Guitar is fun

I posted this in the last thread and didn't get a response: Hello /mu/. I am a new bass player and I recently picked up my first decent amp. I got a fender rumble 25 and it worked perfectly for the first few days I had it. Then out of nowhere I started getting this weird static noise. It's not affected by turning contour or overdrive on or off and is present at any and all equalization settings. I even messed with all the eq settings on my bass and it is still there. Is it likely I broke something or is there a defect with the amp? Could it be my bass? I bought coverage/extended warranty with it when I bought it, so I can either get it fixed or replaced but I'd like to know what kind of issue I may be having.

Lots of Nirvana songs are quite easy, if a bit boring. Heart Shaped Box is good to learn imo, it is Drop D but I often just play it in E Standard and don't care about not having the low D.

Blackbird by the Beatles is pretty good, as is Julia, for fingerstyle. Try and play different songs that teach you different things, your right hard is just as important as your left, don't forget that.

I'd also suggest practice the major scale with alternate picking until you're sick of it. Music theory is really important for good playing and I'm kind of kicking myself for not learning it sooner.

It's 24" scale right? How are you finding that?

Looks great, though I'd prefer a maple neck.

Yes it is. It took me a little bit to get used to but now im liking it. Its easier to reach for noted i would usually be stretching for. I would also prefer maple but it doesnt come with it.
>>70056277
The higher frets are great the strings are much easier to bend which helps me keep them in tune.
>>
>>70056187

>>
>>70056310

I've been wanting a humbucker a guitar for a while now, and would like a shorter neck scale to get a rougher sound. Been debating between a Les Paul or a Mustang with humbuckers, love my Fender Strat and every Les Paul and other similar guitars I've tried feel and sound pretty average, but haven't tried a Mustang yet.

-record, play and practice my bass

Any objections?
>>
>>70056567

Nope, heard great things. Just, if you're getting a high output instrument in the future, you might want to invest in an audio interface (like the Scarlett 2i4) which has padding on the inputs to give it more headroom before the signal clips. You probably won't though, so should be fine. I love my Scarlett 2i2.

Never tried a mini-strat, but figured I might just like a Mustang because I love the feel of my Strat so much. It's just well made, whereas I've even tried a Gibson LP Standard at some ridiculous price, and found it to feel pretty average. It's probably just the neck profile, but I found the Gibson to have buzzing frets and highish action, whereas my Strat has lower action with less fret buzz. Maybe it was a bad Gibson, but I don't know, every Les Paul, Gibson or not, has been like that.

I just bought a relatively cheap acoustic guitar, I had been wanting to learn an instrument for a while and I finally have a job and can afford buying shit so I decided to treat myself, I have never played one of these things before but I downloaded everything from the OP and I searched around on youtube for beginner stuff and found this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppoiecarX-o which was actually kind of helpful so far, like for example I wouldn't have known that when you strum while pressing a string/fret or whatever you are supposed to press with the tips of your fingers and not just your fingers in general, that was really helpful, and I just practiced trying to do that with each string for like an hour and a half last night, and I've gotten decent with the first three strings (sorry still haven't memorized each string letter).

Anything you guys would say to the noobiest of noobies (besides stuff like "guitar isn't fun")?

>Prodigies generally push themselves harder than anyone else ever could. They just have this drive where they NEED to practice 9+hrs a day
I'm not considering myself to be a prodigy but back when I started I was spending multiple hours on my guitar like that. It wasn't as much of a need, but rather that it felt very distracting and relaxing, I completely lose track of time when I'm practicing something with a metronome in the back because I'm just focusing on the tempo and my playing.
On top of that, it's very satisfying (at least to me) to notice, or hear from someone that you've made progress.
>>
>>70054794
>>70058235
>Prodigies
Doesn't usually mean shit in the end. This just means they were unusual at a certain younger age. The reality is most child prodigies are only seen as "exceptional" until everyone else around them catches up to their skill level and then they're not viewed as "special" anymore. Being 7 and having the same average skill as someone in their late teens is something to notice, but wait until that same kid is in his late teens and still has that same average skill level. People stop caring then and that's usually the way it goes for most child prodigies.
>>
>>70058463
>Doesn't usually mean shit in the end

It can - if they continue the work , they are always one or more steps ahead, this, of course is rare.

I have seen 2 "prodigies" (not guitarists) that have worked at it and remain exceptional, world class players, while others have faded as they tried to coast on what they had done in their childhood.

The ones that make all have talent/natural aptitude, hard work, usually a very sharp, analytical mind and prodigious memory and to top it off being able to work with others is a real bonus.
>>
>>70058573
>remain exceptional
Yeah, among literally hundreds of thousands of other exceptional guitarists who weren't prodigies when they were younger. Almost all prodigies fall into obscurity because technical skill isn't the same as creativity. Just because you can type 1000 words a minute without any grammatical errors or typos doesn't mean you can write a book anybody wants to read.

>if a foot compares itself to a yard
I'm sure it seems that way from your limited perspective. The reality is technical guitar players are a dime a dozen, the only thing making a prodigy "special" is having any sort of technical skill at a younger age. Once again, there's nothing particularly special about being a technically skilled guitar player as an adult, there are literally hundreds of thousands of them floating around.

>>
>>70054794
>prodigis generally push themselves harder than anyone else ever could

That's absolute bullshit. There are very few "prodigies" who are also geniuses or have any kind of intrinsic talent that sets them apart.

The only difference between a "prodigy" and a non-prodigy is that the "prodigy" decided or was convinced that learning a skill or perfecting a talent was a better was to spend their time that sitting in front of a TV or videogame, getting lost in books, or running around outside.

The Japanese prefer perfection of skills and scholastic learning as opposed to "just pick it up and play!' that happens a lot in the west. You'll be hard pressed to find a Japanese guitarist even in some shitty nu metal band that doesn't know musical theory as well as a concert pianist.

You ever sen live footage of Led Zeppelin? I like Jimmy Page but he's sloppy. That's the trade off though, his sloppiness is only a strength because of the type music he played and the band he was in.

Sorry, only some hayseed in the middle of buttfuck nowhere would get this riled up over a little real talk about a couple of overrated 3rd tier shredders. All this boils down to is you got upset because I pointed out Guthrie Govan and John Petrucci aren't really remarkable players in a sea of other technical players. It's just immature fanboy behavior of you to argue otherwise.
>>
>>70060202
DESU the world's truly good guitar players are flamenco and classical guitarists. Most of the people worshipped for being the "greatest guitarists of all time" are hugely overrated, especially in metal.
>>
>>70060202
>because I pointed out Guthrie Govan and John Petrucci aren't really remarkable players in a sea of other technical players.
That's not what I was arguing about. I'm just saying that their songs aren't "average level".
If they are so common, just go ahead and cover them. Surely you're not worse than the "average guitarist" right ?

>>70060265
I hate classicalfag's attitude and disdain for everything that isn't classical but they're right on a lot of points.
>>
So I finally invested in some pedals. Currently i have them attached to a piece of 2x4 with velcro, but the velcro is failing. I want to build a pedalboard, probably with wood. My question is how are the pedals usually attached to a store bought pedalboard? Are they just lying in there loose?

thoughts on a tele with or without a rib/tummy cut?

not sure if i should get the option on my partscaster.

pros: weight reduction, more comfortable

cons: might affect the balance since i am just getting a body and neck separately

yeah i was kinda thinking that, i played one the other day without it and it seemed fine for comfort (even though it was only 10 mins).

i'm kinda stuck in that my body is on order, so i will need to make the decision very soon. and i also won't know the final weight of the body to know if i need weight reduction or not until it gets here.

the wood was rated at "medium to medium light weight swamp ash".

it seems that the only teles that come with them are the old fender deluxe and the new fender elite models.

Man, while I hate the last FE's artstyles, the music's still pretty good.

Anyway I'm not really setting any goals for speed or playing because I really think it's impossible to gain anything but a few bpm and I'd rather not get some bad habits.
But for 2017 I'm aiming to learn how to read sheet music faster than one bar in ten minutes, composing with something in mind (currently it's kinda random and "what works"), and accomodating once I get a new guitar.
>>
>>70053882

The secret is that most chords and chord progressions from tonal music pull towards the Ionian mode, the key you're actually in. So as long as you use those progressions they will pull the listener into hearing a song in G Major not C lydian, like this anon said

my life sucks right now. yes I know you don't care I just need to vent because I have no one and no where to do so. I quit talking to my friends a long time ago so you guys on 4chan are the closest thing I have to friends now.

The likely already have enough of it to at least continue production as usual until the next quarter starts when they have to change course.
>>

I work at a smaller record label. My advice to every single artist is to hire a good merch designer because you sure as hell aren't going to make any money off recordings unless your fans are loyal enough to start buying special edition vinyl and things like that.
>>
>>70066024
you're missing the point

we have sustainable endemic woods that are great for guitar, rosewood doesn't matter, it's just used for cost
>>
>>70066011
that might work selling guitars made with rosewood within the europoor union. no more rosewood from china for you guys anymore though. no rosewood from america or mexico either
>>
>>70066028
This. Records are generally more expensive then they make. Its sort of self promotion. Money comes from live gigs (but if you do your own music on small scalle, they will mostly rip you off ant pay absolute bullsit if anything), merch, teaching a leting other musicians hire you for anything.

In other words. Almost no chance to make money as a band with own music. But a big chance some will make money out of you. As a small scale band, you are not the one who gets paid, but the one who pays.
On the other hand, as a freelance musician who plays anythigt thats paid, you can make some buck.
>>
WTF even is CITES and exactly why is anyone obligated to do what they say?
>>
>>70065726
who do you think decided it was best to move production of everything to china? "the market" i.e. american capitalists
>>

I'm not playing my own music though. What music do you play?
>>
>>70066083
>they still won't beat the U.S
They've already beaten the U.S. though. I hope you're not under the delusion that the rest of the world can afford (or wants to afford) an overpriced American guitar. The reason all the big guitar manufactures have factories overseas is to stay competitive in a global marketplace. Fender even has a factory in Mexico because Americans can't afford (or don't want to afford) an American made instrument. A "large sustainable amount of great wood" isn't going to change that fact.
>>
>>70066235
In band I make most money from (we play on weddings, proms and similar stuff) we just play anything thats currently in the radio, and some evergreens. Also, we have a few song for classical dances.

you're trying to make some really dumb nonsense point without even following the fucking posts

europe has nothing on the U.S for guitar manufacturing, they won't "finally get into guitar making" because of a fucking rosewood ban lmao, we export more wood for guitars than any other country in the world and we use plenty here to make guitars in the country

>>
>>70066384
No, you wanted to claim that Europe (as a potential upstart) couldn't beat the U.S. in guitar manufacturing. I then pointed out there are many "upstart" countries (China, Indonesia, etc) currently beating the U.S. in guitar manufacturing and that "having a large sustainable amount of great wood" doesn't change that fact. All that went straight over your tiny head, I guess.
>>
>>70066628
yeah, you're wrong, most of the guitars made in those countries are under U.S companies so it means nothing

It's not a "claim". Europe has no chance in beating the U.S, especially if you imports under American brands. Offshore brands are made where they're made because of labor costs. There's no reason, unless you're resting your laurels on European craftsmanship, to make your guitars there

You've got a tiny head, brain, dick, whatever it is you use to shitpost some nonsense

rosewood is ugly af, porous and dry

How is Indonesia "beating the US" at anything if we are talking about american capitals who set up production there? All that money goes back to the US and only a small fraction remains in the country where production actually happens.
>>
>no more rosewood oh no so sad
No more Dalbergia you cocks, that doesn't encompass all rosewood.
Tiete Rosewood and Borneo Rosewood aren't on the list because they're not part of the Dalbergia genus.
Rosewood is a category of wood, not a fucking genus.

in no way are they "beating" the U.S in making guitars if they're not even getting the fucking money for it lol, also the only country PHYSICALLY MANUFACTURING more guitars than the U.S is probably China, and most of those are for U.S companies

to put it in perspective, PRS is squarely in third in number of guitars made in the U.S a month. The amount they make a month, Fender does in two days. And Gibson makes more than Fender sometimes. That's the top 3. That isn't counting all of the other brands, and then the smaller luthiers.

it doesn't matter tone wise, it might not even matter on acoustics, all that matters is look and feel(which you won't even feel it if you use tall frets)

How are you going to tell me that a wood that never comes into contact with the strings creates a noticeable sound difference? The body tonewood debate is already bullshit enough, you're trying to say the fretboard has enough resonant vibration to have any effect at all? Because that's 100% bullshit

People only call ebony "bright and crisp" because it's a harder material so they fool themselves into hearing an effect they assume it would have

The chinese can't buy themselves all the shit they produce so they depend on the US to act as buyer that sustains their economy. The US profits more from this deal because China has no choice and MUST sell to the US while american capitals are free to open up factories wherever. So even if China produces more stuff, they don't profit from it as much as the US does from investing in chinese factories because
>there is no direct correlation between industrial output and profits/rate of accumulation of capital
The crucial thing is to control the markets.

do humbuckers sound worse in a strat because its made out of alder/ash instead of mahogany?

i think i am starting to come around to the strat body contours, but love the sound of duncans in mahogany. i am wondering if i can bridge the gap.
>>

What? That does sound same to you? Check step 2 and 3.
But to be honest, thats not a fair comparsion. I spoke about same instrument. Not same type of instrument. I ment actually changinch neck on the same piece of body.
