notes on paper.

lol, real guitarists don't even think when they're playing, it's all natural instinct you're either born with or not. This explains all the losers in /gg/, doesn't it?

>The intuition might come from one truth every guitarist suspects: Playing guitar transcends simple brain chemistry. Pat Martino, a jazz guitarist from Philadelphia, had 70 percent of his left temporal lobe removed when he was in his mid-30s due to a hemorrhage. When he came out of surgery, he couldn't play guitar.
>Within two years, Martino was able to completely relearn how to play jazz guitar. Scientists have used Martino's brain as an example of cerebral plasticity. For guitarists, Martino represents something else: Playing guitar isn't a skill. It's a way of being, a way of life.
fuck /gg/ can't even learn jazz guitar with their whole brain

>>70072195

>real guitarists
I think we all knew this. obviously if you're in your first day of picking up a guitar and you only know shape one of the minor pentatonic you're going to overthink the fuck out of it.

>That sort of intuitive thinking runs all the way to how they learn. Unlike musicians who learn through sheet music, guitarists, according to researchers at Vanderbilt University, get a better grasp of a song by looking at someone playing it rather than reading the notes on paper.

However this part seems to imply that guitarists, unlike other musicians can do this even if they are new. They learn this way by shutting off the conscious side of their brain to learn.

So its contradicting itself. do you understand?
>>
>>70072504
>seems to imply
Stopped reading right there. You're drawing baseless conclusions on nothing more than assumptions.
>>
>>70067472
make sure you're not just going up and down basic pentatonics, some people use it in really creative ways like eric johnson, or add in blues notes if its that kind of jam and then kind srv or jimi mayer sounding stuff and get the huge bends that sound really good in those scales. make the ascending/descending stuff creative with what notes you don't play and build tension

let's do a thing where we each follow each other where we left off, doing ~2 measures

here's what i came up with to start:

i know there's a lot of really good players in /gg/ so i think this could be fun to see the different skill levels

On most of my guitars I have .10 standard, but on my hollow body I have .12s.

Fun story, when I bought the hollowbody I took it to a local guitar shop on my way home to find out what size strings the old owner had, and he kept trying to measure with his micrometer, but was getting weird numbers. The moron was trying to measure it in metric instead of thousandths of an inch. kek

I keep going back and forth between the Nemesis and the DD-500. I think the Nemesis will be the best option for most guitarists, but I think the built-in editing on the screen of the Boss will give it the edge for my use.

I also plan on eventually getting a Strymon Mobius and maybe a Big Sky, so the DD-500 would be optimal for pedalboard aesthetics. It would be white, cyan, and blue similarly-sized pedals. Strymon should make a black or white version of the Timeline so it can match better with the other two big box effects.

just fuckin play all instruments and look for a band.

i'd happily play bass or drums in a band, even though i'm primarily a guitarist

bass is the most underrated instrument of all time. great basslines are so awesome and it's cool if the band knows that.

like "is this it" where the bassline is just crazy good and the guitar is kind of just providing some harmony.
